Sunday Funday with a fantastic first visit to a Chinatown gem! I felt like Chinese food today, and rather than eating at my neighborhood regular, I wanted to go straight to Chinatown for the most delicious, authentic experience. Thanks to my deep dive and discovery on Yelp, MCCB turned out to be the perfect spot to achieve this. The restaurant has held its Michelin status for five years now, and for my first time visiting, the flavors here were incredible. Please note: the restaurant signage is not easily visible from the street since the storefront faces inward toward the mall plaza, and while looking for it, I ended up asking a local man and his wife for directions. He was so kind and welcoming that he unexpectedly left his wife on the sidewalk, my husband in the car, and walked me right across the street and into the mall to point it out from the inside! WAIT TIME: there is a 1 to 1.25 hour wait period to be seated for a table, and a $10 fee via credit card is required to secure your spot, which is then fully transferable to your bill upon checkout. The wait is a great time to walk, explore the shops, restaurants, all Chinatown has to offer, and get your steps and miles in! SERVICE: our first server, Allen, was a bit on the stiff, curt side, but overall nice. However, we had to move from a two-top table to a four-top to accommodate all the dishes we were trying. In that changeover, we were blessed to get one of the BEST servers there, Ashley, who made the experience wonderful. FOOD: we ordered an absolute feast, starting with three starters. The Cheng Du Style Dumplings were fantastic. The Crispy Crab Rangoons were actually not mini at all and had a great crunch. The Szechuan Style Cucumber was a bit underwhelming and a slight bit on the soft side for my tastes, as I prefer my veggies crunchy even when cooked. We ordered everything with the mild heat option so there was no overwhelming spice, just great flavor. For the main dishes, we started with the Cauliflower Flank Steak and added broccoli to it, which was a fantastic addition. It is cooked in an oyster sauce and has none of the standard sweeter seasonings of the other dishes. I chose this to balance a sweet and salty rationing across my dishes, finding that MCCB is a great place to get that perfect balance. The Chicken in Spicy Garlic Sauce was perfect with the mild heat option as well, and the Honey Black Pepper Flank Steak was also incredibly savory, tender, and good. We paired everything with garlic string beans, white rice, and a great jumbo shrimp fried rice. I preferred water, while my husband had a few Diet Cokes. The food comes out hot, fresh, and bursting with flavor. PARKING: parking is convenient--there is street parking or you can use the two north and south lots within walking distance. The north lot is on Archer and Wentworth, and the south lot is on Cermak and Wentworth. Validated parking is permitted for a maximum of 3 hours, and you will only pay $3 with the validation. Just make sure to stay within that time limit and get it validated, because if you go over the 3 hours or forget the validation, you will have to pay the full price for the lot. PRICE: the pricing here is very reasonable for a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Our dinner came out to just under $146 total, which offers phenomenal value given the large portions and top-tier quality. If you are seeking high-quality, delicious Sichuan food in Chinatown that completely lives up to its multi-year Michelin status, and can be customized perfectly to your spice comfort, this is a great place to go. Highly recommend and will return with family! read more

If you come with a group of nine people and two or three are running late they will not seat you and then we'll give your table to someone else. Make sure all of your party is on time and they are off here. You get Michelin food but not Michelin service They only have ONE waiter ONE ( on Wednesday night) for every table here. It took me about 10 minutes to get Allen's (the only waiter) attention so that I can get my plate changed bc I didn't like what I got (beef dry signature) and my sister ordered fried rice with egg and there was no egg in it and the waiter said there's a little one egg. A bit of egg. I see one egg in there one small egg that was not enough.. It's a very small restaurant with an amount of maybe 15 tables small but they will accommodate a large group and put tables together. And still, it will be very small.. I'm using that one li The dry signature spicy meal (chicken or beef) all come breaded and it is not mentioned that it's breaded on the menu I was not happy with that. I was expecting non-breaded, but they accommodated me and changed my dish Kindly. read more

Some of the best Chinese food you can get. The restaurant itself felt busy but service was prompt, hospitable and efficient. Music wasn't too loud as well. The food itself felt both tasty and hearty. I really enjoyed the crab ragoons, salt & pepper shrimp as well as the flank steak chef's choice. Next time I'm in the area, I'm for sure coming back. Worth the wait. read more

60 to 75 minute wait plus $10 deposit just to be on the waiting list. Depending on the size of your party it could range from $10-$20. Luckily that money does go towards your bill. Be sure to double check your bill because they do put a surcharge on there. Keep in mind, They do NOT hold a Michelin star! We ordered the wontons. That was my favorite dish it was fresh and filling. Very spicy! We also ordered the chili fried chicken. It was good , very spicy! Only order these if you like spice and slight bitter with a hint of sour. Lastly we ordered the combination fried rice. It tasted like nothing honestly. The food was not Michelin star worthy. I wouldn't come here again. Everything is reasonable price, large serving portions. The service here is terrible! Be ready for that. Table arrangements are cramped as they clean the tables they spray the spray bottle everywhere and it will get onto your food. The employees appear to not be cognizant of cleaning supplies contaminating nearby customers dishes. It's a very tight small restaurant space. That is a common issue in there. We did not take our rice that was left over home with us because of that contamination occurrence. read more

Absolutely worth the wait! There will be a long waitlist and you should put your name on it. The food was outstanding and came out incredibly fast after ordering. The wontons were so delicious, I'm still thinking about them. Everything was packed with flavor. I highly recommend for authentic Chinese food. read more

Popular Schezuan restaurant in Chicago Chinatown . It has 4 years Michelin recognition. Wait listed for 1 hour and seated . The place wasn't that big capacity probably 50 people max. Recommendations-sign for wait list - required $20 deposit once you signed. That will be deducted from your receipt. -make sure all parties are present - specify how spicy you want 1-5 level Ordered Apple wood fish- so good for 4-5 people. This dish was the highlight of our dinner. Fried tofu was very tasty. The duck with taro , fried pork spare ribs were delicious. The crab ration was good. The price was very affordable. The servers were very friendly and attentive. Ambiance with lots of colorful signature from all visitors. Cute read more

OMG the Cheng Du Spicy Dumplings were the best I have ever had in my life. They were delicate without a thick wrapper with just enough kick that wasn't overbearing. Definitely will be ordered next time we go. The honey black pepper flank steak with very tender with a slight hint of the honey and pepper that really blended well together. The portion size was huge for the price which was similar to the shrimp dish. I couldn't believe the food quality for the price. The restaurant is VERY small so expect a wait but you can walk around Chinatown while you wait for your table. People were complaining about a 60 to 90 minute wait so people did pull out of line. They do charge you a $10 deposit that will be deducted from your bill. Definitely coming back when I am back in Chicago to try different dishes. read more

Waited almost 1.5 hours, they require $10 deposit to be put on a waitlist (but it goes toward your bill) The service was good, and the food was large portions and good! We ordered cheng du wontons, dan dan noodles, and stir fried duck in beer sauce. The duck was more soupy than I expected but still good and flavorful! I don't know if I'd want to wait that long again but I do want to go back and try more things on their menu read more

This was sooooooo good OMG. I'm still thinking about the food after two days. I can't wait come back to Chicago and come right here again. If you want some good Chinese food this is one spot you must try and get the Szechuan chicken and that Mongolian beef. The service was really good got us in and sat really quickly. Was on top of refills and food came out in record time with our food. They even box up your food when ready. 10/10 would recommend PSA: go early cause that line grows by the minute lol. read more

I can't believe I accidentally deleted my photo of the special fried tofu!! I wanted to display the massive portion and well-seasoned greatness. That tofu was fantastic! Great flavor, perfectly fried to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I asked for a little extra spice and they delivered with the jalapeños. The sever also gave me some chili oil too. The chili oil was fantastic on the Crab Rangoon! We ordered that as an appetizer. My friend got one of the shrimp noodle dishes and she said it was extremely delicious! The restaurant is small, but they flip the tables quickly. However, I highly recommend that you make a reservation. read more

Let me start by saying: coming here alone was a mistake. Even a party of two is pushing your luck. Three hungry, voracious people maybe, four-plus ideally. Pretty much everything is served family-style, and designed for groups to order and share various dishes. I ordered the Crab Rangoons, West Lake Beef Soup, and the Traditional Hong Sue Pork (Pork Belly). The Crab Rangoons were fantastic. They were served fresh from the fryer, still piping hot! The wonton was thin and crisp, and the filling was tasty. Of note, it leaned slightly away towards funky (fish sauce) and towards sweet. The filling also used onion! I am by no means complaining, just notes for completeness. This is also the only dish I could finish, as it was four rangoons. The West Lake Beef Soup was well executed and balanced in terms of ingredients. I also loved the pepperiness! I took home most of. It, and happily finished it off in the next couple of days. My only note as a matter of preference is that I would prefer a little less starch, and a little more salt. The Hong Sue Pork was among the softest and most tender Pork Belly I've had! Everything, including the skin part, all melted in my mouth. These were in a savory, sweet, and lightly salty sauce which gave both the protein and the rice to which they are added fantastic flavor. Further, while not a vegetable-forward dish, I liked the addition of bok choy. When it comes to the service, it was all around fantastic! The staff is efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable. I especially want to recognize their incredible ability to read the room. The staff didn't come up while I was stuffing my face, but when I looked up and briefly made eye-contact, that was correctly taken as a cue to approach. Food also came out in a reasonable time frame considering how busy it was. Finally, we come to the prices. Due to the prices of pretty much everything, I was pleasantly surprised! The volume and quality of food came out to a non-shocking price! Final verdict: My only negative is that MCCB is not solo-diner friendly. One is free to take food home, but it's not the same. I guess I have only myself to blame, for I need more friends. Would return?: 1,000%, just not alone. Would recommend?: Absolutely, for a group. read more

I was so very excited to try this restaurant that people rave about on social media. Got there just before the crowd. Waited maybe 10 minutes. When you arrive, they will ask for your name and a $10 deposit that will go towards your meal. If you decide to get off of the list on your own, the $10 is non refundable. (No problem) We were seated at a table and it took quite a while for the server (don't know his name) to come to our table. When he did come to the table, he didn't introduce himself and he just stared at us. After a few seconds he says "You ready to order?" I tried to lighten the mood and ask his name and he didn't want to tell me. Ok... We order a few appetizers to start. We also ask a few questions, none of which he was able to understand. (We truly thought there was a language barrier so we extended grace and didn't think much of it) Got the appetizers. They were decent.. but... A group of 4 people sat to the immediate right of us, not only did he great them, he gave them several recommendations for appetizers and entrees. (No language barrier in sight) Was very much friendly and attentive to them. Still never came back to the table but continued to take great care of the tables around us. At this point we decided that it would be best to go somewhere else for entrees. In all of my years of dining out, I have put this on top 3 of my worst experiences. Treat ALL of your customers with the same respect and dignity. We had to flag a random employee down to get our check. Paid in cash and had to flag him down for our change. read more

MCCB deserves all its Michelin recommendations because it's where you wanna go if you're craving Chinese in Chicago. The food is family style and comes at you faster than the cardinals pitcher. It's located deep in china town likely too packed to get in. So make it to the waitlist, enjoy y the rest of Chinatown and head back for possibly the best Chinese meal you'll have in Chicago. This was my 6th time trying to go to MCCB and I finally did it. If you want to come here, make sure you have adequate time to wait for this place because it gets busy. The only downside is if you want to put your name down, it's a $10 fee. MCCB has bumped up my list of Chinese restaurants in Chicago. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles, green beans, special grilled fish with mala (amazing presentation), dry chili chicken, and mapo tofu. I loved everything we ordered and the mala had a good quick. My boyfriend even said that the special grilled fish looked like an "emperor's meal." The flavors are absolutely amazing and the price is not too bad. I can't wait for the next time I go to MCCB! read more

Easily the best food on our entire trip to Chicago. I mean no offense but, from all the hype, I was highly disappointed with Chicago's food game. Overpriced, under flavored slop. But then we ran across MCCB and not only was this this the best of our trip, but maybe the best Chinese food we've had... period. Service was awesome and we had a good feeling when there were plenty of open tables at other restaurants in the plaza but this one had a 45 min wait. Amazing. read more

I had been wanting to try MCCB for a while, but I also went in with tempered expectations. In my experience, Michelin-recognized restaurants can sometimes be a little overhyped, so I expected to be somewhat let down. Thankfully, that wasn't the case--I enjoyed the meal overall, even if it wasn't a "wow, this is the best meal ever" experience. The biggest surprise for me was the dried chili chicken. I almost didn't order it because so many reviews said it was overly salty and spicy. We asked for less salt, and they were happy to accommodate. I actually thought the spice level was very manageable, and it ended up being one of my favorite dishes. The orange chicken was another pleasant surprise. I expected it to be a basic, Americanized option, but it was delicious and ended up being one of my favorites of the meal. My friends really enjoyed the dan dan noodles, which seem to be one of their signature dishes. Personally, I thought they were good but not particularly memorable compared to everything else. The mango shrimp was tasty as well, but it wasn't something I'd consider a must-order on a return visit. Service was great. The waiter was friendly, accommodated our request for less salt, and we were seated immediately. We arrived about 10 minutes before opening on a weekday to line up, and that seemed to work well. overall a great experience! read more

Went for Sunday lunch, quite a lot people lined up way before it opened at 12pm. Even though it got Michelin awards several years in a row, but I think there's a gap. 4 adults ordered below dishes. Apple wood charcoal grill ribeye steak 大蒜蘋果木炭烤肉眼牛排 $40. It was delicious, it waked up my taste buds. Sour pickle & fish fillet soup 酸菜魚片湯 $13. Very good, the level sourness was just right. Plenty of fish in the soup. String bean 四季豆 $14, it's okay. Wood ear mushroom salad 凉拌黑木耳 $8. It was not close to the expectation, it's salty for some portion, and not much flavor on other portions. There should be vinegar added to improve the flavor. Cheng du spicy wonton 紅油抄手 $10.5. Not meeting our expectations, the sauce was not close, need to add vinegar. Signature dry chili fantail shrimp 香辣鳳尾蝦 $11. Not sure why it was a signature dish, not impressed. read more

My family ordered a variety of dishes for lunch/dinner today. Everything is as delicious as I remembered from dining years ago. My favorite today was the pork stomach and bloom Szechuan style. Although my family decided on mild spicy for all dishes, everything was spicy even to my taste. The eggplant was always my family's favorite, no matter where we ordered from. It was pretty good. We placed the order before heading to a bakery inside the "old Chinatown". By the time we came back, our order was ready for pickup. It's worth the wait!! I absolutely love Chinese food and the food at this business did not disappoint. Literally everything that we ate was absolutely delicious. The flank steak and the chow mein was tender. The honey black pepper shrimp were juicy and flavorful. The Mongolian chicken was also delicious. The green beans were cooked perfectly with a nice crunch! Unless you get there as soon as they're open, you're probably gonna have a bit of a weight so I put your name on the list and then go look around Chinatown come back and get absolutely full. The portions are family sized so if you got a big group, all you would need is about two entrées and you're good to go. I love that the food did not taste it greasy you did not feel "yucky" after you ate the service was excellent and the overall ambience is very low-key. We ordered takeout this time, but after seeing the atmosphere, I wish we had dined in. Be prepared--the wait was around an hour and a half. They take a $20 deposit to hold reservations, and judging by how many people happily waited, it's clearly worth it. There was one dish in the dining room that smelled absolutely incredible, and I'm still sad I didn't figure out what it was. I'll definitely be eating in next time. The mapo tofu was one of the best I've ever had. It was different from the style I usually prefer--I typically like a thicker, richer sauce--but this one had a lighter consistency while still packing amazing flavor. I ordered it with beef, and it was a fantastic choice. The flank steak fried rice was a bit bland on its own, but I think it was intentionally seasoned that way to pair with the bolder dishes on the table. I cannot wait to to back nd dine in this time read more

Insanely large portions for the price but the quality of the food was disappointing: - Dan Dan noodles (6/10), used flat noodles instead of the round skinny noodles that are traditional, sauce wasn't very flavorful - mapo tofu (6/10), too soupy and also had no depth of flavor - dry chili chicken (8/10), very tender chicken but overly breaded and not crispy enough - garlic eggplant (8/10) loved the sauce so much but eggplant pieces were too big - sour pickled fish fillet (9/10), super tender fillet and the flavor was good, not as sour as others I've had - Choi sum (9/10), simple garlic vegetable, very tender Overall good, but not worth an hour long wait -- plenty of great restaurants nearby read more

Let me just start off by saying this this place has some delicious family style food. My son recommended this place to me and a friend. It was a 30-minute wait time to get a table. I put down a $10.00 reservation charge, which goes towards your meal. There is a menu selection of unique traditional Chinese cuisine. The portions are huge. You can order several things off the menu and share with your party. OMG is all I can say about this place. I will be coming back to try out more things on the menu. The service could have been better. One of the young ladies acted like she didn't want to work that day. Full of attitude towards the customer. If there's a China town around us we have to go for the food! Tik tok kept recommending this 4 year in a row Michelin recommended restaurant and had to try it. The place is a little spacious but the wait and line is always out the door no matter what time of the day you go. Plan ahead to walk around and explore while you wait. (There is no early waitlist and there is a $10 deposit that goes towards your food.) After an hour wait, we got sat and already had water at the table. Our server was really nice and gave us some good recommendations. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. The shrimp fried rice was nice soft and ... fried! The short ribs came paired with white rice with an amazing sauce. And the salt and pepper beef is to die for. Disappointing experience--way too salty. I really wanted to like MCCB. Given how highly rated this restaurant is, my expectations were definitely up, but unfortunately, the food didn't deliver. I ordered the Dry Chili Chicken, and it was beyond salty--to the point where it was genuinely hard to eat. To start, husband and I ordered Chef's Special Chicken Tendon (peanuts, green onion, dry bean curd, cilantro) and Wood Ear Mushroom Salad (chili peppers, dark vinegar, ginger juice, green onion). Both are cold apps. The chicken tendon is medium spicy and mushroom salad is mild spicy For entree, we ordered the Chongqing style whole fish whole tilapia, jalapeno, red pepper, marinated grounded pork, garlic, ginger, green onion). This was labeled as medium spicy. Told the waiter we wanted it spicy. He kept asking if we were sure and we kept having to reassure him that we can handle very spicy (husband is South Asian and I'm Southeast Asian). We didn't find any of these dishes spicy at all when they came out. The apps were not good. I felt it lacked that unami and desperately needed salt or something. Also I don't think they work well as cold dishes and would be better served warm/hot. The fish however was delicious. Steamed to perfection and the sauce worked really well with it and a fresh bowl of rice. We were in a trance and absolutely obliterated the sucker. While the apps were mediocre, I would want to come back and try other dishes solely because of the fish. read more

Tucked away in Chicago's Chinatown is a restaurant you must try. Recommended by friends, MCCB is a Michelin-star Chinese restaurant that we decided was our BEST meal in Chicago (and that is saying something). We seriously debated going two nights in a row - it was that good. They have maybe ten tables total in this little restaurant within a Chinatown strip mall. You have to put your name in, and hold your spot with $10 (that is then applied to your meal). Is it all worth it, you ask? Yes and more. The dishes came out hot, flavorful, and well worth the hoopla. Additionally, we were stunned at the affordable cost. We ordered the garlic green beans, the cheng du style dumplings with sweet sauce, the dry chili chicken, chow mein. read more
