I had been wanting to try MCCB for a while, but I also went in with tempered expectations. In my experience, Michelin-recognized restaurants can sometimes be a little overhyped, so I expected to be somewhat let down. Thankfully, that wasn't the case--I enjoyed the meal overall, even if it wasn't a "wow, this is the best meal ever" experience. The biggest surprise for me was the dried chili chicken. I almost didn't order it because so many reviews said it was overly salty and spicy. We asked for less salt, and they were happy to accommodate. I actually thought the spice level was very manageable, and it ended up being one of my favorite dishes. The orange chicken was another pleasant surprise. I expected it to be a basic, Americanized option, but it was delicious and ended up being one of my favorites of the meal. My friends really enjoyed the dan dan noodles, which seem to be one of their signature dishes. Personally, I thought they were good but not particularly memorable compared to everything else. I was so very excited to try this restaurant that people rave about on social media. Got there just before the crowd. Waited maybe 10 minutes. When you arrive, they will ask for your name and a $10 deposit that will go towards your meal. If you decide to get off of the list on your own, the $10 is non refundable. (No problem) We were seated at a table and it took quite a while for the server (don't know his name) to come to our table. When he did come to the table, he didn't introduce himself and he just stared at us. After a few seconds he says "You ready to order?" I tried to lighten the mood and ask his name and he didn't want to tell me. Ok... We order a few appetizers to start. We also ask a few questions, none of which he was able to understand. (We truly thought there was a language barrier so we extended grace and didn't think much of it) Got the appetizers. They were decent.. but... A group of 4 people sat to the immediate right of us, not only did he great them, he gave them several recommendations for appetizers and entrees. (No language barrier in sight) Was very much friendly and attentive to them. Still never came back to the table but continued to take great care of the tables around us. At this point we decided that it would be best to go somewhere else for entrees. In all of my years of dining out, I have put this on top 3 of my worst experiences. This was my 6th time trying to go to MCCB and I finally did it. If you want to come here, make sure you have adequate time to wait for this place because it gets busy. The only downside is if you want to put your name down, it's a $10 fee. MCCB has bumped up my list of Chinese restaurants in Chicago. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles, green beans, special grilled fish with mala (amazing presentation), dry chili chicken, and mapo tofu. I loved everything we ordered and the mala had a good quick. Went for Sunday lunch, quite a lot people lined up way before it opened at 12pm. Even though it got Michelin awards several years in a row, but I think there's a gap. 4 adults ordered below dishes. Apple wood charcoal grill ribeye steak 大蒜蘋果木炭烤肉眼牛排 $40. It was delicious, it waked up my taste buds. Sour pickle & fish fillet soup 酸菜魚片湯 $13. Very good, the level sourness was just right. Plenty of fish in the soup. String bean 四季豆 $14, it's okay. Wood ear mushroom salad 凉拌黑木耳 $8. It was not close to the expectation, it's salty for some portion, and not much flavor on other portions. It's worth the wait!! I absolutely love Chinese food and the food at this business did not disappoint. Literally everything that we ate was absolutely delicious. The flank steak and the chow mein was tender. The honey black pepper shrimp were juicy and flavorful. The Mongolian chicken was also delicious. The green beans were cooked perfectly with a nice crunch! Unless you get there as soon as they're open, you're probably gonna have a bit of a weight so I put your name on the list and then go look around Chinatown come back and get absolutely full. The portions are family sized so if you got a big group, all you would need is about two entrées and you're good to go. I love that the food did not taste it greasy you did not feel "yucky" after you ate the service was excellent and the overall ambience is very low-key. (There is no early waitlist and there is a $10 deposit that goes towards your food.) After an hour wait, we got sat and already had water at the table. Our server was really nice and gave us some good recommendations. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. The shrimp fried rice was nice soft and ... fried! The short ribs came paired with white rice with an amazing sauce. And the salt and pepper beef is to die for. To start, husband and I ordered Chef's Special Chicken Tendon (peanuts, green onion, dry bean curd, cilantro) and Wood Ear Mushroom Salad (chili peppers, dark vinegar, ginger juice, green onion). Both are cold apps. The chicken tendon is medium spicy and mushroom salad is mild spicy For entree, we ordered the Chongqing style whole fish whole tilapia, jalapeno, red pepper, marinated grounded pork, garlic, ginger, green onion). This was labeled as medium spicy. Told the waiter we wanted it spicy. He kept asking if we were sure and we kept having to reassure him that we can handle very spicy (husband is South Asian and I'm Southeast Asian). We didn't find any of these dishes spicy at all when they came out. The apps were not good. I felt it lacked that unami and desperately needed salt or something. Also I don't think they work well as cold dishes and would be better served warm/hot. The fish however was delicious. Steamed to perfection and the sauce worked really well with it and a fresh bowl of rice. We were in a trance and absolutely obliterated the sucker. We ordered the dry chili chicken and ribeye steak cumin. As we were ordering, Allen, the waiter, kept trying to discourage us from ordering the dry chili chicken. He continued to say it's very spicy. It's very spicy. We kept saying we know and we want it. They sell wine/beer and bottle soda. We saw they had a sake drink. 1 of us ordered it. Again he was like oh it's strong, very strong, not sure you can handle it. So we still ordered it. To find out it was only 12% alcohol. NOT STRONG at all. After this encounter my friend and I started to pay attention to his interactions with other tables. Not once did we overhear him discouraging people to order certain foods. He also seemed to greet others table faster than he did ours. We noticed people around us ordered similar foods and noticeably couldn't handle the spice. So we were definitely a bit taken back by the service, a bit discriminatory because it may have been 2 other people in there that were of the same background as me and my friend and he didn't go to their table as much. One of the ladies even got up to ask for her check. OAN: the food was delicious. The so called dry chili chicken that was supposed to be so spicy that he thought we couldn't handle...we almost devoured the entire plate with no hesitation. My friend really likes Szechuan food and enjoyed MCCB when she went in the past, so I've been meaning to go. Last time I went, we got the cumin short ribs and the fried chili squid (I forgot the exact name, but it's the one where they cook different food items the same way). I came here because this restaurant was featured multiple times in the Michelin guide and sadly I left just thinking it was alright. Don't get me wrong it is certainly better than most Sichuan/Cantonese restaurants but it was not out of this world/amazing enough for me to give it a 5. My wife and I arrived a few minutes before opening which allowed us to get seated as soon as they opened. We started with their Cheng du Spicy dumpling which was mild at best and definitely not as full as we'd expect considering how flat they looked. We also shared the Signature Dry Chili Chicken, Spicy garlic sauce eggplant, Honey Pepper flank steak, and Dan Dan noodles. The dan dan noodles weren't that spicy. I like how they give you lots of meat in the Honey Pepper flank steak, plus it tastes really yummy. Our favorite was the Dry Chili Chicken because each bite was a little spicy and numbing but nothing too intense. The eggplant was plentiful and tasted good too. I thought we ordered some popular items, but maybe we got the wrong things. The food tastes great but it didn't quite give me that wow factor that you'd expect from a Michelin place. You definitely pay more for this compared to your typical Chinese restaurant but for me it always comes down to taste.
