I've ordered from the Milwaukee location and they knocked it out of the park. Tonight, from the Halsted location, it wasn't great. The fried rice lacked more flavor than I previously experienced. One of my biggest peeves is when restaurants put fried food in airtight containers for delivery. The sweet & sour shrimp was soggy when it got here. They also don't put the fruit and veggies in the sauce, they put it in the container with the shrimp. I'm glad I was able to specify sauce on the side otherwise I think they would have dumped it on the fried shrimp. I'll be moving on. read more

The portions were good but dishes felt slightly pricey for what we got The pork was on the salty side but did like how thinly they were sliced Green beans were cooked to a soft/borderline mushy and wrinkly texture (not my preference) and lacked the Sichuan spice that i was expecting The salt and pepper shrimp was mediocre as well. The server was super nice. His Chinese name is 哲山and he spoke fluent mandarin . He said he did his undergrad at Wu da which the full name would be Wu Han university . The food came out sooo slow and to be honest over cooked... salty and oily... they ran out of Celtice "my fave "and never heard that they ran out of this before...I ordered my lychee martini($10) since they didn't have hh and just waited and waited. He didn't bring me hot water and also lemon when I asked for it .( I usually just drink room temperature water these days but it felt good to have some warm lemon detox after massage and cuppin) I haven't n been to this location in a couple of years and have always just ordered Chengdu on ubereats whenever I craved for it. Horrible service. I've ordered delivery from here before and it took forever so I decided to do pickup. Order said 15-25 minutes. I'm at 40 minutes now and they say another 10+. When I ask the person working at the front desk the answer is "Sorry no English". I don't have any issue with someone that does not speak English. I have a big problem with a restaurant that is totally unreliable on order commitments, has no one in the restaurant that knows what is going on or can service customers, and delivers mediocre food. I will never come here again and would recommend that you look for other Chinese food options. In a city the size of Chicago there are many better options. read more

Ordered take out here. Easy to call ahead and food was ready in 30 minutes. We ordered 3 types of steamed dumplings - lamb and dill, chicken and cabbage, and beef and scallion. We also got 2 noodle soups, scallion pancakes, sichuan string beans, and vegetable fried rice. The dumplings and noodle soups were the stand out items and had a great chew and flavor. After returning to Chicago after 35 years eating great Chinese food in the SF Bay Area, I was eager to find some place other than Sun Wah. After having a pre theater meal here, I'm still looking. The onion pancake other wise know as tsung yo bing was really good. It needs more flavor but it was crispy and thin. But we ordered the spicy won ton soup which was cold when we got it and not in a soup. It was decent but no better than the frozen ones at Marianos. the shrimp she mai were okay. Tiny not like the larger ones with large pieces of shrimp I'm used to. The pot stickers were large and deep fried. That was weird. I've never had then deep fried. The mat was a bit mushy liked they used a filler. I also had the braised pork belly with tofu. The sauce was good and the tofu was good, but th pork belly was not tender. They should have used a pressure cooker. It would have been much better. I doubt I'll return. This was a huge miss. I should have guessed from the lack of guests. the service was good so no complaints there. They need a real Chinese cook in the back. Not someone who is following a recipe. read more

Excellent food - we ordered the crispy eggplant and got a mala xiang guo and both were excellent. Yes, the food is very oily - but Sichuan food uses a lot of oil so it's not out of the norm. Hey, if you want authentic food, you're getting authenticity there with the oil. The oil is what imparts a lot of the spice. The crispy eggplant was incredible: the crispy skin mixes perfectly with the soft interior, creating an excellent contrasting texture experience. I would happily have this again. You can customize your mala xiang guo with a variety of options - we added lamb, which was cooked to perfection. As with Sichuan food, it is extremely spicy - if you don't have a high spice tolerance, be prepared to eat your food slowly since the heat builds! read more

Pretty dead on a week day night for dinner so service was quick and also responsive. Beef noodle soup: not too spicy, beef was extremely soft and melts in your mouth. Mainly removed a star because the type of noodles they used felt like it didn't really match the noodle soup. Wontons: juicy and the soup base was refreshing and didn't taste like it was made from anything powder related. tasted clear. wontons had a right amount of filling! Mongolian beef: the beef they used was really good. don't know what they did to it but the sauce was also pretty good as well. I'd say they gave an adequate amount of beef though. Super busy staff was able to seat us, and take our order very quickly. The dumplings were amazing and came in the usual steam basket. Overall a very deep menu that had ample choices for our mixed tastes. A bit slow on getting the check afterwards, but clearly a winner and we will be back. Authentic is definitely the word for this place. The Sichuan food is exactly as you would get it in China. I ordered delivery, and it arrived hot and freshly made. Six pieces of Shrimp Shu-Mai made a great appetizer. I like mine spiced up a bit so I dipped it in Sriracha. The other appetizer I tried was the Shanghai Spring Rolls. It was amazing how these had retained their crispness during the trip. Some of the best I've had. Salt and Pepper Ribs were good, but one of those authentic dishes where you spend a lot of time spitting out the bones, just as in China. The highlight was the Dry Chili Chicken. This s about half dry chilis! You don't want to eat these unless you really have a tolerance, because when they rate this dish with two chili icons, they mean it! The chicken was nicely crisp and suffused with the chili and garlic flavors. Even the fortune cookies (which are actually from San Francisco, not Asia) had authentically misspelled words! We have ordered chengdu twice now for delivery and had issues both times. The first time our order never arrived because the driver forgot to grab it. The restaurant gave us a refund but it's very difficult to get ahold of them on the phone. The second time, it took over 2 hours for our order to arrive and it was missing two items and given the wrong fried rice (veggie instead of combo). 5 stars because the food here was so good! We stumbled across this spot while we were in the area and on a cold day a hot steaming bowl of noodles and spicy eggplant sounded pretty good. We were seated and service was efficient and quick. The food was really tasty! The spices they use give a nice kick and mouth sensation without being overbearing. We did takeout from here since they're only open for dinner. It's a damn shame they're not open for lunch. I'd probably come here once a week. I usually only do Chinese food in Chinatown, but decided to venture out a little bit. I called in the order and they quoted me about 40 minutes. Thought that was a lot, decided to show up in 30 minutes and the food was ready. I ordered their Dandan noodles, beef fried noodles, and their dry chili chicken. A little on the pricey side, but very worth it. Their Dandan noodles where delicious. A Sichuan noodle with ground pork sauce. A very simple noodle dish, yet so flavorful with some nice heat. This is a must try. My least favorite was their beef fried noodles. I wouldn't order this one again. I had a few bites of it and decided it wasn't for me. It lacked any real flavor. And then there is the dry chili chicken. I've had this dish plenty of times at other restaurants, and they all taste the same. All the other places do is just cook the chicken and put 3 times the amount of dry peppers on top of the dish. Not here. The chicken was spicy, but very flavorful. It was cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and a very tender delicious bite. Another dish I would definitely order again. Overall, Chengdu did not disappoint. If it tasted this great for takeout, I could only imagine how it would taste freshly made on a plate. I will definitely be returning. read more
