Fire. Everything tasted incredible, I especially loved the scallion noodles and beef & green onion dumplings! Ambiance was nice and cozy. Worth the wait

Pure comfort food. We went on a Sunday around 4pm and were quoted a 45-minute wait, but ended up getting seated in about 15 minutes. Worth the hype! The vibes were chill with pop music playing in the background. Service was solid. Our server was knowledgeable, explained the menu well, and answered questions without rushing us. The Pork & Chive Dumplings tasted like something my mom would make at home. The broth they sit in adds a lot of flavor and makes the dish even better. My only nitpick is that I personally prefer a thicker, chewier dumpling wrapper. The Dan Dan Noodles were the standout. Creamy, nutty, crunchy from the peanuts, packed with flavor, and not overly spicy. It was my first time trying dan dan noodles and now I totally understand the hype. 8/10. The Xian Bing took about 25 minutes to come out, which makes sense since they're made fresh. The lamb filling was flavorful and the outside was super crispy, almost like a scallion pancake. The bread itself was softer and thicker than I expected and could've used a little more flavor. Overall, this felt like authentic, comforting food that leaves you completely satisfied when you walk out. Next time I'd absolutely order the Dan Dan Noodles again and try the beef noodles, scallion pancakes, and beef dumplings.

We went in as a group of five. The wait was short and we got a table easily. Seating is tight and the interior is basic. We started with house beer, then worked through chicken potstickers, tofu skin salad, the xian bing (freshly baked crispy bread stuffed with cumin lamb), and dan dan noodles. The dan dan noodles were the standout, tangy and spicy in a way that turned almost addictive. The xian bing was a close second, the crust crackly against the rich, cumin-heavy lamb. A solid meal in a no-frills room.

Visited Chicago from NYC and reached that point in the trip I had to have asian food or it was over. Took the trek here and this was probably the best beef noodle soup I've ever had. I don't normally eat spicy besides like kimchi level but this was the perfecttttt level of spice before I'd be bothered by it. The rich but clear broth complimented the crispy bok choy, tender beef, and smooth noodles well and had such flavor profile throughout. Most importantly, I didn't feel like it was heavy or had that saltiness sometimes left in my mouth for noodle soups - just felt clean and rich. Putting this on my go-tos every time I come to visit now. It is a bit expensive I will say for what I'm used to for a beef noodle soup but perhaps that's the nature of the city or the ingredients being high-quality? I also wish they offered a smaller size for dumplings so I wouldn't have to choose either/or considering the noodle portion is pretty sufficient.

This place is good, but for the amount of time we waited, it's just alright. It's a little overhyped. I would recommend the dill dumplings and the spicy beef noodles. We sat on the patio and it was lovely.

Lao Peng You has been on my Chicago list for months! I finally got take out from there and I was not one bit disappointed that I did not dine in. It lived up to the hype and I am looking forward to going back soon. The Pork and Chive dumplings were my favorite, but the Dan Dan noodles and Cold noodles were close behind. Do not let the long wait turn you away, just order take out.. pro tip, make some rice on the side!

Lao Peng You was so good! The meals felt really traditional and authentic. I got super lucky because I know there's always a long waitlist, but I went around 2 p.m., just after lunchtime, and I got seated right away, though the place was still packed. We ordered the beef noodle soup, which had a nice kick to it, and the dan dan noodles, which the peanut flavor was really bold. Our overall favorite fish was their beef dumplings! We also tried the xian bing, a crispy flat pie filled with red bean inside, and it was delicious. Overall, a fantastic spot and absolutely worth the visit!

These are quite literally the best dumplings I've ever had in my life. And the scallion pancakes were so nummy too. I don't remember everything else we got but everything was fucking gooood. It sucks that you can't reserve in advance, but we just added our names to the waitlist and grabbed a drink at a nearby bar and the wait was super easy

The restaurant had a cozy vibe and I liked that you could see into the kitchen. We got the pork and chive dumplings and the beef noodle soup. The dumplings were amazing, probably the best dumplings I've had! I loved the broth they were served in, it really added to the experience. Caution to people who aren't cilantro fans, but I personally loved the flavor it brought. The beef noodle soup was ok, not as flavorful as I was expecting and took longer to come out. Would definitely come back for the dumplings!

Stopped by Lao Peng You for lunch while we were in the area after hearing great things from friends who live nearby -- it definitely lived up to the hype. We went on a Sunday afternoon and there was about a 30-minute wait, but that's expected for a spot like this. It's a small, cozy place and they don't take reservations, so plan accordingly. We were especially excited to see so many vegetarian options on the menu. We admittedly over-ordered because everything sounded so good -- and honestly, no regrets. We tried the mushroom salad, cold noodles, Dan Dan noodles, and mushroom dumplings, and every single dish was a 5/5. Everything was flavorful, well-balanced, and clearly made with care. The service was also worth noting -- friendly, patient, and helpful as we decided what to order. Overall, a great experience and a spot we'd absolutely come back to.

We ordered like the PERFECT amount of food and best variety. Roast duck: I honestly don't know if I've ever had duck before, but I'm a duck believer now. The skin on theirs was the perfect crispy shatter texture and the duck was sooooo juicy! I don't know why I was always so worried about it being gamey. They give you fluffy steamed bao buns, a sauce, and scallions on the side as well as duck fried rice! Turnip cake: Obviously a must any time I come to dim sum. I've never seen turnip in any other form than this. Japanese salt & pepper tofu: My FAVORITE dish ever. Any fried salt & pepper tofu always makes me happy. They use a creamy egg-like tofu and the outside is lightly crispy with amazing aromatics stir fried in. Steamed white rice on the side is perfect with this. Loved everything else my dinner buds picked and we were super full by the end! Service was good and food came out fast and scorching hot! ***Parking in the area is treacherous (not the restaurants fault, but reconsider driving if possible bc cell signal can be zero to none around the garages if you get lucky) ***Their website allows you to request a reservation as long as it's 3 hours before your desired time. We came on a Saturday evening around dinner time and there was plenty of room for us to get a table immediately as walk-ins!

I was able to get a last minute reservation for me and my friends, and we were even able to sit inside. The teapot "group" drink was hard to pour, but that was truly my only complaint of the night. A few dishes, like the Duck Fried Rice, Pork Belly, and Beef Noodle Soup, were actually pretty solid. But the rest of the night was just so frustrating that I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The Jiaozi were the first big letdown. The menu said they were beef short rib and bone marrow, but they didn't taste like that at all. The filling was just super mushy and the flavor was just weird. The manager and the food runner were nice when we mentioned it, but our actual server was a disaster. When we tried the Goat Noodles, all we could taste was cumin. It was so overwhelming that it covered up everything else. We couldn't even tell if there was actually any goat shoulder in there. When we told our waiter, she couldn't care less. She got totally defensive, wouldn't even listen to us, and just said, "Oh, I told you when you ordered that the dish is cumin forward" and walked away. It got worse when the bill came. She was holding on to the payment machine so hard and almost yanked it right out of my friend's hand. She was staring at it to see what we were tipping. It was so awkward and incredibly rude. No thank you, no nothing. She just grabbed it and left. The place has potential, but they really need to fix the food and retrain the staff. A cool vibe doesn't make up for bad food and awful service.
