This was my first time trying a Chinese barbecue spot in Chicago, and it definitely won't be my last! I went with someone who knows the city well, and they recommended the duck fried rice. I had never tried it before, and it was absolutely delicious so flavorful and satisfying. We also ordered the wonton soup and egg rolls, and both were really tasty. Everything came out quickly, and the service was warm and efficient, which made the whole experience even better. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food, and I'm already looking forward to bringing my friends and family here next time. This is a tough one. Not happy at all. With all of the wonderful legendary Chinese places closing over the past few years (Kow Kow, Hong Min, Pekin House, and even the best egg rolls at Mee Mah), Sun Wah has been solid over the years- their whole duck is legendary and incredible. BUT, as wonderful as the food is, the last 5 visits have been dreadful. The angry waitresses are part of the deal, but when we're spending a few hundred bucks on dinner, enough is enough. Asking for extra sauce and being told NO- asking for extra bao wrappers and being told NO, asking for extra daikon for the duck when we're given a half full dish in the first place in unacceptable. And like I said, that's part of the deal. And the food is so good that you put up with it. But what happened last week was the last straw. We ordered egg rolls, 2 large dumpling soups, pot stickers, a whole duck, medium ribs, sweet and sour chicken, and for an appetizer, a medium BBQ pork. When the server brought the pork, first, it was cold. I guess that's also the deal. Sometimes it's hot, sometimes totally cold. But this time, and I'm not exaggerating, more than half of the order was pure white fat. Not fatty pork, white solid fat. we tried chewing git to see if there was any meat, but no. So, I finally got the servers attention and showed her. She looked at it, and then walked away. I assumed she was going to bring us a new order. Instead, the owner walked over. I showed her the 2 plates- 1 plate with half of the solid white fat, and the other plate with chewed up fat pieces. Instead of apologizing and bringing over a new order, she said "sometimes the pigs we get are very fatty". So I replied something like "sure I get that, but you can't serve this to customers" and " can you please bring us a new order of actual pork and not just a plate of fat"??? and she then looks down at both plates and says "you already ate it so we can't do anything. I tell her that, no, I didn't eat anything- you can see a plate with chewed up and spit out fat, but she literally WALKS AWAY. So then of course we wait for her to bring a new order over, but that never happens. And we're loyal customers for many many years, and she knows us. This extreme lack of care for your longtime customers is nauseating. Like I said, we've put up with it for years because we love the food (as well as putting up with the many health code violations over the years), but after this huge fuck you from the owner over a few bucks worth of pork? We're done. And our friends are done. This rude pathetic refusal to admit that you're serving inedible food and take care of your loyal customers with a few dollars in pork will now cost you THOUSANDS of dollars every year, because we have now told 20 of our friends to stop going, and they all agreed with us. Don't come here already hungry- there was a bit of a wait to be seated and to get order/food due to the customer volume. This was my second time here, but I came for the famous peking duck meal and it was amazing! I wish I took a picture of the entire spread. The soft bao came with shredded vegetables and sauce, which was delicious! The fried rice and soup that were made with the remaining duck was also really good! Always a must stop when I visit Chicago. Large storefront bustling with customers even at 5pm Sunday. The service was excellent as always beginning with the greeting at the door. This is no frills great Asian food. We pre ordered Peking duck and it is always expertly prepared. Love watching as they carve it tableside. The egg rolls are huge and delicious. Because apparently I love peking duck so much. --- --- --- When my pal Raj suggested coming here when I was in town for work, I fully trusted him, but also couldn't even remember my last peking duck experience. What did it even taste like? I don't know. But my life was in Raj's hands and sometimes you just have to let others be the pilot. I have to say, I am *ecstatic* we came here. This might be my favorite meal in Chicago to-date. For those weirded out by eating duck, I assure you it just tastes like amazing BBQ chicken. I could not stop eating it. As a matter of fact, I think I could have eaten a second portion - it was that mind blowing. The one word of caution: there's some kind of "end piece" that I don't know the name for that was very gamey and not appetizing at all. So I'd recommend avoiding that. But all of the regular slices? Go crazy, kids. You will not regret it, even if you are not an adventurous eater. Recently went to Sun Wah BBQ and had a great experience. We made same-day reservations for four, including pre-ordering the Peking duck, which made the process seamless, especially since weekend lines here can easily spill out onto the street. We ordered the roasted pork, Peking duck, and beef lo mein, and everything came out quickly. The highlight was easily the Peking duck, which was carved tableside right in front of us. Even better, the remaining duck was transformed into soup and fried rice included with the order, a satisfying (and delicious) bonus that made the experience feel complete. The roasted pork was perfectly salty with a crisp exterior, yet not greasy. The lo mein came with a bowl of soup, and while the noodles were a bit different than I expected, the egg noodles were still flavorful and the beef was tender. One standout detail: the chili oil. Most spots keep it fairly mild, but this was hands down the hottest I've ever had, and seriously packed with heat. The duck fried rice was very good. The soup was just OK basically it was just broth. Would've been nice if it had a few vegetables you do receive a tray of bao buns. You get some pickled vegetables and some carrots and onions and a helping of hoisin sauce.. we did order an extra tray of bao buns and an extra order of hoisin sauce which we were charged for. We went to Sun Wah for dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the spacious seating - getting a table without a wait was easy. We started with the Ginger Cosmic, a ginger-based non-alcoholic cocktail, along with a Tsingtao beer. For food, we ordered the stir-fried baby bok choy, roast duck on rice, and beef chow fun. The cocktail was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the bok choy was well-seasoned and came with a generous portion of white rice. Luckily, one of my friends knew that if you called a few weeks ahead of time, you could order an entire roast small pig, which was incredibly delectable. With reservations we Celebrated a birthday at the restaurant 12 June, the place was packed however are table was available and we were seated. The restaurant specializes in whole duck specifically and other Asian cuisine. We ordered two whole ducks, duck fried rice, noodles with duck, shrimp and lobster sauce with some drinks from the bar. The restaurant provided some streamed buns with our meals. The duck is AMAZING!! My first bite was some duck , rice and some lobster sauce on a bun, crazy good. The duck is juicy, sweet and not overly salty. Best thing I've eaten this summer. I really like this place. There was an elephant in the room- the case in South Carolina had just ended and some guest in our party were angry about the decision. Sometimes you can pick up on a vibe in a room and emotions take over. For example we needed extra to- go containers for some birthday cupcakes and the restaurant wasn't complying with that request because it wasn't their food. The Beijing duck dinner is easily a standout in Chicago, and in addition to eating the slices with buns and sides they'll later serve it to you as a broth and fried rice. The other items are phenomenal as well, I personally think the drunken noodle, eggplant, and ma po tofu are highlights on the menu. The service is about average, when they come they're nice but otherwise not attentive. The place is also relatively affordable (~50$pp). Quick heads up, the space gets loud on weekends so even though they seat large groups it gets hard to hear anyone not sitting directly next to you. read more

We ordered the Peking duck family set. It comes with the Peking duck (which they slice in front of you), soup made with the duck broth and duck fried rice. We also ordered Chinese broccoli and the small roasted pork. All of these dishes were delicious. The Peking duck was roasted well and had a lot of flavor. They have a limited amount of Peking ducks roasted per day, so try to get there as soon as you're able to. The soup was delicious and wasn't bland. The duck fried rice and Chinese broccoli had wok hei (breath of the wok) which is what makes Chinese food taste so good. Lastly, the roasted pork was crispy and tender. I gave this restaurant a 4 star instead of a 5 because of the service. They were busy so service was slow but it felt like it took about 15 minutes for them to take our orders. The restaurant has a lot of space and seating, and there is a roasted meats section in the restaurant where you can buy the duck or roasted pork to go. The multi-course duck experience is actually not on their menu and should be reserved ahead of time as they often sell out. Ordering the bbq duck dinner is a must as it comes w steamed buns and all the fixings In my experience, this is not an allergy friendly restaurant. When I last came with friends, we had someone with a shellfish allergy and another who doesn't eat pork. When we ordered a vegetarian soup from the menu, it arrived with pork AND shrimp. I brought this up to our server, who responded that it was our fault for not asking if the soup(which didn't indicate having shrimp or pork) would have either of those things in them. We still were able to exchange the soup for something else, but this situation could have ended very badly for everyone had our table not been attentive to our food. read more

From another review I saw it was intentional and that its on their website, but honestly who would read that. I couldn't find a place to order online so I just called it in. The ordering system was quick and painless as well as the pick up process. The food was ready by the time I arrived at the restaurant. We ordered two Roast Duck on Rice plates, Lo Mein with BBQ Pork and two orders of their BBQ Pork Buns. The pork buns were delicious and the bbq pork Lo Mein tasted a little off. They have a full menu of other options as well but definitely suggest getting the duck. The duck was soft, fatty, and the skin was crispy.
