There was an elephant in the room- the case in South Carolina had just ended and some guest in our party were angry about the decision. We made same-day reservations for four, including pre-ordering the Peking duck, which made the process seamless, especially since weekend lines here can easily spill out onto the street. Talk about a delicious and authentic experience. Luckily, one of my friends knew that if you called a few weeks ahead of time, you could order an entire roast small pig, which was incredibly delectable. The Beijing duck dinner is easily a standout in Chicago, and in addition to eating the slices with buns and sides they'll later serve it to you as a broth and fried rice. I've been getting takeout bbq for years from here. Inside, they have lots of tables for larger groups or smaller ones, so a great place to come with many people. When I last came with friends, we had someone with a shellfish allergy and another who doesn't eat pork. When we ordered a vegetarian soup from the menu, it arrived with pork AND shrimp. I brought this up to our server, who responded that it was our fault for not asking if the soup(which didn't indicate having shrimp or pork) would have either of those things in them. This menu item (or perhaps experience) consists of several courses that use and re-use parts of an entire duck. The meal started out with blanched and stir fried Chinese broccoli and cabbage. The cabbage was perfectly juicy and crisp- the perfect appetizer for the heavier items to come! While I usually love Chinese broccoli, I felt that this dish was a bit bitter. Next, the beautifully carved duck arrived on a platter along with bao buns and fixings. The meat was tender and juicy with a perfect crispy and sweet exterior- I will be dreaming about it for a while! The fluffy buns and crunchy veggies perfectly complemented the duck's richness. In succession, the staff brought out soup, fried rice, and chow mein all made from additional cuts of the duck. Although the soup seemed a bit lacking in flavor, the exceptionally sticky and rich rice totally made up for it. Since our crew polished off the duck pretty quickly, we also ordered the beef and broccoli, shrimp wontons, and pork/chive dumplings. The beef was super tender and flavorful- I would definitely order this again. The wontons were crispy and fresh as well, and the dumplings were solid.
