It's located in the Lakeshore East area and, upon entering the restaurant, it appears small, until you walk to the back to find a much bigger, louder area filled with folks eating and chatting. We sat in the quieter area near the front since we only ordered two dishes, which we devoured in short order, then went on our way. Something I'd never seen before was the tablet to order your food! What a great idea!! It had photos of the food items and the prices, just like a paper menu, except you click on the item(s) you want and voilà!! Very cool, I must say. Took the family to Chinatown for my partner's birthday and made it a full afternoon. First time bringing the kids, first time introducing them to dim sum, and we came in hot on a busy day with multiple events happening in the area. MingHin was packed, loud, and a little chaotic. Worth it. Dim sum is an experience as much as a meal and MingHin delivers on both fronts. We ordered more than we could keep track of. Soup dumplings that immediately became the kids' personal obsession. Shu mai that hit every time. BBQ pork buns in every form they offered because obviously. Chinese broccoli to balance out the indulgence. Everything was solid, fresh, and exactly what you want from a dim sum spread. The room was packed and buzzing but the service kept up impressively. Servers were constantly circling, clearing empty plates and dishes without missing a beat. Clean and attentive even at full capacity, which is no small thing. Fair warning if you are bringing little ones: this environment is a lot. The noise, the crowd, the overwhelming parade of food arriving at the table. Our kids loved what they ate but the sensory experience was a bit much for them. This is a place better suited for a group of adventurous adults or older kids who thrive in high energy environments. MingHin Cuisine is one of my favorite spots for dim sum and family-style dining. The service is always great, and I appreciate that they provide complimentary tea while you enjoy your meal. The portions are huge, so I highly recommend sharing dishes, especially if you're dining with a group. If you're not familiar with the menu, it can be a little challenging to know what to order, but the staff is usually helpful with recommendations. Some of my favorites are the dumplings, various rice dishes, chicken, lemongrass dishes, Mongolian beef, and other traditional offerings. This is a fantastic place for larger groups, and they're very accommodating when it comes to splitting checks. I feel like the first hint was that all the other restaurants had lineups to go in and walking into the establishment we were able to get a table, no problem. Especially in Chinatown in Chicago for there not to be a lot of people in this restaurant kind of concerning, but we didn't wanna wait in line and Google said that the reviews are really good for this place. Was super disappointed eating dim sum here. The food was the most disappointing part, tasted no different than the Chinese takeout down the street at home. Going all the way to the city I was expecting fresh and crunchy chicken, but everything was just mediocre. You also have to constantly grab a worker to answer questions or to get service. I would absolutely come back again if I'm in town. The string beans with duck stole the show. I ate the whole large plate! I also loved their take on the egg custard lava bun. It was more pastry than bread bun. I took off one star for both service and food. The beef meat was not good and we didn't end up wasting it. It tasted off. The food was also too fried and you could taste the oil. Anything fried, we only ate one or two bites of. For service, our table didn't have a pen so we didn't know we were supposed to mark what we wanted. When our server came, we ordered some things on a tablet at our table and then I picked up the dim sum menu and said "and an we get an order of xx" he marked it and I said "and..." but we took the menu immediately and turned away. We were shocked! Then I noticed that other tables were marking things down. I waved over another waitress and asked if I can get the dim sum menu back and get a pen. Do not be discouraged by a packed lobby! We went on a weekend trip and Chinatown was bustling as usual including this restaurant but we were seated in under 20 minutes despite a packed and intimidating lobby, especially when you're hungry! Wow, I've been there twice and am happy with the meal, service and ambience! The second time I brought my grandchildren and they were excited about the Lazy Susan on the table. Food here is stellar! You'll need to come with a party if +4 to get a wide variety and enjoy it family style. Upon walking in, you'll see a vibrant Chinese decor and atmosphere filled with culture all around. Staff are engaging and quick to most guest throughout. I can see why during peak hours, it can get quite busy. Perhaps making reservations in advance would be a wise choice as it can minimize the wait. This establishment is located at the end of the plaza. Can't really miss it as it's quite large in terms of space and capacity. I last came to MingHin years ago - and my experience was really not that good, but decided to give them another shot - it was so much better this time! The employees were so much more attentive and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious and fresh. The Mongolian beef is good (not very spicy), and the Kung Pao Shrimp was also good. The egg rolls are massive and really tasty - and I definitely recommend including a hot tea and hot & sour soup in the Chicago winters! Very good dim sum in a relaxed elegant setting! We liked visting MingHin Cuisine restaurant in the Chinatown Square shops, known for dim sum and Cantonese fare. It is decorated in bright classic Chinese designs and features, and our group of eight was welcomed warmly and well taken-care-of at this 5-time winner of the Michelin "Bib" (affordable) award, among a long list of kudos. This location of MingHin is at the southwest end of the Chinatown Square open-air mall, on the first floor facing the mall's central walkway. It's about a 4 minute walk from the Red Line station. It looks like there's plenty of paid street-parking along the Archer and S. China Place faces of the mall. We made reservations for 11am and they promptly seated us at one of a number of large round tables with a "lazy susan" turntable in the middle, perfect for conversation and sharing. Anna brought us hot tea immediately, and the staff and their two-kitchens kept our table well-supplied with piping hot fresh food and drink. We made our first order in-writing on paper menus that we passed around the table. They also had an electronic-menu tablet, which some of us used during the meal. The menu was quite extensive, and I think it encouraged even the shy among us to be more adventurous :-) I'm putting *stars next to a few of our favorites, though it's not easy to un-star any of the dishes! We liked them all! We got *Pork Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao), savory and well-seasoned, enclosing a satisfying slurp of hot lightly-salty broth. *Wood Ear Mushroom Pork Dumplings were lightly-earthy and well-seasoned. MingHin's Shrimp Dumplings were fresh and tender. *Siu Mai Pork & Shrimp Dumplings had more savory seasoning. Shrimp Dumplings tasted bright with colorful Green Chives. *Steamed BBQ Pork Buns were sweet and tender and happily messy. Someone thinking healthily ordered bright crunchy Garlic American Broccoli, which we all liked. Scallion Pancakes were light and tasty. *Stuffed Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf gave us hearty chewy slightly-sweet rice wrapped in a mild tender leaf. Pan-Fried Turnip Cakes or maybe Taro Cakes are something we always get, really rather mild and neutral in flavor. Short Ribs with sweet sticky Honey Sauce were cut cross-wise so you get a string of several ovals of tender meat. *Crispy Pork Belly with Lotus Root were delicious and tender with a crispy surface, while the lotus disks were crunchy and mild. *Deep Fried Shrimp Rolls were slender rolls of thin-crispy flaky dough around delicious chopped shrimp. I insisted on Duck Wings with thick lightly-peppery Black Pepper Sauce, which were rich in flavor, though more skin-to-meat than I've had before, giving them more chewiness than I expected around the tender juicy duck. On a better note, *Sliced Roast Duck was heavenly, slightly crispy exterior around the rich flavor of juicy duck, with just a little breast-bone in there, a generous serving. *Deep Fried Sesame Balls were delightfully warm with a crispy outer layer and lightly sweet and chewy inside. *Puffy Egg Custard Tarts were creamy and rich and sweet. MingHin serves delicious fresh dim sum, made-to-order all day long, 8am or 9am to 11:45pm every day! We ordered and ate for nearly an hour, and they never rushed us. We had to work a little to finish the last few :-) We shared a great feast. I've read that the restaurant's name, "Ming Hin", could be an allusion to a dining experience that is lofty and refined. That concept is lovingly presented both in the cuisine and in the elegance of the decor. We heartily recommend MingHin Cuisine of Chinatown Square! Been coming to MingHin for the beef and noodles. Honestly, that's what keeps pulling me back. We started with the beef on a stick. It was incredible tender, juicy and really well seasoned. Like... dangerously good. Only four pieces, so it was gone in no time but it was really good. For the main, we got the stir-fried chow mein noodles. This one's a favorite of mine. The noodles had that perfect mix of crispy and soft, especially around the edges. Not greasy, not dry. Just right. The sauce clung to everything, and the smoky flavor really came through. The meat stayed tender, the seasoning was on point, and every bite had something going on. I kept picking at it even when I was full and the bowl was empty. Always a good sign. Yum yum dim sum! I had been wanting to explore Chinatown and have dim sum for a long time so finally made it happen on a recent visit to Chicago. Nate and I were able to get seated right away around 8:30 pm on a weekday. The dim sum menu is on paper and they also have a tablet with tons of other dishes you can order. We got the BBQ pork turnovers, siu mai, short ribs with pepper sauce, and deep fried crab meat seaweed rolls. Everything was super hot and fresh. I really liked the BBQ pork turnovers - they were slightly sweet with super flaky pastry. The short ribs were fatty and savory, and the siu mai were super stuffed and tender. The deep fried crab meat seaweed rolls were thickly battered, which isn't my preference, but I peeled some of the fried batter off and the crab inside was so delicious. I'm a regular visitor of Chinatowns across the US and always try the same dishes to compare - Ming Hing's roast meats stood out even compared to places in San Francisco and New York's Chinatowns. The duck was really juicy with marinade that actually penetrated the meat thoroughly. The roast pork was notable for its unusually thin, cracker-like crispy top layer, which gave it an addictive texture. However, the dim sum items weren't as impressive. The har gow and siu mai suffered from over-processing - the filling was too uniform instead of having the varied chunks of pork and shrimp that make these dumplings interesting. The one positive was the dumpling wrappers, which were steamed perfectly with a good chewy texture. The service is what you'd expect from a dim sum restaurant. The interior was nice. My large party and I all come from Houston, which has a plethora of reliable dim sum restaurants to choose from at reasonable prices. I would say this place lived up to that. What I expected to be something of similar (not exact) taste to a traditional salted-toasted squid dish was the complete opposite. The squid was battered in what almost tasted like a sweet batter similar to a dessert? And the sweet chili sauce it was served with did not complement the dish well either in my opinion. I recently visited on a work trip and between five people we ordered literally almost everything on the menu. The food kept coming and it was amazing. The food was good. It was not bad and each dish did have a different flavor. What I mean by that is that sometimes Kung pow chicken and orange chicken has a similar sauce and that was not the case here so you will get what you order. The dumplings were good, but I was hoping they would be on a spoon like a traditional dumpling instead of a foil tin. But I understand that they mass produce and it's an easy way to get them to a very packed restaurant. The ambience is nice because it's in Chinatown, but the bathrooms were so gross to me. There is water all over the floor and I didn't know what it was and with the bathrooms being not clean it just makes me think is the kitchen clean. This is coming from a germophobic person after my bathroom experience. I didn't know how I felt about the restaurant but with a group of five people everyone had a good time and ate, and there were no complaints. I love a dimsum morning but I'm also super used to dimsum places in the states with 3/3.5 average rating. So I was surprised to see multiple minghin locations with 4/5. Okay things we had, the vegetable rice roll, egg yolk lava buns, and turnip cake. The rice roll doesn't come cut, and the inside texture is really gooey and unappetizing. Undercooked maybe? Same with the turnip cake. The buns were good, but the filling to bun ratio was a little sad. Service overall was really good. It was pretty empty the whole time, so it was easy to get servers' attention and food came out pretty quickly. Overall, an average dimsum experience. Please Note: The regular entrees and most of the standard dishes here will feed 3 hungry people - per dish. They pile it on! One tablet for the 8 people at our table to share. It would make more sense to put a single QR code on the table and we all make our separate orders (under each name) on our own phones. It took 40 minutes just to place the order - then the waiter confirms it. Chances are they have what you like, but you have to navigate through the tablet menu to find it... while we are all waiting for you to hurry up. Oh, and some items are not listed on the tablet menu. Tech for tech, the QR Code parking validation made up for the tablet irritation, but that really needs to change. All in all, this place is valuable. It is one of those reliable restaurants where you call everybody and say let's meet for lunch or dinner in Chinatown... and we all know you mean MingHin, even without the name being mentioned. Although this place seemed pretty busy, we managed to get a table near the front section of the restaurant right away. We ordered off shrimp dumplings, shrimp crepes, XLB (pork soup dumplings), stuffed sticky rice in lotus leaves, pork with preserved egg congee, scallion pancakes, and baked creamy egg yolk buns off the dim sum menu, along with orange beef. The scallion pancakes were more like scallion bread/buns than the traditional scallion pancakes we were expecting, but it was good bread. We were looking forward to the orange beef, but the dish here was disappointing. It was decent flavorwise, but every piece was soft and not crispy. I ended up just eating mainly the broccoli that was part of this dish. Service was quick and efficient. Although the dim sum here isn't the best we've had, it's a good spot for dim sum at any time of the day. read more
