Lately, we've really gotten into their Afternoon Tea which includes two types of French toast and we always get both...and I like both equally - especially the one filled with cream and topped with Ovaltine...but the Honey one is really good too...as you can see - I'm really torn between the two!! But the Pineapple bun option seems to be always sold-out?? You can have this with either a milk tea or lemon tea and personally, I would select the milk tea because it's sweeter and creamier. Haven't had Ken Kee in awhile. They've had new renovations that are very bold. There's booth and chair seating options. There were two other groups of people other than us. We sat down quickly but waited a good 10 minutes before anyone came to take our orders. There seemed to be a lot of staff behind the counter but only one girl was taking orders and bringing out food. While the space is relatively small and busy, we are usually able to grab a table for 4! We typically order the chicken chow mein, orange chicken, anything with Milo on or in it. I haven't been back to Ken Kee in 13 years, since 2012, and it was nice to have a past Yelp review to remind me of my last visit!  They have a different owner now, and the restaurant has been remodeled to a more casual Hong Kong cafe style.  There is also no more second floor operation.  They still have an extensive menu and also now feature a lot of customizable noodle dish offerings.   Anyway, my pal and I had dinner here before heading over to nearby Soldier Field for the AC/DC concert.  We met at 5:15pm which was early enough to beat the dinner crowd and the restaurant did get totally full by 6:15pm with a queue of wannabe patrons.  It was also a holiday weekend Saturday and parking for Chinatown Square looked hard to find at about 6:30pm as an fyi.  The restaurant has a great, visible location right by the plaza's open square and I could see it attracting a lot of walk-in traffic. We ordered beef chow fun ($14.95), curry chicken rice bowl ($13.95), and a fried oyster appetizer ($8.95).  They charged an extra $1 to make the chicken curry spicy, pffftt!   We shared the generously sized dishes and it was all fresh and top-top delicious.  The fried oysters were presented like jalepeno poppers.  The dishes came out readily after ordering.  They provided a carafe of water on the table which was convenient and service was attentive and just fine.  Overall, it was a very nice dinner in a casual setting and with carryout leftovers to boot.  I'll go with 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for our outing.  There's a lot of competition but I'll try to return again sometime. read more

I loved the decoration of the interior that reminds me of my short trip in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong style milk tea is a must and I got the bbq pork rice bowl with egg. Besides the nice service which deserves 1 star and the nearly renovations which also deserves 1 star which totaled to 2 stars. That is it. Food was not good at all. We ordered one congee, 3 noodle soups, 2 pineapple buns and one rice dish. That is it and with tips and tax, it was $130!!! What??? For some noodle soup? The worse thing is, it was horrible in taste. It was bland and not worth it at all. I was sick to my stomach for the amount of money I paid for something so terrible. There are so many good restaurants and we picked the wrong one. This was so good! It reminded me of a Toronto diner. This is not IG aesthetic--this is pure eats. I loved it. Probably not great for big groups, but can definitely accommodate up to 5 comfortably. Decided to pop into Ken Kee an hour before closing and grab a quick bite. The server highly recommended the Seafood Laksa as it is a south Asian delicacy and unique dish to find in a Chinese restaurant. The broth was so yummy and good and a combo of tangy, refreshing, a just a little spicy (as per my request). The fresh crab and egg were amazing. I'm also not usually an imitation crab person (this soup has both) but it was prepared really nicely and I enjoyed it! Highly recommend, and despite how hot out it was today, this soup was not too heavy and refreshing. I also love the interior of this spot. Very War Kong Wai meets Americana diner. Great spot if you want warm noodles during the cold, Chicago winters! I came with a friend and we were seated immediately. The interior is rather small but we didn't have any problem getting a table. They probably can't seat a party of more than 4 at one table, though. I made my own noodle bowl for only $10 and it tasted great. My friend got the orange chicken which she also enjoyed. The place has been renovated and is a lot trendier then I remembered. On an early Friday evening, the place was not as crowded. The menu had a lot of variety in it unless the Hong Kong style café that it started out as. We tried the Beef Daikon Casserole and Ken Kee Ginger Onion Chicken from their specialty section. Service was quick. The rice was a little too moist. At Asian restaurants, rice is a staple and being well made is a baseline expectation. The Beef Casserole had a think gravy to it and it was overwhelming to the dish. The dish was overcooked. The tendons soft when they should have some chewiness to them. This was a pretty good experience! My boyfriend and I went for a quick dinner somewhere near a concert that we were going to. The food and drink came pretty quickly for a packed Saturday night. We got the Chicken Chow Mein, the Szechuan Beef and a Hong Kong Milk Tea. The milk tea came within 3mins of ordering and it tasted great! It was something that I would sip while strolling around the square. It was not too sweet or too milky. 10/10 The Szechuan Beef was warm and spicy. The staff thankfully informed us that the sauce that the beef was served in was not soup and we should not drink it due to the spice level (my boyfriend agrees he would've died if he had drank it...it was very spicy). It came with rice and that balanced out the spice level. The spiciness was warm and flavorful, not just the only thing you tasted. 8/10 The Chicken Chow Mein was a crowd pleaser. It was standard wheat noodles with a very mild savory (with a dash of sweet) sauce, chunks of chicken (perfectly cooked so they weren't dry), baby bok choy and carrots. This dish was more of a sharing size since the bowl's diameter was about a foot wide. My boyfriend and I portioned it out for a bit but I ended up eating most of it. The dish was plentiful but I didn't walk out feeling nauseous or like I had to be rolled out of the place. The bok choy helped make the dish easily consumed at a high rate but also easily digestible. It was also cooked very well so it was soft to eat but still had a crunch. 8/10 And finally: the ambiance. This place is decorated very cute. There are neon lights everywhere and even the tables had collages on them. This is more of a place for groups of young adults/adults and dates. While it's friendly there, I wouldn't bring a family with little kids. The actual seating space itself is small with many tables. It's easy to walk around but have a stroller or running toddlers would not be a fun time for parents. That being said, the staff is very chill and don't interact with you very much unless you actively ask questions. They will leave you alone unless you seek them out so if you want staff that talks a lot, this won't be your vibe.
