The owner definitely recognizes me every time I'm in line. They opened their patio which contains 6 small outdoor seats. We also ordered the salt and pepper tofu and the eel and shrimp. The fried rice was really good, it was crispy, and there was a decent amount of shrimp and eel. It feels like the eel was almost sautéed and some kind of barbecue sauce, but it was marinated really well and the portions were also large. The salt and pepper tofu came out extremely hot. I've never actually ordered tofu out at a restaurant, but I wanted to try something new and I was absolutely blown away. The tofu was a really soft silken tofu with a soft flavorful batter. Scallion pancakes were really good and flaky if a bit heavy/buttery. The soup dumplings were tasty, but got a little stuck to the paper and often torn open and leaked before we could eat them. The Dan Dan noodles were definitely more of a noodle soup. They were tasty and not too spicy, though I usually like them creamier with a peanuty taste. The beef didn't have too much flavor. Best Chinese sit-down spot I've been to in Chicago so far! It has a very mom-and-pop feel. The decor is a little older, but it fits the casual vibe perfectly. Service was nice overall. The only issue was they probably forgot our salmon nigiri since it didn't come out until after we finished eating and reminded them. The Mongolian beef was the best version I've had in Chicago so far. The texture was perfect, the meat wasn't fatty, and it wasn't oily at all. I just wish the sauce was a little sweeter. 8/10. The scallion pancakes were incredible. Super crispy, flaky, and not greasy. Definitely one of the best I've had. 9.5/10. The chicken soup dumplings were good, but a little inconsistent. It was our first time here and probably last. Unfortunately the food fell short and was just okay. The hand pulled noodles did not look nor taste hand pulled. When you order hand pulled noodles you expect the slight chewiness and texture that they are known for. The salt and pepper pork had a battered coating much like that of sweet and sour chicken and not the thinner version you get elsewhere. The salt and pepper taste were lacking. The xiao long bao was probably the only thing we really enjoyed. Service was speedy and the food came out fast. Our total came up to $58.62 after ordering 1 boba, 1 appetizer, 1 soup, 1 XLB, & 1 fried rice. This food quantity would have been enough for 3-4 people to share depending on how much you eat. Hing Kee is definitely worth a stop, but just know you might have a bit of a wait. The wait was longer than we would've liked, but the restaurant isn't that big, so I totally understand how it can back up during busy times. Once we were seated, the restaurant was standard looking and clean. The food made up for it. The egg rolls were super fresh, hot, and perfectly seasoned with a great crunch. The General Tso chicken was the star though, really flavorful with a nice balance of sweet and heat, and there was this bright hit of orange zest that made the whole dish stand out. Didn't get much of that soupy goodness with the XLB because each one was unfortunately leaking already before I even touched them. So all in all, the dumplings were good, but were they amazing? This restaurant is located in Chinatown. It is a very small establishment, seating is limited. We sat down & placed our order pretty quickly. We ordered the chicken dumplings and combination fried rice. I also got a brown rice, green tea. The combination fried rice came out first it wasn't fresh. It was served to us a bit lukewarm. Decent size dish, it can serve up to two people. The rice was very mid in flavor. It lacked the traditional fried rice taste. We requested chili oil to savor our food. The chili oil added a good heat to it. The chicken dumplings were excellent. You do get quite a bit. Me and my partner shared them and had a few left over to take home. My brown rice tea was excellent nice and light green tea flavor with a nutty rice undertone. The cleanliness of the outside area where we all eat at was pretty up to par. However, the bathrooms were disgusting as soon as you walk back there before even entering the bathroom it smells atrocious. I walked into the women's restroom. It was a pigsty. I saw something floating above the door doorway and it was a roach caught in a spiderweb. It doesn't even feel safe to wash your hands in there it is that dirty. They need to do something about that because that is a representation of how they are treating their kitchen back there because it is right next to the kitchen. I did feel some kind of way after eating and seeing that but Hopefully they get their bathroom together other than that I did enjoy my experience here. Really loved this place. It's a great spot for a bigger group or if you want to order a bunch of dishes and share family style. The tables seem to seat around eight people, which worked well for our group. The vibe was calm, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. The menu is huge and honestly a little overwhelming at first, but nothing our group ordered was bad. Pretty much everything was good, except the General Tso's, which was just kind of mid/too sweet. The prices felt fair for the location, especially because the portion sizes are massive. They also provide to-go containers for soup-style items, which was nice. Taking a star off because the bathroom is kind of gross and the hallway to wait for an open bathroom is stinky sometimes. The food however is SO GOOD. Yeah, generally when I'm in town, I do like to come over here and visit. I'm a creature of habit and I know there's other places to try in Chinatown but I really come here for about three or four dishes. Today was no exception. I opted for the egg rolls and the Chinese broccoli and beef lo mein with the soft noodle. It was a quiet Friday afternoon due to the severe weather so it was nice not to have to wait. Service was friendly and helpful. It would've been a great day for any of the noodle soup bowls. Both the eggroll and broccoli beef noodle dish were excellent. I ended up taking the leftovers home. A couple local chinese friends recommended this place over that other popular xiao long bao place.... A bit janky... but oh man thats how you know this place is gonna be good. Came at a busy hour and the lady just handed us a scrap paper with a random number and just told us to come back in 10 minutes. No idea how it worked but it did. Soup dumplings were soupyyy, a bit doughy on the top but bursting with flavor. Noodle texture on point, their dan dan noodle ($12) was GINORMOUS, so flavorful, not too salty. Not a fan of ground beef in noodles since its hard to eat, but it was soooo good and I was scraping the bottom. You really can't beat this price or flavor. Did not have a good experience here- first of all when we came to get seated we went inside and some guy brought us back into the pre-restaurant tiny waiting area and put the number 2 onto a list and gave us a piece of paper with "8" on it indicating our spot in line. We walked around for like 15 minutes and came back, and there was another couple in the waiting area. I asked them if they were number 7, and they said they did not get put on the list but were told it would only be a few minutes wait, and that a party of 4 had just walked in before them and got seated immediately. When a worker came into the waiting area to help, he had no idea who to seat first and was confused about the waitlist the other guy had started. Eventually he talked to the other guy and we got seated, but the whole thing was pretty ridiculously unorganized. Then we sat down and got the menus which are pretty extensive. Many marked vegetarian options, many of which seem to be vegan as well. I ordered the vegetable dumplings and my sister got pork soup dumplings. Her soup dumplings came after around 15 minutes but we waited probably at least 30 for my vegetable dumplings for some reason. The vegetable dumplings were very disappointing. I think they literally forgot to put salt in the filling because they were very bland unless dunked in soy sauce and even then they were not very good. However my sister really really enjoyed her soup dumplings and she tried some of my vegetable dumplings and thought they were pretty good. So maybe this place is just not for me. When I asked the server if we could put the items on separate checks he said no because the total was under $40. Not a win -- this may be some people's favorite, but it isn't for me. This was our second time dining here. I don't recall anything particularly wrong (or particularly exceptional) from our first visit, but after today I think we've had enough. We came in for an early dinner. The dining room looked tidy, and the staff were attentive and plentiful -- no issues there. The ladies' room, however, told a different story and could definitely use attention. As for the food, it was very hit-or-miss: * Mixed seafood noodle soup -- Miss. The broth lacked depth and the noodle texture just didn't work. * Shrimp wonton, pork, fish ball & mushroom noodle soup -- Hit! My husband polished off his bowl in no time. * Korean-style BBQ short ribs -- Definite hit, our oldest loved them. Portion was a little small, but the Bao pork soup dumplings made up for it and both he and my husband enjoyed those. * Beef & Chinese broccoli chow mein -- Big miss. The beef texture was off-putting (squishy to the point of being inedible for me) and the sauce was bland with a gelatinous consistency. Chili oil made it passable, but that's about it. * House seafood stir-fry vermicelli -- Another miss. The scallops seemed soggy and the whole dish lacked flavor. We rang in the New Year by being impromptu and trying this place as a means of settling since MCCB was full by 8pm. I'm so glad they were because this was a PLEASANT surprise. I knew it was real and the former would have been way overpriced for all the hype that surrounds it. Don't get me wrong, almost any restaurant you choose in Chinatown will be delicious but in my experience I have had high hopes with even greater let downs. Choosing this place on a Saturday night was the best food decision we've made in a long time.
