The fish soup was well-priced at $6.50 but was a large portion with many fish pieces that were filleted nicely. The asparagus roll was a bit on the tiny side but for the price you couldn't beat it. My wife ate the mango roll and it was nothing short of delicious. Sumi Sushi is always fast, friendly staff, and beautifully plated food. Small and quaint - but easy to find. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated. We received 3 paper slips as well as menus. From what we observed with other patrons, most people come here for the AYCE option (which if you can house more than 2-3 rolls is a pretty good bang for your buck). Instead of AYCE, our party of 3 ordered a la carte. I tried 1 signature maki roll (eel) and 2 smaller maki rolls (tuna and salmon). Out of towner looking for some good sushi - I noticed on their website they had a lobster roll (my fav) so I decided to try it out. Small restaurant in need of upkeep. I sat down and one of the waiters was breaking & eating, he smacked his lips so load it was distracting. If you put aside the sanitation, as they only cleared dishes from tables and never wiped them ...yuck. I was worried. I ordered the Kani salad half cucumber half crabs with a delicious sauce with a nice zip & the lobster roll. I have to say it was the best lobster roll I have ever had ... hands down. Came in on a Monday at 6pm. Place was decently full. Only two servers available for floor and takeout orders. Pros- Byob. Hamachi collar. Scallop nigiri was decent albeit too much rice. Cons- really hot for August, the AC was nearly non existent. We were sweating the whole time and asked them to turn it lower, but to no avail. Rice was not fluffy/too dense. They didn't bring out half of our order for both rounds! Like super random stuff (missing veggie tempura, ikura, avocado salad, etc). They also ran out of edamame. Overall I would not return. The fish on the nigiri were generous portions, very fresh, and delicious. My only complaint is that the fish was a little warm. Today I was craving sushi but decided to stay in and do carry out. One thing I can say is that I was excited that they had their lunch special when on Sunday. That was a pleasant surprise! I love that for me! It's always nice and clean inside. Customer service is great, they take care of you right away. My order was ready pretty quickly which I love. AYCE sushi joints are notoriously hit-or-miss. Generally, you're getting lower-quality fish and a lot of rice. Sumi fits this description well. This is definitely not a pure sushi or Japanese restaurant. There are Chinese food items on the menu. If you're looking for value and don't care much about quality, then this place is for you. At the moment, they don't sell alcohol, but they do allow you to bring it in from the local liquor store. Otherwise, their drink selection is pretty typical. It can get busy during peak hours, but service was fast the last time I came. read more

Back again to try their newish all you can eat sushi menu. It's 29.99 (cheaper by $5 for weekday lunch) and like many of these, it's always a concern about the quality you get. They also still have their regular menu I believe. I'm glad to say I felt that what we got was the same level in terms of good sized fish cuts, not too much rice, etc as before this menu offering. I loved that there were some more interesting nigiri than the typical options and that people who like rolls with all the things inside would get great value. The appetizer menu, plus salads and dessert made this an exceptional deal with all the selections on the menu. Service was outstanding and attentive and they didn't make us feel bad if we filled out another form to order again. It's BYOB so you can make it a great dinner without pushing the wallet. Decent sushi, lackluster service. Been twice now and they charged a built-in 20% gratuity for a five and four-person group respectively. Which is troubling because the second visit we were left at our table without attention for 35 minutes after finishing our meal. They are always out of ice cream even at lunch hours, and they never manage to bring out the right amount of food from the appetizers section. Food taste great when you can get pass the horrendous service. Walked in on a Friday night at 9:10pm. We had a movie to catch at 10pm so we were already looking for something quick. When we first walked in, the waitress checked her watch. We then told her we wanted to dine in, which then she checked her watch again to tell us that the kitchen closes at 9:30pm. We ordered several sushi rolls. I then added a sushi deluxe at the end and it was the first thing on the table. We were waiting for our caterpillar roll to eat with our sushi but the waitress forgot to put the order in and denied us the roll because the kitchen was closed. Midway through our meal, the bill was already placed on the table. At 9:44pm, the restaurant was cleared out. They lack basic customer service to run a restaurant. The fish was fresh, one piece actually had a spot of blood on it which I've never seen before. The gyoza was a bit underwhelming. The salad was actually quite good. We ordered the lunch special for any three rolls (out of around 15 or 16 options), which also comes with a miso soup or salad. I ordered the spicy salmon roll, the eel avocado roll, and the Alaskan roll (salmon, avocado, and cucumber). My friend got the tuna avocado roll, salmon avocado roll, and Philadelphia roll. We both thought that salmon was better than the tuna, but they were all good overall. My favorites were the Alaskan roll and the eel avocado roll! I loved the flavor of the eel sauce and I thought the salmon tasted relatively fresh! The house salad was alright, but quite watery for some reason. I loved the miso soup though! This is one of the best kept secrets in Chicago for sushi! All of the rolls taste incredibly fresh, the size of the rolls are great and the prices are awesome for what you get. They even offer an all-you-can-eat lunch special for a great price. Dining in is more "functional" than fancy, but the taste of the food while be more than worth the sit down or it's a great option for pick up or delivery because sushi "travels well." I've been going to the restaurant for a couple years without a problem. They've changed to an "All You Can Eat" menu, and you can't order a regular meal anymore. It's a poor idea for people who aren't complete gluttons. There was no sashimi on the menu anymore, but I insisted and they made the Deluxe Sashimi that they had been making for years. My partner ordered wayyy too much food - three rolls that they brought in one of those "boat" things. Oddly, they do not show the change to "All You Can Eat" on their website, and if you order to-go, apparently you can still order from the original menu. There was food left, and then we got the shock of the night. Because of the "All You Can Eat" menu, if you want to take away anything they charge you more! In this case $1/piece for about 9 pieces of Maki! Needless to say they got no gratuity. This is a very poor idea in a neighborhood with so many retired people and children. read more
