I had casual diner with my nephew and he highly recommended this place. It did not disappoint. It's small, fast and somewhat casual. It's sit down but the service is so fast, you'll think it's fast food. I ordered the sushi combination and each of piece of fish was so fresh. It also came with California roll, that my nephew tried the first time. He had the tonkatsu ramen with extra egg. I tried a bite of his to see if it was good and tasted pretty good. It's not super fancy but if you want some fresh sushi in a relaxed atmosphere, this is the place.
Came back and it was even better than I remember. We both got combos. I got nigiri and my brother got sashimi...both so good. Don't forget the oshinko rolls. Hot tea, gyoza on top and you've got yourself a winner. Our server was the nicest guy in the loop and so helpful and patient with us.
Eh I came back per my last review and this time the sushi was not so good. This time I ordered takeout so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. I ordered the miso soup, the fried gyoza, and two rolls. The miso was bad genuinely just not edible and this got thrown away. However the gyoza was VERY good so I loved this dish and thought they did well. Both of the rolls were just kinda meh. I didn't feel like either of them stood out to me. One was a rainbow roll and maybe a supercharged roll I can't remember the name of the second one but it had scallop and eel on top. I just felt like they both were kinda flavorless and bland. Overall I'd say it was a hit or miss and was just sort of meh. I'd take them down a star as it seems the quality may have declined since the last time I was here.

Coworkers were craving sushi while we were out here so I tagged along even though sushi wasn't calling to me on this particular day. In that case, I opted for their chicken teriyaki, which was made very fresh. The sushi looked good that my coworkers got, as did the gyoza. They had some really beautiful and fun presentation with their plates too, so if I was a local I'd definitely come back here to try some of their sushi dishes! It's not too far from Millennium Park and right near the Chicago Athletic Association hotel where we were staying. Great service and small little spot with some good bites.
We had a good meal at Ryo Sushi. Our rolls came out in nice presentation with dry ice uping the look overall. The only downside was our table placement. We ended up at the very back next to the bathroom, which was distracting and echo-y compared to the rest of the restaurant's more polished look and feel. I just wasn't impressed by the atmosphere. Still, the quality of the sushi is good. If you can, I'd recommend requesting a seat closer to the front of the restaurant. -AD
Stopped by here for lunch. No reservations needed and got a nice window seat. The waitress was very prompt in taking my order. I enjoyed everything from the house salad, the mountain roll & the crab Rangoon was quite delicious. The place is rather small but the decor was clean and contemporary. I was in and out and would definitely recommend this place for a friend who works nearby as the service and food was impeccable.
Food was pretty good! And the servers were very friendly. Loved the presentation of food and can't get enough of the sashimi plating! The set up and ambiance was casual and cozy. It was a little hot inside the place even with AC, even with not a lot of people inside. Loved their shrimp tempura udon.
Pretty solid experience. I have dined in a couple times and have uber eatsed a few times. Good for a quick sushi bite
Recommended by a good friend so I went for a lunch since I was in the area. Nice cozy spot in Chicago. I ordered the lunch special of Shrimp Tempura and Tuna roll ( sub from spicy roll) and it was delicious and very reasonably priced. Just what I needed for lunch. Will definitely go back to try more items on their menu. Service was great too!
This sushi spot is my go-to when I'm craving sushi but don't want to spend a fortune! On weekdays, there is typically no wait for walk-ins and the sushi is always really good! My favorite go-to plates are the Regular Sushi plate & the Mango Dragon roll I do wish the restaurant was a bit bigger as a few of the tables are right by the restrooms, which is not the most ideal place to eat.
I went late on a weeknight and Ryo was full, but with only a brief wait for a table. The staff was friendly and sometimes had almost a sixth sense about our little kids' needs - handing us new chopsticks only a few seconds after a kid dropped one, for example. The jalapeño sashimi starter was delicious, as was the vegetable Udon. Our sushi was beautifully presented, good quality and my kids couldn't get enough. I'll come back next time I'm nearby.

A great sushi spot to have a bite for lunch! 12 piece of sashimi for only $14!!!! It was such a lovely meal! The servers were quick with our food and friendly! It's a very relaxed atmosphere. Definitely check their lunch specials!! read more
Found this location on yelp and was thoroughly surprised with how good the food is. I am a woman of habit so I got salmon, avocado rolls, and a special roll and loved what I got. The service was fast and easy and I did not feel rushed and I was very happy with how good the food was. the person I was with was concerned about ordering sushi because it's a landlocked steak (he's 10) but we were shown how fresh the fish really was in Chicago. The rolls were packed with fish and veggies, and wasn't too heavy on the rice which I loved. Very delicious and I would recommend this to anyone who lives here or traveling in Chicago. read more

I hate that I didn't try more of the food! But what I had wasn't bad.. it was a quick bite to eat and gave me a hold me over while walking around the city. Recommended by a good friend so I went for a lunch since I was in the area. Nice cozy spot in Chicago. Amazing!!! Wow! Super great pricing, totally not what I expected for downtown Chicago. The roll I got was absolutely amazing, under control roll. Salad had a fantastic sauce, and the birthday mochi was a wonderful surprise. Btw, staff did a great job accommodating our larger party so don't feel nervous about coming with a big group! read more

Wow! This place is amazing. It's a casual restaurant with great prices and fantastic service. The wait staff are very attentive and pleasant. The food is prepared quickly and is absolutely delicious. How have I not found this place on my previous visits to Chicago? I'll definitely be back on future visits. read more
Trying to find a cheap, lighter dinner in the loop isn't always easy but Ryo Sushi met those criteria for us. I'll say I was sort of hesitant at first but was very pleasantly surprised at this little spot. It felt a bit tucked away and though it seemed fairly busy, it was nicely quiet. Its a smaller spot but very light and bright. My partner and I shared one of the combo meals and it was actually a great amount of food for the two of us. The sushi was surprisingly fresh and tasty. Crunch rolls were lightly crisp and the fish to rice ratio felt good to me. Servers were attentive but left you pretty alone so it was a nice, quiet casual date night feel. Definitely would recommend this spot for anyone in the loop and wanting a quiet sushi meal! Affordable, tasty, and well attended, what more do you need? read more

I never thought that twice in three days I would be eating sushi and asking, "Why is it chewy?" Yet here we are. With a rebounded appetite came a rebounded craving for sushi (something that is pretty much always there, if we are being perfectly honest). I ordered the Chicago and Volcano rolls. The Chicago was a tried and tested combination of salmon, eel, and cucumber. A fair amount of protein balanced with a little cucumber for crunch and freshness. The eel sauce was not overdone and gave a light sweetness and savoriness without overpowering the rest. A pleasant combination of flavors and textures. However, I once again found the salmon a little chewy. I don't have sushi chef training, so I can only guess as to why, only to say it made the roll a little less enjoyable. The Volcano was fair. It had salmon and tuna within (less salmon = less chewiness), and was topped with a mix of what I assume is minced spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and tempura. Now. while I don't know how much of this is me, I didn't find the topping very spicy. I also found the topping's texture overpowered anything the filling had going on. With this one, it's important to manage expectation, it is essentially a fish and rice roll (plus some tempura). I do want to give some general credit for well-cooked rice, for them not being stingy with proteins, and for reasonable prices, especially given the location. The service here is superb! It was attentive, friendly, and professional. As for the location/vibe, it is clean and modern. Finally, points for showmanship, as the Volcano came with a little "volcano" that put out a little cloud (dry ice, I think). Thus, Ryo has some A-OK sushi, but not something that has me itching to come back. While we can chalk up my quips with the Volcano to a matter of taste/preference, to quality of the salmon left at least a little to be desired. read more
Awesome sushi spot across from the hotel I was staying at. Decent hours and very polite and accommodating. Probably room for two or so folks so it isn't too big. Stopped here since we had time to kill and were hungry. Place is on the smaller side but still had decent seating. Service was very no frills; prompt and to the point. My husband and I ordered a few rolls, and overall the sushi was fresh and tasted amazing. Price point was decent as well. We decided to eat at Ryo Sushi Japanese Cuisine to get dinner before we headed to the Chicago airport. We were seated in the very back (next to the restroom). However, due to the layout, we could not see the restroom as the door was on our left and out of eye view. However, the wall was the restroom wall. We ordered Japanese Fried Chicken as our appetizer. I had the Shrimp Tempura entree. The other dish ordered was the Shrimp Tempura Roll, California Roll, and Tuna Roll Lunch entree which was shared by 2 people. Everything was delicious and was enough food for 3 people. I thought the waitress would forget about us being out of sight from the main part of the restaurant. She didn't. She came back to check on us periodically. She said the restaurant has been in business for 3 years. We would eat here again. Be aware, they don't have alcohol here- I had a canned iced tea and enjoyed the Dynamite Roll. I really enjoyed having dinner here for a couple of reasons. The service is efficient and minimal. Employees aren't really playing the role of servers and just let you be while being vigilant if anything is needed. I appreciated and loved that. Secondly, the food was so yummy in my tummy. This is my go to takeout/delivery sushi option in Chicago. If you go in person the location is pretty cute too! My friends and I order from here probably at least once a month. Everything is always prompt and consistent! All of the more simple items can be ordered as a traditional roll or hand roll. My go to order is the spicy tuna roll, a yellowtail roll, a house salad, and miso soup if I'm feeling it. I love the spicy tuna here! It is very finely cut up with what seems like some tempura flakes or something mixed in that makes the texture just perfect! All of the fish I've received from here has always tasted fresh, and I like that the rolls include a decent amount of fish they're more fish than rice. The house salad ginger sesame type dressing is delicious!!! I would literally drink it straight it's amazing. Everything is priced reasonably. If you are looking for a casual sushi spot, especially takeout or delivery I would HIGHLY recommend. I always miss this place when I'm not in Chicago! read more
Fell in love at Ryo Sushi! To be clear, I fell in love with the food, not with a person (ew!!!!). Great vibes from the get-go. Walk in and a Japanese guy is aggressively asking if we are eating in or doing take out. We say eating in and he points toward tables and says, "Go that way." Perfect intro to this dining experience. These people know their sh*t and want you to eat their delicious sushi and GTFO. I wholeheartedly agree with that mentality. We ordered a couple of starters, edamame and something fried that was amazing. There were four of us and we all wanted sushi so we ordered a love boat for 4 (we did NOT fall in love with each other, stop asking you gossip girl!!!!) I could envision a small crew of mice, possibly 4 shipmates, a first mate, and a captain mouse, manning (or mouse-ing lmao that's tooooo good) this vessel. But instead it was crewed by dead fish rolled up in seaweed and rice. Delish! We absolutely smashed this and left no crumbs and DEFINITELY didn't kiss at the end. Rounded the evening out with a nice walk through Millenium Park across the street. I highly recommend falling in love at this restaurant with friends...but not falling in love WITH friends but like...ugh, okay, we are all married together with 75 children now. Oops!
