I had casual diner with my nephew and he highly recommended this place. It did not disappoint. It's small, fast and somewhat casual. It's sit down but the service is so fast, you'll think it's fast food. I ordered the sushi combination and each of piece of fish was so fresh. It also came with California roll, that my nephew tried the first time. He had the tonkatsu ramen with extra egg. I tried a bite of his to see if it was good and tasted pretty good. Came back and it was even better than I remember. We both got combos. I got nigiri and my brother got sashimi...both so good. Don't forget the oshinko rolls. Eh I came back per my last review and this time the sushi was not so good. This time I ordered takeout so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. I ordered the miso soup, the fried gyoza, and two rolls. The miso was bad genuinely just not edible and this got thrown away. However the gyoza was VERY good so I loved this dish and thought they did well. Both of the rolls were just kinda meh. I didn't feel like either of them stood out to me. One was a rainbow roll and maybe a supercharged roll I can't remember the name of the second one but it had scallop and eel on top. I just felt like they both were kinda flavorless and bland. Coworkers were craving sushi while we were out here so I tagged along even though sushi wasn't calling to me on this particular day. In that case, I opted for their chicken teriyaki, which was made very fresh. The sushi looked good that my coworkers got, as did the gyoza. They had some really beautiful and fun presentation with their plates too, so if I was a local I'd definitely come back here to try some of their sushi dishes! We had a good meal at Ryo Sushi. Our rolls came out in nice presentation with dry ice uping the look overall. The only downside was our table placement. We ended up at the very back next to the bathroom, which was distracting and echo-y compared to the rest of the restaurant's more polished look and feel. I just wasn't impressed by the atmosphere. Recommended by a good friend so I went for a lunch since I was in the area. Nice cozy spot in Chicago. The staff was friendly and sometimes had almost a sixth sense about our little kids' needs - handing us new chopsticks only a few seconds after a kid dropped one, for example. I'll say I was sort of hesitant at first but was very pleasantly surprised at this little spot. It felt a bit tucked away and though it seemed fairly busy, it was nicely quiet. Its a smaller spot but very light and bright. My partner and I shared one of the combo meals and it was actually a great amount of food for the two of us. The sushi was surprisingly fresh and tasty. Crunch rolls were lightly crisp and the fish to rice ratio felt good to me. Servers were attentive but left you pretty alone so it was a nice, quiet casual date night feel. I never thought that twice in three days I would be eating sushi and asking, "Why is it chewy?" Yet here we are. With a rebounded appetite came a rebounded craving for sushi (something that is pretty much always there, if we are being perfectly honest). I ordered the Chicago and Volcano rolls. The Chicago was a tried and tested combination of salmon, eel, and cucumber. A fair amount of protein balanced with a little cucumber for crunch and freshness. The eel sauce was not overdone and gave a light sweetness and savoriness without overpowering the rest. A pleasant combination of flavors and textures. However, I once again found the salmon a little chewy. I don't have sushi chef training, so I can only guess as to why, only to say it made the roll a little less enjoyable. The Volcano was fair. It had salmon and tuna within (less salmon = less chewiness), and was topped with a mix of what I assume is minced spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and tempura. Now. while I don't know how much of this is me, I didn't find the topping very spicy. I also found the topping's texture overpowered anything the filling had going on. With this one, it's important to manage expectation, it is essentially a fish and rice roll (plus some tempura). I do want to give some general credit for well-cooked rice, for them not being stingy with proteins, and for reasonable prices, especially given the location. The service here is superb! It was attentive, friendly, and professional. As for the location/vibe, it is clean and modern. Finally, points for showmanship, as the Volcano came with a little "volcano" that put out a little cloud (dry ice, I think). Thus, Ryo has some A-OK sushi, but not something that has me itching to come back. While we can chalk up my quips with the Volcano to a matter of taste/preference, to quality of the salmon left at least a little to be desired. read more

My go to order is the spicy tuna roll, a yellowtail roll, a house salad, and miso soup if I'm feeling it. I love the spicy tuna here! It is very finely cut up with what seems like some tempura flakes or something mixed in that makes the texture just perfect! All of the fish I've received from here has always tasted fresh, and I like that the rolls include a decent amount of fish they're more fish than rice. The house salad ginger sesame type dressing is delicious!!! I would literally drink it straight it's amazing. Everything is priced reasonably. I could envision a small crew of mice, possibly 4 shipmates, a first mate, and a captain mouse, manning (or mouse-ing lmao that's tooooo good) this vessel. But instead it was crewed by dead fish rolled up in seaweed and rice. Delish! We absolutely smashed this and left no crumbs and DEFINITELY didn't kiss at the end. The atmosphere here is not too impressive, but we could observe the busy city street from our window booth. But the food was very good and the service very friendly and attentive. I am not a huge Sushi fan, but my 10 year old grandson really likes it so we go. We had the Gyozo dumplings, a rainbow roll and a red dragon roll. The presentation was outstanding and the dishes tasty. The Gyozo dumplings were perfectly fried, best of these I have had. I thought the prices and quantity (8 large pieces per roll) were reasonable. One suggestion-provide a bowl or other place to put one's used tea bag. I personally don't like very strong tea and like to remove the bag after a few minutes. I used my paper napkin, but then did not have a napkin to use. A few more napkins would be good as well.
