    Spicy Tuna Roll
    Ron T.

RYO Sushi is a standout spot for high-quality sushi in Chicago, delivering a great balance of freshness, creativity, and consistency. The fish tastes exceptionally fresh, with clean flavors that really shine whether you're ordering classic nigiri or more inventive rolls. Presentation is thoughtful without feeling overdone, and the menu offers something for both purists and adventurous diners. Prices reflect the quality, the value feels justified given the freshness of the ingredients and the overall execution. If you're looking for reliable, well-crafted sushi in Chicago, RYO Sushi is absolutely worth a visit.

I had casual diner with my nephew and he highly recommended this place. It did not disappoint. It's small, fast and somewhat casual. It's sit down but the service is so fast, you'll think it's fast food. I ordered the sushi combination and each of piece of fish was so fresh. It also came with California roll, that my nephew tried the first time. He had the tonkatsu ramen with extra egg. I tried a bite of his to see if it was good and tasted pretty good. It's not super fancy but if you want some fresh sushi in a relaxed atmosphere, this is the place.

Came back and it was even better than I remember. We both got combos. I got nigiri and my brother got sashimi...both so good. Don't forget the oshinko rolls. Hot tea, gyoza on top and you've got yourself a winner. Our server was the nicest guy in the loop and so helpful and patient with us.

Eh I came back per my last review and this time the sushi was not so good. This time I ordered takeout so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. I ordered the miso soup, the fried gyoza, and two rolls. The miso was bad genuinely just not edible and this got thrown away. However the gyoza was VERY good so I loved this dish and thought they did well. Both of the rolls were just kinda meh. I didn't feel like either of them stood out to me. One was a rainbow roll and maybe a supercharged roll I can't remember the name of the second one but it had scallop and eel on top. I just felt like they both were kinda flavorless and bland. Overall I'd say it was a hit or miss and was just sort of meh. I'd take them down a star as it seems the quality may have declined since the last time I was here.

I hate that I didn't try more of the food! But what I had wasn't bad.. it was a quick bite to eat and gave me a hold me over while walking around the city. I do wish that the rolls were stuffed a little more and that the fried bites were bigger. It's a nice place with a good bit of seating, the service was fast and the food came within 5min.

Coworkers were craving sushi while we were out here so I tagged along even though sushi wasn't calling to me on this particular day. In that case, I opted for their chicken teriyaki, which was made very fresh. The sushi looked good that my coworkers got, as did the gyoza. They had some really beautiful and fun presentation with their plates too, so if I was a local I'd definitely come back here to try some of their sushi dishes! It's not too far from Millennium Park and right near the Chicago Athletic Association hotel where we were staying. Great service and small little spot with some good bites.

We had a good meal at Ryo Sushi. Our rolls came out in nice presentation with dry ice uping the look overall. The only downside was our table placement. We ended up at the very back next to the bathroom, which was distracting and echo-y compared to the rest of the restaurant's more polished look and feel. I just wasn't impressed by the atmosphere. Still, the quality of the sushi is good. If you can, I'd recommend requesting a seat closer to the front of the restaurant. -AD

Stopped by here for lunch. No reservations needed and got a nice window seat. The waitress was very prompt in taking my order. I enjoyed everything from the house salad, the mountain roll & the crab Rangoon was quite delicious. The place is rather small but the decor was clean and contemporary. I was in and out and would definitely recommend this place for a friend who works nearby as the service and food was impeccable.

Food was pretty good! And the servers were very friendly. Loved the presentation of food and can't get enough of the sashimi plating! The set up and ambiance was casual and cozy. It was a little hot inside the place even with AC, even with not a lot of people inside. Loved their shrimp tempura udon.

Recommended by a good friend so I went for a lunch since I was in the area. Nice cozy spot in Chicago. I ordered the lunch special of Shrimp Tempura and Tuna roll ( sub from spicy roll) and it was delicious and very reasonably priced. Just what I needed for lunch. Will definitely go back to try more items on their menu. Service was great too!

Regular Sushi Platter! Comes with 7 Nigiri & California roll for $20.95!

This sushi spot is my go-to when I'm craving sushi but don't want to spend a fortune! On weekdays, there is typically no wait for walk-ins and the sushi is always really good! My favorite go-to plates are the Regular Sushi plate & the Mango Dragon roll I do wish the restaurant was a bit bigger as a few of the tables are right by the restrooms, which is not the most ideal place to eat.

I went late on a weeknight and Ryo was full, but with only a brief wait for a table. The staff was friendly and sometimes had almost a sixth sense about our little kids' needs - handing us new chopsticks only a few seconds after a kid dropped one, for example. The jalapeño sashimi starter was delicious, as was the vegetable Udon. Our sushi was beautifully presented, good quality and my kids couldn't get enough. I'll come back next time I'm nearby.

Candidly it wasn't on my to-do, but the restaurant happened to be on my route back to my hotel and I hadn't had dinner yet. I walked into the restaurant, and there was a spot open right at the bar waiting for me. I think it was meant to be. Loved the vibe of the restaurant, which was casual but trendy. Best part of all was the music. My ears perked up when I heard Hieroglyphics - The Who... A Plus Remix. Instantly felt "at home" with the underground, old school hip hop. Compliments to their curated Pandora playlist. I ordered the the spicy scallop roll, super san roll, and sawara (Spanish mackerel) nigiri. The spicy scallop roll was my favorite. The super san roll was a mix of their toro with varying fattiness. I appreciated that you could order half rolls at Sushi-San, which came out to 5 pieces instead of 10. This was more than enough food for me. The sawara was buttery and fresh. If you don't like the "fishiness" of saba, you'll enjoy sawara. Lastly, overall customer service was great. The food came out incredibly fast. The bartender who assisted me was awesome. He was attentive and personable.

I came with a friend for lunch during the week and they have a somewhat decent lunch special (for today's standards when factoring the cost of living and inflation). We took advantage of that and ordered the 3 combo platter per person so we got 6 total items since there was two of us. The highlights for us were three yellowtail yuzu sushi as well as the salmon rice bowl. The miso soup that came out first wasn't that great. It was overly salty. My friend who is from Japan that I ate with said this place was ok for American standards but not at all great compared to anything in Japan lol.

It clearly is for all their locations. Unfortunately, here at Chinatown's location, when they attempted to scan the card, the staff said it does not work and only works at the Printer's Row location. I ended up calling the Printer's Row location and had the team talk to the manager at the Chinatown location, and the manager at the Chinatown location kept their stance that it does not work, stating Printer's Row location does not know why the gift card does not work at the Chinatown location, and will not make any exceptions to accepting the gift card. Thankfully at the Printer's Row location, they are stating it's due to their system being new as they are a new location, and reason why the gift card is not working at all the locations yet which they are now working on to fix so it does not happen to any other customer moving forward. I just wish the Chinatown location showed some compassion to address the issue and still accommodate the inconvenience instead of us having to go back to the Printer's Row location to use the gift card Price: Approximately $20, not including tip for 2 people. There are lunch specials! Ambience: Indoor Seating Overall: Worst experience, especially to follow up my birthday celebration

My only critique is the pacing. Since the chef already had the fish sliced and prepped, I expected a smoother flow, but the meal took about an hour and a half for 14 pieces of sushi. It felt a bit slow, especially for a lunch service. That said, if you're looking for a reasonably priced omakase with quality fish, this is a solid choice.

Then we were taken back to our table for dinner. Our server was super friendly as well. Started with the miso soup and crispy tuna bites which were probably my favorite dishes. The taki yoki fritters weren't bad either. We saw people getting omakase, so we ordered a yummy looking piece they were receiving. It was just okay (chutoro truffle). The nigiri was also okay. The tuna piece was the only I really loved. The fish quality wasn't as high as I was expecting. The sushi was decent. A little too much truffle in the spicy blue fin tuna and a little too vegetable forward in the hamachi serrano. All in all, the atmosphere and amazing service pushed this up to a 4 for me.
