Wow, I was so excited to see this concept pop up in Chicago. I had been to a similar place in Seattle and it was good. Okay, so there are pros and cons to this concept: the one obvious one is that you don't know how long it's been sitting out. Also the rolls don't have descriptions. However, when I went everything was pretty fresh. I enjoyed my experience. There was a cashier available to help answer questions about the rolls. He also got me miso soup, which was steaming hot. The rice ratio was perfect as well. I was able to snag a seat at the counter, but I could only imagine if it were busy, you'd have to find somewhere else to eat. Not a big deal in the summer but in the winter and freezing temps, it's not convenient. Pretty easy experience just grab the tongs and a tray and choose whatever you want. Will definitely be coming back! Also, there's another place in Chicago w a similar concept, this one trumps that place by farrr.

Lots of sushi in a self serve, ala carte option for sushi. Fast, reasonably priced. We shared about 15 different types of sushi, all very tasty. Can't decide what you want? Get one of everything. They also do push pops. Very casual dining, counter style eat in available. Grab it, eat and go. Do it. No public bathroom which is nuts to me... I want to wash my hands before I eat, not an option here without imposing on a neighboring business. Bring wipes or hand sanitizer I guess, then enjoy the food.

VERY expensive. $17+ for one roll especially when there are other restaurants that exist where you can get AYCE sushi for $25. You are definitely paying for the novelty of the "push Pop" served sushi. It is such a fun and unique package and presentation. The sushi by weight was ok. The sushi appeared fresh and was convenient. Staff were friendly. There is very limited seating which made patrons very aggressive about getting a seat. There was a bar top along the window and maybe 10 high stools.

I was super surprised about this place. I've never been to this kind of set up. They a bunch or rolls out for you to pick from and take what you like on your plate. Or you can pick a full roll and they put it in a fun push up . The service was cool. They only have a couple seats inside.

I really love the concept of sushi by weight. It's perfect for a quick lunch when you don't want to commit to a full sit-down meal. My husband and I each grabbed a small tray of sushi, and it came out to about $30 total, which felt very reasonably priced for what we got. They offer a good selection of cooked and raw rolls and nigiri, which I appreciated, and there's counter seating if you want to eat there. Since we spent over $15, we were supposed to get a free miso soup, but we had to ask for it. The cashier seemed a bit lost and didn't automatically offer it. As for the sushi itself, the fish was okay, which feels fair given this is basically a fast-food sushi spot. I did notice a slightly fishy aftertaste, though. The nigiri had way too much rice, but I just cut off about half of it and that helped. Also worth noting, the wasabi paste is super intense, so use sparingly.

My 2nd time here and I enjoyed it more then the first time. The sushi was fresh as we came right after opening. We had the push sushi this time and really liked it. I'd be back more often but no longer work in the area.

Visited here to try the new push sushi . It was really good. Tried the hot Cheeto one. I was able to dine inside. They have a great assortment of complimentary sauces and ginger slices. Service was great, and the ambiance was good too.

Cute little place. Not too much seating but they also have to go containers. Great place to get sushi quick and try lots of things. Nice variety. You grab a container/tray and a pair of tongs and get what you want. You pay by the weight and I had a full tray and was able to try so many things for a reasonable price. Friendly service.

    Vicky H.

If you are craving for suishi and something quick, this is the place! Self-serve and pay by weight. Good selections of rolls and a smaller selection of nigiri, but all the basic kinds are available. In case you don't see what you want, just ask (I asked about unagi nigiri and they made a fresh tray). Inside the place, it has about 10 along-the-window bar seats. Cups of water is available for free. It is a clean, simple atmosphere! I will definitely be back!

Can you guess the weight? No, silly, not my weight. The weight of my sushi. Have you heard of Umi Sushi? Umi Sushi Chicago just opened a new location in chicago two months ago at 60 E Jackson Blvd. Here the sushi is priced by the weight. You mix and match your sushi, take as little or as much as you please. There's a lot to choose from, something for everyone! The sushi is constantly being restocked so it's always fresh and delicious. Umi Sushi is open Monday thru Saturday from 10:30 am to8 pm and Sundays 11 am to 7 pm.

Cute concept. Funky interior. Amazing sushi. Those are three phrases that describe Umi Sushi. When I heard a new, pick your own sushi spot opened I knew I wanted to try it. And boy did it deliver. The price is based on the weight. I paid $8 for mine. There is a good selection - both raw and cooked. The flavors from what I picked were all so tasty. They have free sauces, one of which was a spicy mayo, that was just amazing. This may be my new go-to spot when I am craving some sushi! I highly recommend it.

Found the perfect spot to satisfy your sushi cravings! Umi Sushi Chicago is located at 60 E Jackson Boulevard Whether you want a light lunch, or a full dinner, here you don't have to worry about leftovers. You buy by the weight. If you didn't have enough you can go back and buy a few more ounces. The selection is so large it's impossible to try everything on the first trip, even if you try to, and believe me, I did! This way, you also get to choose a variety of sushi. Don't let this no-frills self serve minimalistically decorated location fool you, their sushi packs a ton of flavor in each bite.

Fellow sushi lovers will know to struggle: you look at the menu and you want to try one of everything. But there are only so many pieces you can eat, so you settle on two or three if you're particularly hungry. Umi Sushi makes it so that you no longer have to choose! You take any pieces you want and pay by weight. To say I love this concept would be a gross understatement. I have come back again and again. Further, as they are in their soft opening, I can't wait to see what is in store as they iron out the kinks. For good: they have a fair selection of both raw and cooked options, the quality of the fish and rice is great, and the prices are reasonable given the area and product. I found the service to be friendly also. For improvement, it would help to include descriptions rather than just names - "T-Rex Roll" sounds fun, but what's in it? While customers can ask, this slows things down during a busy lunch rush. Additionally, many pieces rely heavily on crab sticks, which I find to be a lower-quality ingredient that detracts from the overall experience. Though that's partly my personal preference. Lastly, some pieces tended to fall apart too easily. All of this said, while Umi Sushi is not a destination in my opinion, it is perfect for a weekday lunch! It's healthier, you're able to get as much or as little as you want, and because of the self-service nature, the line can move a lot faster than a place that has to cook/assemble your food.

I almost decided to save Miru for our next visit, but I'm glad I made time for breakfast here on our departure day. Located inside the St. Regis Chicago, the restaurant offers beautiful views. The service was excellent--attentive, friendly, and professional. I ordered the Tokyo Breakfast. The salmon was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with rice, a soft-poached egg, and salmon roe. The miso soup was slightly salty on its own, but it worked surprisingly well when enjoyed with the rice toward the end of the meal. Overall, a memorable breakfast experience. The sushi is phenomenal, as were our drinks... but the other entrees are disappointing. The karaage and duck yakisoba in particular in quality could be from any corner restaurant in Chicago. The service lends itself more casual, and I noticed they were consistently quite slow to clear our table. I don't think people come here for the food as much as the views. Overlooking Streeterville from this angle and vantage was truly jaw dropping and for this reason I still strongly recommend Miru.

My only critique is the pacing. Since the chef already had the fish sliced and prepped, I expected a smoother flow, but the meal took about an hour and a half for 14 pieces of sushi. Then we were taken back to our table for dinner. Our server was super friendly as well. Started with the miso soup and crispy tuna bites which were probably my favorite dishes. The taki yoki fritters weren't bad either. We saw people getting omakase, so we ordered a yummy looking piece they were receiving. It was just okay (chutoro truffle). The nigiri was also okay. The tuna piece was the only I really loved. The fish quality wasn't as high as I was expecting. The sushi was decent. A little too much truffle in the spicy blue fin tuna and a little too vegetable forward in the hamachi serrano. All in all, the atmosphere and amazing service pushed this up to a 4 for me.

The restaurant houses both an omakase counter and an izakaya, but in completely separate spaces. The omakase side is an intimate, beautifully designed counter with around 10 seats.
