Lots of friend groups and others, enjoying their together time, incredible meals, and just sharing together. Serious stuff: Ambiance was very inviting, letting all clientele the opportunity for unfettered enjoyment. Food was flavorful, sumptuous - just delicious and more than ample. Service; quick, courteous, attentive. Waitstaff proving good information on menu items and pairing suggestions. They checked on us several time, ensuring everything was to our liking. Went here on a whim last night after reading all the glowing reviews on Yelp. Before that, I checked out a few eateries on the 4th floor of the Nordstrom building, but nothing really stood out, and honestly, none of them seemed very busy and the one restaurant Lao Sze Chuan was way too expensive, $30+ entrees were average and the place wasn't busy at all. So I decided to try Shang Noodle, which was tucked away on a side street off Grand Ave., just steps from Michigan Ave. It's across from the Nordstrom building, past Labriola's, down some steps and about a block away located on the south side of the street. As soon as I walked in, and I wasn't expecting this but the restaurant was extremely loud and nearly every seat was taken and everybody seemed to be enjoying themself, families, couples and groups. I figured that was a good sign and it signaled to me that the food was probably good! At first, the host wanted me to sit at the bar, which I politely declined because I don't usually sit at bars, also, I was there to eat, not pick up somebody! I noticed a small table open, pointed it out, and he kindly let me take it. No 'tude either! As far as my server goes, she was efficient, friendly, and very helpful with recommendations since it was my first visit and probably because I didn't look like the other customers who were more familiar with the cuisine. She suggested the pot stickers over the hot and sour soup, and the beef Chow Fun instead of chicken Chow Fun. The pot stickers were a little small, but crispy and very tasty. I also asked for some sweet and sour sauce on the side which I'm glad I did because it paired nicely with the pot stickers instead of that plain vinegar sauce they usually serve you. For my main dish, I ordered the char-grilled beef Chow Fun. The portion size was more than generous, and the char-grilled beef had a great umami flavor. A few of the rice noodles were a bit firm, likely undercooked, but overall though it was quite enjoyable. What I appreciated the most about Shang Noodle was the value. $18 for the beef Chow Fun and $9 for the pot stickers felt reasonable to me, considering it was on the dinner menu, the portion sizes were humongous and the restaurant was located on the Near North Side, which is usually quite pricey. I'll definitely be back, though next time I may try lunch instead, or go with friends of mine. read more

We were pleasantly surprised and definitely over ordered. - shumai were amazing and had big chunks of shrimp - har-gau were good especially with the chili oil and usually my husband doesn't like texture like this but enjoyed it - steamed soup dumpling were juicy and tender - house special chow mein - HIGHLY recommend, they said the noodles are made in house and you can tell. We went to Shang Noodle and got the jampong and chow fun. The portions were generous for the price, and the food tasted really good. The chow fun was still a little crispy, not exactly what I expected, but still done very well. The jampong uses egg noodles instead of rice noodles, which gave it a nice bouncy texture. I will say the soup was a bit light, so if you're coming for a soupy jampong, you might be a little disappointed. The ambience was on the nicer end for a casual spot, but you could easily go in casual wear. Service was great, too; they kept our waters refilled and checked in on us throughout the meal. Overall, the food was really good for the price, and the portions were more than enough. You could probably even split a dish between two people if you don't have a huge appetite. read more

Great location in/near Streeterville - we walked to Navy Pier after. Dim Sum options are on the menu, but we were warned they take 20 minutes so we did small plates instead. Nice selection. After a productive solo shopping day, I was starting to get hungry. I stumbled on Shang Noodle and was so excited to try it. The waiter was friendly and recommended the Sichuan Maocai Pot. I've never tried anything like it and honestly it was not for me. I know nothing about this type of cuisine and would like the explore more with the food. I didn't enjoy the numbing sensation which I now know is the whole purpose. I liked the flavor of the soup and the ingredients went well together, but once the numbing kicked in, it felt like I was having an allergic reaction (it was the numbing) and couldn't taste anything else. This is a wonderful, consistently good Chinese restaurant tucked in the heart of Chinatown. It can be a little hard to find at first, but it's absolutely worth the effort once you get there. We came as a very large group -- about 20 people -- and while they initially weren't sure about taking a reservation, they graciously made it work for us, which we really appreciated. The staff handled our group efficiently and with a smile the entire evening. I ordered the Vietnamese shrimp spring rolls, which were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. My husband had the pork udon noodle soup -- a massive, comforting bowl that could easily be shared. The portions here are generous across the board. Our teenage son ordered the beef fried rice and managed to finish the entire thing, which says a lot! Overall, the food was excellent, the portions large, and the atmosphere warm and lively. The wide rice noodles were cooked well and the beef was tender and tasty. I would recommend to the restaurant that they fry or at least serve the pig ears warm. Ends up they were left to cook too long in the kitchen, overcooked, and all the soup disappeared. They refunded us, so I can forgive this. Scallion Pancakes - $11 - Thin, crispy, and flakey layers of deliciousness. 5/5 stars. Red Chili Chicken - $17 - Popcorn chicken was cooked perfectly. It's crispy and juicy, and the chili spices are tasty and not too spicy. If you eat the bigger pieces of chili, the spice will catch up to you, I promise. 5/5 stars. House Special Chow Mein - $18 - I got this with beef. Everything was great. Beef was soft and tender, wok flavor throughout the noodles, and a good portion. Ambiance is very nice. Casual and quaint. We ordered drinks (Lychee Martini, Old-Fashion of the East), Spicy Edamame, and Hot and Sour soup to begin. Drinks were amazing. Full of flavor. Hot and sour soup was rich in flavor, and very tasty. Spicy garlic edamame was seasoned really nicely. For main course we shared family style and got the Red Chili Chicken and the Mayo Tofu (v). Both dishes amazing. Red Chili Chicken made your tongue tingle with every bite but leaving you wanting more. Mapo Tofu was comforting and very filling. There is a variety of chinese and korean food on the menu. We got the Taiwanese beef noodle soup and jjajangmyeon. Both noodles tasted really fresh and had great flavor. Probably one of the most off-putting experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. I was visiting Chicago with my family and saw that this place has a weekday closing time of 10pm on their website, so we went on a Thursday night around 9:15. We were greeted at the podium and we asked for a table of 5. She said they're doing last call because apparently they close at 9:30, and asked us if that was okay. We were so hungry after a long day and said it was fine, but we would've completely understood if they turned us away. They didn't, and seated us anyway. Another girl who was our server came to us with an attitude soon after and asked if we were ready to order when we'd just sat. We barely cracked open the menus when she suggested a few dishes to us then left us for maybe 2 minutes before coming back to ask if we were ready. I asked if we could have a couple more minutes to decide and she said sure before stepping away, then turned back around to us and asked if we could order in one minute instead lol. Never have I ever been rushed like this before. And like I said above, we would've been fine with being turned away if it would've been too much to have us at that time of night. We ordered after that one minute was given to us so graciously just so we could get out of there at this point. Food came out very quickly and very hot which was great. The Mongolian beef and honey sesame chicken were good. The fried garlic fried rice was bland unfortunately but it was fine from chili oil and the sauce the meat dishes had. 2 out of 3 dishes were good and could've made our time there worth it, but that service was just unbelievable. We were so hungry that we ate in 15 minutes and left before 9:45 anyway. I hope no one experiences what we did because it was such a terrible first impression of the restaurant. Bummer because it's a nice looking place, cozy, warm, but I'd personally prefer to be told they're closing rather than be rushed like that. I walked past this place in December and bookmarked it right away because it smelled so good, and yesterday I got to try it! Love Asian food, especially when there's a veggie friendly option! My sister, brother in law, and I got take out and shared. We got the dry tofu veggie pot (I think it had a different name) with the in-house made noodles, scallion pancakes, and bok choy with rice. We got it all no spice because my sister doesn't like spicy haha but I would've gotten medium. It was all good! The noodles were the best part, followed by the bok choy. There were barely any tofu pieces in the tofu dish, it was mostly vegetables. Next time I think I'd get the mapo tofu so I could get mostly tofu. It wasn't busy at all for a Monday lunch. We were seated immediately and the food came out quickly. We really enjoyed the fried pork belly, beef noodle soup, and shrimp fried rice.
