It had a crunchy exterior with a dusting of chili powder, while the meat was incredibly tender. It came with a sweet chili dipping sauce that balanced the heat of the chili powder perfectly. I don't have much tolerance for spicy food, but I kept going back for "just one more bite." It was that addictive! For the main course, we tried the Mongolian Beef paired with Egg Fried Rice. The beef was so tender it practically melted in your mouth, and the vegetables had a nice bite to them--the perfect combination. We got a few items such as the chicken lo mein ($19), red chicken chili :($19), 2 order of steamed soup dumplings ($18), string beans ($14), eggplant ($16) and the quality was great and super authentic. However the 30+ min wait for the veggie orders came after the entire meal when every thing was ordered at the same time, they somewhat rushed us at the end so they can sit their regulars, and the steamy soup dumplings were small and stuck to the paper wrapping and not served w the traditional ginger. This place is really good. We got the twice cooked pork belly and house chow mien (the chow mien is the most popular) and the dishes were SO flavorful. The chow mien tasted extra good with hot chili oil, so I'd recommend eating it with that. The dishes weren't too greasy. The waiters were really nice and good came out pretty quickly. The pictures of the whole restaurant you see posted on yelp look a little nicer than it actually is XD. But hey, I won't complain as long as the food comes out great. We also really liked the Singapore Vermicelli that had a slight curry flavor and the Cumin Lamb. We were in Chicago for our son's graduation from SAIC and wandered into Shang without a reservation. The hostess seated us quickly and graciously - lucky us! We had starters - fried calamari and a spring roll sort of thing. We also had eggplant, another stir fry and walnut shrimp. All of it was fresh and delicious. My one recommendation would be to pay close attention to the menu. I didn't realize that the shrimp in the walnut shrimp was battered and fried - would have picked something else if I had. This place was great! So great in fact that we ate here twice in 3 days. The first time I got their chow mein noodles, which they say was their specialty. They were very good and I found it to be a rather generous portion. The second time, I got cumin lamb, which was also quite good. Both times we also shared some crab Rangoons and my wife got some kind of breaded chicken (sesame chicken?) and shared that with our daughter. The chicken and lamb came with a side of rice. The place is nice, clean and modern; people seemed to be dressed a bit nicer than average there. Service was good and they brought our food out faster than I expected. We went to Shang Noodle and got the jampong and chow fun. The portions were generous for the price, and the food tasted really good. The chow fun was still a little crispy, not exactly what I expected, but still done very well. The jampong uses egg noodles instead of rice noodles, which gave it a nice bouncy texture. I will say the soup was a bit light, so if you're coming for a soupy jampong, you might be a little disappointed. The ambience was on the nicer end for a casual spot, but you could easily go in casual wear. Service was great, too; they kept our waters refilled and checked in on us throughout the meal. Overall, the food was really good for the price, and the portions were more than enough. You could probably even split a dish between two people if you don't have a huge appetite. read more

The inside is nice, but it's nothing to brag about, we got there and we ordered soup dumplings, they were stuck together and some already had holes in them, so there were nothing to write about. Then we asked the waiter and he recommended the Tamine beef soup and the Kung pow chicken, we weren't in the mood for soup even though it seems highly rated so we went with the Kung pow chicken and the fried Hong Kong noodles with beef. This is a wonderful, consistently good Chinese restaurant tucked in the heart of Chinatown. It can be a little hard to find at first, but it's absolutely worth the effort once you get there. We came as a very large group -- about 20 people -- and while they initially weren't sure about taking a reservation, they graciously made it work for us, which we really appreciated. The staff handled our group efficiently and with a smile the entire evening. I ordered the Vietnamese shrimp spring rolls, which were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. My husband had the pork udon noodle soup -- a massive, comforting bowl that could easily be shared. The portions here are generous across the board. Our teenage son ordered the beef fried rice and managed to finish the entire thing, which says a lot! Overall, the food was excellent, the portions large, and the atmosphere warm and lively. Ambiance is very nice. Casual and quaint. We ordered drinks (Lychee Martini, Old-Fashion of the East), Spicy Edamame, and Hot and Sour soup to begin. Drinks were amazing. Full of flavor. Hot and sour soup was rich in flavor, and very tasty. Spicy garlic edamame was seasoned really nicely. For main course we shared family style and got the Red Chili Chicken and the Mayo Tofu (v). Both dishes amazing. Red Chili Chicken made your tongue tingle with every bite but leaving you wanting more. Mapo Tofu was comforting and very filling. Went here on a whim last night after reading all the glowing reviews on Yelp. Before that, I checked out a few eateries on the 4th floor of the Nordstrom building, but nothing really stood out, and honestly, none of them seemed very busy and the one restaurant Lao Sze Chuan was way too expensive, $30+ entrees were average and the place wasn't busy at all. So I decided to try Shang Noodle, which was tucked away on a side street off Grand Ave., just steps from Michigan Ave. It's across from the Nordstrom building, past Labriola's, down some steps and about a block away located on the south side of the street. As soon as I walked in, and I wasn't expecting this but the restaurant was extremely loud and nearly every seat was taken and everybody seemed to be enjoying themself, families, couples and groups. I figured that was a good sign and it signaled to me that the food was probably good! At first, the host wanted me to sit at the bar, which I politely declined because I don't usually sit at bars, also, I was there to eat, not pick up somebody! I noticed a small table open, pointed it out, and he kindly let me take it. No 'tude either! As far as my server goes, she was efficient, friendly, and very helpful with recommendations since it was my first visit and probably because I didn't look like the other customers who were more familiar with the cuisine. She suggested the pot stickers over the hot and sour soup, and the beef Chow Fun instead of chicken Chow Fun. The pot stickers were a little small, but crispy and very tasty. I also asked for some sweet and sour sauce on the side which I'm glad I did because it paired nicely with the pot stickers instead of that plain vinegar sauce they usually serve you. For my main dish, I ordered the char-grilled beef Chow Fun. The portion size was more than generous, and the char-grilled beef had a great umami flavor. A few of the rice noodles were a bit firm, likely undercooked, but overall though it was quite enjoyable. What I appreciated the most about Shang Noodle was the value. $18 for the beef Chow Fun and $9 for the pot stickers felt reasonable to me, considering it was on the dinner menu, the portion sizes were humongous and the restaurant was located on the Near North Side, which is usually quite pricey. I'll definitely be back, though next time I may try lunch instead, or go with friends of mine. read more
