I have been coming to Koi Noodles since moving to Chicago after I stumbled upon it one day. The food is really good and everything is definitely made from scratch. They have a lot of vegan/vegetarian options too and they even have Karaoke/DJ nights on the weekends. Today I got the 5 Spice Fries and the Veggie Lanzhou Soup. The fries were hot and fresh, they smelled amazing! I like the spice on them and the dipping sauce was okay! (Im not a huge mayo girl) The soup was piping hot and I really liked all the veggies. I've tried Koi Noodles a couple of times now, and overall, I think there's some potential, but the experience has been a bit inconsistent. The location is very convenient, and they have a great happy hour with some good options. I also noticed they seem to offer karaoke on Friday nights, which is a fun addition. The food was great on my first visit, but this time around it was just okay. The biggest issue for me is the inconsistency, both in the food and the portion sizes, which feel a little small for the price. Both times I visited, there was only one waitress working, so I understand that she may have been juggling a lot. However, the service could definitely be friendlier. When I asked for a recommendation, I was told that everything on the menu is good because otherwise they wouldn't offer it. I understand the point, but the response came across as a little snarky and wasn't particularly helpful. I came to Koi Noodles for the first time and tried their lunch special. I had the ramen with pork belly as well as their pork wontons. I liked the pork wontons and I was pleased that they had a great ratio of filling to wrapper. Then came the ramen w pork belly. The egg was great as well as any toppings - but the pork belly was burnt to a crisp. One piece was so bad that I felt like it could be charcoal. If you haven't eaten at Koi Noodles (west loop), you're really missing out. With the classic look of a japanese restaurant, but, at the same time, it seems to be casual.l and unassuming. Everyone feels comfortable here. Where else can you get home made pork wantons and crab rangoon? The pork belly crisps are so delicious and the Host Cocktails are wonderful! We enjoyed the Pear Blossom special, Lychee Beachy, Tokyo Old Fashioned, and Lychee Lemonade and we would highly recommend all of them! We enjoyed our meal in this clean bright space on a Friday night at the perfect location close to all the west loop action. They have great deals - we took advantage of the buy one get one soju bottles and got to try the lychee and yogurt flavor. Both were tasty! Service was great and quick as well. The staff really cares about the authenticity and quality of the food. We certainly could tell through the presentation and taste of the dishes as well! We started with the koi combo for appetizer, and this had a little sampling of everything. Everything in this sampler was so tasty - especially the bulgogi meat. I definitely recommend this dish to start. I also got a salad that paired nicely with the rest of the meal. For our entree, we shared the signature noodle soup made spicy with beef. This was delicious and kind of like a spicy beef ramen. I had a side of kimchi, and we also ordered the garlic edamame. Everything was amazing. Extraordinarily bad if you've ever had a decent bowl of noodles. They claim the noodles are handmade/hand pulled but I saw the noodles come out of plastic packets. They are definitely machine made or ordered from somewhere. They also overcooked them to the point they barely had any chew. Ordered the wagyu short rib and somehow they managed to make wagyu tough. All of the toppings were cold, even the wagyu short rib was not properly warmed. Ordered the level 3 spice but was just moderately spicy. Server forgot my drink and had to flag her down for utensils and the beer I ordered. Our entrees began to arrive before the appetizers. All of the entrees arrived for 4 of the 5 members of our party. When we asked about the final entree and the appetizers, we were told it was on the way. Needless to say, the last entree arrived cold and two of the four appetizers arrived. Love it here!! I've always walked past and never went in. They had an advertisement for $8 drinks so my friend and I figured why not try it out. Unfortunately I'm convinced that a lot of these reviews are exaggerated. As another reviewer mentioned, they offer a discount on your meal & a free dessert for reviews/social media videos. It creates an inaccurate picture of what people think about the food. The Good: Nice, clean open restaurant with fast service, friendly servers. The Bad: The food was only mediocre. Their signature Koi Noodle Soup sounded amazing but really lacked the depth that I expect from Asian dishes. The noodles are good, but the broth was nothing special. There are so many other nearby Asian places with deep, flavorful broths but for a signature dish this was very mid-range , "eh .. I guess I can eat this broth." The worse part for me was the meat. Short rib should be super tender and fall off the bone. The server described it as this but this was very chewy and fatty. Maybe it wasn't cooked long enough? I gave most of my meat chunks to my husband because I couldn't eat them. His brisket wasn't much better. I LOVE food and was looking forward to a good lunch. We live in the suburbs and only come into the city every few months. I was disappointed that we had such a mediocre lunch when there are many other delicious nearby options.
