Beef truffle wonton ramen Crispy Fried Oysters Chicken Gyoza
    Adele B.

The food was delicious, fresh and hot! The staff were friendly and food came out pretty quick. The restaurant looked pretty casual but it reminded me of some restaurants I visited in Tokyo I got beef ramen with the truffle wonton. The beef was tender and the ramen was cooked perfectly. The broth was seasoned well and gave everything a nice flavor! The truffle wonton was, meh. The potstickers were good, pretty standard. The fried oysters are a must get! I put lemon juice on mine instead of the dip it comes with, amazing! Be careful, they squirt! The drink was good just a little too sweet and I asked for lite ice and most of the drink was ice.

Update after my last meal 7 months ago: Gyuro Ramen has done it AGAIN! My sister and I (who live out-of-state) have been talking about the last ramen experience we had here and couldn't wait to have it again! Well folks, the opportunity arose again with us both being in Chicago and we hopped right on it! We popped in on a Saturday evening, right after the dinner rush, and were promptly seated. We grazed over the menu lightly, since we already knew what we wanted to order: the chicken karaage and tuna poke as appetizers, the premium signature gyukotsu for myself, and the prime shoyu for my sister. Everything was brought out quite quicky and it was all SMASHINGLY delicious! The chicken kaarage was fried to perfection and paired beautifully with the spicy mayo, the tuna poke was fresh and a perfect palate cleanser, and both of the bowls of ramen we ordered were beautifully composed with the most harmonious of flavors. I was WOW'd by the premiere bowl! While a bit pricier than the rest of the ramen options, it was loaded with a variety of proteins, the noodles were just the right amount of chewy, and the marinated egg was *chef's kiss*. A HUGE shout out to the waitstaff, who were incredibly kind, and checked in on us throughout our meal experience. The overall ambience and vibe of Gyuro Ramen is always so enjoyable! It's a spot great for a date - whether with a friend or love interest - where you can have great conversation over a great meal. My recommendation remains the same as last time: HIGHLY RECOMMEND and will certainly be returning again soon!

I would've given it a four star if it wasn't a staff giving us attitude for being surprised that steamed dumplings come with spicy powders as a default (who does that?). We ordered steamed dumplings for the kids, but they couldn't eat those cuz of the spicy powders. The staff came over and told us they can't remove the spicy powder from the dumplings. But, like, they could've just not sprinkle the powder on top, it's not like it's part of the filling?! She left for a while and eventually came back and said they could give us another one without the spicy powder. But seriously, who sprinkles spicy powder on steamed dumpling? I don't think any Asian cuisine does that as a default. We had a large party and two household ordered extra noodles, they only brought out one initially. When we asked for the second one, they got all confused, and they had to check all our bills to make sure they didn't give us extra noodles and that we were billed properly. Seems a bit disorganized if they can't handle a party of 10. We correctly guessed that it was non-Japanese people running the shop based on the dialect they spoke... but alas, it's expected that Asians from that region would give us that type of attitude lol so we forgive them for it. Now onto the actual food, it was just OK. My husband ordered a yasai and my oldest ordered a kinoko. I ordered a rosu for the kids. The flavors are not bad but nothing really stood out. The duck meat wasn't as tender as it could be. The kids didn't really like the dumpling/gyoza fillings either. For the price, I really expected better. I got the wakame seaweed salad and the hiyatakko. The wakame salad is just your store bought wakame mixed with some leafs, and the hiyatakko is nothing like the Japanese flavor, it's more Chinese and the tofu they selected isn't even the silky one, so it's actually bland and chalky with very weak chili oil flavor. The presentation is all pretty good tho. Looks good, but tastes are all just mediocre. We probably won't try this place again, at least not this location.

Walking into the restaurant I immediately felt like I was taken back. The vibe was eclectic with throwback sign and videos playing of Japan. We ordered the signature gyokotsu and the spicy garlic ramen with a side of seasonal truffle waffle fries and kimchi. The Wagyu ramen was a bit of a let down as the meat was well done and braised when I was expecting it to be on the raw side. The broth was rich and creamy which helped overall. The garlic miso ramen was a bit underwhelming as the broth this time was pretty weak with not much spice or garlic but the toppings were much better, refreshing and complemented the soup. We enjoyed some mocktails to pair with the sides and I wouldn't recommend ordering them again except the kimchi. The mocktails were filled with ice and lacking in fruit flavor and tasted more like sparkling water with a splash of juice. The truffle fries came out cold and stale as it felt like they were left out for a while. For an expensive seasonal item, it wasn't worth getting. I would come back again for the ramen but there's so many other exciting spots to try in Chicago.

Great ramen (especially for vegetarians!!) and cute hole in the wall ambience (reminded me of my travel to Japan). Service could be a bit faster but it is also the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so it's understandable. I think it's sooo hard to come by solid vegetarian/vegan ramen, so this place pleasantly surprised me!! I tried chicken gyoza, veggie gyoza (I preferred it to the chicken one), and spicy veggie tofu ramen (my favorite!!). Pictured below is also beef ramen, but I did not try this.

I had the pleasure of trying this spot out, on a whim. The ramen DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I had the Garlic Miso Ramen w/ Beef Chishu and I'm still thinking about it. The Shrimp Gyozas were delicious and had a very fresh taste. My server was very helpful and he took the time to share his recommendations for each thing. I like that he was candid in his opinion of certain things and didn't try to encourage something he didn't like. The atmosphere was interesting to me. The space was roomy and felt like an Anime restaurant.

Inaccurate use of Japanese words for the menu and offerings. For example, "Shoyu" means soy sauce based ramen- however they use the name for beef and mushroom broth based ramens. The flavors were ok. The "beef shoyu prime ramen" tastes more like pho than actual ramen. The flavors were decent but definitely a bit mislead.

Super aesthetic ramen shop in West Loop that has a ton of ramen options as well as donburi. Absolutely love the interior of this place. The vibes are amazing. All the food was flavorful and memorable.

The ramen, meat, and broth were good. The waitress who took care of our table was fantastic - very accommodating to our modifications. It's worth a try but nothing extraordinary.

This spot is super trendy and fun! I love the decorative interior, making it seem like you are eating in the streets of Tokyo. The seating is very casual - wooden tables and stools. There wasn't a spot to place our coats so I just kept mine on. I would probably only come if you're looking for a quick casual bite! I did the Spicy Garlic Miso and added a side of the level 3 Hell Sauce. The Spicy Garlic Miso was flavorful and with the level 3 Hell Sauce, it was a perfect spice level for me (I love spicy food). I usually eat my ramen with chashu pork, but I tried the Wagyu Misuji and it was so good! Would def rec this protein choice. Their Takoyaki wasn't bad! I just wish that there was more sauce on them. Overall, great spot for last minute ramen!

    Chicken Karaage Don

Amazing dinner!! BYOB as well which we love. Liquor store is a 3 minute walk away. We had ramen, takoyaki, gyoza, and chicken karaage don--all were fantastic. I'd go back every week if I could.

Back to front: Spicy Garlic Miso w. Soft Shell Crab and Beef ChaShu, Chicken Karaage, Steamed Bun w. Crispy Soft Shell Crab, Shoyu Prime
    Amanda P.

TAKEOUT REVIEW We ordered through DoorDash and everything arrived pretty quickly! The broth comes separately to avoid spillage and from the noodles soaking it all up! It was easily reheated and poured into the to-go bowls to eat. The soft shell crab was still crispy and very yummy. Chicken karaage was average but the sauce made it sooo much better. As for the ramen, the spicy garlic miso was on the saltier side but the beef chashu and crab were spot on. The shoyu prime broth tasted very similar to beef pho broth. Overall we liked everything just the broth was a bit too salty.

Out of all the ramen spots I've tried in Chicago, this one is by far my favorite. I was skeptical at first, thinking it might lean more toward a touristy, just-okay flavor, but I ended up really enjoying it. There's street parking out front, plenty of tables inside, and I also really liked the restaurant's interior design. I ordered the signature ramen with wagyu--the meat was a bit tough, but it didn't bother me. The broth was so delicious that I finished the entire bowl. The soft-shell crab ramen was definitely worth the price. Plus side is that the staff are really nice so I had no issues ordering as well as waiting for my order. Would come back again!

The chicken ramen was also extremely underwhelming, ZERO FLAVOR in the broth and the chicken!!!!! The meat itself was very moist, but the broth honestly tastes like a can of low sodium chicken broth. Really embarrassing excuse for ramen. I really expected more out of this place. Can't compete with A-tier Asian food in other areas. Service was pretty poor too. One girl for the entire floor of tables. Ignored us the entire time apart from getting our orders. Overall not worth coming back when there's so much better Asian food out there to try.

All my previous personal experiences…read morehave always proven to me that restaurants with names that don't represent their culture in distinct ways are generally subpar. For example, I would usually never even think to step into a restaurant named Best China House, Sushi Bistro, or Mom's Korean Restaurant. (Apologies if your shops are named as such. These were meant to be generic examples) Oh, how times have changed. I would have never thought having a bowl of ramen at a Monster Ramen would give me this much pleasure. Part of it will (in fact, most of it) be on me and my general philosophy on fusion cuisine and outdated gemerational gap. There was definitely a time when avoiding agorementioned type of restaurants may have been deemed smart. But I feel the new generation of restaurant owners and chefs have up'd their games in not only at better food making, but also accepting of a bit more irony. Anyone who knows me knows how much I stay away from trying anything "fusion." It's kinda funny to myself how hypocritical it is that I would be totally okay in substituting an ingredient or two when I'm missing some when cooking, but when it comes to paying money to sit and eat that I would judge chefs by thier style of cooking. Yes, a big part of it is based on a large pool of personally gathered data, but I do acknowledge that I need to open myself up a bit more. Case in point. I was recommended MR by a fellow Yelper and I decided to give it a whirl. I happened to have a friend and his son with me, so I was able to do small tastings of 3 different ramen. And boy, was I pleasantly surprised. We collectively had bowls of shio, shoyu and miso specials. Plus, I ended up getting the Summer Special bowl to go for my wife. All of them had their individual charm to them but more importantly, each of them were made to perfection when it came to broth seasoning and noodle texture, which are THE two most important aspect of ramen, in my opionion. Not too salty nor bland soup. Perfectly dense noodles. I just loved all four! It wad when I tasted the yuzu in tgeir shio ramen that my wife would love it. Even though I brought her the spicy Sunmer version home, I still think it'll be worth bringing her and our daughter back when we get a chance to. Our server Dionne (I think) was most pleasant and helpful. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great, too. It helped that I came before the dinner rush, although, I can also see more lively vibe being nice as well. Will be back with the fam definitely!
