As a big dim sum fan, I thought this place was awesome! We arrived right when they opened and were the first group seated. By the time we finished our meal, the dining room was completely full and there was even a line forming outside, which is always a great sign. Unlike some traditional dim sum restaurants, they don't use carts here. Instead, you order from a paper menu, which I actually prefer because it's easier to browse all the options and make sure you don't miss anything. Everything we ordered was freshly made, looked beautiful, and tasted delicious. We even had to stop and take photos before digging in! The staff was attentive throughout our meal, and the food came out quickly despite how busy the restaurant became. Superb Chinese spot in Chicago's Chinatown. Huge seating area and very nice staff. But you're going here for the Dim Sum. They have a lot of it and it's ALL good. I'm partial to the vegetarian one as well as the shrimp one. Really really good. However, do not, do not sleep on the Mongolian beef. It's exceptional and they have great sticky rice to accompany it. Wait staff is somewhat slow and ice water needed to be requested and not served automatically. Overall, the decor was upgrade from last I was there (summer 2025). It's been a while since we had dim sum at this long time classy and comfortable Chinatown staple of ours. And double yikes, it's been 10 years since my last review here. Anyway, our party of 5 returned for a week day dim sum outing, and the current ongoing promo is 20% off for cash only dining on M-F from 10am - 3pm. The dim sum was all excellent except maybe the spare ribs with black bean sauce which were not tender and somewhat chewy. They are under new ownership and we didn't recognize any of the employees, but service was the usual attentive and excellent here. We also had a delicious chicken & shrimp pad Thai dish which would have been an atypical Thai offering in years past from their traditional Cantonese menu. There's also a $1 pp tea charge. As I was looking at our downtown skyline out of the 2nd floor picture window on a beautiful day, I was thinking this place is still the perfect place to bring an out of towner and impress someone who is new to both Chicago as well as Chinatown. Also, with the main Chinatown parking lot now being managed via a pay-by-phone Metropolis phone app (see my separate review for Chinatown Parking), don't forget to scan the restaurant's QR code before you depart for the significant parking lot discount. I've only had dim sum here but it turns out their dinner menu is also very good! My favorite was the umami mushroom dish with a side of rice. Also, our waiter was very attentive. We had a birthday celebration dinner & he joined in on our surprise by sneaking in the cake on a rolling food cart haha :) it was a lot of fun. read more

Phoenix is an old standby dim sum restaurant that I've been to quite a few times over the years. The dim sum is fresh from top quality ingredients, served hot to the table and always offers a huge endless variety to choose from. Service is excellent with roomy tables overlooking the Chicago skyline. However, I was really disappointed as they did away with the traditional cart system that came around to the tables. They do give you a detailed pictured menu of all the dim sum and you order off that. The dim sum quality and taste are the same and the food is super hot when it arrives at your table. They do have a couple carts mingling around the dining room stacked with one particular dim but that's about it. No matter what you order, it's all really tasty with accompanying hoisin, soy, plum sauces and chili garlic oil. Prices and service are comparable to other dim sum places but Phoenix is still the best dim sum in Chinatown! Personal Tip: Order most of your dim sum at one time with second round afterward. They get a little confused as they use the 1 single paper ticket order and then add on to that for 2nd & 3rd rounds. The food is usually very good whenever we come here! My entire family usually goes, so they tend to give us a private room. My favorite items are usually the roasted pork or lobster and noodles! The service was amazing last time we went - they would always come by with water or change out our plates when they looked dirty. The ambiance is pretty simple. It's been a long time since I've been to Phoenix but I remembered the food being very decent. We came to celebrate CNY. The service was okay, not the best. However, we got the sauces we needed for the different types of food we ordered. Our hot tea and water cups were always refilled. I'm not going to go through all of the dishes we ordered, but they were all good. Just an observation but I noticed that some of the Americans that gave the place 1 star, ordered the typical American dishes. Whereas the Asian reviewers ordered dishes that Americans won't ever touch. In my pictures, you won't see any orange chicken, chicken fried rice, Mongolian beef, etc. That's just a FYI, those ratings are not very accurate. If you parked in either of two big parking lots, remember to get your ticket validated at the restaurant before you leave. It should say $2. If it doesn't say that, then you did it wrong. Overall rating would be 3.5. If you order real Asian food, then you'll have a decent experience despite the service. The American food.. well.. don't expect much. I enjoy "old school" dim sum, where the carts are pushed around, and you select what you want off them. That was how I thought dim sum was served at Phoenix, when I read reviews that said your meals were brought to you by the ladies with the carts. But that's not quite the case here. You're given a large menu with names and photos of each offering, and a small box where you can indicate how many bowls of plates of an item you want. You give your filled-out paper to someone, and THEN the ladies will begin stopping at your table, if what they have on their cart is something you ordered. That really is a more efficient method. You know you'll be able to get exactly what you wanted, the kitchen knows exactly what to prepare (especially helpful on slower days), and you can easily order more and take your leftovers with you. As first time diners here, all of this wasn't always immediately obvious, but the staff are very friendly and helpful assisting you. Everything we ordered came out reasonably quick and was quite good. One thing I wish they had brought us was sauces. We didn't get any, we didn't ask for any, but some of our dishes came in sauces, so that satisfied us. If you come here on a weekend, you really need to get here within the first hour, otherwise be prepared to wait a bit for a table. read more

There is a paper menu you can fill out for dim sum and a full menu that has other items. I ordered west lake beef soup and it's tasty and refreshing. Just to be clear, this is definitely more 2.5 than 2 for me but it was another bizarre night for me. So, last weekend when I went to Phoenix, it was the beginning of a night out in Chinatown for our group of 10 people. Ahead of karaoke at No. 18 (a favorite), we stopped in to Phoenix at the recommendation of a friend. As we arrived one by one, we reached the restuarant which is on the second floor of an older building. There was no host or anything, so we wandered in aimlessly to a very large dining room. The dining room has a beautiful view of the city skyline, and was also decorated like an old school dim sum joint (because it clearly is just that). Anyway, as we cntinued walking through the dining room an older man, who I'm assuming is the owner ushered us over and told us what table to go to, how he knew I haven't the faintest idea. As we sat down we tried to order some drinks and the same old man said "no, can't order. We don't have a bartender tonight. Beer and wine only." So, instead I ordered a coke. The coke came out flat and warm and so did everyone else's. It was also clearly Pepsi, so my running theory is that they gave us a 2 liter of pepsi that was in the back with some ice. We then ordered some dim sum and some additional dishes and the same older man came back and told us, sorry no siu mai, which for our group is something we really look forward to. My favorite of the dim sum dishes was the BBQ beef, and of the entrees, the General Tao's chicken. Everything else was relatively bland, mushy, and overall just not satisfying. The complimentary tea was great and although we had to ask for it, we did end up getting more water throughout the meal. read more

What really stood out was the CHAR SIU BAO because it had a pineapple bun on top that made a great combo! Was really good to have that combo and I thought it tasted great!! Good, standard dinsum for the price! the egg tarts in particular stood out to me, they're quite good here compared to other places I've had them at. They give an assortment of sauces for dishes, but strangely, soy sauce was left out. The scallion pancake was more a bao and not crispy but the taste was still good. The veggies were fine and everything else was okay. Nothing special stood out. Just had dim sum tonight and helz yes! The ambience is classic dim sum place - big chandeliers, carpet, gift-wrapped chairs, and kind of crappy bathrooms. We got hot tea which could have been a little hotter. Siu mai were big and delicious. I love sui mai. short ribs were great, a little fatty as ribs often are, soup dumplings were also huge and delicious, plenty hot on the inside, pan fried bun was great, never had that before. We've always loved coming here cause it's spacious and got plenty of window tables so you can overlook Chinatown and the beautiful day. Dim sum means tapas style of variety Chinese dishes which you share with your family and friends. The potstickers were huge and tasty! They were full of flavor and JUICY!!! We also ordered the Mongolia beef, orange chicken, chicken fried rice, beef fun chow noodles and the lo mein noodles. I would recommend trying other dishes depending on what you like best. The food I had was fresh and tasty, a 4/5 overall for me. The food is a bit pricey for Chicago: $7 for beef shank, $7 for chicken feet, $4 for the soup, and $2 charged for tea. This place is open 10am - 3pm and 5pm - 9pm. I went on a Tuesday evening and there was no crowd at all. The service was alright, and servers speak both English and Cantonese. The location was clean and comfortable to dine-in. I have been coming to phoenix for over 2 decades and through their different owners. This is still my go to spot in the city for dim sum despite a lot of competition. This has even been my go to spot on Christmas and Christmas Eve. Despite cooks and owners changing the quality has remained top notch! This is authentic food and incredible dim sum. They used to do the carts back in the day and no longer do it. While the menu has slimmed down over the years it makes sense only to offer the most popular items. As with all Chinatown restos, parking is a challenge so be prepared. Pricing has remained very reasonable over the years too. read more

If you are looking for cheap food to feed a lot of people, Phoenix is perfect for that. The dim sum is pretty good, and great for the price.

Ordering dim sum by checking off the menu on piece of paper, handing to staff, and waiting for them to bring out the dishes. Service was not bad and food came fairly quick. The restaurant is located on the second floor and feels like your standard dim-sum spot / Chinese restaurant with the decor. We had people in our group that were vegetarian / couldn't eat red-meat but managed to order a good amount of dishes so while not the most vegetarian-friendly, it did have some good options. We ordered a ton of dim sum staples and all felt fairly standard so not disappointed with most dishes. The only ones I felt a little let down with were the scallion pancakes and the soup dumplings. The scallion pancakes were more like oily bao buns rather than the thin crispy pancakes I expected; it was just really dense and lacking in any flavor aside from oil. The soup dumplings were super meat packed and lacked any actual soup; the flavor itself felt lacking and the ginger flavor both took over and tasted off. But overall, I enjoyed everything else I ordered and reminded me of childhood eating Dim Sum. For approximately 5 adults, we spent about $140 so decently priced. Not sure I would come back and how it stacks against other establishments in Chinatown as I am not from Chicago, but was a decent experience. read more
