Walnut Shrimp
Bao L.

Cai validate for the parking lot under the train station so parking was simple on a Sunday evening. The place was fairly empty and we were able to get a table quickly. We got a table with a lazy susan, which will be easier to share a lot of food. They brought us the Chrysanthemum tea pretty quickly, but it took them a while to bring us menus. They brought over 2 menus for 5 of us to share which took longer to place the order. Some of the more expensive items are pricier then at other restaurants. Portion tends to be a little bigger. The more common dishes like rick, noodles, veggies, etc. are fairly priced. The chicken corn soup was pretty big. The Ginger and Onion Flavored Chicken was more expensive then at most restaurants and was a little too raw. Pea Tips in a Light Broth was just right. They kept it simple for this dish which is expected to be light. I liked their Walnut Shrimp a lot. The prawns were large. They spent time on removing the walnut skin to remove the bitter taste and just candied the walnut, which is why it was so crunchy. Kids liked the Salt and Pepper Egg Tofu. The Braised Fish Fillet Casserole was a good value, but a little too greasy. They still serve some dim sums during dinner hours which was a surprise and I might try it next time if I want something light.

There were a few small two tops, but mostly those big round family size tables with the giant center lazy susans. Got a paper menu for dim sum items and a regular menu. Had to go with the dim sum goodies since it had so many things we'd never seen in any Michigan Chinese restaurants. Sweet walnut buns, fried bean curd skins filled with deliciousness, brisket with rice noodles that looked like Korean rice cakes, meatloaf, and more. Everything was outstanding, with various sauces presented with different items. This was new for us as well. A deep red vinegar with some fried dumplings, a tasty black sauce with the fried stuffed bean curd skins, a sweet plum sauce with the fried skinny shrimp rolls, it was really fun food. They have a barista making coffee, espresso and even milk tea, but the wait was like 10 minutes. Clean restaurant with very good service. Wish we lived closer so we could make it regular stop.

I ate a little bit of dim sum, general tso's chicken, fried rice, green beans, shumai, and more. All items were solid. However, nothing was extraordinarily excellent, so this place is wonderful for large groups or small groups. Food and service is always speedy.

The restaurant was packed -- every seat full -- which is always a good sign. We were seated by the window, which made for a great dining spot. The restaurant was lively with large and small groups of people. The wait staff was attentive and efficient, quickly clearing tables and responding to any requests. The food was excellent. We ordered noodles, rice, hot sour soup and dumplings. One thing to note: portions are served family-style and are large enough to share. We originally thought we were each ordering individual plates, but everything came out perfect for the table. No complaints though -- we all left with leftovers, and honestly, it tasted just as good the next day warmed up! I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was perfectly made. The appetizers were a bit on the smaller side but very flavorful -- you may want to order more than one for the table. The only downside had nothing to do with the restaurant itself -- parking in Chinatown can be a challenge. However, if you dine at a participating restaurant, you can get your parking validated for $3, which definitely helps. Overall, it was a great experience, and we would definitely return.

While the service is lovely, you should expect less western style service. They are efficient and get you quality dishes at great prices, but they may come in an unexpected order. The older clientele to this place are loyal and for good reason. I would recommend you experiment with the menu! Try a few classics like the shrimp dumplings or mango pudding and get a few new items like the taro cake or the chicken feet.

They serve all day dim sum but decided to go with family style. It was Valentine's Day late evening and the dishes we wanted to order (Peking Duck and Roast Pig) were sold out. So we ordered another dish and they asked if they can substitute an ingredient because they were out of it. They served a large bowl of rice to share instead of individual bowls. Portions were decent but all our dishes were delicious! Service was friendly and attentive. Parking is available at Chinatown Parking by the Metro and they can validate your parking ticket for the discount. Will have to come back one day to try dim sum.
