Portugese egg tarts
Mel J.

We passed by this bakery while walking around Chinatown around 6pm. There were so many people inside and the buns on display looked so good so we decided to buy some. Some of the items were sold out since it was quite late but there were still decent selections of baked goods. - Portugese egg tart: I like the flaky crust but I wish that the egg custard was creamier. - BBQ pork bun: the bun was okay but a bit dry. The BBQ filling was good. - Melon pan with egg custard: the bun was good and soft. The egg custard was creamy and just enough sweetness.

Traditional Chinese bakery located in Chinatown, Chicago. Chiu Quon Bakery is a favorite fir both locals abd visitors. From the moment you walk in, you'll find trays filled with baked buns, pastries and all the traditional Chinese treats. The pork buns were really soft, fluffy and filled with savory filling. The shop is small and has a busy atmosphere but the line moves quickly. Everything felt authentic, prices were reasonable and a must stop if you are visiting Chinatown, Chicago.

One of the best bakeries in Chicago's Chinatown. And it shows as there's a line of patrons both local and visiting like I was. Service is quick as you wait in line, there's about 3 people working with each individually attending to the customers one by one as you may order from the bakery case. Every item seems fresh and taste fresh. Other classic prepackage pastries and dishes are also available. A line of cakes are also displayed to be ordered in advance or for a slice to eat! Inside is spacious with display cases on both sides but with a crowd and a single line to order, it can get full easily. We tried the pork bao bun and it tasted great. The flavor is amazing and lots of filling which is a plus. The egg custard is good as well with the tart flaky and perfect

This is a take out style bakery. I got the Shumai, Steamed Rice Crepe w/ Shrimp, and Pork Sung Bun. Shumai and Steamed Rice Crepe were really good, and I recommend ordered from their Dim Sum Menu. The Pork Sung Bun was okay. I was expecting more Pork Sung filling , but it was more bread than filling. Service is to the point. Strictly business and reserved. NOTE: BRING CASH! They only take cash. There is no seating area, but a small standing area to eat. Nice place to give a try.

There was a line out the door, but it moved very quickly. The buns are filled generously and packed with flavor. The bread is super soft and fresh. There are a plethora of options to choose from. Definitely a must visit!

This is the best bakery in Southside Chinatown, without a doubt, the line just never stops like they're handing free food but they're not. Although the prices are very reasonable, you could come here everyday...BTW, make sure to bring cash as it's cash only. I really love coming here after a meal because the buns are soft, light, airy, and sweet. Thus far, my favorites are: - egg custard topping with a red bean filling and - the coconut bun with whipped creme Wow, those are really good but do try their other offerings and determine your own favorite item. I have to try their Argyle location to see if they're consistently great!! Oh, one more thing, there is a ledge by the window where you can eat quickly whilst standing up but it can get very crowded in there. Xie xie Chiu Quon!!

This is a bakery in Chinatown. When we visit in the evening, most of the bake goods sold out. We got some of the bakery good for next day breakfast. The store is popular even at closing time. The bake goods are very delicious for the next day. Price is reasonable. The clerk is helpful.

Terrible service. I picked out two pastries but didn't realize the store was cash-only. When I went to pay, the woman told me, "Cash only." I explained that I didn't have cash but could go get some, and she simply waved me away. What made the interaction especially frustrating was that there was an ATM directly behind me inside the store, yet she made no effort to mention it. Her attitude became noticeably rude and dismissive the moment she realized I didn't have cash.

This cash-only bakery is the oldest bakery in Chicago Chinatown. I stopped by while in Chinatown and got a two pork buns and a Portuguese egg tart. They ran out of their pineapple pork buns but the ones I got were pretty good. The dough is soft and the filling was a good proportion to the size of the bun. The egg tart was light and custardy, the texture where it melts in your mouth. Service was quick since the pastries are ready made. There was a line but I didn't wait long at all (10-15 min). Heads up it seems like tours tend to bring people into the store to talk about the history. There is only one counter by the window if you are wanting to enjoy your items inside, this is more of an on the go stop.

Keep in mind this place is cash only. We stopped in around 7:30 PM looking for a sweet treat and picked the mango mousse cake, green tea mousse cake, and a winter melon baby mooncake. Unfortunately, none of them hit the mark for us. My son took one bite of the green tea cake and immediately spit it out. Given that these were the few cake options left near closing, it makes sense now why they were still available. The winter melon mooncake was a first for me, but definitely not something I'd recommend.

Was not aware this was the oldest bakery in Chinatown, but it makes sense cuz my parents were taking my siblings and me there at least 25yrs ago. I never knew the name of the bakery, but I always knew what it looked like, so after several years, when my friend and I decided to go to Chinatown the other day, I was heartbroken not to see the bakery in its usual spot. We happened upon another bakery just a bit further down, and the sponge cakes looked EXACTLY the way I remembered as a kid. That's when I thought maybe this was the same bakery. Thank goodness for Yelp and old photos because it WAS! I'm so so happy the bakery is around and continues to do well! And that, as an adult, I now finally know the name! I don't think you can go wrong with anything you get here, but my personal faves are the sponge cake and BBQ pork bun. Prices are fair, the employees are quick, the place is clean and bright, and the goods are great. I don't normally carry cash, but thank god I had some on me that day cuz note: it is CASH ONLY. I'm grateful to Chiu Quon bakery for the nostalgia and family memories the flavors of the baked goods brings back, and I'm happy to be able to report back to my parents that the bakery still exists! I'll be back for sure!

This is our usual go-to for Cantonese baked goods. To name a few items: 1) Hot dog bun 2) Barbecue pork bun 3) Pineapple bun 4) Custard bun 5) Steamed white sugar cake 6) Paper-wrapped sponge cake 7) Wife cake 8) Egg tarts 9) Portuguese egg tarts 10) Lotus seed pastry We would also occasionally purchase the freezer goods such as steamed barbecue pork buns and custard buns to steam at home with dim sum to have a quick lunch without having to drive from the suburbs to Chinatown.

Mixed fruit cake as of July 2026: $40

The Taiwanese pastries are amazing but the cakes are one of a kind! OBSESSED with their honeydew cake! Yes! Chiffon with layers of honeydew, it was sold out but I got the mixed fruit and it was strawbs, grapes , honeydew and cantaloupe! As an Asian auntie, I can definitely say: IT IS NOT TOO SWEET! 4 stars cos they still don't take CC and the poor newbies kept lining up with no paper cash even though it says "Cash Only" at the door.

Ask the Community - Chiu Quon Bakery & Dim Sum

How early do you have to get there to get a bbq pork bun?

I was there around 4pm on a Saturday and was able to get one.

Do they sell coconut buns?

Yes.

Are the buns cooked with lard?

Yes, lard is used as an ingredient in the bakery for some of the buns.

Has anyone tried their cakes? The strawberry flavor one? Looking to order a cake for a graduation in Chicago but I am ordering from out of state!…

Overall, I'd say their cakes are quite good. I've ordered a couple of times (mixed fruit filling) for birthdays and graduation. The cakes are this really fluffy angel cakes with fruit and icing filling. The icing is really airy and not overly sweet.…

Do they offer any vegan options at Chiu Quon Bakery?

Honestly? Probably not. I have a shrimp allergy and it's hard enough to do that - much less find anything truly vegetarian. Vegan is another step harder. They mean we'll, but I'd be cautious of even any sincere vegan offerings.

Establishment - open space for the dining area that has a decent number of booth seating (for up to 8-10 people, not your typical 4) and tables that can open to huge circle tables for large gatherings with a massive lazy Susan in the center. There's even private party rooms towards the back. The place overall is pretty clean. Bar is quite bright with a solid selection, and there's TV screens on two of the walls. Kind of random, but doesn't bother me. Beware of parking though. It's not labeled but it is a one way lot wedged between Archer and Cermak - enter from the cermak side! Service - everyone who works here is so friendly, professional, and quick. One woman I think has been there since the inception of the restaurant it feels like and she's always on top of everything. Food - amazing. I can always rely on the taste and quality of the food here. Their dim sum is a bit underrated and I think better than Min Hin (flavor, quantity, and quality wise). The full menu is where it's at though. My family and I always go for the French style beef, sautéed pea tips with garlic, and preserved egg with pork congee. We've gotten their lamb chops before too which was cooked to perfection and the meat was tender and never chewy. Truly just an all around fantastic restaurant, whether you want a family style sit down meal or dim sum (served all day btw!!).

Stepping past the majestic ancient Chinese warrior statues at the entrance, one is instantly transported. The interior design is nothing short of breathtaking artfully adorned with authentic Chinese furnishings, lotus-shaped lighting, a striking Bruce Lee figure, and an exclusive private bar area. The entire establishment is impeccably pristine and spotlessly clean throughout. The hospitality was top-tier from start to finish. Upon signaling a staff member, we were attended to within moments a level of prompt, polished, and efficient service that I deeply appreciate. I was particularly enamored with their exquisite chinaware; the traditional teapots and matching tea cups bring such a refined, thoughtful touch to the table. For my main course, I selected the Shanghai-style soup dumplings. When served alongside our freshly steeped tea, they proved to be an absolute culinary triumph delicate, bursting with rich, aromatic broth, and executed with remarkable precision. Between the immaculate environment, enchanting ambiance, sublime cuisine, and flawless service, this establishment earns full marks from me. A thoroughly marvelous experience I shall most certainly be returning

Be prepared to wait a little bit for a table, or share a big one with another party at peak times. Prices are reasonable and portions are pretty generous. ===== Kind of lost count of how many times I've been. Love getting the dim sum and noodle dishes here. Some favorites: beef cheong fun with egg, siu mai, Singapore noodle, xo rice noodle rolls, spare ribs, pork and century egg congee. All the food has been very solid. Inside is always bustling and can be a bit crowded. Service is pretty friendly as far as Chinatown goes, and very efficient. There's a guy who works there who I think is the manager or something, because he puts in 200x effort and is always hustling. When he's not around it feels like something is missing. Prices are very reasonable and we like ordering a lot here so that we have tasty leftovers for later. This place has quite a few big tables and is good for large groups. My only nits are that very occasionally a dish or teacup will have a dirty spot, and that the bubble tea here is kind of meh. I don't remember exactly which one I ordered, but it was a little watery and lacking in flavor. It's also probably tough since they're boxed in by boba places now. Pro tip: When you first get your table, they'll ask you what kind of tea you want. If you ignore them or don't know how to answer, the default is green tea. Another one is to come at off-peak times. Not only will you get a table faster, but I think they tweak their portion sizes depending on how crowded it is. Definitely will be back! And I recommend you visit too

Everything tasted solid, though admittedly, I was a bit too focused on the conversation with my table to really pay close attention to the food Only thing I wasn't a fan of was I felt like they essentially pushed tea on our table and charged us for it. A few other people at my table ended up desiring tea anyway, so they drank some, and as a result we were charged for it, which I'm fine with that because we consumed the product, but they charged per cup - so they assumed that the entire party drank tea, but in reality only part of the table drank tea. And even then, before I knew anyone at my table wanted tea, I told the waiters that we're good with just water, so they took away the tea cups. But then sometime later someone placed a tea pot on our table anyway... I had a feeling they were going to pull this move because I've seen it happen at other places, but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it in front of the rest of my party. I just thought to vocalize it because I don't think it's great practice. They offer a QR code to scan for discounted parking that applies to the parking lots.
