The expression, "hole in the wall" is very much overused in YELP reviews. This inappropriately named take out place is the archetype, the Weberian ideal type, model example of a true hole in the wall restaurant. If you're the sort of intrepid YELPer who has learned that the best Chinese restaurants are filled with Chinese (NOT Asian looking, actual Chinese of any Chinese ethnic group) customers and get low marks from non-Chinese customers for service, then this is your place. The only customers here are Chinatown residents. There are tables for dine in, but you still get the food in Styrofoam take out containers. I've been tempted to bring in my own bowls. They've been serving up some excellent Chinese barbecue since at least the 1980s, and the prices are better than the rest of the area. Its become easier to order now that they have an order touch screen in English, but that also takes away some of the adventure. The vegetables are excellent, and a speciality is the salt and pepper chopped pork. Most dishes are served on rice, and they are pretty generous with the rice so when it's just me and the Chief of Staff we get two entrees with rice and one without and that's too much food. But you know, when you're eating Chinese, you don't ever want to worry about taking the very last morsel. Don't be afraid of what this place looks like if you like Chinese barbecue. I do wish they could return to the paper and cardboard containers they used to use though.

This place has been in Chinatown forever and it's still my favorite for salted pepper pork chop over rice! I've tried ordering it from other restaurants, but they never hit the spot like this. It's not new or modern, so folks looking for a trendy Chinese restaurant won't find their IG-worthy post here. BUT you will find good food, quick service, and a good bang for your buck. It's small, but there is some seating available indoors. What I get: Salt and Pepper Pork Chop over Rice - It's like the perfect little crispy bite that gives way to juicy tenderness inside. And with thinly sliced jalapeños, there's just a hint of a kick to add that extra addictive flavor. Portion is huge. For $8 it's so good. It used to come with a soup too, but that was probably years and years ago now.

My goodness, you can't do fried chicken like this. Just do yourself a solid and order yourself as many as you can. Unless you have no tastebuds, you'll thank me later. The crispy, delicious skin. The juicy meat. You won't be thinking about anything else. Yes, there's some other food on the menu that's okay, but nothing holds a candle to this fried chicken. Gourmet has all the typical rice boxes that many a person has grown to love for the value. It's a bit of a hole in the wall. It's not trying to be anything more. Thank you for embracing that. You'll find Gourmet off Wentworth, the main stretch of Chinatown. Worth a try, especially, ESPECIALLY for the fried chicken wings.

Baked Portuguese pork chop rice

I've been sporadically coming to Gourmet all throughout my childhood and adulthood. They really haven't changed much. They're still that hole in the wall with a few sticky tables for anybody who doesn't mind the super authentic experience and a huge variety of items on their menu. Instead of downsizing and specializing in a few items, I think they've actually added to the long list over the years. Some items would really take you by surprise though, and it's in a good way. Some of my recurring to-order items are their rice boxes, chow mein, and baked Portuguese rice. They have yet to disappoint and they are very reliable if you want to order and have lunch by 11am. Most places aren't even ready to serve food by 11am.

Shrimp Crepe

Very cool hole in the wall. The shrimp crepe was incredible. I will definitely be back to try a couple of other things. The menu is huge!

Gourmet Chinese food is located @ 210 W 23rd Street. My wife's co-worker brings in food from this restaurant sometimes so we thought we would check it out. Gourmet Food is located just west of Wentworth on the north side of the street. It's a funky little restaurant reminiscent of Sun Wah when they use to be located on Argyle before moving to their new space on Broadway. As you enter there is an enclosure where pieces of pork chashu hang along with a cooked duck. The restaurant is not much to look at in fact it's kind of a dump. They have a very large menu with a large variety of items to select from. Everything from vegetable to chicken, to pork, to beef to seafood dishes @ unbelievably low prices. We ordered 3 dishes salt & spicy smelt $5.75, mar-por tofu $5.00 & Mongolian Beef $5.75. Like I said low prices. We ordered sat down and waited. This is definitely off the beaten path. It's more of a local joint with all Chinese people eating there (go figure a Chinese restaurant with Chinese people lol). While we were waiting there was one Chinese woman who was standing by her table with half eaten containers of food that seemed a little distraught babbling in Chinese & continuously striking the table with a rolled up piece of paper. My wife and I just looked at her. It's a good thing she was on the other side of the restaurant and there was a row of table separating us from Little Ms Chinese whack job. When our food was done the owner/cashier called me up to the counter to pick up our 3 containers of food. I was surprised at the weight of the containers and decided to eat there. It was such an elegant ambiance with our styrofoam containers, plastic forks on dirty table with hot sauce in open containers sitting on the table. The attention to detail was amazing (well whatta you want for $5.00-$5.75?). As it turns out the bottom of all 3 containers were loaded with rice with the entrees on top (no wonder they were so heavy). That being said the food wasn't anything to write home about. The smelt was ok, but it was bland as was the tofu. The Mongolian Beef was served over rice not noodles. Once again it was just ok. That being said they do have a huge menu and the prices are very reasonable. I would be willing to go back and try some of the other items, just don't expect Golden Bull 242 W Cermak or Homestyle (3205 S. Halsted) quality food. They get and additional star bumping them up to 3 for the following reasons. Price, quantity of food and the huge menu selection.

Tofu Pudding
L L.

This place use to be my go to place to get tofu pudding but after this time I won't be going back. They just served me this unfinished tofu pudding what a joke.

Gourmet has been around since I was toddler. I remember times with my parents and grandparents and have photos there. I use to go a lot during high school because it was cheap eats. Lately, I have been going every week for 3 years to have easy to make school lunches for my kids and myself for work. I mix it up each week so we all wouldn't get sick of it. For the price, gourmet offers great food.

We waited like 5 minutes for a table but were seated at a small two person booth/table. Our server was pretty busy but attentive and knew a lot about the menu. We ordered the wedge salad and the yellowtail sushi roll. It was spicy and had a nice touch of yuzu on top and the fish was relatively fresh. The wedge salad had plenty of dressing on it and it was pretty good. For the main we got the Chilean sea bass which was very sweet and savory. The scallops had a perfect sear and they were pretty very rich and buttery. The broccolini was steamed and fresh. He finished off dinner with the crème brûlée and the Keylime pie, both of us we had to take home because we were so full. I think overall this experience is pleasant, not something very memorable, but I'm happy I've came here!

My favorites were the crab cake, Cobb salad, and short rib. The crab cake was very soft and had a nice texture to it. It was one of the best crab cakes I've eaten. The Cobb salad was also very light and shareable. The short rib main course was very tender, and it came with crispy potatoes as well. Some of the other items such as the Philly cheesesteak and Asian tacos were just ok. They were also both very small in quantity relative to their price. The desserts were magnificent as well, especially the deconstructed key lime pie and sticky toffee pudding. Both of them were phenomenal. The service throughout my meal was excellent. My waitress gave us some nice recommendations, and the staff came by often. I would definitely recommend to visit Bar Mar, and I look forward to coming back myself when I am in Chicago.

We really admire Jose's philanthropic work and want to love his restaurants but truth be told, if you forget about the glitzy decor, the food is just average. We tried several appetizers; the Hamachi Cone, Caviar Cone, Asian Taco, Neptune's Pillows, Shrimp Cocktail and Iberico Jamon. We also shared a bottle of Cava. Everything was fine but to be frank the Shrimp Cocktail was the best thing we ate, simple and perfectly fresh. The service was pushy, when a server wants to take you order less than 3 minutes after sitting down, it feels like you're on a conveyor belt. We felt the prices were way out of line, with tip I spent almost $500 for a bottle of cava and appetizers for two people, for that, the food should have been more memorable. We spent the same amount for two off us to have the 12 course tasting menu at Atsumeru a couple of weeks ago and Bar Mar's food isn't in the same league. We will continue to financially support Jose's World Kitchen but not his restaurants.

While I wasn't a big fan of the taste of my drink and dessert, my friend enjoyed both of theirs. Rather, the service was excellent and the views were amazing. My friend ordered The Rocher for dessert, which includes hazelnut cake, mascarpone chantilly, and smoked maldon salt. I ordered a Baked Alaska, consisting of citrus cake, lemon cream, toasted meringue, and salted white chocolate crunch. We both also ordered cocktails. I cannot recall the name of the drinks. I asked for my drink to be fruity and sweet, but it wasn't enough of either for me. The Baked Alaska was fine but too much of various flavors. I wouldn't fault the restaurant for the drink or dessert taste as I know others really enjoyed theirs. Our server was most attentive and very helpful. We found that making a reservation on Open Table only offered a certain number of time slots, and all of them involved having dinner and not just drinks or a dessert. Reservations can also be made on their website though we chose to speak to the front desk about a reservation. Going up to the bar is first come, first serve though. We ended up making an Open Table reservation and were told it was okay to only order drinks and desserts. Cindy's is named in honor of Marian "Cindy" Pritzker, a beloved Chicago philanthropist.
