    Beef Noodle Soup

Chengdu Bistro's scallion pancakes are soooo good. I was skeptical at first because nothing can ever compare to my mom's. But THESE ATE DOWN. I also ordered the beef noodle soup which was perfect for the chilly weather. Service was a little slow and we waited for our check for a long time. Either way, we'd go back for sure. -AD

I got the fu qi fei pian, the century egg salad, and the sichuan zajiang noodles. The noodles were a texture that I was not used to. They were harder than al dente which I didn't mind but would prefer them to be chewier. It was covered in the zajiang sauce and the photo does not do it justice because there was more sauce under the noodles. The sauce was amazing and flavorful so much so that I asked for a to go container just for the leftover sauce LOL. The fu qi fei pian was good just as I expected it. The century egg is what made me take off the last star. The egg just tasted old kind of like when you freeze something and defrost it a couple times. The sauce was not the best either. Service was okay just be ready to flag someone down. It is a cool spot and I am interested in trying other things.

I'm so glad that printers row is getting more local restaurants in the area!! I've eaten here a couple times now (both dine-in and takeout) and do think it will become a staple in my restaurant rotation. They have a variety of different dumplings which are excellent (and you get them anyway you like: steamed, boiled, fried etc). I also really enjoyed the dry chilli chicken. I'm also a huge spice lover, however I will say some dishes have too much sichuan pepper (ie the spicy beef noodle soup) to the point I couldn't really eat it after a certain point due to the tingly/numbing sensation.

The pick this week was Chengdu Bistro in Bucktown. We wanted to start with chicken and cabbage dumplings, but they came last. Nice order of 8, but they were just bland. Really needed some kind of spice. Donna ordered sweet spicy noodles, I got Sichuan Zajiang noodles with stewed peas. While tasty, hers was not very spicy, not even for me. My dish was milder, but didn't look anything like the picture on the menu. Not much of the pork or the peas. The noodles were made in house and pretty good. All in all, 3 stars and no rush to return.

Visited this gem in wicker park with a dear friend for the first time today and my tastebuds and tummy are still dancing! We both ordered all the veggie options on the menu and each of them were absolutely delicious!!! Everything came out of the kitchen so quickly! Fresh, hot and flavorful! The mushroom bao had a unique flavor, dense and satisfying. The veggie dumplings (we got them pan fried) were delightful mouthfuls of yummy veggies served with a flavorful soy sauce. My favorite dish and the show stopper for me were the sweet spicy noodles!!! The sauce on these noodles was such a treat you'll want to put it on everything! I can't remember the name of the noodles my friend had but they were delicious too! The interior of this place is also very charming and welcoming. A nice place for a lunch catch up with friends, or dinner spot, and it's the kind of place that doesn't seem like it would get so loud you have to yell across the table to hear each other. Shouts out to the gentleman who was our server too, he was very kind and attentive, and gave us space to enjoy while ensuring we had what we needed. Great service!

Nothing I say here will do this place justice. Handmade noodles. Handmade dumplings. Incredible staff. I've been to tons of Chinese places around the city, and I can honestly say this is the BEST I have had. Cheers. Stop reading this and go.

Tried Chengdu Bistro during a private event so I can't directly comment on typical service, but the staff were kind and we had a lovely time. There was a set menu for the lunch event and we got to try menu more dishes than if I can't with just my partner. Sometimes not having to make any decisions is such a welcomed break. The dumplings that we had were delicious. Not too spicy but had nice flavor. I enjoyed making the garlic cucumber salad for a bright bite in-between more "yeet hai" spicy/savory bites. Friends were also raving about a bottled cold tea drink that was on their menu. I didn't get a chance to try but might add it to our next out order from here!

On a cold wintery night this is the place to come get your grub on. The chef creates delicious Chengdu inspired comfort food. From the homemade Dan Dan noodles to the truffle dumplings & every soup dumpling imaginable. Every dish tasted greater than the one before! Definitely ask for Eric or Noah both were knowledgeable in all that they offered and had spot on recommendations that will keep you coming for more! We were celebrating a birthday and serendipitously the chef made warm rice cakes topped with crunchy peanuts and carmelized brown sugar that they brought to the table!!! Such a sweet gesture that made one feel very special on their birthday!!! All in all a really great place to try in a bustling Chicago neighborhood!!! Come hungry and leave deliriously happy!!! Expect wowed tastes buds and food coma!!!

Yummy spicy szhechuan beef noodle soup! Good on a cold day. Good service. The numbing spice noodles were crazy (numbness overpowers the flavor a bit). Chill vibes.

Small nice restaurant with great staff and food. We tried the fried dumplings. They were really tasty and flavorful. Lots of pork meat in it too. The wood ear salad was ok. The texture was chewy and the taste was ok. It wasn't for me, but others may love it. The Beef Noodle soup was delicious. They give a nice portion of beef and the broth was so full of flavors. Loved it! For desert we had the Glutinous rice cakes. It's very sweet and tasty, nice little crunch and kind of chewy, but very tasty. Nice compliment to the food. I would recommend this place. It was really good.

A truly pleasant lunch experience. Impressed by the absolutely friendly and considerate people, bright and clean environment, and pretty authentic flavors! We got Yibin Spicy Noodles, Pork and Truffle Soup Dumplings (I mean the truffle is not in a traditional recipe but the flavor it adds ), Dan Dan Noodles, Beef Noodle Soup and Dried Chili Chicken. Everything tasted good! If you have never tried Szechuan Noodles or just simply miss the flavors from home, you should get noodle dishes here.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get the Peking duck. To the owner of this establishment: I would implore you to take this off the menu immediately. It does not fit the rest of your offerings; you do not make it anywhere near to an edible quality and it shouldn't be on the menu. The duck tasted like it had been sitting out for days. The pancake wrap tasted like they were just microwaved. Even the cucumbers and scallions did not taste very fresh. On a more positive note: The noodles and dumplings were passable and just slightly above average but very worth it due to the cheap price.

We ordered like the PERFECT amount of food and best variety. Roast duck: I honestly don't know if I've ever had duck before, but I'm a duck believer now. The skin on theirs was the perfect crispy shatter texture and the duck was sooooo juicy! I don't know why I was always so worried about it being gamey. They give you fluffy steamed bao buns, a sauce, and scallions on the side as well as duck fried rice! Turnip cake: Obviously a must any time I come to dim sum. I've never seen turnip in any other form than this. Japanese salt & pepper tofu: My FAVORITE dish ever. Any fried salt & pepper tofu always makes me happy. They use a creamy egg-like tofu and the outside is lightly crispy with amazing aromatics stir fried in. Steamed white rice on the side is perfect with this. Loved everything else my dinner buds picked and we were super full by the end! Service was good and food came out fast and scorching hot! ***Parking in the area is treacherous (not the restaurants fault, but reconsider driving if possible bc cell signal can be zero to none around the garages if you get lucky) ***Their website allows you to request a reservation as long as it's 3 hours before your desired time. We came on a Saturday evening around dinner time and there was plenty of room for us to get a table immediately as walk-ins!

I went with someone who knows the city well, and they recommended the duck fried rice. I had never tried it before, and it was absolutely delicious so flavorful and satisfying. This is a tough one. Not happy at all. With all of the wonderful legendary Chinese places closing…read moreover the past few years (Kow Kow, Hong Min, Pekin House, and even the best egg rolls at Mee Mah), Sun Wah has been solid over the years- their whole duck is legendary and incredible. BUT, as wonderful as the food is, the last 5 visits have been dreadful. The angry waitresses are part of the deal, but when we're spending a few hundred bucks on dinner, enough is enough. Asking for extra sauce and being told NO- asking for extra bao wrappers and being told NO, asking for extra daikon for the duck when we're given a half full dish in the first place in unacceptable. And like I said, that's part of the deal. And the food is so good that you put up with it. But what happened last week was the last straw. We ordered egg rolls, 2 large dumpling soups, pot stickers, a whole duck, medium ribs, sweet and sour chicken, and for an appetizer, a medium BBQ pork. When the server brought the pork, first, it was cold. I guess that's also the deal. Sometimes it's hot, sometimes totally cold. But this time, and I'm not exaggerating, more than half of the order was pure white fat. Not fatty pork, white solid fat. we tried chewing git to see if there was any meat, but no. So, I finally got the servers attention and showed her. She looked at it, and then walked away. I assumed she was going to bring us a new order. Instead, the owner walked over. I showed her the 2 plates- 1 plate with half of the solid white fat, and the other plate with chewed up fat pieces. Instead of apologizing and bringing over a new order, she said "sometimes the pigs we get are very fatty". So I replied something like "sure I get that, but you can't serve this to customers" and " can you please bring us a new order of actual pork and not just a plate of fat"??? and she then looks down at both plates and says "you already ate it so we can't do anything. I tell her that, no, I didn't eat anything- you can see a plate with chewed up and spit out fat, but she literally WALKS AWAY. So then of course we wait for her to bring a new order over, but that never happens. And we're loyal customers for many many years, and she knows us. This extreme lack of care for your longtime customers is nauseating. Like I said, we've put up with it for years because we love the food (as well as putting up with the many health code violations over the years), but after this huge fuck you from the owner over a few bucks worth of pork? We're done. And our friends are done. This rude pathetic refusal to admit that you're serving inedible food and take care of your loyal customers with a few dollars in pork will now cost you THOUSANDS of dollars every year, because we have now told 20 of our friends to stop going, and they all agreed with us. Bad move Momma SunWah..........

A few dishes, like the Duck Fried Rice, Pork Belly, and Beef Noodle Soup, were actually pretty solid. But the rest of the night was just so frustrating that I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The Jiaozi were the first big letdown. The menu said they were beef short rib and bone marrow, but they didn't taste like that at all. The filling was just super mushy and the flavor was just weird. The manager and the food runner were nice when we mentioned it, but our actual server was a disaster. When we tried the Goat Noodles, all we could taste was cumin. It was so overwhelming that it covered up everything else. We couldn't even tell if there was actually any goat shoulder in there. When we told our waiter, she couldn't care less. She got totally defensive, wouldn't even listen to us, and just said, "Oh, I told you when you ordered that the dish is cumin forward" and walked away. It got worse when the bill came. She was holding on to the payment machine so hard and almost yanked it right out of my friend's hand. She was staring at it to see what we were tipping. It was so awkward and incredibly rude. No thank you, no nothing. She just grabbed it and left. The place has potential, but they really need to fix the food and retrain the staff. A cool vibe doesn't make up for bad food and awful service.
