We ordered a bunch of things from Chengdu because my friend was in town and he used to love this restaurant when he lived in Chicago. The portions are decently sized. The food was overall flavorful and tasty but the food was definitely on the oilier side. They are better with non vegetarian options than vegetarian options but the Shanghai spring rolls were decent and the fried noodles with veggies were decent too. The food wasn't super great but it was relatively inexpensive so the price is justified. I didn't dine in so I cannot comment on the ambience or the service. read more

Once again a great experience. Tried their pork feet this time. Super flavorful, mostly bone but still tasty. The mala tang was also great, not sure why it needed to be in a giant salad bowl but it was easy to eat and they had the option of duck blood which I love. The crispy eggplant was piping hot and had a melt in your mouth interior. The newest update is the Ciba now has a brown sugar filling! I was pleasantly surprised. It was still not too sweet. A lovely friend who lives on a completely different continent told me about Chengdu and I looked it up and the closest one was in Chicago but I live in Minneapolis! The interior is cute! We dined in - ordered and paid on our phone. Staff was quick in bringing out dishes and taking away dirty dishes. We did have to wait a while when trying to get their attention for boxes to pack up leftovers. Dumplings were good - the Xiao Long Bao was guaranteed the perfect soup dumpling. There's a bit of planning you must perform on your part when dining-in. For example, if throwing in multiple orders between different categories ie apps and or mains. The kitchen or your waiter isn't going to time those. It all comes out, when it comes out. At times, your mains & rice/ noodles will hit before the appetizers do. TLDR: I rarely ever leave reviews for places I DoorDash but Chengu was SO impressive (no pun intended), that I had to leave a review. We are visiting from NY and hopes for good Chinese takeout was low. On a Sunday night, 15 minutes before closing we ordered a ton of things including: zhong's dumplings, crab Rangoon, general tso's chicken, duck fried rice and scallion pancakes. Chengdu delivered - and honestly some of the dishes here were better than any I've had in NY, including the dumplings (which were served IN sauce I've never seen that before but they were AMAZING, the sauce was so good and these dumplings might be the best I've had...), the crab Rangoon (which though didn't come with sauce, was so flavorful- the filling was almost sweet AND savory and made a killer combo... these were a 10/10 and I remembered why the Midwest has the best crab Rangoon), the fried rice (perfect, big portion, perfectly cooked duck, greasy but DELICIOUS). I'm not exaggerating we gobbled every single thing up and I was really impressed by how good, flavorful and well made every dish was. Chengdu Impression is one of my favorite spots for Chinese takeout in Wicker Park! My favorite dish that I get every time is the Sichuan Cold Noodles Salad (under cold appetizers). For $9 they give a ton of flavorful noodles that can be eaten hot or cold! The cold spiciness is a very unique combination and the texture of the noodles are always perfect. Today I also got the salty and pepper shrimp, I was expecting larger shrimp than the popcorn shrimp, but the seasoning was still good. I also tried the bean curd with peanut appetizer, it's pretty flavorful. Their hot and sour soup is also a great deal at $3.50, and it's about two servings worth! They also have a really good dry chili chicken. Their menu is extensive and they have plenty of seating inside. An awesome find in Wicker Park! Chengdu had been on my radar for awhile and it's safe to say this will be a new go-to. With an extensive Sichuan menu and affordable prices, we were able to try a variety of dishes at a great price. We started with the Zhong's dumplings which had a great spicy and sweet sauce and a flavorful pork filling. The dry chili chicken was super crispy and piping hot- I had not had numbing spice before, and it was an addicting phenomenon that was not too spicy. We also ordered the stir fried beef with celery, which added a refreshing crunch to the spicy, thinly sliced yet tender beef. I loved that the rice was sticky and not dry (and may have eaten too much of this). Our favorite, though, were the Sichuan string beans. They packed a punch of flavor and I am already craving this dish again! The staff was super prompt and professional, and the vibe is casual with a nicely decorated interior. Every bite, it was dripping with hot oil - it could be water(?) from the egg plant, but it was a little extra oily - but aside from that, everything was delicious. The service was not bad - they did get a little busier later during our meal and a lot of takeout orders. Walked in around 7pm on Saturday and the restaurant was packed. However, we only waited about 15 minutes to be seated. While waiting, I noticed tons of carry out orders. The space is very open, so it can get quite loud. The decor is simple yet effective as it provides an authentic and clean feel. The eating style is shared dishes. Generally, they're large enough for two or three people. We started with the West Lake Beef Soup which was similar to egg drop soup, but had beef and fresh vegetables. It was more traditional but still very good. The next one was stewed chicken with taro. The flavors were great, but I wish they added more chicken. The chicken itself was one of the best I've ever had. Finished the meal with Hong Tang Ci Ba, which is a rice cake rolled in toasted soy powder atop a caramelized brown sugar sauce. The restaurant has a combination of round tables for large parties and smaller rectangle tables for 2-4 people. Their price point is affordable, and Chengdu Impression serves comfort food that will not let you down. On a busy Halloween weekend, we put our name down on the waitlist, but didn't have to wait for more than 10 minutes. Bonus, they are BYOB! I placed an order online and it said 27 mins. I arrived two mins before and they hadn't even started my order despite caviar sending me a notification that it was ready. She told me they still have to make four items for my order but my order only contained four items... she reprinted my receipt and brought it to the kitchen as if they never got it. I waited another x mins and finally got it but we literally chose this place because of the shorter wait time so super annoying. The woman up front has sifted through piles of receipts, obv confused, and told every person who came in "it's not ready yet." There was a total of 9 of us waiting. Now onto the food... it was pretty good but SO oily. My stomach hurt pretty soon after. We started with the scallion pancakes. They were good, I liked the sauce, but they weren't like others I've had, they were basically phyllo dough. My husband really liked the dry chili chicken and the beef wide rice noodles. The noodles were over cooked but the flavor was good and the beef was tender. I got the cashew chicken, it was alright. Could've used some heat. Towards the end, I unfortunately also found a hair in the dish... so check for that. Simply one of the best restaurants in Chicago and one of the best Sichuan spots too! Ever since discovering Chengdu through their new Wicker Park location, I recommend them to everyone! There's something for everyone here too, so many incredibly flavorful vegetarian dishes, even the crab Rangoons are the best I've ever had, so fluffy and fresh and filled to the brim! Edit: I just tried the stewed chicken with taro and it's AMAZING. Succulent, with tender taro chunks and that delectable Sichuan sauce! The mapo tofu comes with ground beef, if you've an adversion to pork for any reason. Personally I love the pork belly with preserved vegetables as an appetizer. The rabbit is so tasty too-meaty bones with that addictive spice to them. All the sichuan spicy dishes have the staple mouth numbing spice-this is a flavorful spice even a white woman like me can handle-and it's simply craveable. I eat here at least once a week. The green peppercorn tofu and beef soup is also one of my favorite dishes. The braised duck in beer sauce is spicier imho than the numbing dishes and still so so good! And now they offer a full Peking duck dinner if you eat in-It's frankly just as good maybe even better than Sun Wah BBQ and half the price! I love the traditional rice crepes they come with the juicy crispy duck. They mixed the leftovers into noodles for us YUM. The noodles here in any dish are just so good.
