I wanted beef fried rice and veggie egg foo young. What I got was Rice A Roni and some soupy mixture of veggies heaped upon patties. This was my first visit--I got take out. I've passed the restaurant for years wondering if I should try it. Well...I was disappointed. I know now to avoid returning. I am a very picky eater and if simple dishes are not to my liking I do not return for a second try. I have just about exhausted finding a decent Chinese establishment in Lakeview, Uptown and Edgewater. Making the effort to travel to Chinatown is so very worth the effort. This will be my go to late night spot for delivery. This is the best thing open in the middle of the night and they deliver a great distance with delivery sites. Egg fu young - it was good, we age this dish a lot in my childhood and it brought back memories, I was so happy. Steam chicken dumplings - too doughy. I loved the sauce but this was not as flavorful as I would want so I wouldn't order again. The dough was too thick and soft it felt so different than most steamed dumplings. Pork pan noodles - it was good. Will order again. It wasn't perfect but it was the middle of the night and it was good! Bamboo garden kung poo chicken it was pretty good but not as spicy as we would like it. It's definitely prepared for the crowd that can't handle real seasoning. Crab Rangoon - my friends enjoyed it and said it was typical, I can't eat crab so I couldn't try it. Will order again, I am glad they are open late. Yelp wants me to help the community decide about Bamboo Garden. (It's a clever ploy to coax more reviews out of us mere mortals.) Um, you asked the wrong guy, so good luck with that, pfft! This garden is currently very peachy inside, with peach walls and peach tabletops. If you're offended by that color palette, do not enter. If you're Princess Peach, you might feel right at home... in name, at least. The food was good all around from a vegetarian perspective. They didn't have mock duck, so we got tofu versions of various dishes, which the photos show. I enjoyed our meals of varying spice levels. Service is excellent and our server always made sure we were doing well and still alive and all that fun stuff. It was quiet inside. We enjoyed it and we hope that you do as well! read more

This is the best Chinese takeout I've ever had in my life. period. You have to try it. I was dying for food around 2 am after a night out and Bamboo Garden was my savior. It was by far the best fried rice I've ever had. So much flavor and so much food. We had leftovers for days (always a bonus). We've tried so many different Chinese food places around Chicago but most have been meh so far until we found this place. I will note two things: this is very much an American Chinese food place and is not necessarily traditional so I can't recommend, from my personal experience, going here for traditional, authentic Chinese food (but I was purposefully looking for American style Chinese so just a side note there). Also this place does have slightly higher prices than most Chinese food places in Chicago but I would say the extra few dollars are definitely worth it. read more

Got the lemon chicken (with brown rice) and the crab rangoon, i never had lemon chicken before so i was excited to try it. From the pictures i saw, it looked like orange chicken and general tsos, but just lemony lol. and thats what i received. not sure if it was the best lemon chicken there is as there wasnt much depth of lemon flavor but you could still taste it. overall the dish tasted like a very light version of general tsos whereas it was both a bit tangy and a bit sweet, but the tanginess often overpowered the sweet. thre breading was also soggy which was quite surprising as i was expecting more of a crispy texture. im not sure if thats how its supposed to be prepared, and it did kind of throw off the dish a little bit, but seeing as it was my first time, i still enjoyed it for the most part. there was a choice to get white rice or brown rice with it. i got the brown rice. the brown rice tasted very clean and had absolutely no flavor lol. i often like to eat my food without any seasoning so i had no complaints, but duly note that there was absolutely no seasoning or flavor to the rice whatsoever. In general, the brown rice made the meal much lighter to consume compared to white rice or fried rice, the latter of which was not an option to choose as a side for this dish. read more

IMPORTANT INFO: as of 10/17/2020, during COVID-19, they are open until 1 a.m. every day of the week (photo is attached). You might have to call to place an order, but they are definitely open late. Otherwise- the food is decent Americanized Chinese food that occasionally everyone craves even though we hate to admit it. I'm assuming it's similar to the self-loathing that international tourists must feel when they desperately yearn for a bacon cheeseburger with the buns made out of glazed donuts or something. They have egg foo young, which isn't super common in everyday hole-in-the-wall places, and they do it excellently, with a delicious, non-lard-laden gravy that isn't too sweet or too thin. FINALLY FOUND MY EGG FOO YOU. We almost all our stuff. Beef and broccoli: 10/10. Was requested spicy (they sent a little red pepper sauce on the side, which worked out fine). It was cooked perfectly, as flavorful as it could be. Let's be real; it's beef and broccoli. General chow chicken: 7/10. We wished there had been more broccoli and less breading on the chicken. The flavor was on point completely (asked for yo be as hot as possible, nailed it), but there was A LOT of sauce, almost no broccoli, and the extra-breaded chicken absorbed the sauce to the point of ridiculousness). Next time we'll try to find a spicy non-fried chicken dish that has a variety of veggies. Combo egg foo young- 10/10. Nuff said. Hot and sour soup- 10/10 for what it is. Large size, flavor profile on point, exactly what you expect at a fair price point. Crab Rangoon- 6/10. Filling was great.... it was just a small amount of it. We ate it, but wouldn't go back for it. Egg rolls- 12/10. Loved them. Wish they were bigger, but MAN, perfectly cheap and greasy like you find in New York. Pan fried chicken potstickers- 8/10. Fine. The absolute worst food I have ever had. Spent $30 on food and couldn't even eat it. The rice was mushy, the beef tasted rotten, the orange chicken tasted like bar b que sauce. We threw it all in the garbage and ate cereal for dinner. What a disappointing anniversary dinner. Granted, it was delivered, and food is almost always better when eaten in-house, but this was bad. We ordered crab rangoon, beef teriyaki, and chicken-fried rice. The crab rangoon she'll was very soft and the cream cheese had a weird flavor and consistency. The chicken-fried rice was decent, maybe even good, although I hesitate to say good as it might just be relative to the beef teriyaki, which was almost inedible. The beef teriyaki was soggy and oddly purplish-brown, with a mediocre if not mostly just salty flavor. Veggies looked like old/over-cooked onions and broccoli. I'm not kidding, I didn't even want to eat it after a few terrible bites, and I'll eat just about anything. I hate doing negative reviews. Really not sure how to feel about this place. Last night I ordered delivery through GrubHub here and the order never came. Had to call in and get a refund which was a pain but worse things have happened. The next day my girlfriend convinced me to give them another chance so we walked there to make sure our order was taken and we'd get our food. Interior was quite shameful as there were dead plants everywhere and it was cluttered on the front desk. The food itself wasn't awful, but had its positives and negatives. First, the sesame chicken was watery and kind of glossy. It didn't taste like normal sesame chicken as it had a rich peanut flavor to it. Would not recommend that dish to anyone. Second, the chicken yakisoba was great. Definitely made fresh and had good amounts of chicken within it. Third, the crab Rangoon was delicious and my favorite part of the whole thing. Bamboo Garden has lived in myth and memory since the night I wandered over after a play for hot, greasy American Chinese food. The food's heat seeped through the paper bag as I held it on my lap on the train. The place: Inside, Bamboo Garden is simple. Not much decoration on the walls. Most remarkable is the philodendron--the roots and the base of the plant is on the front counter with the cash register, but the stringy vines circle the entire restaurant. It's a very happy plant with hearty leaves dripping down the walls. The tables by the front window are perfect for people-watching since it's at a busy intersection. The location: Out on Clark street, very easy to find and access via public transit. The food: The vegetable egg rolls came out hot and crispy. Kung Fu Tofu came with thick chunks of zucchini and a generous helping of tofu. The gravy was rich but needed a little soy sauce for enhanced flavor. The sesame shrimps were hardly shrimpy. They were large and the breading was crispy under the flavorful sauce which was a combination of citrus and spice. The service: Very attentive. Quiet. Our water glasses were kept full and everyone was very polite. I made the chef laugh when I struggled with the lack of light switch inside the bathroom (it's on the outside wall). Next time: I'll go easy on the spicy mustard, the horseradish really got my nose! And I'll check out the vegetable lo mein! read more

The price was fair for the portion and so I was very happy but I really thought every thing seemed to have tasted pretty bland. Not much flavor in our order and the fried rice was really wet. Hmmmm... Not too shabby. I was in the mood for some chinese take out and tried the mooshu beef here with korean seafood pancakes. Ok, the korean pancakes I shoulda already known it could be bad. It was surely a gamble and it was edible but I would not get that again. I like mine a little thinner and crisp, plus that's also how I make mine at home too and these were very thick, fluffy and eggy. There were good amounts of veggies and shrimp and scallop in it but I wasn't into these. Oh well. I received a free eggroll with my order and it's your typical low quality egg roll in a thick shell with lots of filler type veggies. I'm not a fan but non-asians might like it. My mooshu beef- I requested no beansprouts and glad they listened. It's also different than what I'm use to. The veggies were cut chunkier and zucchini was in it which was a first for me with mooshu but I really enjoyed this, especially cuz the beef was tender. I'd order this again for sure. Plus they give you plenty of pancakes to wrap it up in, along with plenty of sauce and a chili paste that was tasty and not sambal nor siracha. They're kinda on the slow side here so I'll take that into account next time.. I will be back for more mooshu and try general chow shrimp. I hope it's good cuz who doesn't like deep fried goodies in a savory sauce atop rice??? Yum! Got takeout from this place recently & our food was colorless and tasteless. We ordered pad thai and it came with absolutely no sauce on it. Literally just plain noodles & vegetables. That's how I first ended up ordering from Bamboo Garden. Bamboo Garden isn't the closest Chinese restaurant to me, but they consistently deliver hot and tasty Chinese food as if they were around the corner. The portions for the price are incredible (Chinese food leftovers are the best leftovers), and the vegetables in the entrees aren't those frozen mini-corns that everyone dreads seeing. Their veggies look freshly chopped and they actually have a crunch to them (as they rightfully should!). We had dinner here last night because the place we planned to go to was packed. I don't know that I ever would have made a trip to come here, but it was an excellent place to have dinner. I was a little worried about how empty it was on a Friday night, but the food was good and cheap so I don't know why they didn't have more dinners. And we were an obnoxious group because we were starving and brought 2 bottles of mixed drinks to dinner with us. (It is BYOB!) They were polite, friendly, refilled our water glasses frequently, and brought out the food quickly. What more could you ask for? We ordered the appetizer platter for 4 people, and I thought it was a good deal. For about $13 we got 4 crab rangoon, 4 pot stickers, 4 wontons, 4 of another thing that was amazing but I have no clue what it was, and 4 halves of eggrolls. The appetizers were all excellent. The platter was an excellent choice! For my entree I had yellow curry chicken. I thought it would be like the Thai dish of the same name (sine I've never seen this dish on other Chinese menus), however it was not at all like a Thai curry. It wasn't soupy. However it tasted good and had lots of veggies in it. So I thought it was a good choice. I also got to try the Chicken with Broccoli, and that dish was excellent! Excellent 'American' Chinese food. Sometimes you want a meal that is cheap, unpretentious, plentiful, and delicious. Bamboo Garden will do you just right. Start your meal with a jumbo pot of jasmine tea, then get the Sizzling Rice Soup for "Two". Yeah right - I've had four share it! It's only for "2" if you are eating nothing else, it's so huge. Other staples such as fried rice, sesame chicken, mapo tofu are all good and what you would expect, with large portions. Good service, and fresh flowers on every table. A couple on the train had mentioned Bamboo Garden when I was inquiring about a really great Chinese restaurant. They said that BG was one of the best in Chicago. I took the train ride to boys town, going in with high hopes. The restaurant is simply designed, and very casual. The menu matched this. I ordered the Yu Shiang Chicken with an order of egg rolls. The egg rolls were made to order and came to the table piping hot, and were presented with a gorgeous carrot garnish. These egg rolls are what saved this review. They were perhaps the top 3 egg rolls I've ever had. What killed this review was the entree. As stated I ordered the Yu Shiang chicken. I was so excited about my order when it came to the table because it was so much food. However, the entree tasted like one of those frozen PF Changs meals you can get at a grocery store. I think it was the sauce used. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong entree because others on yelp say they have the best Chinese food in Chicago. Either they don't know what real tasting Chinese food is or they have extremely low standards. What made me happier at least was the service. The customer service is solid here. read more

We ordered delivery from Bamboo Garden on a Saturday night and had a very good meal. Décor: n/a Bathroom: n/a Staff: The person who answered the phone and took our order was nice, the food came relatively quickly, and the delivery guy was friendly. Food: We had a decent-sized group of people so we order a bunch of food ranging from General Tso's Chicken to fried rice to hot and sour soup. Everything was very tasty and the portions are pretty hearty. The food arrived still warm/hot and there wasn't a single complaint from anyone about their order! In fact, everyone LOVED the spicy fried rice. Additionally, they gave us an extra order of Crab Rangoon! Bonus! The only thing I'd point out was that there was a lot of sauce on the chickens (General's, Orange, etc.) but I think that is because they intend you to pour it over the included rice (which wasn't done with us). Value: It's Chinese food so naturally it's going to be on the cheaper side. However, the taste and flavor of everything was spot on and wealth worth the price. To start off, if I could give this place 0 stars I would. I highly recommend saving yourself the time and money from going to this garbage place. Here was our terrible order: 1 Butter Chicken 1 Kadai Chicken 1 Kids Veg Fried Rice 1 Chicken Momos 4 Plain Naans First of all, the naans were not freshly made in house. They were the ones you can get 5 for $2 at Indian grocery stores. Meanwhile, we were charged $2 PER naan and they weren't even thoroughly reheated. Next, in the kadai chicken the chicken was not fully cooked as there was some pink visible in the meat. It seemed like the tomato chunks that were in the gravy had gone rotten based on the taste and the smell. The menu stated that the dish would be prepared extra spicy, though there was absolutely no taste/spices at all (not positive for COVID). The butter chicken had the same problem as the kadai chicken. It smelled and tasted like rotten tomato soup with no spices at all. The menu also stated that the butter chicken would be spicy but it clearly was not. The momos were not even real momos. They were basically frozen dumplings that were reheated. Even the portions of the dishes were not sufficient for the ridiculous amount that they charge. Our family of 4 could not even finish the small portions because of how disgusting the food was. Stay away from this place. read more
