This place takes the cake for my new favorite Chinese takeout. The portions were large and the food was cooked perfectly. It took a little longer than the average takeout but it was worth the wait. They gave us an accurate time when placing the order so just trust that estimate. Everything was delicious. I got beef and broccoli, vegetable fried rice, kung pao pork, and some crab rangoons to share with my partner. The fried rice was perfectly seasoned and the beef and broccoli sauce made me reminiscent of childhood. I only gave a 4 instead of a 5 because I was really hoping they'd have some fried dumplings. The meal was the perfect amount of no frills, good price, delicious flavor, and warm comfort that I was looking for. Truly some of the best Chinese food I've had in Logan square. The general tso's chicken was perfectly crispy and well seasoned with just a little kick. The shrimp lo mein was saucy with a generous amount of big, plump shrimp. We dined in and the service was excellent. 2.5 stars. Wanted Chinese, and didn't know about Friendship down the street. Came in and was a bit hesitant but there were three tables of people, so I decided I'd give it a try. The place is a bit rundown but everyone's happiness made it bearable. Seating for about 20, but they do a big take out business I saw while here. Ordered egg rolls and beef and broccoli, which I thought would be safe. It was eh, at best. The broccoli was undercooked, the beef was slimy (the little bit that was in the dish), and the egg rolls were overcooked. The service was friendly though! I love Van Phat! I get lunch here regularly (the Hunan Vegetables, which is very flavorful and spicy). The staff are very sweet and accommodate dietary preferences/restrictions (I'm vegetarian). It can take them a while to make your order since they only have one person cooking, but they're upfront about the wait so there are no surprises. I called for a pickup order, and it only took about 15 minutes. I ordered a vegetable lo mein, which had broccoli, bamboo shots, carrots, bok choy, mushrooms, and snow pea pods. I would've gotten the lunch special, but they didn't have a vegetable egg roll as an option. The shrimp fried rice was surprisingly good. It wasn't too salty, and has more subtle tastes beyond soy sauce. I would go back to try more dishes. Overall, I was happy with the meal, and it helped that they were very nice. read more

First time trying this place, but I've pass by it for years. The inside is nice - traditional Chinese decoration. Let me tell you about the lunch specials. All lunch specials include white or shrimp fried rice and either an egg roll or a can of soda. All their lunch specials are less than $6 but overall, their menu is fairly priced. Good place to go to for lunch specials or for good Americanized Chinese food! I'll definitely show my face around here again. Also, the bathroom was super nice. Not happy at all with my order. Ordered Mongolian Beef paid extra for vegetables. Every where I've order Mongolian beef it's always been brown sauce and spicy. This place doesn't make it spicy and it was clear sauce very bland. So I paid $2 extra for Beef and vegetables because that's what it turned out to be. I also ordered the thick lo mein noodles with beef and what I got was angle hair spaghetti and beef. The crab Rangoon was half empty and chewy. I'm never ordering again. The dining room feels dirty, smells odd, and has a really bad overall ambiance. Plus the lady that runs the place always seems like she's stressed out. The food itself is hit or miss-- the first time we tried it, it was great, but the second time was horrible. But it's mad cheap. So balance that out and make your own decision. I created a Yelp account just to review this restaurant. Why? I have lived a few doors down from this place for nine months, and within these past nine months I've probably ordered carry out a dozen or so times. With that said, I want everyone who reads Yelp reviews to know this: Van Phat is a great, cheap Chinese food restaurant. Don't let amateur reviewers fool you... just because they strolled in one day expecting grade A, premium angus beef on their McDonald's cheeseburger and wrote a bad review about it doesn't mean it's true. You know what? That's not even a good comparison because unlike McDonald's Van Phat actually has FRESH food. Seriously. Ask the owners about it. They'll tell you about how they don't store food in the freezer to be used many weeks later and that they spend many hours in the morning prepping and making recipes from scratch to be used later that day. Every item I've ordered from Van Phat I have enjoyed, especially the hot and sour soup--best I've ever had in my life! You have to try it. It's delicious. Honestly, this place is a little, cheap Chinese food gem. I recommend giving it a chance. Besides, you don't want to miss out on the bright pink tablecloths and wonderfully kitschy decor. There are many options on the Van Phat menu, yet very few good ones at that. First time visiting, and probably the last time. I ordered the Singapore rice noodles ($8.75), beef & shrimp combo. My friend had the lunch special (Beef Subgum) with egg roll and option of plain or shrimp fried rice. Laden with MSG, we definitely felt it afterwards. My noodles wasn't the traditional thin white rice vermicelli noodles-instead, slightly crispy yellow thin noodles that were super salty. For the price, not worth the spike of sodium intake. I lived down the street from Van Phat for 2 years and it was my most frequented place ! It's a hole in the wall (literally go in and see the food come in from the kitchen to the dining area from a slide up door in the wall) so don't expect anything phenomenal. I used to stop in for pick up every other week and although they can sound very curt on the phone, the ladies who worked there love regulars and kind people. Even mediocre food would have earned them a decent amount of my business due to convenience but it's just awful. Stringy & fatty meats, over sugared sauces, and bland flavors. It was my first time trying food from Van Phat, and I knew it was more of a Chinese Dive than a nice Chinese restaurant, but I have had decent Chinese foods from slop shops before and expected this place to be about the same. I was very disappointed. On the upside, the people working there were friendly and my food was ready when they said it would be. On the downside, the food was terrible! I have never seen such god awful food in my life. The meat in all the dishes were barely cooked, colorless, flavorless strips of mystery meat that is likely from the alley rats outside the restaurant. The fried rice was terrible, the sweet and sour sauce unbearable, and the crab rangoon was a tasteless puff of cream cheese with no trace of crab. The egg rolls were greasy and totally unappetizing. We ended up throwing away most of what we ordered because we just couldn't stomach it. I do not recommend this place. Very surprised it is still in business. read more

I just moved to the Logan Square area and my friends brought me over to Van Phat for lunch on a Sunday. It's a very old school joint. I didn't feel that it looked dirty or smelled bad. Maybe I was lucky. There was another table besides us dining which was a rather large party. A young waitress was overseeing tables. I don't know how service is here overall but she either could have a) used some help or b) checked up on the tables a bit more. It took awhile to get our beverages (around 10 minutes) and I asked for a pitcher of water because I was afraid it would be awhile before she would check on us again. We ordered the Egg Rolls, Shrimp Sour Soup with Straw Mushroom, Fried Spicy Beef, Egg Foo Young and Combination Fried Rice. The Egg Rolls were okay. The soup was a broth and the shrimp was fresh. I didn't feel scared to eat it. The Egg Foo Young was in a nice gravy. I would definitely order that again. It's hard to screw up Fried Rice. It was good. The Fried Spicy Beef was actually not that spicy. I would definitely order that again but ask for it to be very spicy. I have been advised to NOT order any of the sesame dishes. I don't know why but just don't. All the dishes are made to order so be patient. You aren't going to be in and out of this place as I believe there is only one cook. The Lunch Special is an awesome price - $5.25. I like that the take out menu has a typo that says "Free can of pop or BATTLE water." AWESOME! I want battle water! My life would probably be 10x more extreme! As everyone else is saying, it's cheap. Seafood is said to be their specialty so I'd say take a chance if you like seafood. I'm pretty nervous when it comes to eating seafood and I felt totally fine afterward. It's good to support local businesses! read more

The food at this neighborhood location is fair. The portions are large (enough to share in my opinion.) Service problems, however, are the plague of this place: I will let the occasional incorrect phone order slide because I know it's difficult to understand ... but approximately 1 of 3 orders I've placed is incorrect on arrival - completely different entree. (I have no experience with ordering on site - this may be fine.) Additionally - you're going to want to take cash ... long story, but let's just say you aren't going to want to wait for any sort of credit card transaction. Help will most likely be required from all corners of the restaurant for that. Overall - good food, when you can get the right order. Since I live across the street, I was really hoping to like this place. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't good. I ordered crab rangoon and the four seasons, and the crab rangoon were decent. The Four Seasons, however, was very bland and just poor quality. With that being said, the lady at the counter was very sweet, my order was correct, and my food was hot and ready when I arrived to pick it up.
