People should know. I've lived on Pratt, one block away from Great Wall restaurant for almost 20 years. I've ordered and picked up food from them in the amount of a few thousand dollars over the years. Today I stopped in just to use the wash room, I had to go #1 really bad. The woman there that I've picked up food from countless times told me no. Said I had to buy something!. I reminded her how long I've been a costumer, still she said no, unless I buy. It's been years since I visited the restaurant. Food was delicious and I'm from Chicago where you pay attention to taste, presentation, atmosphere. So I took a chance several months ago to check them out and order what I'm very particular about (shrimp, egg foo yong). It wasn't what I expected or hoped for. The ambience is more like an intimate dining bar setting, so I didn't feel like I was in the right place. I love Chinese cuisine and AZ doesn't have many. I found a shard of glass in my food and they stole my money. I loved this place for a long time until recently. One incident happened where I had received a small order of fried rice, but I was charged for a large order of fried rice. I returned to the restaurant to see if I could have my money back or exchange for a large rice and a man in the front told me no. He said he can't give me my money back through card or cash and he could only exchange egg rolls. They literally stole my money. What's even worse is the second incident that happened. A group of friends and I decided to order from Great Wall Chinese Restaurant tonight. It was a decently large order, including one order of Sesame Chicken, and one order of Sesame Beef. All of our other food was correct upon arrival, but we opened our food and saw that we had two orders of Sesame Chicken. Now, I totally understood that this was a big order, and I assumed they were having a busy night, so I called and politely asked if we could have the correct food sent to us. Upon picking up the phone and explaining the situation, I was immediately berated by the employee on the other end. I said that we had gotten two orders of chicken, and he said there was "no way that was possible" because we were "their only customers tonight" (yikes!). I asked if we could simply have the replacement food sent back to us, and he grumbled and hung up. This is where our Halloween really starts to get spooky: an entire hour later, I received a call saying they were downstairs, and to bring the old dish down. We exchanged the old sesame chicken for... guess what... brand new sesame chicken. It was still fucking chicken. Like, I'm sorry, but who can't tell the fucking difference between beef and chicken. Called establishment and left a voicemail early the next morning after I got off. Waited a few hours and they never returned my call. I called back during business hours and had the most unbelievable conversation with the "not manager". He eventually tried to accuse me of lying. He told me he found it suspicious I called back so late (the next morning of purchase) even after I'd told him I work overnights. He also kept talking over me. I'd even asked him if he could hear me and he said yea so at that moment I knew he was doing it on purpose. Anyway, he told me he'd relay message to manager but that the manager would take a while to get back to me. We begin to argue as I once again have to explain why I couldn't call the moment I discovered the maggot and he HANGS UP ON ME seconds later, reiterating that a manager would reach out to me...blah blah blah. I immediately decide to walk up there. The manager (whom I was told wasn't there just minutes before on the phone) looked at the piece of broccoli the dead maggot was on along with a full to-go box of veggie lo mein and 2 egg rolls, said "oh", and proceeded to do my refund. The food here is what you would expect from a typical Chinese-American takeout restaurant. It's nothing fancy, and the food isn't spectacular or super authentic, but it's just what you'd expect. I do wish prices would be a little cheaper since its takeout, but then again, it's on par with Rogers Park prices. I ordered a small (pint-sized) crab fried rice. I do appreciate how they offer pint and quart sizes for some of the menu items. Don't be fooled by the minimal entrees on the overhead menu, they have a pretty extensive menu on their paper carry out menu on the counter. FYI it's minimum $10 for card. The biggest pet peeve was that the crab was actually chopped imitation crab. If that was the case, I wish the menu reflected that. I have been on a quest for a Chinese food restaurant that fits a few criteria: 1. The basic food needs to be pretty tasty and not overly greasy, 2. Delivery needs to happen fast enough that I'm still hungry and awake and that the food is still hot, 3. Pricing needs to be decent as my dog loves Chinese food and the order will have food for her also. Picture this: I was settled in for a quiet night with my girls. We wanted some pad thai, fried rice, and some other staples in asian cuisine. It was set to be a great night. That was, until, we decided to order from this restaurant. We ordered one order of sesame chicken, and one order of sesame beef. Please picture both of these dishes in your head. Do they look the same? If you said yes, you are on the wacky staff of this restaurant. We received two orders of sesame chicken. We tasted them both, and even cut them in half to examine the meat inside. Alas, as we thought, both were chicken. A simple mistake we said, we'll just call back and explain the mix-up to see what they can do. This was our second mistake of the evening. The man on the phone was incredibly rude, and insulted us right off the bat. Apparently, the two dishes look the same and we are mistaken. After we explained that we all tried them both, and confirmed their identity, he still was reluctant to admit that a mistake was made. Eventually, he is GRACIOUS enough to send us an order of sesame beef, as long as we give back the rejected order of sesame chicken. Were they planning to serve it to their next unsuspecting victim? We hope and pray that this is not the case. After almost 45 minutes of waiting, we call back to ask if our order is actually on the way. We find out, that the delivery man is 10 minutes away. So we begin to anxiously await the arrival of our sesame beef. The man comes. We open the container. And again, we receive an order of SESAME. CHICKEN. The catch this time? It was raw. Needless to say, after three orders of sesame chicken, rude encounters of the phone, and the smell that I am convinced will never leave my friends' dorm room, we will not be ordering from Great Wall again. read more

This place is exactly what you expect it to be: cheap and greasy, hole-in-the-wall, American-style Chinese. The portions are large, the word "spicy" meaningless. I got two main dishes and will probably stretch them to three meals. The best thing was the (almost certainly frozen) veggie egg roll, with a thin, crispy rshell. The sauteed green beans were also pretty delicious. The "ma po bean curd" in no way resembled actual ma po tofu you'd get at a more authentic Chinese restaurant (or, you know, in china). It was basically a tofu stir fry in a generic brown sauce. Once I readjusted my expectations, though, it didn't taste bad, just very boring.
