Stopped in for some dinner. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a very softly spoken woman. Since this was my first time here, I needed a moment to decide on what I was going to order. Keeping in mind, this is a cash only place, and I wanted to try as many dishes as possible. The first thing I noticed most items didn't have a smaller size. I asked if they have a dinner menu, such as the lunch menu. She said no and apologized. I wouldn't be able to what I wanted to try. I ended up getting a small chicken fried rice and that's it. I received my order took it home and placed it on my fancy paper plate. The first thing I noticed was the use of peas and carrots in the rice. I prefer mung beans and onion. And if peas and carrots come along for the ride, I'm cool with that. There was plenty of chicken with bits of fried egg. The flavor was okay but it was less than 6 bucks. Hmmm. I would love smaller sizes in the egg foo young and chop suey. I think the lunch menu gives you the most value. But I wasn't ready to spend almost 40 bucks to try my favorites. read more

Cash is the name of the game at this small Chinese American carryout. Dragon Gate is old school in ways both bad and good. It can be inconvenient to remember to bring some bills, but before heading out you got to stick a few in the wallet. Good thing is that you won't have to bring many. This is about as dirt cheap as you can get for an entree in Chicago for sure. A cheap price tag comes at a cost. It doesn't have the bold flavors many other Chinese restaurants have. That means there's not the usual amount of spiciness. Even so, it's not bad. The portions are also pretty good, so you're not even sacrificing there. It's about $5 for an entree at lunch, so don't wait long before going. Last time visiting here I got the Bean Curd Home Style. There's not much that's complex about it, just lots of tofu and vegetables. Easy to make stuff and it was out fast. The food is much more authentic than some of these with flavors of chili and garlic. Hit up here for some cheap ass Chinese. It's best to go at lunch with those amazingly low prices on the specials but it's not even that expensive for the rest of the menu. I decided to do a takeout order tonight at a nearby Chinese spot and came across Dragon Gate. Based off the reviews, I decided to give the a try. They are very quick to have your meal ready in no time. My food was ready within 15 minutes of me calling. Have cash ready because they only accept that method of payment. I ordered shrimp fried rice, Mongolian beef and general tso chicken. I also decided to get an order of egg rolls. The shrimp fried rice was flavored well with a good amount of shrimp (they were also decently sized). Pass on the Mongolian beef. It was a good flavor but the beef was very tough and hard to chew and eat. Pass on the general tso. It was soggy, and didn't have the usual flavor it normal should have. You expect it to be sweet and spicy. This was just spicy. The egg rolls are amazing! Crispy, flavorful, and everything you want an egg roll to be! Overall, I may go for the rice and egg rolls but that's about it. Glad I tried it but it did not wow me. Lastly, customer service was stellar! read more

I had a good meal here yesterday; I had Szechuan chicken and barbeque pork lo mein. Both dishes were tasty; the Szechuan chicken had a nice moderate kick to it, and the lo mein was satisfying. Neither was greasy and neither sauce was "gluey." Nice mix of vegetables in both dishes - and both the chicken and the pork were good. Big portions for a low cost! The staff was very friendly. I had ordered from this place once a while back, but I'd have to say that this meal was quite a bit better. I am pretty picky about Chinese food, having lived in San Francisco for years and gotten used to it there; I would rate this as very good casual Chinese take-out, I quite enjoyed the food I ordered. After driving past this place a million times, my family finally decided to try it out and ordered takeout from Dragon Gate on Christmas Eve. The staff was friendly and the place was very clean inside. The prices are great- you get such good portions for your money! Cash only, by the way. We had egg rolls, chicken fried rice, vegetable fried rice, vegetable chop suey, and vegetable lo mein. Everything was excellent and the egg rolls were especially delicious! Great service, great food, and low prices?!? I think I need to come back here! The lady at the counter was patient as we stood for about 10 minutes to decide what we wanted. She was very nice to us and did not try to rush us as we ordered about 10 dishes. I made sure to get the egg rolls like other reviews suggested. THEY WERE CRISP HOT AND FLAVORFUL. I didn't order enough :/ Everything was still hot by the time we got home and we even had to wait to eat because some dishes were still steaming. All the meat was actual meat and I could decipher everything that was on my plate. There's nothing worse than reading the review from someone who has a tremendously different sense of taste and basing your food choices off of that person. I saw a bunch of recent positive reviews for this place and wanted to try it. My husband and I had been craving Chinese food and had yet to find a good place in the area. So we ordered combo fried rice--extra spicy, Mongolian beef, general tso chicken, shrimp egg foo young, egg rolls and crab Rangoon. This is our go-to order for most Chinese restaurants. Everything we ordered was EXTREMELY BLAND. I have never had Chinese food that was this bland. Even the extra spicy fried rice was bland. Someone had stated that the crab Rangoon were the best they ever had and another raved about the egg rolls so we ordered those...HIGHLY disappointing. The food was $52-which is average for a takeout order of that size (I guess), but definitely was not worth the money spent for the quality of food. I don't know if this was an off night or if this is the norm. I won't be finding out because I will not be ordering from here again. You could not differentiate the vegetable flavor to even the rice ! Precut factory veggies and horrible Mushy Shrimp. This dish was so bad and embarrassing. If you like sticky flavorless sauce with some heat you go for it Szechuan Chicken with Garlic Sauce: Painfully disappointing incredibly bland dish. Slight heat but again , factory processed veggies and a thick horrid sauce with no garlic essence whatsoever!! Hardly any protein. Factory veggies. Cornstarch based grossness and No garlic. No crisp veggies. It's so ridiculous !!! All the veggies were drowned !! You could not pick out any flavors!! All one note from beginning to our " one serving "end. We had no desire to eat more after one helping We also decided on Almond cookies. I love those decadent buttery discs of soft joy. We have lived in the neighborhood for many years and never thought of trying this small establishment, but one day we decided to give it a try since our friends and neighbors have all been there as this is their usual go to... I am so glad we did, there is something about their fried rice, we get their chicken fried rice spicy, and also their chicken lo mein, there is something about it that is is delicious!!! Oh, we normally don't get appetizers since we like to just dig in to the entrees, the egg rolls are super tasty, and then we tried their crab Rangoon!!! Goodness gracious!!! If you like crab Rangoon, it is the best we have had, it actually taste heavenly with the consistency mixture of the cream cheese and the flavoring of the imitation (I can only assume) crab meat!!! Tons of garlic and spice, quality ingredients, hot and fresh. My usual go to Chinese spot was closed so I wanted to give a new place a try, I called in for pick up for 2 orders of beef and broccoli a common favorite. Once I got home it looked like some type of chicken with vegetables I called the restaurant back to let them know the mistake and the cashier was completely rude about it said that I said chicken and broccoli so it was my mistake! Beef and chicken don't even sound the same! Now I had another person in the car who also heard me correctly and I also repeated it once I picked it up, I'm only writing this review because I work in the industry and he didn't even apologize and treated it like it was my mistake never asked how they could fix it or anything he said we needed to bring the food back in order to get a refund not even asking if they could give us the correct food! First of all, I've tried just about every Chinese delivery place in the Rogers Park/ Evanston area, and this is the ONLY place that actually has FLAVOR in the food. Period!! The flavor is VERY GOOD.... really. It's well balanced, spicy is hot, it's deep and rich, etc. I find the texture a tiny bit thick, maybe a little too much oil, BUT THERE'S FLAVOR!!! Yum... Support this small business! The family owners work so hard and deserve it! I have been a consistent customer at Dragon Gate basically my whole life. My parents took me here every Saturday as a child and I continue to go here as an adult. When I was about 8 years old, the owners started to let me "waitress" for them aka bring plates to the tables. It was one of my fondest childhood memories. When I go in now I not only pick up great food but smiles and updates about our families as well.
