The customer service was horrible. I went here from a referral from a customer who always gets carry out. The older woman taking our order was very rude, and instantly told us prices were higher different for dining in as soon as we entered the restaurant. I wanted to order a small/side portion of pork fried rice for a toddler and she told me we don't do that. I didn't feel welcome at all and was very shocked by her behavior. $27.46 total for pork fried rice, and combination with small side of plain rice. The food was not bad. The Wonton soup was ok. Lots of tasty wontons. Sweet and sour pork wasn't good. The small pieces of pork surrounded by so much breading. A very long overdue review, but Hunan Spring is my favorite place to go for Chinese food in Evanston. I'm lucky enough to live essentially right next door, and when I want something quick and delicious, there they are! I especially appreciate the lunch specials. About $10 will get you an entree, side of fried rice (which I sometimes sub for white rice), and your choice of eggroll or soup. I usually have enough left over for a second meal later. As far as delicious, quick and classic Chinese food goes, Hunan Spring hits it out of the park. I was honestly shocked to see the mediocre reviews. They were a very easy go-to spot for take-out during covid. Online ordering and pick up was a breeze! Now that dine-in is back, I continue to support this business. Service is fast and the food is affordable. The restaurant is very clean and the tables are distanced well. Whenever I'm craving Chinese cuisine, this is a place I can lean on. It's not anything super fancy, just greasy and reliable. Some of my favorite choices are the crab rangoon, general tso's chicken, and any of the lo meins. The entrees come with white rice and the portions are pretty hefty. Whenever I order take-out, I know I'll have leftovers to last the next few days. Definitely give it a try! read more

I'm sorry to say but this is some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Just an order of fried vegetable dumplings as an appetizer...big, thick doughy pouches with overcooked vegetable mush inside. Could not even get through one. Don't like giving bad reviews but this is inedible. Maybe they do some dishes better but I do recall that many years ago we stopped ordering from here because the quality went way down. I really wanted to love this place. It's so conveniently located to home and was highly recommended by a friend. Normally we are ok with driving all the way to Chinatown to enjoy a nice lunch plus all the good shopping in the area. But we thought we should finally give Hunan Spring a try for lunch. They have several different lunch entrees where you also get an egg roll or soup included. I went with the General Tso's chicken, fried rice and the hot and sour soup. My wife got the Shrimp and Lobster sauce, fried rice and the egg roll. Hot & Sour Soup: very nice flavor and ingredients but the consistency was overly gelatinous. Still, very tasty. General Tao's Chicken: Very Good Fried Rice: No Bueno, weird flavor, very dry, some gristle, I should have asked for white rice instead. Shrimp & Lobster Sauce: The shrimp were on the tough side but not inedible. The sauce was not lobster sauce where they include fermented black beans. Very bland, and shrimp had little flavor. Egg Roll: Above Average, crispy and piping hot. Cleanliness: Exceptional Service: Ok Value: Not Bad The verdict? I think we are going to stick with Chinatown but may give this place another shot in the future. read more

This used to be my go-to spot in Evanston for quick-service and takeout Chinese food. Sadly, I came back when I was in the neighborhood and brought it home to Chicago and was disappointed. What used to be a solid 4 (4.5?) star place is reduced to acceptable fare. I used to order the hot and sour soup for an elderly relative and he loved it, but we didn't order it this time around so I can't vouch for it anymore. We probably ordered 20 times from them from 2006 to 2016... The lo mein is worth it. Like many, many Chinese restaurants in Chicagoland, they make some items really well and others, not so much. It's just that all those years ago, they hardly made a miss. Not sure what has happened. To be fair, though, let's start with what was still good. 1. Service. They are friendly, patient and make accommodations and special requests. For this reason alone I could continue to order from them. Orders are made correctly, accurately, and packaged securely. 2. Speed. Orders are ready when they say they will be. Never disappointed by them on this. 3. Price. Not cheap, but not expensive. Items we ordered that I would definitely recommend: the combination lo mein. Also their chicken with garlic sauce is very good. Sadly, everything else we ordered was average. Orange chicken was over-breaded terribly, and the sauce became a sticky goop. Wonton soup, which used to be excellent, is a shadow of its former self. The broth had no flavor whatsover, so I'm of the belief someone made a mistake when making it. Wontons themselves were sad although the noodles used to make them are good. Crab rangoon was passable. To be honest, I kind of miss the old days when it was just a corner fast food joint with limited seating and a focus on takeout. They have expanded into a full-fledged restaurant, but the good news is that the food is just as good as ever. There is a wide range of options, and I could live on the fried rice if it had just a touch more flavor or heat. My daughter loves the sweet-and-sour chicken, and the Mushu is also really, really good. Service is really fast and good . This place has always been mediocre. I've lived in Evanston off and on for 20 years and no matter when I give this place a try, my expectations were never met. This is the closest Chinese restaurant to my house, so this is the only reason why I choose this place at times when needing to satisfy my cravings. I ordered a large egg foo young and large beef and broccoli this last time. The portion size definitely did not equate to what a large should have been. I know the cost of doing business has gone up, but to still charge an outrageous price for that small amount of food and not even provide utensils or sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce is unacceptable. I definitely will not be back. I have given this place too many chances over the last 20 years. This last time I was hoping they would have changed or at least met my expectations after being away from Evanston for 7 years. read more
