Absolutely amazing for when you're craving quintessential Americanized Chinese food. Crab Rangoon (4/5) was just a bit over cooked, but everything else was straight up delicious. Chicken teriyaki sticks (5/5), egg drop soup (4/5) needed just a bit of salt and pepper, sesame chicken (5/5), pork fried rice (4/5), and egg rolls (5/5) are the best I've had since moving to Chicago. Still love this place 2 years after my last review. I keep coming back for the lunch specials and have almost made my way through most of their lunch menu items. My fav tends to be the hunan chicken and shrimp since it's one of the more flavorful dishes that isn't super heavy on the sauce. Overall I find that most of their dishes don't feel greasy with the exception of the eggplant with garlic sauce. To be fair, eggplant soaks up a lot do oil. Even my dads authentic Chinese cooking is the same at home when it comes to eggplant dishes. While I'm not a huge fan of dining in since there's not much atmosphere there, it's a comfortable and clean place to grab a quick bite if you're not interested in take out. Super solid choice for those nights cooking is not in the cards. Fast and cheap delivery for us as we live close, and it's even kind of embarassing, but its definitely for *that* kind of time when moving is not an option. Not good! Like, scratch your head and wonder how it's so bad... Not good! Chicken is as fatty as other reviewers say it is. The sauce is greasy to the point of losing all flavor and just being oil. Rice was hard and also lacking flavor. Worst part of my visit (dine-in) was the burning incense. I haven't smelled such direct incense smoke since my friends basement in high school. This time idk if they got a new chef or just got lazy, but it was literally chunks (normally thinly sliced, this was legit 2inch cubes) of uncooked eggplant with almost no sauce and pooled in oil. It's what you ate as a kid and still love as an adult even if you've now had real, authentic, and delicious Italian and Mexican. This place is the equivalent of that, but with Chinese food. It's the great non-authentic Americanized Chinese food that we all ate before when discovered that no one in china really eats it. But, hey, because it's non-authentic and Americanized doesn't stop you from enjoying a thick crust pepperoni pizza. Same rules should apply there. This place is for that Chinese food take out that just has to be scratched every once in a while. And it's the best of that kind of Chinese. Big portions, cheap, tasty, complete with cliched fortune cookies. The food comes quickly but, just like all those old-school Chinese places, the staff is polite but not too good with the social graces. When I've called, I've never been told when it's ready or how much it is. PRO TIP: It's always ready for pick up in about 10 minutes. Go if you love good, low cost, Americanized Chinese food. Don't do if you're looking for authentic or traditional. Luckily, we live in a city where you can get both depending on your craving! read more

A previous reviewer made the point that "it's good for what it is," and I wholeheartedly agree. What it is, is cheap Americanized Chinese food. Not my choice every day, but sometimes it really hits the spot! You can get lunch here for $6.25 (a protein plus either white or fried rice), and at a smaller size that your normal huge serving from a Chinese restaurant, this portion still leaves me with leftovers. The veggie fried rice is delicious -- I recommend upgrading for a small charge. If you're picking up your order to go, parking is easy and your food is ready in less than ten minutes. One thing to be careful of: the sauce for my sweet and sour chicken to-go order was packaged in a mini version of those typical paper Chinese carryout containers. The first time I ordered, I didn't realize that and was clumsy with my to go bag. When I got home, there was sweet and sour sauce all over. Friends of mine had some lunch there and told me how it was their go to spot. Me being the lazy person I am decided to order delivery. I always say first times are better at the restaurant but in this case, it did not dissapoint. I ordered the Garlic Chicken (one spice level from hottest), Beef Chow Fun, and Crab Rangoon. I could have had the soup alone for a meal. I decided I could not have any rice a made myself a small bowl. The rice was cooked well along with the chicken, pork, and shrimp. Last night, I needed hot and sour soup. It is one of my comfort foods, but since moving away from Maryland 10+ years ago where they have perfected it, I've basically resigned myself to glutinous, chunky, poorly flavored varieties that come without crunchy noodles. Despite it being so hated on Yelp, Hunan Spring is literally across the street from me, so we ordered carryout from there and I resigned myself to another sub-par soup experience. Guess what I saw when I opened the bag? CRUNCHY NOODLES. Trans fats be damned, I was in love. And the soup was perfectly sour (not quite spicy enough, though), with small pieces of tofu, meat, mushrooms, and egg instead of huge chunks. I ate the entire pint. We also got the scallion pancake, which was chewy and crunchy, well flavored, came with a nice dipping sauce. A little greasy, but overall quite good. 4 stars for the hot and sour soup + scallion pancake only. 2 stars for everything else. I've had other things from there, all of which are blah. Crab rangoons don't even come close to Three Harmony's in Uptown. Shrimp with lobster sauce was BLAND. Pork fried rice was dry and needed a touch of spice and sweetness to even begin to approach Furama's. Szechuan-style bean curd was not fried, which was nice, but very soupy. Happy Family made me sad. Passed by this place a few times and finally got around to getting food delivered last night. I ordered a small hot and sour soup as well as combination lo mein noodles, while my food buddy got some beef and scallop dish. Pros: -portion size is pretty generous, especially for the price. I pretty much paid $10 for a generous portion of soup as well as a big chinese take-out box literally on the verge of exploding with noodles. -delivery is fast! Grubhub estimated 1 hour, but we got the food within 30 minutes or so. -tried a bite of the beef and scallops, and I liked the flavor. Cons: -the hot and sour soup tasted somewhat soapy... didn't have the strong, tangy flavor that I love so much. Tasted rather diluted and something about it was off. Also, portion was big, but it was mostly liquid... not too much actual stuff in the soup. So that was disappointing. -my lo mein wasn't bland, but it was more salty/oily than actually flavorful. Downed two bottles of water soon after I ate my meal... which says something about the salt content. 3.5 stars overall. Will try their other food next time and will hopefully like it more! read more

I've ordered from here twice now and I think I'd happily continue to order from here. The most unique thing about their menu is the option to order small-sized entrees. For take out, the entree comes in a paper "1 serving" container that rice usually comes in, and the rice in an even smaller mini container that I had no idea existed until I ordered from here. For $6 it's not as much food as your typical Chinese restaurant lunch specials for around the same price, but these are available all day. Another great deal is the combination platters, with a side of bbq pork fried rice and egg roll for around $8. I'd say this is a better deal because of the amount of food you get. Since it's so filling this easily lasts me two (not too healthy) meals. I strongly recommend getting your sauces on the side for typical stirfry dishes (garlic chicken w/ vegetables, etc). If you request it on Grubhub they pay attention. Then you get steamed veggies and meat alongside with sauce you can add with more discretion. Aside from the fact that the food is a bit too greasy, it all tastes pretty good. And for Chinese food, it's not too salty. General Tso's had a nice sauce and was crispy, good quality chicken pieces. The pork fried rice with the combo platters. The sauces that I get on the side actually have onions and garlic in it! And they taste much better than many restaurants that serve pretty much cornstarch+soy sauce. I'm a pretty big fan of their shrimp in lobster sauce. Good sauce, big pieces of shrimp that aren't overcooked, and the combination platter isn't more expensive than the other platters. It's pretty typical fare, but I think Hunan Spring is worth your money a little tiny bit more than other similar hole-in-the-walls. 3.5 stars. read more

I actually had to search for it and it's also in tiny shreds but again very little of it. Girlfriend was unhappy with her dish ( didn't specify, didn't ask). This is quite possibly the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I ordered an egg roll and 'very spicy' orange chicken. The good: The egg roll wrap was crispy, not soggy or greasy, and it had good flavor. The orange chicken was also very crispy and packed to the brim, so much so that they packaged the broccoli separate because there was no room in the container. The bad: The chicken was super fatty. Not sure how, like do they wrap the chicken pieces in skin before breading? That makes it sound almost tasty, but it's not. The sauce on the chicken is oily. I thought maybe it was hot chili oil, but it's not, it's just grease. The sauce was mild spicy at best. The sauce didn't have any orange flavor either.The broccoli was under-steamed, almost raw. The ugly: The inside of the egg roll was almost all large pieces of undercooked cabbage and tasted like it was seasoned with Lawry's seasoned salt. How do you screw up an eggroll? It's the one thing that should always be at least decent from any Chinese food place. Ugh.
