Thanks to yelp reviews I tried this place yesterday. I live so close and have passed by so many times. I went with my picky boyfriends who loves chicken fried rice. We order that , lemon chicken which I like . Also broccoli with garlic sauce. We waited about 10 minutes in the seating area . The service was very friendly, I told her it was first time there. Ordered lock down delivery for lunch today. Very good prices on their lunch specials. The food was good ... had one order of garlic chicken and one order of Mongolian beef. Tried both, liked both. Lunch specials come with a can of soda and a choice of soup or eggroll. It was a good deal. Best part of the whole meal. Egg drop soup was weird texture almost like pudding jelly like. Food came out not even 5 mins after we ordered. Rice and meat did not taste fresh. If I could describe the rice I'd say It tasted like the smell of a farm. My boyfriend ate all his because he doesn't like to waste but I couldn't finish and definitely wouldn't go back. It's all the generalizations that go with being fast-food-American Chinese. Hole-in-the-wall, greasy spoon, divey, etc. A decent and affordable option when needing food but per reviews and my order the other day, I am without doubt that quality changes daily. Solid 3.5 stars. Look at their fried rice for instance. Some say it is fresh and tasty. Others have said it is dry and old. I've mentioned in other FF-American Chinese reviews, when ordering rice its good to tell the counter-person that you'd like the rice "fresh". Which indicates to them, they must add some quantity of water to the wok when reheating rice. Reheating rice?? In most cases fried rice is made in advance. Even up to a few days in advance (as gross as that sounds). With the time it sits stagnant in a rice cooker, all the while it continues to dry out. This rice is reserved for and always served with lunch or dinner specials. It's why they're able to throw the food at you in a manner of minutes. In some rare cases fried rice may be created fresh in-person. This only happens when you make a strict point and request it made in your presence or you've ordered some sort of special fried rice. I.e Shrimp, Happy family (all proteins - beef, chicken, egg, pork, shrimp), etc With lunch specials, if you like your rice to have a fresher appearance you must request it so. In many cases, to keep your business, they will oblige. Not always the case which is why they are regarded as "greasy spoon" type restaurants. Note: If you have already taken this home and feel that the rice is "too dry". Do this: Empty the fried rice into a steamer and steam it. Use only a small quantity of water. If you don't have a steamer, no worries. Empty the fried rice into a frying pan. Top with a few tablespoons of water and heat it at Medium. Once most of the water has evaporated you are done. If you like to reheat your entree, this is a good time to add that to your rice. Reduce the heat and let it sit covered for a few minutes. If you don't mind co-mingling flavors, give the pan a stir once or twice so that it all cooks evenly. I tried them out the other day for the first time grabbing a sizable order for sharing. Ordered two lunch specials with egg roll and chicken fried rice. (There's an option of white, chicken or pork) Also got an order of the fried potstickers and crab rangoon. After placing the order I noticed they had a newer menu with tantalizing photos. On the front cover was a tasty looking chicken dish. So.. the glutton I am, I ordered that as well. The counter-person quoted a 20 minute wait if I really wanted that chicken. I did. So, I waited. How was it? The rice was dry as fuck. I hated it. At the time of my order it was the only one placed. They had just fulfilled some take-out orders and hit a dry spell. There were two employees working. You'd think they could have listened to my humble plea to make the rice more fresh and between them taken the time to prepare accordingly. The entree portions were alright. Beef pepper steak and Kung Pao chicken. The pepper steak was overloaded in green peppers and onions. The Kung Pao had the tiniest shrimps you've ever seen but tasted quite nice. Subtle sweetness with a spicy kick. I had requested both entrees be prepared extra spicy. They obliged with the Pao, the pepper steak neglected any spice. (If you like shrimp, I'd check to see if they offer Jumbo. Pay the $1 or $2 more) I opted not to finish my lunch until it was cooked properly. So, the method I described above is what I administered before we sat down for lunch. I used a frying pan and refreshed the rice and reheated the entree. Everyone was pleased. One comment (from my lunch group) was that we should keep these guys as an lunch option, so long as Jacob is present to reheat the food. Appetizers. Reviews were correct about the Crab Rangoons. These fried pockets are chocked full of sweetened cream cheese with a paltry bit of imitation crab. The fried potstickers were a hit as well. Fresh (for the most part) with a meaty stuffing. Last but not least. The 20 minute, Sweet & spicy chicken wing. The sauce was goooey. Gelatinous. I realize this isn't an attractive word but that is a perfect adjective to describe how the sauce was ladled out of the container. I'm sure the sauce was made with Hoisin because of how salty & sweet it tasted. Much like "Chinese spareribs" which is another staple of FF-American-Chinese food. Although it took 20 minutes to prepare, it's hard to tell why they needed the time. In no way could this go up against the hot and spicy wings offered at Great Seas on Lawrence Ave. These are frozen chicken wings that have been fried and plunged into the thickest, viscous sauce known to man. When biting at the wings, the meat tore away like chicken wire tearing at our gums. Much like the appetizer "Tiger cry". If only they could maintain quality. And, why was the helper clipping fingernails in the kitchen in between frying & cooking. Yuck. read more

Okay so my favorite neighborhood (Linn's Garden) Chinese Take-Out closed, so a friend recommended this place... "HUNAN SPRING" Now there will NEVER be a place that has better eggrolls than Linn's, but this place gets the job done when I'm too tired to cook, don't want pizza (my husband could eat it every night, ugh) and craving some good ole' Chinese. Prices are very reasonable. We only get delivery-and it is FAST!! Our usuals are: Beef Fried Rice, Cashew Chicken, Beef Egg Foo Young, and they have an excellent (and healthy) Steamed Chicken & Veggies (no gravy please!). Pretty good Hot & Spicy Soup, also. I do miss Linn's Garden but Hunan Spring has done well as a close second. read more

I got the general tso's lunch special. It's flavorful. Sweet with a spicy kick, and some broccoli mixed in. I upgraded my fried rice ($1 extra) to have shrimp, rather than pork or chicken. Fried-rice flavorful, not too salty. So worth it! The shrimp are meaty and decent-sized. The special itself was about $6, including the entree, soup/egg roll, and a soda. the amount definitely enough for two sittings. The hot and sour soup was okay... Definitely a good size! I like that their soda selection isn't your ordinary. Pineapple and grape crush! This spot definitely delivers more flavor than bland. A tad on the saltier side, but I'm a little sensitive myself. Help run tower auto rebuilders down the street from here, and man we eat at this spot at least twice a week. If Panda Express had a larger menu, I think you could easily compare it to Hunan Spring. This is clearly Chinese Fast Food. If you were ordering from here to expect something authentic, then it would come as no surprise to me that you were let down. I believe I am a food addict. I try not to discriminate. Hunan Spring leaves me with mixed feelings. First of all, The restaurant seems family owned. Anyone who feels like they have received bad service from this place is right to do so. To be empathetic, I would say that the employees you see working the register or delivering your food are probably not paid what they're worth. I could expand here, but at the risk of anyone thinking that I am forming stereotypes, I am going to leave it alone. The rest of the reviews on here pretty much back up my observations anyway. Aside from what anyone else says, it's decent food. I even think their egg rolls are decent. I've had the following: Shrimp in lobster sauce, sesame chicken, chicken wings, fried squid, Cashew Chicken, and crab rangoon. All of it is decent except for the sesame chicken. It's practically all breading, and it tastes like the orange chicken from Panda Express. The chicken wings, which I had hoped would arrive in a spicy sauce, were just friend chicken wings. Don't bother. The fried squid is my favorite. I think most people might find it gross though. If you have it delivered, then you need to take it out of the box right away. Leaving it in the container will allow it to get soggy. Seriously, open it up as soon as you close the door on the delivery guy/girl. The squid comes with this awesome sweet and spicy sauce that rivals any sweet and sour sauce. I'd almost make the clerks give you a container of that for your egg rolls. If you pick up your order of squid from the restaurant right as it comes out of the kitchen, and you rush it home, it's even crispier. I am pretty relaxed when it comes to these things, but I have to keep it real: One time I did find a thick black hair in my food. I really think the guys in the kitchen are way too comfortable because they are working for family and they don't have to worry about losing their jobs; which probably makes up for the lack of pay. I've even seen the cooks working the kitchen with their street jackets on because there was obviously no heat turned on in the restaurant. Seriously though, they need to keep their hair out of the food. I have gone back since then. I do inspect my food before eating it. I'd advise you to do the same. read more

Absolutely NO! Every time i order from here the chicken taste more like tofu than actual meat. I used to live one block from this place and decided to walk there instead or ordering delivery. Its very small and they have a huge fan blowing in the restaurant, i can only imagine whats being blown into the food. My daughter broke out from the sesame chicken and she is NOT allergic to anything. My Mongolian beef was ok except order it without onions since that is what they fill it with. The chicken fried rice i threw out. once again.... tofu. I would rather spend $10 in delivery fee and tip then order from here agian. read more

Pleasantly surprised by the delicious fixings this tiny restaurant served up; it doesn't exactly exude the kind of ambiance that says "our food tastes great", but it did. As a *mostly* vegetarian, I started drooling at the sight of orange tofu on their menu, and it more than lived up to my expectations. Add to that some delicious green beans and spicy/garlic eggplant, and I was a happy camper. Entrees were all $6.95, and they even threw in a little container of steamed broccoli. My wife and I ordered delivery last night. The crab rangoons looked like they were under a heat lamp all day, they weren't crunchy at all. There wasn't much crab in them either, it was mostly all an odd, liquidy cream cheese. My moo shu pork was 95% cabbage and they forgot the plum sauce. My wife liked her mapo tofu well enough, though. I've finally gotten the chance to review Hunan Springs and give this hole-in-the-wall restaurant much deserved attention! It is great! You just might miss it if you're not paying attention, and it might not look like much from the outside, but don't be afraid! I usually get the Sesame Chicken lunch special (or just for dinner) which comes with pork fried rice, a can of pop and an egg roll all for $5.25! It's a great deal and the food is amazing! The Sesame Chicken is full of flavor and zing (a little more work can be done on the rice though) and the egg rolls are pretty good. Mongolian Beef and Orange Chicken are also great alternatives! Overall, it's a great family run Chinese place, preferably take-out unless you want to eat in at their table and a half! Try it! Don't let appearance get the best of you! read more

Pretty good for the price. I've always had delivery only. We order there pretty often and it's cheap with lots of fresh ingredients. My new fav. is the General Tso Tofu (greasy good but in tofu form, :p) They do not have any fish or Chinese vegetable, but overall, the food is decent. read more

We love this place. We probably order from there about once a month - either pickup or delivery. There's really not a dine-in option as they only have a few chairs. The food is tasty, and theirs a wide variety on the menu - thou we usually stick to the following items: The sweet and sour chicken, schezwan chicken, & orange beef.
