The quality of Hunan's is going down. The last few times I've ordered takeout,   the food was terrible. I always order sesame chicken lunch or combo, one or two extra egg rolls and a small white rice. Like before, the chicken tasted old. It was dry  and tough. Usually I can find some sesame sauce at the bottom of the container, but there was none. The outer egg rolls were overcook and the inside was very mushy. Their egg rolls use to be loaded with cabbage but not this time. Even the white rice was drier than usual. To top it off, there was no soy sauce or sweet & sour sauce included with the meal. BE WARNED! Mediocre food and less than 1 star experience. They know they're one of the only places around town open on Christmas Day and can't keep up with the traffic. I was told for a pickup order it was going to take 25mins so I gave them time to prepare my food and showed up and had to wait another 15mins after I paid cash. Regret that I didn't get a receipt at that time because after 15mins of waiting for my order I asked about it and who knows how long it was sitting on the back counter. I was concerned because there were a handful of other customers waiting for their orders as well. I was given my order and left without a paper trail that I purchased from them. The food was so bad. Tonight I ordered the Won Ton soup and it was salty and bland. No seasoning other than salt. The breading on the sweet and sour shrimp was thick it was doughy and not cooked all the way through. The shrimp were non-existent. The shrimp fried rice was burnt. read more

The quality of the food here has really gone downhill. I first discovered Hunan when I moved to Evanston in 2013, they were just a hole in the wall with barely any sitting room but the food was fresh, tasty, inexpensive and fast. Unfortunately "fast" is the only remaining positive attribute...I ordered the sesame chicken combo dinner with friend rice and an eggroll. The chicken was greasy, tough and tasted reheated and both the fried rice and eggroll were bland, no flavor, just salt and grease. This is not the 1st time I got subpar food from them, I ordered the same combo a couple months back and had the same issue with the chicken not being fresh/obviously reheated. I am so sorry to have to write this. We have been ordering take and dining in at Hunan Spring for ever. Anyway since they opened. That is OVER now. Seems they are cutting corners on the quality of the food and their cooks as well. Hard to mess up egg rolls? They have done it- greasy, soggy stuffed paper towels. General Tso chicken is now also soggy and bland. Their low mein, once a favorite, tasted reheated and the roast pork is very old tasting. The folks who are raving about them do not know any better. No star. Sadly, Hunan Spring has gone down hill and it's as though they are cutting back on ingredients and charging more. I ordered a bowl of vegetarian ramen, paid extra for additional brown mushrooms. When I got home, I had literally, about 6 vegetables and another scattering of inexpensive button mushrooms. It was 45 minutes to closing and the family that runs the business obviously wanted to leave early. My soup was handed to me in an open bag, no napkins, utensils or anything else. Neighbors have said that the quaility has dropped ever since they remodeled. Obviously the cost of that remodel is passed on to the customer in poor quality service and food. They lost a frequent customer. I'd give it zero stars if I could. When I went in, although the restaurant was open, the entire family was sitting down and eating. Purchased a large order for A Christmas gathering. Bad idea. Food was not great. One of my family members called it horrible. I had serious gastrointestinal issues the next day. Beef was pale and not brown. Had the appearance of a frozen Chinese food beef. The fried rice was yellow As if no soy sauce was used to make it. Maybe they forgot the soy sauce. The lo mein was dry. I used to eat here in the late 90's. It was great back then. I gave them two stars because the staff was friendly and the remodel looks wonderful. But I would not come back for the food. Once I had a hair INSIDE my eggroll and didn't eat Hunan Spring for almost 2 years. Then I decided to give them another try. While I waited for my take out I used the restroom and it was on the filthier side of the public bathroom spectrum. Mmm...me and my girl stopped here for some quick weekend takeout - and ended up with some tasty ass crab rangoon and sesame chicken. But first I must offer up a disclaimer - due to a combo of first hand experience and the overhearing of some friend's horror stories we were able to enter all the data into a detailed Excel spreadsheet, rock some nut formulas, and carefully craft the right combo of sure to be edible/hopefully tasty items. And, after reading some of the other reviews, I am oh so grateful. Anyways, the sesame chicken was perfecto - not overly breaded and the sauce was amazing. The crab rangoon was a little heavy on the cream cheese side, but were a kick ass size for the price and def worth it. Oh, and all their customers get a cute little calendar for the holidays. We've been ordering from Hunan Spring for years! The delivery time is always reasonable, and in our recollection, the items delivered correctly. There was ONE time years back when we ordered and everything seemed off, especially our favorite - the Beef Lo Mein - it was really greasy for some reason, but after giving the place a few month respite, we ordered again and they were back on track. We chalked it up to a new chef or change in ownership. Last night we ordered: Fan Tail Shrimp (4 to an order and we got two orders), which was greasy and doughy in a GOOD way. It was everything I expected in a butterflied and slightly pounded shrimp dipped in thick batter and fried til golden brown. Mushroom Egg Foo Young, which is ALWAYS nicely browned on both sides before being slathered in heavy gravy. Of the dishes we've tried, this one does seem to have the heaviest gravy, but I don't have any consistency issues with it and I think it's flavorful. Our friend tried it for the first time and LOVED it. It's a lot like an omelet, only patty-style. Beef & Scallop Hunan Style, which was plenty to feed three people and have leftovers. The beef strips are pounded flat and very tender. The scallops are bay scallops and are plentiful in this dish. We order it frequently and have never experienced it tasting "fishy." A medley of Chinese vegetables in a light sauce round out the dish. General Tso's Chicken, which is another item we always order. The chicken is bite sized (almost popcorn-style) and the breading perfectly crispy and the chicken has always been flavorful and never grizzly. No mystery meat here. The sauce is more of a glaze that is a little spicy, but sweet as well. I always find myself wishing they included more steamed broccoli though. Chicken w/ Curry Sauce, which consists of small, pounded strips of white chicken, onions, and various other Chinese vegetables in a yellow curry sauce. My hubby doesn't care for coconut flavor all that much, but he does enjoy this curry when I order it. Beef Lo Mein, which is a Chinese-style pasta much like a spaghetti noodle. It is very hearty w/ pounded strips of beef and other vegetables tossed together w/ the soft noodles. There is no sauce. The dishes above all came w/ white rice (except the Lo Mein), and the Gen. Tso was a platter that included an egg roll. I'm not a huge fan of egg rolls, but I ordered one extra for our guest. For all food listed, the total was $51.35 before tip. It fed three hungry individuals with a decent amount of leftovers. read more

During the winter, we ordered a couple of our favorite dishes: hot & sour soup, egg rolls, orange beef, chicken with mixed Chinese vegetables. Our dinners arrived cold and the ingredients were not at all fresh. We called to alert the manager, who was not willing to believe our concerns. We resolved to never order again. Now it's July, and we decided to give it another try. Today we picked up lunch of Beef Chop Suey and Moo Shu Pork. While the Beef Chop Suey was okay, the Moo Shu Pork was absolutely inedible! Long strands of greasy pork and old vegetables (mostly thin noodles) were packed in old sauce. The plum sauce was in an an extremely tiny plastic cup and most definitely not enough to dress the four pancakes. The four Almond Cookies were soft and delicious. When we called to express our disappointment with the awful Moo Shu Pork, the manager replied that we're always complaining about the quality of our food. We asked whether he'd like us to spread the word to our neighbors about the unreliable food. He hung up the phone. That's the end of our support of our closest neighborhood Chinese Restaurant. Perhaps when there's a new owner, we'll reconsider. Indeed we're sad because we've been regular customers ever since HUNAN SPRING opened in 2013 in our nearby SouthPoint Plaza at 635 Chicago Avenue in SouthEast Evanston, Illinois. My wife and I absolutely love this place. Yes, I guess it can be an "administrative nightmare" (seems a bit technical and outlandish in describing a busy -- and small -- restaurant), but the food is always, always great. Waits are short, food is hot, fresh, and as authentic as I will want from my Chinese restaurant. I rarely give five stars, but this place is probably a 4.5 and I'm feeling like rounding up, today. Plus, I feel like this place is unfairly beat up for its location, small counter, lack of real dine-in seating, and um, "administrative shortcomings." My wife loves the pork fried rice, which is always hot, always overstuffed into a white to-go carton, and has lots of pork, and thin strips of celery and onion. I always go with the chicken and shrimp Szechuan style. When I order online, I always get it extra spicy and it is perfect. Huge shrimp and thinly cut pieces of chicken, mushrooms, and onion simmer in a chili sauce. Wow! Never been disappointed with this dish. My wife gets the beef and broccoli and is equally satisfied. The beef is fresh, tender, and cut thin enough where you don't need a knife to eat it. It is also served with huge chunks of fresh broccoli. The serving sizes are generous and are always great for reheated leftovers. I know it's a cliche, but this food is nearly as good the next day. We've tried a few others dishes also, but these two are our favorites. Great service, always polite, always quick, and wonderfully fresh. This place kills me. It's so close to my house, and the food is pretty good (not GREAT, but definitely above average). But it is an administrative disaster. Often an angry mob of customers in line, and one frazzled kid behind the counter answering two phones, working two computers, and dealing with annoyed carry out customers. This past week, I arrived at the quoted time to pickup carryout only to be told the order never went to the kitchen. 30 minutes of waiting later I got my food, but the counter guy chased after me because he thought I might have someone else's food. A few days later I arrived and the food was ready this time, but I got home to discover it was someone else's order. So I headed back to the restaurant and waited around This was not the first time either of these problems have happened to me there. So, I guess I'm the idiot for continuing to go back to this place. But the food is good enough that I sure wish they'd get their service together. Proceed with caution, and make sure you've got some time on your hands if you decide to order. read more

I don't get where the bad reviews come from. I used to come to this place before they remodeled when they didn't even have air condition when I came back to Chicago this summer I saw in shock to see how amazing it looked inside. Every time I'm in town I come here because it's perfect. The price is cheap, the place is cleaned, the service is amazing, and the food is just untouchable. The sesame chicken is hands down the best sesame chicken I have ever had. The shrimp with garlic sauce will make you wanna leave that garlic taste in your mouth all day. Haha it's truly that good. I love this place so sad I'm going back home and can't have it all the time. I'm already looking forward to coming back and having this. This has always been my go to place for Chinese food. But the last couple times I have gone my shrimp fried rice and my orange chicken hasn't been the same. The rice wasnt like before it was like it wasnt cooked enough. I know how it was before it just want the same. And the gravy with the egg foo young has changed. I ordered the General Tso chicken lunch special. 1 star awarded for the food being ready when it was promised and the cashier's kindness. However, the rest of the stars are lost due to the poor quality of the food. The rice...let's begin there. It was bland, overcooked or perhaps reheated, and discolored. Then the chicken, which was ordered spicy, had no flavor whatsoever. It was more sweet tasting than anything else. There were only three pieces of broccoli to go along with this meal. The food poisoning I had from Hunan Spring food was so severe, that I was sick for a few days, vomiting non-stop. May be they put poison in the food, or just some toxic rotten food remnants, but the sickness that I experienced visiting this restaurant was unparalleled. I have been on a quest to find great Chinese food in my area ever since my old favourite changed owners & their food went down the drain. I was also poisoned (twice!) by another Chinese place down the street. I tried Human Spring on a whim because my optometrist is next door and I'm glad I did. I have since ordered pick up over a dozen times & delivery once (prompt delivery). I judge a Chinese place based on 3 things: their egg rolls, their wonton soup, and their breaded entrees (like sweet n sour chicken or general tso's). Egg rolls here are 10/10. I've never had better egg rolls anywhere in Chicago. They're big & not frozen and perfectly cooked. If they are in fact frozen then they've totally got me fooled. You can tell they're made in house and don't come from a food service store frozen box. The wonton soup is also good. Nothing special but it definitely isn't bad. Ample dumplings. My sweet n sour chicken is always crispy and never soggy or gummy. Rice is always well cooked. I've tried quite a few things and I have yet to be disappointed. The staff is very nice although sometimes hard to understand. Unless you know exactly what you're ordering, communication will be difficult. I once tried to modify my pick up order over the phone and my order came out weird because something was lost in translation. I didn't make a big deal out of it because the food was good nevertheless. Haven't dined here so can't speak of the in house hospitality . It's a decent looking place but not super fancy. Their lunch specials are awesome! Usually Chinese lunch specials are filled with 75% rice & 25% entree. Here it's the other way around - you get 70% entree plus 30% rice. Best value ever. Plus you get a choice of side. I always have extra food left over from lunch. This place is a great value. Their prices are nearly the same as other Chinese joints yet their quality is far superior. I really don't know how they do it. Maybe the taxes in Evanston are cheaper? They're right on the Chicago /Evanston border. If you want chop sticks make sure you ask for them because they won't be included otherwise. Lots of free parking since this place is in a plaza. read more

This place is about a block from where I live, so I've walked by it many times. Ordered some take-out for the first time a couple of weeks ago. As a disclaimer, I don't particularly like Chinese food, but this was fine for what it is. I ordered 3 or 4 dishes and rice, which turned out to be a lot of food. My bf loved the kung pao chicken and broccoli beef. The egg rolls are too large to be cooked adequately and were pretty mushy and flavorless- I wouldn't order them again. I ordered veggie egg rolls and these definitely contained pork. No big deal, since I eat meat, but beware. I would definitely get take out from here again, when I'm in the mood for Chinese (approximately once every two years). read more

This place is pretty badass! I came in here, unknowingly, at their time of closing. They took our order immediately, and I didn't even know until I looked after the fact at the time and apologized to them. Yet, they were very polite to us and prepared the food pretty darn quickly. Overall, food was standard chinese fare. Good Kung Po Chicken, decent fried rice. Yet, to see people provide a good service like that makes it worth the while to come back and get food here again, as well as being about a 5 minute drive away. read more

We've loved Hunan Spring with our first order, however, the chef must have been changed or something because the last three orders have been awful. This past order was the straw that broke our back. We ordered at 5:25 pm and didn't get our food until 7:20, almost 2 hours late. And when it arrived it was cold, not even lukewarm. Cold. The orange chicken was so sugary, you could almost taste every sugar granule. Plus it was overcooked, so not only was it super sweet, it was hard (and, don't forget, cold). The other item we ordered, Chicken Chow Mein, didn't come with its noodles! The noodles ARE the dish, but what's this? A random order of broccoli? Uh, okay. I don't know what's up over there, but we've done lunch (at work) and a few dinners (at home) and the quality has really gone downhill in the past 6 months or so. We'll be avoiding Hunan Spring until they work out whatever is going on over there with their delivery and chef. read more

We're currently in limbo of finding a good Chinese place. This is not our new pick. One star goes to the delivery guy. Nice, and super fast delivery. Came in about 25 minutes. Another star goes to my sweet and sour chicken. Although, you've seriously failed as a Chinese place if you mess that up. Minus a star for the mongolian beef. It's 98% veggies, which is great and all, but "where's the beef?". Minus a star for the crab rangoons. I LOVE crab rangoons. But there were so strange. I ate 2/6 and had to stop. They're that bad. I have no idea why the rating for Hunan Spring is this low because the food here is AMAZING. I order from here about once a week to get my Chinese food fix because they have shrimp in lobster sauce in the white sauce (not the normal bleh brown sauce) as a combo, but also because they have crab rangoon that are so good that I feel like I should regret eating so many, but I just can't regret something so good. The only awful thing that I've had there is the shrimp toast. Steer clear of that and you should be fine. read more

This place was pretty disappointing. We ordered delivery at 5:45 on a Thursday night, and didn't get our food until 7:15, so pretty much an hour and a half after the order. The egg rolls and fried rice were very bland. And their pepper steak had no flavor what so ever. At first I liked the General Tso's chicken, it was crunchy and flavorful, but after the second little piece, it became too much. It tasted like it was coated in sugar, not breading. It seems where the others lacked flavor, this dish was a bit overwhelming.
