H2. Sesame Chicken

This is far and away the best Asian food for miles around. I come here often and I'm always surprised that it comes out better every time. The lunch special is affordable and always amazing. I would drive an hour to get their sesame chicken. The staff is also so very nice, they make me smile 6/5 stars

Still good food. Going for dinner is much more expensive though. My sweet and sour chicken, shrimp fried rice, egg roll and soda was $21 (including tip).

General Tso's Chicken lunch special

A very long overdue review, but Hunan Spring is my favorite place to go for Chinese food in Evanston. I'm lucky enough to live essentially right next door, and when I want something quick and delicious, there they are! I especially appreciate the lunch specials. About $10 will get you an entree, side of fried rice (which I sometimes sub for white rice), and your choice of eggroll or soup. I usually have enough left over for a second meal later. The owners are extremely nice, food is fresh and delicious, and service has always been very quick for me. Very highly recommend Hunan Spring!

As far as delicious, quick and classic Chinese food goes, Hunan Spring hits it out of the park. I was honestly shocked to see the mediocre reviews. They were a very easy go-to spot for take-out during covid. Online ordering and pick up was a breeze! Now that dine-in is back, I continue to support this business. Service is fast and the food is affordable. The restaurant is very clean and the tables are distanced well. Whenever I'm craving Chinese cuisine, this is a place I can lean on. It's not anything super fancy, just greasy and reliable. Some of my favorite choices are the crab rangoon, general tso's chicken, and any of the lo meins. The entrees come with white rice and the portions are pretty hefty. Whenever I order take-out, I know I'll have leftovers to last the next few days. Definitely give it a try!

Reliability good south Evanston choice for traditional fare with some occasional and Ramon and Dim Sum choices.

Great for everyone- families, couples etc. The service is good - everyone works hard there. Dinner time is busy and they do close at 9pm so you need to be seated by 8pm. These are our favorite dishes there: *Chongqing Popcorn Chicken (it's addictive!) *Eggplant with garlic sauce *Peking Duck Highly recommend this great local spot!!

It was raining and chilly outside so I decided on something soup based and got myself a bowl of rice noodle soup with fatty beef for my protein. For an appetizer, I got the pork belly with garlic sauce. I really liked this because the pork was thinly sliced and the sauce was rich and flavorful. The rice noodle soup was spicy and hot and the serving was plentiful, so I took the rest to go. As for the service, I was the only one in the restaurant and the server was standoffish and was on his phone most of the time. No big deal but I was really peeved when I said I wanted the rest of my noodle soup to go and he just gave a container and a plastic bag. I usually didn't mind packing my own to go but in this instance, the bowl was bulky and I wasn't sure how I was going to transfer the soup without spilling. I wish the server was a little more thoughtful and offered to help but nope, he just went back to his phone. It would be better to just order take out from this place because the dine in experience was underwhelming.

The shallot rice with vegetables had no vegetables at all and tasted as if it was premade and warmed up again in the microwave. The shallot rice with beef was the same and contained tiny bits of burned beef. The sushi was not fresh and the crispy spring rolls were akin to dog treat sticks. The food is expensive and some of the worse food I've ever had. While I appreciate the business owners detailed response, there are contradictions. When ordering the shallot fried rice from the restaurants website on July 2, vegetables were included as an option. Today vegetables have been replaced with herbs. Nevertheless we chose the available vegetable option therefore vegetables were requested. The restaurant received our vegetables request as indicated on the pictured receipt and packaging. We received herbs and rice but no vegetables. We did not order through a third party delivery service. We placed the order through the restaurant website and I arrived early to pick up the food. I hope that the owner is able to receive my feedback constructively and take accountability for the issues my family encountered with the restaurant.

I hadn't been here in probably two years, basically since they moved to the corner location. From…read moremy previous visits, I remembered a huge menu but pretty mediocre, meh food. However, my most recent visit actually changed my impression! My friend suggested Joy Yee for dinner, or honestly I probably wouldn't have thought to come here. She ordered a chicken noodle dish, while I got the eel and shrimp fried rice. The eel fried rice was actually the one good dish I remembered from my previous visits, so I decided to play it safe. We also ordered the fried squid tentacles to share, and those were surprisingly delicious! They were fried until crispy while the squid itself stayed tender, with a really nice scallion and garlic aroma. Definitely the highlight of the meal. My eel and shrimp fried rice was also good. Nothing mind-blowing, but the texture was nicely balanced. The rice had a little moisture to it without becoming soggy, and each grain still stayed nicely separated. I did remember the eel pieces were larger in the past though... My friend liked her noodle dish too. I also used to come here for their avocado smoothie, which comes in an unbelievably jumbo size. It's good and I still recommend it. Service was alright, nothing spectacular but nothing to complain about either. The environment is also much better than their old location just a few steps away. The large windows bring in a lot of natural light and make the whole space feel nicer. This visit was definitely better than I remembered. Glad my friend convinced me to give it another try!

We ordered the lemongrass chicken wings, lemongrass pork chops with garlic noodles, Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce, Japanese tofu with two mushrooms, and beef cubes with eel in tomato sauce over rice. Honestly, there wasn't a bad dish! Everything was really good, and we all enjoyed the food. I'd definitely come back. Service was also wonderful and prompt. There is an 18% service charge for tables with 4+ people, but I'm totally fine with that because the service was top-notch. One last thing -- don't forget to check out the fruit drinks on your way out. You can easily order them on the kiosk.
