I can't say enough good things about China star. They are always prompt. Their food is always delicious and they continue to deliver time and time again. This is the first Christmas. We have ordered here before, and food was OK. Yesterday we ordered food at 7:15 and the food was to be ready at 8pm. I showed up at 10 minutes to 8pm and the restaurant was closed. I walk around to back door as I could see people still inside. They rudely handed me food as if I was bothering them for asking for the food I ordered. I get home 3 minutes later and discover that the rice was burnt and the Orange chicken was ICE COLD. I called owner very next morning and he was rude and dismissive. I really have had it purchasing food from here. When we called, what she quoted me was $3 MORE than the menu price! I called her back and asked her why. I got, "at this time we are charging dollar more per item." WHAT?!?!? I told her to keep it and she actually called me back to NEGOTIATE the food price. I calculated the items and 10.25% Niles tax. Ordered from here and got super sick for two straight days!! Throwing up!! It was the only thing I ate that day so I know it was from this food. BEST Crab Rangoon I've ever had in my life, thus far! In our experience, Chinese delivery is totally hit or miss. This location was neither one. Delivery was fast and even the "small" portions are very big. The sesame chicken left much to be desired. The rice was great. My husband enjoyed the Mongolian Beef. I worked there for 2months as a delivery driver. They barely passed their city inspection. The owners do not like to invest into improving the kitchen restaurant they were forced to buy new containers to store rice etc. their garbage area in the back is disgusting they throw garage one the side of the containers. We've been ordering from China Star for years but we've just had it with the service. Ordered tonight and was told 30-40 mins. Get there and have to wait for them to even talk to me. She looks up my number and says "pay me later". Then proceeds to spend 5 minutes taking new orders on the phone even though my food should be ready and waiting. Then another customer comes in behind me and she takes his money but no food. WTH right ? Then she proceeds to just walk away and make me wait another 10 minutes. Whereupon I left. Went next door to Boobys, got a great meal and in 15 mins was home eating. Been a while since I've been in this restaurant and it's really looking shabby. Reading other reviews here very disappointing. I'm never going back. Really stupid on their behalf. We've probably spent a few thousand on them over the years. This has to be the WORST Chinese food it's ever been my misfortune to encounter! The egg drop soup looked and tasted like colored water with stuff floating in it. The chicken wings smelled foul (no pun intended), the eggroll was tasteless, and after biting into a baby corn it crumbled like stale bread in my mouth. Their "Happy Family" dish should be called "Dysfunctional Family" as it was a mixture of things that would go well if all were fresh and properly cooked, but the combination of undercooked and overcooked items, with some being fresh, and others way past their shelf life was a complete disaster. I took two bites and threw the rest away, feeling quite queasy. I had to take some maalox to settle my stomach. This place has been here for years, but I suspect the earlier years were better ones. This was the first time I'd ordered from here, and DEFINITELY THE LAST! I've had better Chinese food that sat out all day on a buffet. There are plenty of other places in the area for Chinese food. Apparently the manager/head chef has a special sauce he makes every day for the orange chicken. He won't tell me the secret! The lady, called May? Mei? whatever her name is, is very nice! She always tries to talk to you, "How was your day?" such and such. Always giving me a smile when I walk in. She is also very reasonable. If i don't like mushrooms and want more carrots instead, she says it's perfectly fine. Their lunch specials are only 4.95 and the portions are pretty big. They do not have a dining area but they have an area where there is a table, leather couches, and a TV for your enjoyment. It's like eating out, but in your own living room... We like this place for carry out. I guess you could eat there at one of the 3-4 window seats, but that would just be weird. They are terrible. I ordered food to be delivered not even 10 minutes from the restaurant. I was told it would be 45 minutes to an hour to receive the food. I called the restaurant after the hour had past and was told it would be there soon because the driver left 15 minutes prior to me calling. I worked at a company in Glenview that would offer take-out food for their employees, of which they ordered from China Star once a week. Somehow, they were one of the most popular take-outs. How, I don't know. As far as Chinese food goes, CS would be classified as a greasy spoon. I can't say that the food was anything that excited my taste buds. The egg and shrimp rolls were...well...once you get past its dark brown, deep fried exoskeleton, I discovered flavors that were a bit...blandish. The fried rice is one of the dishes that lends to the "greasy spoon" designation. I couldn't even finish the Lo Mein. The sauce was below description. Don't get me wrong, CS is not the worst place to go for Chinese. Not at all. If you need a greasy meal to smother a liquor-laden belly, they'd fit the bill wonderfully (but I'm not sure they are open that late.) I'm not saying my tastes are highly refined, but, dude, if it was down to my left arm or China Star, I think the I'd truly miss my left arm. Pending review Stay away from this place! We ordered the chop suey dinner and the Generals chicken dinner, both including an egg roll and chicken fried rice. First, we were told that delivery was an hour out. An hour and a half (90 minutes) later the driver finally shows up. I open the shopping bag and the egg rolls are stone cold. Chop suey was ok, nothing to write home about but the chicken dish was like a sweet-sour dish, with no spicy or heat at all. I called to let them know and since it was now later, I asked for a credit and got a major argument from the owner. Finally, he agrees to issue the credit for the dish BUT only if he gets it back! Honest Opinion: I am a Chinese man who takes pride in eating authentic Chinese foods. I have been to many restaurants where the food doesn't taste like my grandmother's cooking but this restaurant convinced me to become a loyal fan of the American style cuisine. The Chinese food here is AMAZING. On days when my wife is off or doesn't feel like cooking we order delivery. It arrives plus or minus ten minutes of the promised time which is no big deal because the food comes hot to us and we live twenty minutes away. My favorites here are the stuffed crab rangoon (which is generous with the cream cheese), the Mongolian beef (my favorite), shrimp fried rice, chicken chow mein, and the egg rolls. All of the portions are large (even the "small ones") and items are cheap compared to the other places I've been to. I look forward to eating from this place every Saturday night. I don't know why people review it so low. I love this place. I don't know why I haven't found it earlier in it's 18 years of existence. (Oh yeah, the fried chicken wings are AWESOME) read more
