My late grandmother used to love coming to China Chef and bringing my entire family here when we were kids. I went here recently as an adult to get the nostalgic feel, and it hit instantly when I walked in... I see the Chinese decor, the zodiac paper under the plates, the koi fish tank, and the smell of authentic Chinese food. The food overall was decent; I really enjoyed getting the fried chicken, lumpia, and egg rolls. Some of the noodles dishes and vegetables dishes we got were a little too mushy for my liking and a little bit too drenched. Overall though, I still liked the food, and it's a good price for doing family style. I do enjoy the fact that they have a parking lot, and the server was very friendly when it came to taking our order and making sure we had everything we needed. China Chef has been a favorite of our family's for about 30 years. We had decided to order carry out for Christmas Day and ordered a couple days ahead. We knew that this is one of their busiest days and we weren't surprised by the number of customers coming and going with carry out orders. I've been eating here for over 40 years. While the faces may be different the food and the decor hasn't changed at all. As far as I'm concerned they are the best Chinese restaurant still open in the Chicago area. The service is always friendly and efficient whether it was Louie 40 years ago or the old guys there today. As always the Mongolian beef is my go to entree. The won ton soup is a must and the egg rolls are classic Chicago with baby shrimp, bbq pork and that hint of peanut butter in a crispy fried won ton wrapper. If you order the lunch special there's way more food than you can eat. If there are two of you and you both want the same thing I'd probably just order off the menu and get the beef, soup and egg rolls. As well as a pork fried rice if steamed rice isn't your thing. I forgot to take pictures of most of the food because it was that good! Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor -- you can really taste the quality and care in every dish. The portions were generous, and the service was friendly and quick. I did manage to snap a picture of the sesame balls for dessert -- perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and chewy inside, and not overly sweet. The best way to end an amazing meal. We used to live in nearby Skokie 40 years ago and dropped in here once.  Well, China Chef is still at it, and kudos to them for that!  They do have new ownership as of about 6 months ago, and that would be Jennie Moy, also the restaurant manager, and her husband.   Anyway, we had a big Saturday night dinner for an extended family party of 11.  We ordered their Dinner Special #2 set menu (see photos for itemization of the 11 offerings), $198.98, and advertised for 10-12 people.  And it was all plentiful and delicious and we still had plenty of leftovers.  I'll go with 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for our fun and delicious outing.   They have a huge Cantonese style menu but also a page full of Filipino dishes.  The dishes can range from Americanized to authentic Cantonese and somewhere in between (but mostly close to authentic) depending on what you order.  The value here is very good, and pretty close to Chinatown value except you're still in the suburbs with no commute.  The restaurant is quite large with two dining sections as well as a big party room.  When we left, the party room was totally filled for some sort of celebration dinner for maybe 80 people.  They also have a fairly big parking lot that was totally filled.  The whole restaurant was vibrant and bustling and I didn't realize it was that locally popular actually.  Anyway, the festive atmosphere made for a fun dinner outing and that was worth a partial star.  They also appeared to be doing a huge amount of carryout business. I liked all the dishes but my favorites tonight were the seafood soup, the whole steamed fish, Mongolian beef, fish with lobster sauce, crispy fish fillet, and the combination fried rice.  Overall, big thumbs up, and we plan to be back sometime. read more

We ordered the dinner for 5-7. Everything that was included was good; chicken, pancit, mongolian beef, and the soup. The lumpia shanghai was the only disappointment. Definitely plenty of food for our family of 5. I would have preferred to have the fried rice to come out before the main meats but it showed up last so we ended up having a lot of that left over. We put an advance order in for Christmas Day. When arriving there at the specified time, the place was completely crowded and disorganized. When I finally got to talk to somebody, they couldn't find the order in their system at all. A manager eventually found the slip of paper with our order on it, and went back to the kitchen, then never came back to talk to me at all. After 40 minutes of waiting after when I was supposed to have a pickup order ready, I just left. The new ownership rocks! Saturday nights are busy. The restaurant was full and lots of carry out orders. They have their own parking lot, but street parking is also fairly easy to find. The food is Cantonese style with Filipino dishes too. It's really nice to have a Cantonese restaurant with set menus for large parties in the suburbs without going to Chinatown. There's also a large, clean fish tank with healthy koi fish to entertain all. Best of all, they were able to cater to our peanut, tree nut, and sesame seed allergies. Was China chef bought? Do they have new owners? I've been coming here since I was a kid, over 40 years. The food has changed. Everything is saucy and mushy for the wrong reasons. The Mongolian beef used to be fire, stir fried. It was so saucy!!! The pancit guisado has been using thinner noodles, which doesn't seem to hold up to all the ingredients. It's like instant ramen noodles. It was more like a soup. It did not taste good. Even the fried rice was mediocre. All the food seemed to be overcooked and mushy. I think I'm just gonna start going to a hole in the wall by my house. The food taste so much fresher. I suggest rehire the cook. Something is wrong. read more

There's is absolutely Nothing wrong with China chef. The food is fine and prices are fair. But and this But is just with me - I use to go here back in the early 80s Before they move to this location when they were on Dempster St with Art Fong ( see previous review) Now Art is long gone, the menu is the same but the dishes are not. The sweet and sour pork is heavily breaded and the meat is lean. It used to have some fat/marbling that made it extra tasty. The pata tim was drowning in sauce as opposed to be complemented by it. It's been a long time between visits but we were craving Filipino and Chinese food. We ordered fried chicken skins, beef lo mein, and beef with ampalaya. The only thing good was the chicken skins. The person who took our order tonight we said beef with tofu. Not great. Not fatal my husband said he's eat it. But the beef in both dishes was sub par and the chowmein was made with some sort of too sweet teriyaki sauce that tasted awful. I keep forgetting the photo and so i keep forgetting to review this place. Tgis is the place i go to if i want Siomai aka pork dumpling. I also love their Shrimp Lo Mien. The Shrimp dumpling and Seafood dumpling is good also. Today however I ordered only the Siomai, Shrimp Lo Mien, Mapo Tofu, and something called Ho Sai Guy. Let me explain the Ho Sai Guy. Its Chicken breast with shrimp and some veggies. Their Lo Mien you choose what you wanna put in it. Mine is always shrimp. I like it because its not covered in Veggies. My relatives frequent this place a lot, so the staff made jokes and talked to them. They've got two rooms of seating. Lots of people dine in but I saw a lot of people coming in to pick up their order. They've got both Chinese and Filipino food here. There were 9 of us. My uncle ordered the meal that feeds 6, but it was more than enough! They gave us hot green tea in the beginning as well as a wonton type soup with shrimp and veggies. It also came with an appetizer of fried chicken, shrimp chips, and calamari. We shared a mixture of things: noodles, fried rice, white rice, sweet and sour pork, beef, veggies, crab, fish. I could be missing a few of the dishes but it was a substantial amount of food! The total was below $30. Not bad! Staff was nice and took plates as soon as we were done. They gave us refills on our tea and packed up the leftovers for us. They've got men's and women's bathrooms. Multiple stalls. There's a fun fish tank with huge fish ( maybe koi) in there! Met my brother, his wife, and my sister for a late lunch on Sunday here at the China Chef. My girlfriend and I arrived 1st and the place was about 75% full at 4:00 on a Sunday. We were greeted by a friendly and obviously hard working guy who asked us if we would want a table or booth. My girlfriend said table, but I said BOOTH ...... So after being shown to our table, we were quickly served piping hot tea as we watched the rest of our party arrive. We all had egg rolls (tried both regular with meat and shrimp and vegetable) which were hot, fat, aromatic, and crispy as a dried leaf. They've got everything in them including the peanut butter. Man'o man were they good! Do not pass up the egg rolls. Our waiter was a middle aged gentleman with a fantastic sense of humor that complemented his attentiveness and fast pace, can't say enough about how good he was. I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say a great meal becomes a phenomenal meal when the server is great. And that was the case at China Chef. I had General Tso's Chicken (ordered non spicy), and is was bombdiggity. I got a huge portion of crispy and flavorful, deep fried, bite size pieces with an awesome sauce. My brother had Chow Mein that he said was "as good as I've ever gotten." Although, my bro is an egg roll connoisseur and he was in love. He ordered a few to take home. The girls had beef with peapods and they all gave thumb's up. Prices are reasonable, atmosphere was old school dark wood booths with a lot of space. My sister and brother all came down from Lake Zurich, but we live about 10 min away and since we've lost faith in our favorite place (new ownership has meant bad food), girlfriend and I have a new carry out spot. Well this is the first time going to this Chinese Filipino restaurant. Anyways despite the old traditional Chinese decor it was a descent restaurant. I never heard certain Filipino pancit dish but it was delicious. The soup that I never heard of is decent. I thought it was won ton soup. I have a lot to remember. I couldn't really give it 4 stars because I have experience better Canton Chinese restaurants in Chicago and elsewhere. At the same time it's not bad. I would come back here every now and then but for anyone reading about this it was decent.
