Tsing Tao has been our family restaurant for the past 44 years. Since the new management took over, it felt difficult to go back -- almost like seeing your ex-girlfriend in someone else's arms. Last week, I finally gathered the courage to visit. I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised. The place looks beautiful under the new management -- the renovated restroom, the new bar, and most impressively, the fine and authentic Chinese antiques that give the space such character. I've even been receiving calls from some of our old regulars telling me how good the food is. Not as good as mine, of course -- but still very good! Please keep up the great work. I visited this restaurant on Mother's Day with my extended family. The man working there that day was very pleasant and helpful and quite impressive actually. He handled the entire front of the restaurant by himself! And the service was great. We ordered several dishes to share family style: shrimp toast, crab rangoon, shrimp fried rice, orange chicken, walnut shrimp, Mongolian beef, and Singapore noodles. Everything was delicious. We came here on Mother's Day with a last minute reservation group of 8. The food was great the service was great and I'll be going back hopefully soon. Everything we had was delicious. We got Mongolian beef, honey walnut shrimp, shrimp toast, orange chicken, and shrimp fried rice. Everything came out quick. The server was very nice to our kids. Wow un-effing believable. DO NOT GO HERE! I knew they were gonna be under new management but I didn't expect it would be under new mismanagement. Been coming here for prob 20+ yrs and tonight came here on a Saturday night at 7:30 and was told by the super condescending non Asian host (totally corporate now) "I'm sorry but we can't seat you because we're too busy and Robert is the only one waiting tables (like it's our fault)." She then added, "I hope you try us again some other time." Seriously? Was she trained at some kennel academy? Um new management: red flag! We love asian food. It is an often go to for our take out dinner. The menu from Tsing Tao looked very interesting . Some dishes were interesting, you might say exciting. My wife really liked the lamb. Others seemed to be reinvented, but not for the better. Pot stickers, or the closest thing we could find to pot stickers, were just off. Kung Pao Chicken, my favorite and goto dish, was very different from the many other KPC I have had. Spice mixture was strange and I did not find it tasty. Bottom line - you might like it or you might hate. Not a "safe" choice but an adventurous one. read more

They were closed for a while, but re-opened recently. Had dinner for 2 on Saturday evening. Not crowded or noisy. Service was prompt and polite. The quality of ingredients and taste of the dishes we ordered was some of the best mandarin food we have had in years. Prices were fair and we look forward to returning. read more

Stopped in before a local trip early, so few patrons. Server was very helpful, left us alone until we were ready to order. Wine and eponomously named Tsingtao beer before dinner. We ordered egg rolls -- excellently crunchy -- for apps. Dad said the Mongolian beef was the best -- good flavor on the beef, seared well. I had the spicy Tsing Tao chicken -- spicy but not ridiculous (don't eat the small red peppers) and vey tasty. Others had shrimp fried rice and veggie chop suey, and were pleased. Went thru three pots of hot tea, almond cookies for dessert and leftovers to take home. As we left, the dining room filled with folks. The only thing wrong-- their kitchen was not able to make Egg Foo Young, the server was apologetic. I hate to take a star off, should be more like 1/4 star. Did not seem like their fault. This place has been open forever; I don't know what people see in it. It had been about ten years ago since I last tried it and was craving Chinese tonight and figured, hell let's give them another chance. Big mistake. Everything we ordered was "off." The primary flavor was: salt. Bland flavors with lots of salt. Even the fried rice was flavorless. I am shocked that this place has the same Yelp rating as Peppercorns. I just don't know how to explain this. Peppercorns is far superior with virtually anything you order and the prices are about the same. read more

It's been years since I've been here. Ordered two dishes, one chicken and one beef. The description of both was so good I ordered both. Unfortunately they were flat. Maybe it was just an off day. The chicken dish lacked veggies and had the tiniest pieces of chicken I've seen. So small I needed a spoon to get at 'em since I could barely spear it with a fork. Classic Mandarin at affordable prices. Family run for at least two generations and friendly, family service. Potstickers, House made, best I've found in my travel, though be prepared for a more doughy and meaty dumpling, versus what normally passes for Potstickers. Mu Shu pork most excellent, and don't skip the soup either (won ton, hot and sour, egg drip all good). Mongolian beef another family favorite, and for the kids: check out off-menu Richard's Chicken--a sweeter, non-Spicy Orange Chicken, and if you are lucky, Richard himself will come out of the kitchen to say hi. Caveat: I've only been here for potstickers and a couple lunch specials, so my exposure to Tsing Tao is still pretty limited. Plus I've only come during Covid-times. The food here is good, fresh, and pretty well priced considering the area, and is especially affordable for the lunch specials (available Tuesday through Saturday). It's not authentic Chinese per se, but it's still good food - cooked fresh, without a ton of grease, good portions, good flavor. Potstickers: 6 in an order, comes with a garlic light soy sauce. These seem homemade - the filling is flavorful but there isn't a ton of it, and really should have more considering how much dough there is per potsticker. The skins with these potstickers are thick, definitely thicker than I'm used to, but it has a good chew. It's a little on the expensive side, but worth it if you have a craving. Princess chicken: Similar to kung pao chicken but less spicy. There are peanuts, chopped chicken, mushrooms, green peppers, all in a delicious semi-spicy, flavorful sauce. The lunch special comes with a scoop of fried rice and your choice of an egg roll, crab rangoon, or fried chicken wing. I got the egg roll which was a good size with a lot of filling, but a bit on the salty side. Since it was a to go order, the skin was a little softer than I'd like but was probably pretty crispy when first fried. The thing I like about the lunch special is that they don't give you a ton of rice with only a little of the actual entree, they give you mostly entree, which makes it a fantastic deal. Beef & broccoli: Pretty good! This tastes fresh, not greasy, and has both broccoli, tender sliced beef, and sliced bamboo shoots. All the veggies soaked up the sauce, which is just how I like my veggies: flavorful and saucy. I'll continue to come back to try their other items, especially since there aren't that many other Chinese options in the area. Everyone I've met at the door when picking up my orders are nice and efficient. Hope to one day come back when dining in is an option again! read more

I have tried many many other Chinese restaurants on the North Shore and keep coming back to this one. I even moved to Glenview and I've tried ones in Niles in Morton Grove and still come back to Tsing Tao. They by far have the best egg foo yong I have ever had and the same goes for their fried rice! Prices are reasonable they have a great lunch specials and I'm not sure who said the food is not flavorful because I disagree. We had never visited this restaurant before last night and wow, it was fantastic. Our server, Justin, couldn't have been more gracious or accommodating to our needs, despite having to cover many other customers. My wife asked if he ran track, and yes, he used to be on the team in school. We asked for his chicken recommendation and he clued us in to a wonderful dish called Flower chicken. Tender white meat, simple vegetables and a delightful, light sauce. All the food was fresh and flavorful, the atmosphere was relaxing on a busy Sunday evening and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. We will be back. read more

I FINALLY found a good place! I got their string beans--DIVINE-- oh - so - fresh-- al dente--and seasoned with a mild spice that made it not only unique-/ but DIVINE! Pass on the crab Rangoon-- the winter ton is a bit too heavy. I got the shrimp and lobster sauce- FINALLY-- real large shrimp that TASTE like shrimp-- and CREASH veggies-- sweet carrots-- peas -- not over cooked- and water chestnuts-- crunchy-- and slightly sweet-- NOT from a can. Not enough egg-- I got over it! It was delicious! They don't have brown rice-- again-- I got over it. I can not sing my praises high enough for Tsing Tao. We have a tradition of hosting all our extended family post high school graduation dinners here as it is a crowd favorite. Last night the staff raised the bar even higher. Not only is the food consistently great, and I will state that Richard's chicken is now my personal favorite, but the staff went above and beyond to ensure that we had a great experience.
