Take out food is pretty good, no complaints here. BUT you have to wait like 10 minutes for someone to come out of the kitchen to take your order even if there is no one else waiting. Not a deal breaker but sure is a pain. read more

All entrees come with a take-out carton of white rice. I think the large entree comes with a large take-out carton of white rice. Large portions, fresh, and delicious! The Kung Pao Shrimp, Garlic Chicken, and Szechwan green beans are spicy, but not too spicy. Shanghai Garden on Vernon in Glencoe is open on Christmas Day, which is nice. Mostly a take- out restaurant, but there is 1-2 booth seating for 4. This was my first time in Glencoe to watch a show at Writer's Theater, and I stopped by this place for a meal before the show. It seems to be the only Chinese restaurant in the entire town and also one of the few places both open at night and relatively affordable. My friend and I ordered the Walnut Shrimp Special and Sauteed Green Beans. We were told it would take 30 minutes, so we sat inside to wait, and the food came out right on time and piping hot. You can't dine in the restaurant though, as they don't have a dining license. 9 times out of 10, Chinese takeout will always hit for me, and Shanghai Garden was no exception. The green beans were flavorful and well-sauteed. The walnut shrimp had a nice crispy texture, tangy taste, and also came with broccoli and crispy noodle pieces. The portions are large for the price and they also included a large box of rice with our order. For just $15 per person, we had a good amount of leftovers. This is a delicious no-frills Chinese takeout place. I've tried many of the lunch specials and Mongolian Chicken is my favorite so far but they've all been pretty good. Good portion sizes -- I split one order into two meals. Sometimes they go heavy on the sauce. Service is always prompt and friendly. Typical chinese restaurant ambiance with tasteful decor, plants, old magazines, and one table that you can eat at if you really want to but I'm sure they prefer you take your food and go. From all the reviews I was forewarned about the inordinate amount of time from order to pickup. I didn't experience that but got the food pretty quickly made. Pros: fried tempura shrimp were good, crispy and flavorful. But then again, how do u F up fried food. Beef with broccoli was tasty and had lots of fresh, and not over cooked veggies. Kudos to this. Cons: pot stickers were gummy and had too much dough. Filling was meh. Chicken fried rice was unappealing and not enough veggies. Not one bean sprout in site. Ordered for pickup. Husband was wanting Chinese: ordered potstickers, egg rolls, orange "beef," some noodle and "chicken" and the eggplant dish. We filled our plates, and were VERY disappointed. The meat did not taste like meat...maybe some ground up version. Anyway, we tied it all up in a plastic bag and threw it away. Tasteless as well even though covered in sweet sauces. I was a little worried about them when they first opened and I stopped in on a Sunday evening to order a won ton soup (nothing else). They informed me it would be a few hours...for soup! A few days later I called at 4:30pm for a Friday night dinner and they had it ready by 5:15pm. And then several weeks later (this evening) I called at 5:30pm and they told me my order, which included way more the soup, would be ready in just 15 minutes. So I think they have their service issues under control..phew! I've yet to find amazing Chinese food in Chicagoland, but I actually think their food is pretty good. I've now tried a few different things on the menu and everything is tasty. My go to healthy option is the shrimp and broccoli. And my husband is really liking the (not as healthy) mongolian beef. I"m thrilled to have another good takeout option in the hood and love that they also have some healthy options on their menu! read more

The food was delicious. It was just not clear about their menu; there were none at the restaurant so there were discrepancies between what I saw online and what I was told I could order. This is possibly the most disappointing restaurant experience of my life. I used to come Chin's on a weekly basis and was crushed when they shut down. I was intrigued when the space was taken over by another Chinese restaurant, and I loved the fact that the entirety of their redo consisted of removing Chin's dead house plants. I'm serious. I just want things to stay the same. So I yelped Shanghai garden and discovered that the new owners did not consider customer service part of the dining experience. I was disappointed but I made my peace and bid farewell to Chin's. Fast forward two years and my friend, another native Glencoan insisted I stop bitching about Chin's and try Shanghai Garden. "The food is exactly the same" he dared to say. My previous order at Chin's was almost always Cantonese noodles and pot stickers. I don't remember the price for the stickers, but the noodles were 0.75c. And this was until like 2017-28. I think it was the best food value on the north shore, and it was delicious to boot. This time I ordered the crispy noodles (Cantonese is no longer an option) and potstickers. The noodles were from a can. Hard, dry, nasty. Can't say I've ever had a good canned noodle. Some might say this is something which just shouldn't exist. The potstickers were all about the dough. Not good. So congratulations Shanghai Garden. You took over one on my favorite restaurants, kept the decor and menu basically the same, but holy shit you managed to mess it up. Chin's just died for me the second time. read more

Let's be honest - there's no real outstanding Chinese food up in the North Shore. However, after trying a lot of places, this is the least worse. Compared to other restaurants, it wasn't overly greasy. The food was decent. No real complaints about the quality, per se. The pricing was just confusing, as everything on the receipt said "custom price" and seemed rather expensive. Plus I think the sesame chicken I ordered wasn't on the menu, so they just slapped a price to it. I also asked for 4 dumplings, and they gave me 4 ORDERS...of 10 each. 40 in total. I feel so unbelievably mixed about this restaurant. The food we ordered was very good. However the order was ready about 55 minutes after the promised pick up time. 6 different people sat around waiting with me. It was a Tuesday night. I suspect there is 1 cook in the back with 1 pan and 1 woman in the front who pitches in by packing the food. The food is good because it is freshly made. They obviously are not precooking. They need a better system. Most people who are picking up live nearby. If they texted me with a 5 minute warning before it was ready, I wouldn't have wasted an hour of my life. I would not have been mad. I could have even waited it out at comfortable guildhall down the road instead of standing by the front desk. This reminds me of a college expression "I'll buy, you fly" where you would pay for the round of drinks but your friend would fight their way to the bartender. If I could find a friend to "fly", I would be back much sooner because the food really is good. read more

Wow, the reviews do not match our experience. We really wanted the KungBao Chicken - and ordered it. Unfortunately, it was as tasteless as anything I have probably ever eaten in my entire life. It was exactly the same as the other chicken dish we ordered - chicken with Broccoli. Even a little self administered red pepper flake couldn't wake up the dish. I searched in vain for the typical red pepper pods - and nothing. If possible, the steamed pot stickers were worse. The outer dumpling was so thick it could have been an empanada. In fairness, the tiny amount of pork filling was well flavored. We had never tried Shanghai Garden in our 25 years on the north shore and we hope to never return. read more

The prices are amazingly reasonable and the food is all really good. The one fairly large problem they have is they have no idea how to manage a kitchen. They'll tell you your order will be ready at 7 and it won't be ready until 7:45. You'll be waiting with many other confused patrons for your food. They need to hire another person to help manage the kitchen and get the orders ready. The fact that I'm still giving it 4 stars and keep going here and waiting long waits speaks to how good the food is though. read more
