We ordered the Kung Pao shrimp, Garlic chicken, Szechwan green beans, Crab Rangoon, Vegetable fried rice, Chicken potstickers, Singapore rice noodles, and Mongolian beef. All entrees come with a take-out carton of white rice. I think the large entree comes with a large take-out carton of white rice. Large portions, fresh, and delicious! The Kung Pao Shrimp, Garlic Chicken, and Szechwan green beans are spicy, but not too spicy. Shanghai Garden on Vernon in Glencoe is open on Christmas Day, which is nice. Mostly a take- out restaurant, but there is 1-2 booth seating for 4. Posting new menu photos to update on Yelp since I was looking at older menu photos and it is always helpful to see a recent menu.

    Walnut Shrimp & Green Beans

This was my first time in Glencoe to watch a show at Writer's Theater, and I stopped by this place for a meal before the show. It seems to be the only Chinese restaurant in the entire town and also one of the few places both open at night and relatively affordable. My friend and I ordered the Walnut Shrimp Special and Sauteed Green Beans. We were told it would take 30 minutes, so we sat inside to wait, and the food came out right on time and piping hot. You can't dine in the restaurant though, as they don't have a dining license. 9 times out of 10, Chinese takeout will always hit for me, and Shanghai Garden was no exception. The green beans were flavorful and well-sauteed. The walnut shrimp had a nice crispy texture, tangy taste, and also came with broccoli and crispy noodle pieces. The portions are large for the price and they also included a large box of rice with our order. For just $15 per person, we had a good amount of leftovers. Overall great value, tasty food, generous portions, friendly service-- I would love to return if I'm in the area again! -- Price (relative to peers): 4.5/5 Food: 4.5/5 Ambience: N/A Service: 5/5 Overall Value: 4.5/5

Plate of chicken fried rice, beef broccoli, pot sticker, and shrimp

So my neighbors raved about this place. I won't be taking on their suggestion however as much as I love them LOL. From all the reviews I was forewarned about the inordinate amount of time from order to pickup. I didn't experience that but got the food pretty quickly made. Pros: fried tempura shrimp were good, crispy and flavorful. But then again, how do u F up fried food. Beef with broccoli was tasty and had lots of fresh, and not over cooked veggies. Kudos to this. Cons: pot stickers were gummy and had too much dough. Filling was meh. Chicken fried rice was unappealing and not enough veggies. Not one bean sprout in site. I so wanted to patronize this establishment as the lady at the counter was hussling to get all the pickup orders and she was friendly enough. Unfortunately I still need to keep searching. One reviewer said there's no such thing as good Chinese food on the North Shore. I think he's right!

Great value, great service, get two days of dinners from one order. I would recommend the orange chicken and the Mongolian chicken.

The food was very bland, had no flavor. The pot stickers were doughy and soft (even after I asked for well done).

Now for the update. For years I considered this modest restaurant a highlight. The staff was cool…read moreand efficient. Ordering was a breeze and the guys were always open to a conversation or giving suggestions. The restaurant was clean and the meal was always tasty. Just a note but the further away you move from any major city the fewer and harder it is to find great Asian food. The suburb is lucky to have them. The pandemic brought new staffing. Some were pleasant with customers though one lady, a supervisor had the wrong ideas of what customer service and proper etiquette is. Just the basics of my final visit. I took my family for lunch. We ordered lunch specials and a couple extra must-try plates. Two specials hit the table and the third was left waiting for her meal. Unbeknownst to us in the moment, her food was handed to a single patron there for his lunch. The place was filling up with a lunch rush but not so many that had complicated orders. Many were ordering similar lunch specials. Kung pao lunch special was popular. When her order finally arrived the supervisor realized she had given the wrong plate to the customer sitting some tables behind us. Mind you ten minutes had already passed. She quickly went over to him and asked what he had ordered. She then took the plate he was eating from and handed him the fresh plate. He was still holding a half eaten egg roll in his hand. Then she brought the quarter eaten plate and placed it in front of my mother. Before she could leave I stopped her and asked her what she was doing. She simply stated that was her lunch order. I told her she handed my mother someone else's food that they were eating and I watched the whole thing. Why didn't you take that to the back and make a completely new plate of food?! I paid the bill and got the F**k out. That's gross. Also, you gave the other patron new food but cannot do the same for our table?? This place is dead to me. If she could do that, it beckons the question of what else is happening behind the scenes.

Strong ratings for the food…read more Ordered takeout (it's been a few years...) and was pleased. Big portions, delicious chicken Pad Thai, delicious spicy green curry with tofu, and a side of only ok (and kind of cold) pork and beef dumplings. Forgot our side of peanut sauce. Happens... Service with a snarl, though. Walked in and there was one table eating, one employee sitting...and one takeout order (mine) sitting next to the register. He didn't look up or even flinch. Finally came, asked for my phone number, and shoved the order across the counter. No thank you or other acknowledgment. Sorry to be an inconvenience... The song in "A Chorus Line" was "Dance Ten, Looks Three." My takeout review is "food good, service rude." But the food WAS good...and the portions large. Lots of leftovers.

***Update: As you can see, the owner has decided to reply unprofessionally to my review, rather…read morethan reaching out to solve the issue. I'll let his response to my concerns speak for itself. My family has been coming to this restaurant for years, which makes this experience not just disappointing, but very upsetting. We placed a pickup order totaling over $100. When I arrived, I was told our order had been given to another customer. Instead of immediately apologizing and remaking the food, the front desk employee spent several minutes trying to find the order, then called the customer who took it and asked him to come back with the food so it could be given to me. This is an obvious food safety issue. Once food leaves a restaurant, it should never be redistributed. When I calmly said I was not comfortable taking food that had already gone to someone else's home, the employee argued with me extensively, insisting it hadn't been touched. I had to repeatedly ask for the food to be remade. When the other customer returned, the employee made a pointed comment that the food would be thrown away "because we have to remake it," while looking directly at me. This felt accusatory, uncomfortable, and inappropriate, especially since the mistake was not mine. After waiting over 40 additional minutes, I was still charged the full amount. When I politely asked whether there would be any consideration for the delay, I was told, "No, we already lost money on you." Being spoken to that way after showing patience and understanding was shocking and deeply unprofessional. Unfortunately, the situation did not end there. When we later called, the same employee refused to provide a manager or owner's contact information, and refused to let us speak with a manager. We asked the employee for her name and she replied "What's YOUR name and what's your problem?" That comment alone reflects a serious lack of professionalism. We emailed management twice to address what happened and have received no response. Mistakes happen, but what is unacceptable is arguing with customers about food safety, making them feel blamed for expecting safe food, speaking to them disrespectfully, and then ignoring follow-up. Management should take this feedback seriously, because this experience reflects poorly on their business. We are very sad to no longer be customers of PNS after many years of enjoying their food.
