Bare looking place in the middle of downtown Glenview. It sure doesn't look like much, and the food is just as plain. Kim's Chop Suey is a carryout only place, as it's way too small to eat there. After looking around it you wouldn't want to do that anyway. The place has the charm of a funeral parlor, so take it to go if you actually place an order. A pretty boring looking place with only a couple tables and a few chairs. It's currently only doing carryout, so all orders are to go. They're pretty fast here though. Maybe too fast. The food we got didn't look done enough, and it looked like shit. Has no flavor. We got the Tofu With Vegetable lunch special. It's about $7 so it's cheap. The best thing about it. Plain and boring. This didn't even look like there was a sauce. It was like plain tofu almost. Took a few bites and threw it out. Fucking gross. The vegetarian choices are limited. Has some pretty gross looking food. Decided last minute to grab some food and OMG so freaking tasty!!!! I did read the reviews and seriously this place is a gem.

I swung by before bubble tea for a quick meal. For ~$7, I got a HUGE carton of delicious shrimp fried rice. It was steaming hot and flavorful and absolutely hit the spot. You can tell there is a lot of love in the food as it is owned by a sweet older couple. Definitely would recommend having this place for take-out! read more

The food is not good. Fried rice is awful. We ordered moo shu chicken and shrimp among many other items. They sent flour tortillas you would get from a Mexican restaurant. These are not what you should get with moo shu. It's a little insulting and clearly not as described in the menu. I called and they unapologetically admitted that's what they serve. I was in Chicago at hotel and they deliver. I spoke with them in the phone. Very kind. Do I don't know what it actually looks like. Delivery guy was kind too. I really wanted Cantonese food. This seemed like the closest option for this craving. I grew up in Japan and we had a very sweet woman from Canton Province. She used to cook for us and always made my favorites. Went there for the first time. Ordered my food. As I was waiting could hear the guy in the back coughing all over and spitting up flem. I wanted to leave. It was beyond disgusting. There was no way I could have eaten the food. I didn't ask for a refund, which I should have. Left and threw it in the nearest garbage. I am completely biased but Kim's is THE BEST Chinese food in the Chicagoland area. I grew up in Glenview and this was the spot to go for the deep fried Chinese goodness. If it was my birthday as a kid and I had my choice, Kim's would be on the menu. For a business to stand that long a test of time, well it's really saying something. But even more amazing is that my aunts & uncles all grew up going to Kim's, too. Kim's has been at 1816 Glenview Road since 1966. Yes, that's right - nearly 50 years. When in the world is there ever a Chinese spot that's been open 50 years!? Apparently the original owners daughter went to school with my Aunts/Uncles so this is some legit Glenview history. The current owners have been at it for about 15 years and are super nice, but more importantly make delicious food at great prices. Kim's makes the dish I would want as my last meal - Honey Chicken. It's a beastly dish slathered in a thick honey sauce that contains gobs of mayo & I'm sure every unhealthy ingredient you could think of. But man, is it good! Honey Chicken from Kim's is my favorite meal of all time. The sesame chicken is so different and delicious, as well. It's smaller chicken, all perfectly cooked, all perfectly crisped in their signature sauce that has just the right sweetness. Then their eggrolls, absolute best I've ever had! The ingredients are on point, always perfectly rolled & deep fried, fabulous flavor! I have never had a bad dish from Kim's....ever! Other popular dishes are the mongolian beef, egg foo young, sweet & sour chicken, awesome lunch specials. They've rolled with the times and you can now call in for delivery/pickup or do your ordering on GrubHub. It's not exactly a dine in place though there are two tables. They are more waiting for your order than actually sitting & dining. When it comes to my Chinese food, I'm forever devoted to Kim's. I have a confession...I have never had Chinese delivery, ever. I rarely order Chinese take out as well, I could probably count the number of times I've picked up food with just one hand. Today is epic for me, I felt like a rebel... I called Kim's Chop Suey and ordered food for delivery! Woohoo! I know... pathetic. Enough about that, here is a breakdown of what I've tried from Kim's: GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN- $9.95 breaded wonderfully although the sauce wasn't hot and spicy enough for my taste. VEGETABLE LO MIEN - $ 6.95 Very good because it's not soaking in soy sauce and oil. There was a lot of vegetables mixed in and it had the right taste of saltiness and the noodles were cooked perfectly. EGG DROP SOUP -large $ 3.75 Thick consistency and it was a bit too salty for my taste SHRIMP FRIED RICE -$5.55 Delicious and they weren't cheap on putting enough shrimp. Just like the lo mien, this dish wasn't salty nor oily. Overall, I was happy with my choice of hibernating at home today. It was worth paying the delivery charge of $2.50 intead of braving the negative wind chills outside. The food came after 30 minutes even if the owner said it will take about 40. Years ago this was good place, but recent years very disappointing. We tried it about a yr ago with a couple beef dishes and while not good, we decided to try again w/different dishes that received good ratings. Sesame chicken and 3 seafood dish. Sadly VERY disappointing. Chicken was overcooked, tough, saturated in oil with little chicken or flavor. This place is amazing. Delivery was super fast. I usually ask for extra sauces and I forgot to this time. However, they read my mind and delivered a lot of condiments. Most important, the food was amazing. We had the crab Rangoon, a few egg rolls, a few spring rolls and the bbq pork for apps. For entrees, we had the sesame chicken and beef and broccoli. I would have sworn that I had already excoriated these jokers, but apparently not. Several weeks ago a colleague ordered from Kim's for a bunch of us who were working late on a production release. The food was so wretched that I couldn't wait to unleash the Yelp-wrath, but apparently I must have been too exhausted or ambivalent by the time that I got home. Tonight--another release, the same guy chose Kim's again, and I stupidly exemplified the "fool me twice..." syndrome. So here is a double-dose of fair warning. First time was terrible cashew chicken, mediocre chicken fried rice, and the worst egg roll in the history of American Chinese food. I didn't even want the fried rice--I ordered white rice but they screwed it up--but it was the only edible food in my tray, as it turned out. Tonight I ordered sesame chicken, figuring "How can they screw that up?" Ha! Here's how: by frying the chicken in the same oil as their fish! I took one bite and halfway through I got a very distinct fishy taste (plus the chicken was tough and chewy). I took another bite, same result. Another bite, same result. I thought, "These fuckers cooked the chicken in the fish oil! AARRGGHH!" At least I got my white rice this time, but I didn't touch the egg roll. I ate about a third of the fishame chicken (I was starving) and tossed the rest. Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that it wasn't MY money going to waste. At least it was a bonding experience with my coworkers; you can't go through something this awful and not end up feeling closer to your comrades. Now I understand what 'Nam was like. read more

Kim's Chop Suey is not a dine-in restaurant. It's pretty much a carry-out only type of joint. Call ahead if you like. I was craving Chinatown food but I was nowhere near Chinatown, so I gave "Kim's Chop Suey" a try. I ordered their Salt & Pepper Shrimp with a side of egg rolls. It was ready in 5 minutes. The Salt & Pepper Shrimp was decent. It was deep fried breaded shrimp with green onions & jalepenos. It was almost like the "salt 'n pepper" food in Chinatown. .It had a nice kick to it. None of the shrimp had shells on it, which was nice. I just wish this entree came in a lunch special variation being that the majority of their lunch specials are listed around $5. I paid $11.95 for this entree. To be fair, this is not an accurate reflection of their prices...the majority of their dishes are priced around $6. I just really wanted to try the Salt 'n Pepper Shrimp. With the rice it came with, I'd say the portion serves two. If you eat like me...then it only serves "one." Hehe. The egg rolls were....well.....egg rolls. The service was fast and friendly....I would be willing to try more of their dishes in the near future. read more

I've been around a bit, and I've ordered food from questionable places all over. Places where you paid and received your food through turnstiles cut into bulletproof glass. Places that looked as if the health department had never gotten around to checking on them. This was bad. I only ordered 1 lunch special, but this is easily the worst Chinese food I've ever had. From Americanized, divey Chinese food places (no higher-end Chinese restaurant is serving chop suey) such as this, I usually order egg foo young. It's seemingly easy for them to make, difficult to mess up, and usually one of the cheaper menu items, because most of the dish is eggs. Knowing this, I readily ordered the shrimp egg foo young and fried rice lunch special, with a request that they make it spicy. What I got was decidedly not spicy, but that was the least of my problems. The fried rice was overcooked, gummy and bad. I have never in all my decades on the earth had bad fried rice from any Chinese food establishment. It just isn't supposed to happen. The shrimp egg foo young was unremarkable, except for the fact that it tasted remarkably like old dishwater. I will never return to this place, unless some sort of cataclysm forces me to run for my life and this restaurant has the only unlocked door I can find. 0 stars. read more

As far as 'fast-casual' food goes, Kim's Chop Suey rates among my top local 5; for me, I am a vegetarian, and there are so many items to choose from that leave me satiated -- (withOUT the 'why -did-I-eat-that?' feeling hours later). I love even the 'simple' veggie fried rice, as it is Not 'overly oily' nor too spicy, and the proportion of the veggies to the rice is good; also enjoy the veggie rolls; the tofu vegetable soup; the egg drop soup and the Combination Pan Fried Noodles Cantonese Style, nd the vegetable Egg Foo Young. My Mom loves the sesame chicken and the orange chicken. Moreover, for occasions when I have guests, Kim's offers several combination dishes and combination appetizer dishes to satisfy all palates. They are very efficient-- and open on some holidays (see my other review) when others are closed. They have been in Glenview for many years and am grateful they are still open! I grew up around the corner from China House I'm Chicago and when it closed down years ago, I had yet to find a place with great fried rice and awesome flavor. When moved to Niles I figured I'd try the area spots- SO happy I did. FINALLY I have a favorite spot for great Chinese food. The chicken fried rice had lots of chicken, egg and soy. The orange chicken was really good! The teriyaki beef sticks had an authentic flavor. Plus they threw in a ton of soy sauce and condiments which places don't do anymore. AMAZING FOOD!! Worst food EVER! I ordered sweet and sour chicken with white rice, one egg roll and one spring roll online. It got to me on time but first of all the fried chicken, rice, AND sauce came in ONE container! I've never seen that before! Usually they come in separate containers so the fried chicken doesn't get soggy. Secondly, the spring roll had shrimp in it and I specified I wanted BOTH egg and spring roll as veggie - not the worst thing that can happen but I'm pregnant and I have my cravings so that was disappointing, especially since I'm iffy on eating sea food: cooked or not. Lastly, when I went to try the chicken it tasted OLD, GOOEY, AND DRY!!! I can't begin to underline how OLD it tasted though. Everything else I can forgive but the OLD taste of chicken complimented by the OLD tasting rice was just too much grossness for me. And I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt so I did have my coworker try the chicken before I even said anything just because he's not as picky as me and usually can eat anything. Without me mentioning anything he spit out the chicken and was JUST as disgusted as me!!! So I knew it wasn't a fluke of my taste buds. I've ordered from here twice so far, via Grubhub, both times for myself and two other people. Collectively we've ordered egg drop soup, wonton soup, chicken & pea pods, egg rolls, crab rangoon, beef & broccoli, chicken & broccoli, chicken fried rice w/ curry. I know for sure the chicken & pea pods, beef & broccoli and chicken & broccoli all smelled AMAZING. And the folks who ate them loved them. Crab rangoon and egg rolls were very good (we're picky on those!). Soup was not bad but not great. I think I'll get the chicken fried rice without curry next time (it's good but prefer the sweet curry of Thai curry rice). I've hovered between 4 and 5 stars for this review. What pushed it over to 5? I absolutely LOVE is they are not chintzy on the sauce packets. You get a huge bag full of sauce packets. And you even get crunchy noodles in there! The place closes to me gives you one packet per item ordered and you pay for others, and you also pay for the crunchy noodles. I'm a fan of sweet & sour sauce and crunchy noodles so definitely appreciate this. read more

My first time ordering from here tonight. Sadly this place doesn't have much going for it and I had high hopes having read the reviews of others. In an effort to keep it short here's a list of pros and cons: Pros: massive portions, similar to red star on Greenwood if you've had that. It's easily enough to share between 2 people for dinner or a dinner and lunch for one (if you order the lunch or dinner specials) I ordered through uber eats since I had a coupon for the service and it was a simple ordering process and my food arrived when expected. Uber eats also has no minimum order for delivery! I was able to order just what I needed and nothing more. Other sites like grub hub or eat24 have a minimum order requirement of 10-15 bucks in order to be eligible for delivery so it was nice that I didn't have to order extra food that I wouldn't have eaten anyways. Cons: The quality of the food was not good. It was barely edible. The egg rolls were awesome but other than that it was bland and nothing to write home about. I ordered the orange chicken dinner special extra spicy and while it had a kick, I definitely wouldn't call it extra spicy. It was so heavy and greasy too. I'm sitting here 3 hours after I ate and the food still feels like it's weighing my stomach down. I ended up throwing my leftovers away in fear that I'll end up sick if I eat them the next day. Looks like I'll stick with China town kitchen on Waukegan which is still my favorite Chinese restaurant in Glenview. Their portions are perfect size and their food is fresher and has more flavor. I don't see myself coming back in all honesty but if I try Kim's ever again I'll be sure to order something different, and have a bottle of pepto bismol within reach. You could dine in, but the store front has only one table a few chairs and a fish tank. This place caters for the to-go and delivery crowd. Lunch specials are the go to for cheap eating and fast luncheon dining. Ma po tofu, orange chicken, mongolian beef are our picks. The lo mein chicken is tasty with big cuts of chicken. The catering menu is reasonable and the egg rolls and off menu smelts are the chosen items I would bring to a gathering or potluck. The food is always packed ready for pick up when stated.
