Seafood and sauce of the Double Pan-Fried Noodles with Seafood

Years ago, when Golden Chef occupied the spot where Yu's Mandarin now stands, it was my extended family's go-to Chinese restaurant in the suburbs. After Golden Chef closed, we waited a very long time for a worthy Chinese restaurant to take its place. Yu's Mandarin shows promise of becoming just that. So far, we've only tried their takeout. There were a couple of times we considered celebrating special occasions there, but we were disappointed to learn they didn't serve whole chickens or whole fish, which are essential dishes for traditional Chinese celebrations. Because of that, we held off on dining in. Thankfully, they now offer whole fish. Although it's on the pricier side, it's a step in the right direction and gives us hope that Yu's Mandarin could become a place for future family gatherings. For now, this review is based on our takeout experience. Vivian, who also speaks Cantonese, was knowledgeable and friendly over the phone. She answered our questions with confidence and helped us navigate the menu. On occasions when a younger staff member struggled with menu details, speaking with Vivian made a big difference. According to my husband, who picked up the orders, the parking lot is quite small, and parking can be a bit tricky. As for the food itself, it's been a mix of hits and misses. The Crabmeat and Velvet Corn Soup was a standout, smooth, flavorful, and reminiscent of what you'd find at a high-quality Chinatown restaurant. The Double Pan-Fried Noodles with Seafood was my favorite: crispy noodles, generous portions of fresh seafood, and a well-balanced sauce. On the other hand, the Garlic Chicken lacked garlic flavor and the chicken was not tender enough. Yang Chow Fried Rice is listed as "Mixed Meat Fried Rice" on the menu, was bland and short on ingredients. Despite a few missteps, we are happy to have what seems to be an authentic Chinese restaurant close to home. We are looking forward to dining in soon and trying more items from their menu. With some consistency and continued improvements, Yu's Mandarin could truly become a neighborhood favorite.

Yu's Mandarin - Love the Food, Service Missed the Mark. We went to Yu's Mandarin on wUwU's actual birthday. Surprisingly, it wasn't crowded--but the service didn't reflect that. We ordered soup with our main dishes, and it never came, yet it was still on the bill. No water was brought to the table either--we had to ask just to get some. That said, I still love the food. We order takeout from here regularly and have dined in so many times, which is why this experience was disappointing. The food remains solid, but the service that night was unexpected and off. Hoping it was just an off day.

I finally got here, been wanting to come since this new location opened! We came here with friends for lunch! The portions were small! I had the beef with flat rice noodles (this was pretty good and had a lot of "wok hey")! My friends had Mongolian beef (great flavor and beef was very tender) garlic chicken (too salty and the chicken was dry) and the Kung Pao Shrimp (shrimp was over cooked)! The staff really are not too attentive, we waited over 10 mins before anyone came to get our order! The noise level was pretty high, can't hear each other talk without raising our voice! All lunch entrees come with egg roll, fried wonton, fried rice and soup (choice of hot & sour or egg drop)!

Nice addition to Milwaukee Avenue for a quick lunch. Ample portions of protein in both the Mongolian Beef and Orange Chicken lunch specials. The rice with diced veggies served with it was a bit disappointing- very dry. The Hot and Sour soup was tasty. Server was very attentive as were other staff. The kitchen is visible through a glass viewing window...fun to watch the flames jumping up as they're cooking on the woks.

We made our first visit to this newest Yu's Mandarin location and had a mighty fine lunch. They run an efficient operation, and the wife and I were promptly greeted and provided a table in the middle of the vibrant and mostly Chinese lunch crowd. Glasses of cold water and a carafe of hot tea were then readily brought out. We ordered their Peking noodles ($10.50) and moo-shu pork combination lunch special ($11.50). They were 4-star good, served piping hot fresh, and also generously sized servings. We were both nicely provided a big cup of soup (egg drop for me and hot and sour for the wife) even though we only ordered one lunch combo special. The server was a welcoming and friendly lady but I didn't catch her name. Their dining space doesn't initially appear quite as large as you might think from the outside, but they have a large side room with several big tables that sort of hides their true capacity. I observed also their large open kitchen window in which you could see 4 chefs working in a big, open, and airy kitchen and they get to look out at the diners just as we get to look in on them. I thought this must be the nicest kitchen setup a chef could have in an Asian kitchen! Overall, a very nice lunch visit, and a solid 4 star experience. Thank you!

I thought this would be just another ordinary Americanized. Chinese restaurant but I was wrong. Their food is actually really good. Some dishes are more authentic than the others, There are still some americanized dishes, which are quite good, like the walnut shrimp, Which I love their version, by the way. But my friend recommended the noodle soup which I don't regret saying yes to at all.It was really good. And their broth was really authentic. It was super savory and flavorful. They're noodles was homemade or housemaid. Which meeting amazing. Service was great. We were taken care of really well and the place. Uh, is your typical Chinese place? Good ambience. And I think it would be good for group and family dinners. I would definitely come back to try more stuff on the menu because they do have an extensive menu. Happy eating!

06/26/24 - My wife & I were returning from Grayslake where we met a friend. We were both hungry & decide to stop @ Yu's Mandarin for dinner. Yu's Mandarin is fairly new. They completely remodeled the exterior of the exterior & interior & did a beautiful job. The first thing I noticed when I went into Yu's was total gut rehab of the exterior & the interior. I had eaten at the other restaurant Golden Chef on a number of occasions prior to them closing. Yu's Mandarin did an awesome job We ordered 3 dishes. They were all generous portions & not too expensive which is very much appreciated in these times of rising prices & extreme inflation. The dishes we ordered were 1) Szechuan Eggplant was excellent & the best dish 2) Fish Filet was also delicious (but I found out that they use tilapia which I usually don't eat) 3) Salt & pepper squid was good but a bit too chewy. I didn't know that had salt & pepper smelt as it wasn't on the menu (NEXT TIME). Raymond our server was awesome. From the moment we walked in he greeted us, seated us & brought our menus. Throughout the meal he was attentive. His was a very enjoyable meal. Nice ambiance, good food, good prices & great service. Next time I'm up in Wheeling I will stop by again.

The pork for lunch is so good so tender I don't even put plum sauce on it. I think it makes it too sweet hot and sour was so so a little much vinegar and the vegetable eggroll is OK but for 1195+ tax and tip better than McDonald's, and this is all my leftover Wow the pork is incredible. So tender.

I'm kind of upset writing this because I loved Yu's Mandarin, but what we ordered today really had lots of issues. First of all, I was able to order in Mandarin Chinese so I'd think the staff wouldn't treat me like a foreigner and that they'd try to actually cook it to Chinese ppl's palate, but what we had was...really mediocre. The most upsetting thing is I think the mushroom they used as well as a few other vegetable ingredients were all from canned, instead of being fresh. There's a particular taste to canned foods you could just tell. There's also an overwhelming taste of brined salt taste rather than freshly added salt and other flavors. Some of the vegetables tasted kind of stale and old, lack of the crisp and refreshing-ness. We ordered on a Saturday evening, so I highly doubt that there's a supply issue. The eight treasure tofu casserole came in a large tray, which initially we thought "wow very generous portion", but the ingredients were not that fresh, or I think they didn't process the sea cucumber correctly so there's a remnant stale taste that permeated through all other ingredients. My kids usually love Chinese food, but they were all saying that it's not good. The egg drop soup was also really disappointing, they put tomatoes in it :(, which, ok maybe it's creative, but it really doesn't go well and the flavor is subpar. When we want egg drop soup, we really just want the clean egg drop soup. Not tomato egg soup. I'm really bewildered at the quality of foods we got this time. We typically order from Vernon Hills and not Wheeling, but expected the Wheeling to be the same or better. Maybe it's a fluke. We really hope to see more fresh ingredients (particularly mushroom and vegetable, please don't use canned) and more depth of flavors that bring out the Chinese taste (more salt is not always the answer).

I still prefer the Schaumburg location but the food is also good. The place is smaller than the Schaumburg. There My fave is the szechwan eggplant. So yummy! everything we ordered is good. Price is fair. The service is also great. So i recommend this place.

Cold egg drop soup. Don't have a pic of anything else I was supposed to get with the lunch special.

My wife, her mom, and I were in Chicago to remember my father-in-law's death anniversary, and my sister-in-law chose Chef Ping's, for our party of nine for a Wednesday lunch. Parking is plentiful and the dining area can seat a lot. We got seated at a large round table in the back room, with a large lazy susan (just need to remember to spin it very slowly). We ordered a lot, and the food came out slowly. There was plenty of leftovers for the local folks to have for future meal or two. 3 Shrimp Toast (6 pieces each) - $26.85 - greasy but good, with the shrimp paste being a little sweet (in a good way) Noodle in Black Bean Sauce ($12.50) - this is jja jang myeon, which two of us had the previous night. It was OK, not near the top of the best I've had. Ping's Noodle Soup ($15.50) - the other classic Chinese-Korean dish, this is jjampong, a dish I've had many times. I was the only one to eat it, so ended up being my main dish. It was good, with thick noodles...just wish it had more seafood. Salt & Pepper Smelt ($16.90) - not sure if always available, but this was excellent...my favorite dish and one that I finished once I realized that everybody had their fill. It really depends on the quality of the smelt, which was excellent in this case. It was lightly battered, and carefully deep fried. Other dishes enjoyed by others: 2 Salt & Pepper Prawns - $35.90 - large head-on shell-on prawns fire wokked. Salt & Pepper Tofu ($11.50) - for the vegetarians Chicken Skewers (4) - $8.75 - tender and shareable Walnut Shrimp ($19.90) - mayo with shrimp Young Chow Fried Rice ($12.50) - fried rice is a necessity for our group Mongolian Beef ($17.50) - a classic 2 Sesame Ball (4) - $7 - a great way to finish a meal. 18% tip was automatically added, and service was OK throughout. Our water was kept refilled, and I think hot water was as well. It was a good meal and opportunity to get back together

Both the service and quality of food has gone way down from what they were famous for. The waitress spilled my tea, also dipped her finger in my tea, had no apology or offer to exchange it with a fresh cup. I had to ask her for a fresh cup of tea. Then the other server that brought our entrees spilled my husbands tea and again no offering to getting a fresh cup. We had to ask AGAIN for a fresh cup! While the portions were generous, the quality of all the food has gone way down. The special family recipe of thier shrimp dish Gan Pong is nothing but fried shrimp with dried chili peppers and no flavor. The Hunan spicy beef and chicken appeared to be all globs and sticky because of excessive and over use of corn starch used during the cooking process. This dish didn't have any unique flavor that one would expect. Previously we had experienced a difference in the food, taste and quality and that's what kept us returning. Sadly, after this experience I wouldn't recommend it to anyone or come back! I'd rather stick with Yu's Mandarin than drive to this place! Quality always wins over quantity in my books!

It's been a tough lately since our go to place changed ownership and the quality declined. Hong Kong Restaurant is a small, family owned restaurant in the same strip mall as the Ace Hardware. It's a take out only restaurant, no tables and no seating. The lady is so nice. I called ahead asking how her General Tso's was made with brown sauce or if it was an orange type of sauce. She gave me a good description and mentioning it had some spice to it, but not offensive. It was exactly what my husband wanted. It wasn't overly breaded and the sauce was sweeter, savory with a little heat. He was a happy man. The fried rice had plenty of chicken and cooked well. The portions were huge! I also ordered beef and broccoli Cantonese chow mein. This was delicious! There was so much beef and broccoli, the sauce wasn't salty and went perfect with the chow mein noodles. We ordered egg rolls and crab rangoons too. Both we were good. The wrapper was a little thicker than I prefer, but they were both good. I'm looking forward to trying other dishes on their menu like their egg foo yung. No pics ... hungry teenaged boys dove into the food right away.
