Hidden gem alert for authentic Chinese food! We ordered the Beijing Roast Duck (half set), Yu-Shiang Shredded Pork (asked for less spicy), Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs, and the Clay Pot Tofu with mushrooms and veggies. Everything was absolutely delicious. The roast duck was crispy and flavorful, and the shredded pork had the perfect sweet, savory, and tangy balance. The salt and pepper ribs were perfectly seasoned, and the clay pot tofu was pure comfort food packed with fresh veggies. The quality here is top-notch, and the portions are great. Came on a Saturday afternoon and there were plenty of tables available. Preordered a half duck set about a week in advance for 4 adults and a child but we should have ordered the full duck set instead. There wasn't enough duck to go around. The duck was brought out and carved tableside. It came with wraps, hoisin sauce, scallions, cucumber, and soup. The duck was the highlight of our meal but it was on the pricier side. We also had the honey walnut shrimp, Yangzhou fried rice, and fish fillet in pickled mustard soup. The other dishes were decent but pretty standard. Food was solid overall with a few minor hiccups. The Dan Dan noodles seemed a bit overdone, but the meat and sauce had great flavor. Also, they're not kidding about the spice level--if you're sensitive, consider ordering a notch (or several notches) down. Standouts for me were the egg yolk shrimp and Chongqing crispy chili chicken. The wait took a bit, but everything came out all at once. Decent Chinese restaurant in Evanston, it's still not as good as what you can find in Chinatown though. If you want to have duck, I'd recommend that you place a pre-order beforehand to make sure there's enough stock on the day you need for how many people you're with. Duck skin was crispy and fatty and paired great with the wrapper and cucumbers. Service is a bit slow, they tend to be understaffed for how many customers come in. read more

We had shredded pork in Yu Shiang chili sauce, stir-fried pork intestine with pickled cabbage, beef and tripe in chili oil, and Mongolian beef (not pictured). We ordered the whole duck with no prior reservation on a busy weekend. It was very good. I have tried Pekin duck throughout China and Chicago. I thought this was pretty decent experience. The duck fried rice was good too. The duck was enough to feed family of four with leftovers. The value proposition was decent. However the soup dumpling can use some work. You probably can buy the Costco soup dumpling for $10 and essentially taste the same. Service was good. Most clients are Chinese. Nice addition to Evanston Chinese food scene. Of course I forgot it was Chinese new year and ordered food when it was so busy! Originally we ordered the pork belly, duck fried rice, sesame chicken and cold dish with chicken in chili oil. The pork belly unfortunately we couldn't try because they were out. I ordered take out so they called and asked if I wanted something else so we replaced with a different pork belly dish but they ended up never giving it to us. But the second I called they were quick to give us a refund and apologize for their mistake. So 10/10 for the service. Moving on to the actual food I did get. The duck fried rice was amazing. The duck is soooo good! The chicken in chili oil was also really good that I combined the chili oil with the rice and oh man my mouth is drooling! What we didn't like was the sesame chicken. It wasn't crispy, wasn't flavorful. Would not recommend! But overall I'd go back for the chicken in chili oil and the duck fried rice! I can only imagine how good the Peking duck is, definitely will have to try it if I ever eat in. read more

Wife and me came for Beijing duck. We ordered a half and hot sour soup and cucumber appetizer. The H&S soup came out quickly. It was lukewarm warm and passable. Missing some of the traditional items like lily buds and black mushrooms. The cucumber salad was decent. I missed the chili oil. Duck broth arrived then The duck arrived carved up. Unknown to me this place is known for the roast duck carved at table side. I know this place as a sister restaurant to Lao Tian dumplings. It's a tall open space with tables that can adjust to large and small parties. Friendly service throughout the entire meal and authentic/tasty food. read more

Came on a weekend it was packed and pre-ordered Peking duck ahead of time. It was juicy and the skin was crispy. The skin dipped in the sugar they provided was delicious. The chairs were spaciously placed, I have noticed they were celebrating people's birthdays, they played a song for the birthday person which I think it adds to a special touch. Very good service special shout out to our waiter, Remy, very courteous and knowledgeable. As far as parking there is meter street parking is free on Sundays however it is a commodity. We were craving some Asian food, and decided to try this relative new place. We ordered dumplings and four different main course meals as well as egg-drops soup. The dumplings where simply delicious, fresh, ample of stuffing and a true delight. The soup was very good, with deep flavor and we loved the minced beef! Each one of the main dishes were very good, tasteful, balanced spice and heat. Very generous portions and not overly greasy. We highly recommend this place and hope to order again soon read more

We have been looking for a great Chinese restaurant in Evanston and now we have its. The hunan beef was to die for . I said out loud, "you can taste legit orange" in the orange chicken. **Update--we returned to the restaurant later that night and were promised a refund. That has yet to materialize, and there has been no follow-up. Super disappointing, and we're out over $40.** After waiting 30 additional minutes for our take out (beyond the estimated time), we went to pick our food up, and when we returned home we realized an order of dumplings and an entree were missing. Their line was busy, so we couldn't call to have it delivered, and we didn't want to wait another 30 minutes for them to give us the food we ordered. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get the money refunded, but it's disappointing, and was kind of a bummer because we didn't quite have enough food for our family. The food was good, but they need to figure out how to correctly fulfill their orders, even if they're busy. read more

Now the Good News/Not so good News Good News: The food options are plentiful with a large menu & some hits from LTDH. The entrees are tasty & portions are sharable (at $18 expected). The dining room/ambiance is huge(seating plentiful) Not so good news: Where LTDH is mostly carryout only due to its size, Tian Bistro has plenty of seating room. However, the carryout service is mucho mucho lacking. We have ordered takeout twice with mixed results. The food has been good, but not great. Special requests like adding bean sprouts to Mongolian Beef (we pay extra) seem to confound the servers & chefs. Additionally, their front door sign advertises 10% off "entire order" on dine in & carryout during specified hours. But for carryout, you have to ask for the discount or you pay full price. In summation, We are die hard loyal Dumpling House customers (Won Ton Soup to die for). But we will either try Tian for sit down service & hope for the best. We tried this new restaurant tonight and it was absolutely amazing! We ordered so many different dishes to try that I can't remember the name of every one, but a few memorable ones: Garlic green beans were actually garlicky but not too oily The potato, eggplant, pepper dish was so tasty! The Beijing duck was a whole new and amazing experience! They carve the duck tableside and serve it with what can be described like a very thin tortilla and you roll it up with sauces and green onion. AND! The duck skin dipped in brown sugar literally melted in my mouth. We also had tofu that was softer than anything I've had before. We sat at a large table where all the food was placed on a lazy Sudan and could be easily shared with our group. It's a nice open modern clean restaurant. Really good and authentic Beijing Duck, and 狮子头melt in your mouth, really delicious! I've heard that the food quality wasn't ideal when the restaurant first opened, likely due to how busy it was. However, by late December 2025, the menu had expanded a lot, and the roasted duck was freshly made and delicious. The head chef was very friendly as well. Amazing authentic Peking roasted duck! The best I've had in IL since I moved here 16 years ago. The dumplings were delicious too. I am very good at making dumplings myself, so I'm pretty picky about the quality of dumplings. But I'd give it a 5 stars rating. Price is surprisingly reasonable. We reserved a table a week before for Friday 6:45pm, arrived 10 minutes early, our table was not reserved and we were not seated until 7:10pm. They did not bother to even give us water until I ask for it, the manager didn't apologize, and didnt offer anything complimentary. Food wise, the duck is decent, the braised beef noodles was very very soggy and overcooked, and the soup dumplings were good. The pot tea is very questionable, they didn't have what I asked for and didn't tell me they switched my tea and just gave me some random one. I was here for a celebration dinner and that has ruined it for us. If you are coming for the duck, just order take out. I'm giving a 2 star because the waiter was actually nice and he apologize. Some things at Tian Bistro we liked: 1). It was busy which is always nice to see with Evanston restaurants. 2). The front part of the restaurant was well lit. Some things at Tian Bistro which confused/annoyed us: 1) We ordered the Beijing Duck for two ahead of time when we made reservations for three. Our friend didn't want duck, so we asked the waiter whether her dish would be served at the same time as our duck. The waiter only said the food comes out when it's ready and there was no way they could coordinate the dishes to come out at the same time. "No way"?? Like it's impossible...? FYI: our friend's delicious Kung Pao chicken arrived 20 minutes after she ordered it while our lukewarm duck (along with a paltry garnish plate) came out much later. So she was nearly done eating while we were just starting. Our waiter was nice, but not very helpful or organized. 2). Tian does not have a liquor license. Their water/tea/soda menu is limited. Plan accordingly. 3). We had dinner reservations at 7pm. We were seated at 7:15pm. Perfectly ok. By 8:20pm, the staff was cleaning the rest of the restaurant and putting chairs on top of the tables while we (and other remaining guests) were still eating. Very tacky. 4). Our feet discovered two large pieces of broken dishes under our table. 5). FYI: They do not provide any napkins until your entree arrives. Really odd. Request flatware from your server if needed. 6). Tian Bistro is located in the space formerly occupied by the bar, Bangers & Lace. It looks like Tian is using the back of the bar for storing various items like a large crock pot, a large crumpled cover/blanket, etc. They may not care how it looks, but it looks sloppy. In spite of the negatives, we plan to come back to try other dishes or order online from them. Not the duck, though. It wasn't anything special in terms of taste. It looks like the owners are trying to run the bistro with an emphasis on their food and not paying attention to their customer space or in-house experience. We support that to a point. But when your downsides outshine what you're trying to emphasize in your restaurant space, then either attend to those downsides or just focus on online orders. We wish them luck! read more

Horrible service and irresponsible staff. We ordered takeout and arrived at the time they told us our order would be ready. We waited for 1 hour and got our order which turned out to be wrong. We waited for them to correct our order, which took another 30 minutes and we found out none of the staff was actually trying to solve to problem. One of the most mediocre Chinese restaurants I've ever dined at. The skin on the duck was served with the meat (not separately as it should be), the pancakes were sticky and hard to chew, the soup dumplings were tiny and hard with little "soup" inside,, the so-called duck soup was like water -- and on top of that they wanted to charge us $9 to take the carcasss home and make our own soup, unlike other CHinese restaurants.
