My daughter and I planned to pick up Thai food and have a lunch picnic outside in the gorgeous weather, but discovered that our favorite Thai place didn't open until 5:00. We were in north Evanston after errands and decided to try Bonsai Cafe. Online ordering was easy and our order was ready when we arrived. The lady was very nice. I had the Chinese Chicken salad with a side of shrimp and my daughter got the Bonsai Bento Box which came with miso soup, she chose the chicken teriyaki entree which came with rice, a California roll and three pieces of sushi. We both felt that our meals were a bit lacking in flavor (my salad had few ingredients and was boring) and her teriyaki was bland, but everything was good. The sushi was fresh and she liked the soup. We also had their homemade ginger ale which was also fresh and refreshing. They smartly package the carry out drinks in cardboard carriers. Prices were very reasonable and we agreed that we will try other dishes next time.

I love this place. From the second we got there to the second we left it was, for lack of a better word, a vibe. The lighting was pretty, and it had a cozy atmosphere. And I would just like to point out the extremely variety filled menu. It was amazing, there was nothing missing! And the food didn't take to long to get to us. We got crispy pot stickers and rainbow maki, and it was SOOO good. The pot stickers were crispy, flavorful, and loved by me and my family. The rainbow maki was also amazing. I like how the fish balences out the flavor of the California rolls. Five minutes after our appetizers came the main dish had arrived. My beef and broccoli was heavenly, the beef was cooked to perfection, and there was the perfect amount of brown sauce and rice. There could be a but more broccoli. This place is amazing and I highly recommend it

Chicken pho was delicious- service was okay, around a lot but not when she was needed, had to get up to ask her for hoisin and siracha which she didn't understand and got Chinese chili sauce instead. Sushi was okay-some of it was fresh but some cuts were pretty dry. The sushi was cut kind of sloppily-I think the sushi chef was inexperienced. The shrimp in particular was really dry and when it comes to sushi that's pretty bad. I don't want to talk badly about the service but I think that being the only table in the place you would think the service would be more attentive but it was wanting. She came around but very briefly and again we had to get up and find her a few times. Aside from the Chicken pho nothing else really stood out and was kind of sub par.

An excellent little restaurant. The fried rice's that my wife and I had were delicious. Definitely going to return.

Tasty and priced right - not a place for ambiance per se but carrying out will certainly satisfy your Thai cravings.

The Kung Pao chicken here is definitely the best I've ever had. I've sorely missed it since moving away from Evanston.

Good wide menu with items that you don't find at your mainstream japanese restaurant. More like old school Chicago Japanese. (Thinking a blend here of old Ginza and maybe some parts Sunshine.) Maybe only with the departure of those favorites we appreciate more what has stayed on. Appetizer selection is long enough to just get small plates to share. Notables: - ebi snijo (homemade shrimp ball) - hamachi jaw (if you haven't had it) - hirame no cha soba age (fried green tea noodles and whitefish rolled with seaweed) - evokes the old Ginza restaurant for me - octopus sunomono Even after three recent visits without repeat apps, there are still more we haven't had elsewhere to try. Part of the reason for that is - we get entrees too. We've been happy with: - chirashi (curious how the sashimi D differs) - Salmon Bento (D) - so many different things fun to share! - Kuni's Special - gomaee and mixed seafood sunomono, then our choice of sashimi followed by saba - nabe yaki udon is reasonable here at $13 with two tempura shrimp Know there's lots of reviews here, but as long as there is room on weekends for us we're happy to share!

Within minutes, the restaurant was completely packed, both indoors and outdoors.  There were guests waiting to be seated throughout the evening. If you visit on a busy night like this one, be prepared to allow longer time for the food to come to the table. I could see that some of the dishes were ready on the kitchen counter waiting to be delivered to the tables, but they seemed to be a bit short-handed, especially for the tables in the patio. Our server took our order at 7:10 pm, and it took 24 minutes for our food to come out at 7:36 pm. It was fine as we were not in a hurry. The décor of Blowfish is modern and comfortable.  Our server, Bu, was friendly, cheerful, efficient, and professional.  Both my husband and I ordered a Hot Green Tea ($2 x 2).  I ordered a Sakura Roll ($17), with crab mix, jalapeño, avocado, seared white tuna, white truffle oil, wasabi mayo, sweet soy sauce, and scallions.  It was beautifully presented and packed with flavors.  There were 9 pieces and I shared 1 with my husband who also liked it.  I ate some of the pieces whole and dissembled some of them, each of the ingredients was fresh and tasty, together they created complex flavors that didn't need any other sauces or wasabi.  It's a great choice that I'd happily order it again. My husband had a Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen ($18), with silky tonkotsu broth, pork chashu, kikurage, nitamago, scallions, corn, spinach, roasted seaweed, sesame, and black garlic oil.  The bowl of ramen looked attractive.  I asked him how it tasted; he said that it was one of the best bowls of ramen he's ever had!  Wow! That's high praise coming from him, I don't think I've ever heard him saying that before!  He said that there's a nice kick even though it was not noted on the menu.  I am intrigued and will definitely try it in our future visits. He also ordered 2 pieces of sashimi -- Hamachi/yellowtail ($8).  There seemed to be a misunderstanding, and two orders of sashimi were entered instead of one.  Since the sashimi portions were fairly small, he didn't bring it up to the server, he just happily ate them and paid the bill for 2 orders ($8 x 2).  The sashimi was fresh. We also ordered a Dragon Roll ($16) to go, that had shrimp tempura, BBQ eel, avocado, and cucumber.  It was also very good. Overall, we were delighted to discover Blowfish. Between the welcoming service, fresh, flavorful food, and comfortable atmosphere, it was an excellent dining experience. We'll definitely be back.

The shallot rice with vegetables had no vegetables at all and tasted as if it was premade and warmed up again in the microwave. The shallot rice with beef was the same and contained tiny bits of burned beef. The sushi was not fresh and the crispy spring rolls were akin to dog treat sticks. The food is expensive and some of the worse food I've ever had. While I appreciate the business owners detailed response, there are contradictions. When ordering the shallot fried rice from the restaurants website on July 2, vegetables were included as an option. Today vegetables have been replaced with herbs. Nevertheless we chose the available vegetable option therefore vegetables were requested. The restaurant received our vegetables request as indicated on the pictured receipt and packaging. We received herbs and rice but no vegetables. We did not order through a third party delivery service. We placed the order through the restaurant website and I arrived early to pick up the food. I hope that the owner is able to receive my feedback constructively and take accountability for the issues my family encountered with the restaurant.

We ordered an Espresso Martini, Diet Coke, Shoyu ramen, and the Black Dragon roll to share. Unfortunately, the food and drinks didn't quite live up to the atmosphere. The espresso martini was pretty bland and lacked that bold coffee flavor you'd expect. The shoyu ramen was extremely salty--my boyfriend usually enjoys saltier dishes, but even he couldn't get through it. It almost tasted like a heavily seasoned braised pork broth that had been diluted into a ramen base. The Black Dragon roll also felt a bit overwhelming, with too many competing flavors, and it came across more sour than balanced. Overall, great service and ambiance, but the food could use some improvement.
