Two completely different experiences last month dining in and today, picking up food from here. My brother had been here years ago and remembered liking the food so much, that we drove up from downtown Chicago to test his memory. The basil fried rice, fried spring rolls, tom kha, and pad thai were all absolutely delicious. Generous quantities, excellent flavors, authentic recipes. We then tried a curry to bring home and it was too watery - not enough coconut milk. Today, we ordered the same basil fried rice but they packed a regular container or plain steamed rice and a container of minced chicken!? Also, the portion sizes are only about 60-65% of what you get when you dine-in. The drunken noodles we ordered had the exact same minced chicken mix put on noodles. Once you try this food, be prepared to be hooked! A dear friend of mine brought me here and I inhaled everything that was in front of me so fast! The ingredients are FRESH and you can taste the difference! Additionally, I don't know who the chef is but they are magical! Quick seating, pretty bright inside, but not too many tables. Tables are modular, so you can maybe fit a group of 8? Had Kari puff, duck curry, chicken satay, beef pad Thai, fried tofu. Kari puff was to have sweet potato, didn't really notice it, but had a slightly sweet meat mix inside. Was nice. Duck was nice, went pretty well with the curry surprisingly. Got low spicy and that worked well to have some kick but not overpowering. Chicken satay was so-so. Little over done, tough. Flavor was standard. Sauce nice. Pad Thai- pretty good. Decent mixture of ingredients. Felt the sweet-sour sauce was a little overpowering. Dish would have been really nice if the sauce was toned down a little. Fried tofu was decent. Nice crunch. Three *** because it's relatively cheap and edible. I ordered chicken Pad Thai. A fair amount of chicken but it did not feel freshly pan fried. Hardly any vegetable. Lots and lots of noodles It came in a little bowl that reminded me of microwave safe plastic reheat bowls. In fact, that's what it was.. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this was a prepared meal and it was re-heated in a microwave . I'm not going back to this place. Especially after experiencing some great Thai restaurants across this country. If their customers are satisfied with this, then I don't think they've had much experience in the average Thai cuisine. This is a nice restaurant to grab tasty Thai food. It's a small size place with only a few tables to dine-in. It's usually a take-out spot. It's a popular spot among college students. When my family and I visited, the restaurant was almost full, given the small space and limited seating. Luckily, there was a table available for us and we didn't have to wait. They have an extensive menu with a good variety to choose from. We ordered papaya salad, spring rolls, chicken pad thai (mild), chicken Penang curry noodles (medium spicy), and beef Khao soi (extra spicy). The appetizers didn't take long to be served, but the entrees did take a bit longer than expected. I am guessing they were busy with takeout orders. The papaya salad was refreshing and tasty. The spring rolls were just okay. We have had better tasting ones elsewhere. The entrees were flavorful and delicious. The flavors of Penang curry and Khao Soi were to our liking. The only critique I had about these two dishes was that their curry side was very runny. Usually, we have had thicker curry sauce for these dishes elsewhere. The pad thai was good and my son liked it. We received good service and the prices were very reasonable. This was a good find, and we liked our meal. Siam Splendour started my Thai food phase and has been keeping it alive for the last few months! I've eaten here a number of times, and these are my favorite dishes: - Chicken Satay: Simple but great appetizer! The chicken is always juicy, and the pickles and peanut sauce pair well with it. - Green Curry (with tofu): If I could only order one thing from here, it'd be the green curry. It's filled with different veggies, like bamboo shoots, Thai eggplant, and green beans. I've tried it with every protein, and tofu is the best because it soaks up all the flavor. - Roasted Duck Curry: Chicken, pork, and beef can be a bit dry and overcooked in their curries, so I honestly avoid them, but the duck stays tender in this one! Runner-up: - Kang Masaman Curry: I really like this curry, but it doesn't have many toppings -- it's essentially just protein, potatoes, and peanuts. It's not a problem if you're getting other dishes, but alone, it might feel monotonous. I have an average-to-high spice tolerance, and I get 3/5 or medium spice level for everything. All of the dishes come in sizable portions so you'll leave with plenty of leftovers! The papaya salad was so refreshing and the little bits crispy chicken made every bite super satisfying! I've never had papaya salad with the crispy chicken before and this was a super unique version that worked! The food was really delicious and the service was great! The staff was so kind and our meals arrived quickly. I've been looking for some delicious khao soy in Chicago, and this is what I ordered. It was a bit different from traditional khao soi as it did not use egg noodles, but it was still delicious and the portion left me with seconds the next day. I will definitely return! read more

Before the pandemic, I worked near Siam Splendour and had lunch take out from there almost every single day. The food was very good, then. Today, after more than six months missing it, we drove half an hour from Chicago up to Evanston for the take out that I loved so much and had eaten so many times. When we got back home, the dish which was the reason we went up there in the first place, the one that I've eaten dozens of times, was a bait and switch. When I opened up the plastic container, my Kao Pad Nam Prik Pao--Thai classic hot chili paste shrimp fried rice--had absolutely no shrimp in it whatsoever. Not one. Not a piece of shrimp, absolutely none. I'm not an idiot. I've eaten this dish so many times it's ridiculous. So I would notice if half the dish was missing. Well, half the dish was missing. Not only that, I specifically requested that it be made spicy. I asked multiple times for them to ensure that they did that. That's how I have eaten this dish for two years. They ignored me and made it medium. I paid $12 for them to make my dish not spicy enough, and not even bother to give me half of its main ingredients. Now we've all ordered from restaurants that have had bumps in the road during the pandemic. But we have also all ordered from restaurants that have tried to cheat you out of expensive ingredients during the pandemic. I believe that is exactly what Siam splendor is doing here. When I called to let them know what happened, they repeatedly put me on hold and said we're going to go check, we're going to go check, as if they were just waiting for me to hang up. Here's the deal. Yes the food was great six months ago. The fact that I dreamed of this food all throughout working from home and finally convinced my partner to make a special, half hour long trip up to get this food...And this is what I found in my bag when I get home? How many other people have they tried to cheat out of ingredients like this? How many other people have called to complain and they just gave them the runaround? We were actually planning to make trips up to Siam Splendour for take out a regular thing for the rest of the year, since my office will not be reopening physically anytime soon. Instead, now I will never spend another dollar there again. If I were you, I would very carefully examine your food before you leave the cashier. Have them open your bag and show them exactly what they're giving you. There is no way whatsoever a protein dish comes out of a restaurant kitchen with nobody in the kitchen noticing that there's actually no protein in it. Shameless. [EDIT: The next day...] I posted the above last night. Today, I have been called no fewer than three times on the phone by the restaurant. I can only imagine this is because they viewed this review, and want me to change or remove it, since it lowered their Yelp rating by half a star. You know what? The time to have called me back would have been last night when the restaurant ruined my dinner, offering to make it right. Clearly, they had my number (it isn't as if I left my number in this review.) Please stop calling--it is unethical--I am not altering my review. This is probably one of the more legit places I've been to in the Chicago area for Thai food. The level of heat in their dishes remind me of Thailand and isn't spice just for the sake of spice. Pad See Ew - Really, really good. It's a little on the sweeter side, but the noodles, the sauteed greens and protein, were all cooked to the right consistency and doneness. The flavor profile was pretty spot on, despite being slightly sweet, they got the sauce into the ingredients vs just sitting on top of the noodles and meats. Yum Woon Sen w/ Chicken - This was okay. I usually love this dish because it's got a little kick and a little sourness to it, to give it a unique flavor. But this dish was a little too sour, a little too overpowering. It became all about the sour rather than having a balance of spice, sour, and sweet. Kao Pad Nam Prik Pao (Shrimp Fried Rice) - This was really good. The chili shrimp paste gave the fried rice just the right amount of umami without being overbearing or overly salty. I'm allergic to shrimp, so can't say anything to how it was cooked, but the rice itself was delicious! It came with strips of scrambled egg to help give some balance to the rice and shrimp. Green Curry - This was okay. The ingredients, especially the vegetables, lacked tenderness and flavor, and the curry itself was just okay, albeit being on the spicier side of things. Panang Curry - This was pretty good, but medium was a little hot for us, and we love spice. Had we not ordered it medium, we would've really liked this dish I think. You could taste the smooth balance of the peanut butter through the heat, and that would typically be all you need to balance out the spice in a dish like this. The flavors were definitely there on this one! Mango Sticky Rice - Small portions. The mango was ripe, sweet, delicious, the sticky rice left me a bit wanting. It was sticky, but it didn't have much flavor beyond being sweetened slightly, I don't know how you'd make this item more delicious, but it wasn't as good as the ones I've had elsewhere in the past. Pad Krapoa Ped (Sauteed Roasted Duck) - This item was pretty disappointing. There was a fair amount of duck, and had other veggies in there too (bell peppers, onions, basil, etc.) but the entire dish was entirely too greasy, made it hard to eat. read more

The portion sizes are large (especially the appetizers) and the food was tasty. Would recommend for those in the area who want some great Thai. I ordered the Lime Chicken starter, the Chicken Pad See Ew Noodles, and a Thai Iced Tea. The noodles and tea are my go-to whenever ordering Thai, and both were really great - no complaints. The noodles were super flavorful and full of chicken and veggies. The tea was also fabulous! My friend spoke so highly of the Lime Chicken so I wanted to give it a try but it just wasn't for me. It's deep-fried chicken in a tempura like batter with a mayo-lime dipping sauce, however, while the outside looked golden brown, the batter wasn't cooked through all the way so it was a bit of a soggy, gooey mess by the chicken itself. Also, I felt like the chicken was flavorless and while the dipping sauce was very good, I wished there had been more seasoning overall. Great spot for large parties (make sure to bring your own drinks since it's BYOB) or takeout. I was so incredibly impressed by the high level of service here. They were accommodating for our group of roughly 20 folks on a Friday night and even willingly split the checks by table to make it easier for us. Orders were taken promptly and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We came to celebrate a birthday and they gave us free Thai desserts and many plates of free food, which was so sweet and made us feel extremely welcome. Of course, the food was great. They have lots of variety (soups, apps, noodles, entrees, etc) but every dish we had was well made and reasonably priced. Fresh Spring Rolls: Interesting take on spring rolls. These weren't fried or rolled like usual and were rather saucy and sticky. Good appetizer to get you hungry for the next dish! Imperial fried rice: Wow this was delicious and definitely my favorite dish. Highly recommend if you're looking for a carb dish. It has just a hint of sweetness and spice and is really flavorful. The Chinese sausage is very distinct and they Kuay Tiew Kee Moa: I have never had such a refreshing version of this dish. Most places use canned veggies but this place uses fresh veggies (broccoli, tomato, etc) and you can tell. The dish is well balanced and incredibly fresh. Tom Ka Kai: The restaurant owner surprised us with a free dish of spicy and sour coconut milk soup. While the taste was not my favorite, I enjoyed trying something different. They definitely don't skimp on the chicken! Pad Thai with Shrimp and Tofu: Call me basic but I'm a huge fan of pad thai. This one really hit the spot. The entire dish was seasoned perfectly and the quality of the shrimp was great. Pad Kraprao with Chicken: The only dish I was disappointed by. Siam Splendour has one of my favorite tom yum soups in town! I love how it has the perfect amount of spicy and full of flavor. I like to come here for their lunch buffets because for just a little over $10 (included tax), you can eat your fill of pad Thai, pad see ew, curry, etc. Their lunch buffets also include free soda or tea. The parking lot is very small and fills up during peak hours. I would highly suggest carpooling with others if you're heading to Siam Splendour with a larger group. There are plenty of tables and seating available and either you're eating by yourself or with other people, there should be plenty of spaces. I've never been here for dinner, but I know their lunch is a great choice! read more
