My wife and I are happy that Lulu's reopened a few years ago -- good food and friendly waitstaff. We have tried a number of dishes over the years which are all really good. Last night for a change of pace, I ordered the Tempura Cauliflower appetizer, served with sriracha aioli, scallions and charred lemon. Out came a portion large enough to be my entree, perfectly breaded. The combination of sriracha mayo and lemon made it a tasty treat. With such an extensive menu, including the Blue Horse Tavern and Tacos Diablo, there's something for everyone to eat there. read more

Decided to just go for an evening stroll in downtown Evanston and hopefully stumble upon something good for dinner and fortunately fell face first in here lol. Unfortunately there is no actual location anymore but was pleased to find out their menu was still being served at either Taco Diablo or the BlueHorse Tavern. First off, it's hard not to fall in love with a place that serves a basket of free chips and bomb ass salsa. Went with the Calamari and the Japanese Eggplant for a light dinner and was actually blown away by the flavors! The dipping sauce served with the calamari wasn't a traditional cocktail sauce...it was better. The eggplant medallions were also covered in an absolutely divine sauce that tasted vinaigrette based. This is an interesting arrangement where you are seated in the taco place but you can order from there distinctly different menus. It worked out perfectly as everyone found exactly what they wanted on the menus. Plates were shared and all of the Lulu's shareables were so very good. TL;DR 4.5 Great food & service with MASSIVE food portions! My family and I used to visit Lulu's all the time when they were down the street, after they closed down everyone was bummed out. So happy they're back! Ambiance: Lulu's is now part of a triple restaurant combo with a shared kitchen & offerings for all of them. I believe the other 2 are Tex-mex and bar food. The place has kind of a nice pub feel which is a bit of a juxtaposition for Thai fusion but it is nicely appointed and comfortable. Service: Our server was very kind and warm, and always appeared at the perfect moment to help us out. Food came out INSANELY fast and was hot and fresh. Food: We had the poke and wings as appetizers and both were very large and tasty. Wings were sticky, sweet, hot and savory... perfect with a beer. The poke comes with delicious rice and could easily be someone's entree and they'd be very happy with it. Happy to say our fam favorite entree (the ginger chicken salad) is just as I remember if not better due to the fact that it seems to have doubled in size! We all laughed when the salad came out cause it was so massive. I ate for 15 min and took home a doggie bag filled with an entire meal, needless to say the value is great. I just finished eating my take out from Lulu's and it was so, good I had to just jump on Yelp to let people know! Right now you can order for pick up online (20% off on your first order). I got my tried and true favorite: Bulgogi Beef Ginger Salad that comes with a delicious bag of crispy fried wontons that I wish could just buy and snack on daily. The portion of this salad is HUGE btw. I know everyone is a big fan of the peanut sesame noodles, but I wanted to try something different and I'm so very glad I did. My new favorite dish: Panang Curry Noodles. It comes with delicious grilled shrimp. The noodles are thick udon noodles which I'm very in love with right now. Amazing. Where has this been all my life? I'm so impressed. Would highly recommend. If you have a sweet tooth, I suggest the sesame balls. They're deep fried chewy mochi balls filled with red bean and sesame. Lulu's makes me happy because I really got into Godzilla as a kid and there's a lot homage paid to Godzilla and Japanese cartoons and manga stuff in general. So I feel youthful in here!!! The service is very attentive and friendly, they have a chip of good cheer on their shoulders, that's for sure. I do like the booth seating and art work which is seemingly all around you. The beignets were really super good, fluffy, hot chocolately - wow!!! The churros came out differently on two separate occasions and I would have to say that I like the stuffed chocolate as opposed to the chocolate sprinkled on top. The chicken wings came out different as well, it was chili style once and BBQy the second time. These inconsistencies are fine with me because I enjoyed it, the main courses were very tasty too. We had Lulu's for dinner on a student film set that I was working on last month and it absolutely blew us away! The peanut noodles were out-of-this-world as well as the fried rice. I think the real sleeper was the Ginger salad, we didn't expect much from a takeout salad but the dressing was so delicious I COULD NOT stop eating it with the crispy wontons haha. I went here with the wife and a friend after seeing a movie in Evanston. I had never even heard of this restaurant before even though it's close to the theater. The drinks are a good deal. I had a bottle (small) of sake for $8.00 and the wife ordered cold sake for $8.75. For the drinks alone, I would come back. We ordered crispy spring rolls and blistered green beans from the share menu. Both were good. The beans come with delicious slices of tofu. I ordered the ginger salad with grilled shrimp. This is good, but too heavy on the red cabbage. This dish is essentially a big bowl of coleslaw with shrimp and a massive pile of wontons on top. Next time I will order it without the wontons. The Vietnamese rice noodle salad with tofu that a friend ordered is not good. It tastes like lettuce and, again, a massive pile of red cabbage, floating in vinegar. I tasted this and wow is it strong. The taste of the noodles, and everything else, is overwhelmed by the vinegar. I would recommend using about one quarter the vinegar. read more

the food presentation was very appetizing and the atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy and dimly lit, very good for a date spot. however, the food itself disappointed me. i got the spicy dragon noodles with extra spice, but the sweetness and the saltiness of the noodles overpowered any other taste that i could experience. the vegetables were soaked in sauce and i ended up getting a headache from it. my friend got the curry noodles; but there was no resemblance of curry in there and all i could taste was sugar. it's surprising how someone could finish a whole plate by themselves when i couldn't even take 2 bites of the either dish without getting a headache. i hesitate to give this place a 1 star since the staff was so nice and the place was very pretty, but this definitely is not asian food. read more

I have mixed feelings when it comes to this new Lulu's. I've only been to the old Lulu's a few times, but that was my go-to place for udon noodle soup. When I heard Lulu's re-opened, I was looking forward to trying the udon that I missed. Much to my disappointment, their menu seemed a lot smaller than I last remembered it and the udon was gone. Additionally, prices were much higher than before. You will most likely have to pay $20+ for your portion of the meal and I think the pricing is too high for what you get. The location itself is small, but decor is minimal and clean. Service was great and fast. Food was overall tasty and I thought the presentation of the food was artistic and appealing. We frequent the old and new Lulu's quite a bit, but the new Lulu's is definitely an improvement over the old one and is one of our favorite restaurants in Evanston. The ambience is fun and cozy, with a lot of interesting and unique Japanese artwork. The kids are always excited when we are going to Lulu's, because there are small dinosaur toys by the welcome table for little ones to take. The food here is consistently delicious. Some of our favorites are the poke bowl (the best one in Evanston by a landslide), calamari, bento box, tonkatsu ramen (not "authentic" but delicious), panang curry noodles, and the Flan dessert. My return trip to this place was kind of disappointing. My wife ordered the Fat Rice Noodles, and the noodle was super salty. I gave it a bite and was shocked. Meant to go to Taco Diablo but were grabbing a bite before a movie and didn't have 30 minutes to wait for a table. So glad, because our expert was excellent. I had the shrimp udon and it intensely delicious. Huge shrimp, well cooked, tons of veggies, and a scrumptious fried onion cake. But the noodles! So flavorful. We had egg rolls, which had some type of almost sweet flavor to them. Also had the fried shrimp dumpling things, which were the highlight of the meal. I just finished my take out lunch from Lulu's and I had to dust off the Yelp settings and figure out my password to write this review. More and more these days I find it's important to support local small businesses, and Lulu's deserves rave reviews and support from the community. It's certainly one of my favorite Evanston restaurants. The server was nice, my food was ready when it was supposed to be, and my bento box was delicious and perfect. I don't know what they put in these peanut noodles, but daaaaamn. It's really special and makes me happy. My salad was so fresh and honestly, the bento is large enough for two meals or splitting. I love the variety and ability to customize to veggie only. Bento is where it's at. If you're ordering lunch or dinner, be sure to use their ordering system on the Lulu's website. I was surprised to see that overall that they only get 3.5 stars and it seems in my quick glance that most of the less positive reviews are around their prices and not their food. Lulu's isn't cheap -- that is true and I get it but I've never had a bad meal at or from Lulu's and in fact, almost always their food is very good to outstanding. Their salads -- amazing! Sesame noodles -- so yummy! Potato croquettes -- amazing! Their bento box is sooo yummy and beyond filling -- you can get two meals out of it. On top of everything, the customer service was fantastic. An appetizer we ordered was unavailable that day; the restaurant called me to apologize, took the item off my bill, and then gave me a free dessert to make up for it. Huge bibimbap bowl! Beautifully presented. It was one of the best bibimbap bowls I've ever had even though I've only had two in my life. Was happy to get a chance to check out Lulu's with a friend for dinner one night, I wasn't blown away, but it was not a bad experience either. The food is good, but I was hoping for cart-service. This spot felt a little more like tapas than dim sum. We had the egg rolls, sesame balls, potato croquettes, and peanut-sesame noodles (along with a beer or two). The egg rolls were particularly good and the prices felt appropriate. The service was attentive. The decor is interesting; focusing on primarily Japanese popular culture exported to the US. In some ways this seemed kind of strange since dim sum is a Chinese food tradition (I thought). This apparent misattribution combined with focus on commercialized pop culture icons created an interesting (but perhaps not intended by the restaurant) space to think about consumerism, intercultural exchange, and authenticity. In my visit on Friday night, it seemed popular with the NU undergrad crowd. I suppose this would be good if you are craving a small bite of some popular Asian dishes. read more
