Modern Chinese Cook Book…read more.. Just in case you're wondering what it stands for and no I had no idea but did notice a cookbook in the restaurant but still didn't put two and two together. This Chinese restaurant is located on the ground floor in Chinatown and from the outside you have no idea what they have to offer even as you enter this cozy spot dishes out some serious bites. Menu takes a moment to figure out as they have dishes but are able to serve it with various sauces/or protein and does have indications of the spiciness level which surely helps in the decision making and be mindful as it all are served family style. My very first meal in Chicago I was ready for anything and the first impression was impressive for me personally as everything came out fast and hot and done right along with lovely presentation a quick pic was all it took as we were hungry. - Sour Pickle and Fish Fillet Soup It had the numbing sauce which I didn't understand and was afraid until I tried it and actually loved it the sour picked paired perfectly and that numbing soup was just that lol but wasn't spicy just left literally an impression on my palate - Chicken Egg Roll was just that very crispy and delicious though the presentation was unique as it came with a bowl of sauce packets - Cheng Du Spicy Wonton was probably one of my favorite simple but full of flavor drenched with sauce as it had a kick but not too spicy - American Broccoli with Flank Steak the classic that was good veggies done just right and tender meat - Eggplant Spicy Garlic Sauce was another favorite though I love eggplant it was tender and saucy that was a tad salty but gave it a good kick - Cold Noodle with Sesame Sauce was the last that we ordered so I was already getting filled up but it was nice and light that did accent and balance out the rest of the meal. Service is very nice and friendly especially with all of our questions since it was our first time and didn't disappoint and can see why there's always a wait and yes it's worth it if you're ever in Chinatown. Thank you!

5 stars for the cold gluten salad and the flatbreads, 4 or 5 stars for the noodle soup. I'm…read morerounding up to 5 because, well, maybe I ordered wrong. The cold gluten salad is a true highlight here, with an impeccable springy texture and an absolutely perfect mix of chili oil and sesame in the seasoning. The flatbread was also a standout, being perfectly crunchy and flavorful alongside a cumin lamb with a good punch. I was less impressed by the hand-pulled noodles. The soup itself was fine, as were the lamb intestines (though I really prefer them grilled). However, for hand-stretched noodles, the noodles were just lacking and missing something. Maybe wheat noodles get better the further west you go, and it just isn't quite Lanzhou style.

The restaurant was almost completely empty, but the waitress started rushing me to order before I'd even had a minute to look at the menu. I told her I was still looking, but she came back shortly after asking me to order again, and eventually brought her iPad over and continued rushing me. I'm not sure what the hurry was when there were barely any customers. I ordered the biang biang noodles with lamb, and unfortunately, they were pretty disappointing. The noodle thickness was really inconsistent, so some parts were overcooked while others seemed undercooked. The flavor was okay, but nothing special. To make things even more awkward, the waitress brought out a lamb burger that I never ordered and insisted that it was on my order when she showed me the receipt. She eventually took it off, but it was frustrating to have to explain that I hadn't ordered something that she had entered herself. Overall, it was just an uncomfortable dining experience, from being rushed for no reason to the confusion over the extra item. The food was average at best, and I probably wouldn't come back. Ambiance was normal nothing special.

Our large group was accommodated easily, and we were served relatively quickly after an initial delay while we were waiting for someone to come by. Food came soon after that. We ordered a wide range of things: honey shrimp, beef tripe, pork intestine, Hong Kong style fried noodles. Everything here is solid and delicious. Portions are reasonable too. Ambience is nice, clean, and modern. Only issue while we were here is that some in our group tried to order their baked chicken over spaghetti and they were out of spaghetti. Interesting basic ingredient to be short on here, but rice was not a bad substitute. Would definitely come back here if ever back in Chicago!

Chi Cafe has been a Chinatown staple for as long as I can remember. Back before covid, it was the…read morego-to spot before a night out or after the clubs because they stayed open 24 hours on weekends. You can always count on Chi Cafe for a satisfying meal when hungover. Things have definitely changed over the years. After COVID, the hours became more limited, and the neighborhood has faced challenges that have unfortunately affected the area's late-night scene. It's sad but Chi Cafe still delivers when you're craving quick, comforting food. Whether it's a bowl of noodles, , baked rice dishes, Hong Kong-style cafe classics, or a late-night snack, the menu has plenty of options that satisfy those comfort food cravings. It's the kind of place where you know exactly what you're getting, and sometimes that's exactly what you want. The biggest downside is that prices have increased noticeably over the years while portions seem to have gone in the opposite direction. What used to feel like an incredible value now feels like a clear case of shrinkflation. The portions are smaller, and the bill is definitely higher than it used to be, which can be a little disappointing for longtime customers who remember the old days. Even with those changes, I still find myself coming back here just not as often. There's a nostalgia factor that's hard to replace, and the food continues to hit the spot when I'm looking for something warm, filling, and familiar. For me, Chi Cafe remains one of those places that may not be quite what it used to be, but it's still worth visiting when you're in the neighborhood and looking for a dependable meal.

HEAR ME OUT: "Replacing the old, visibly worn toilets and…read moreensuring the restrooms are thoroughly cleaned and properly maintained would be a reasonable and necessary step toward improving the customer experience. These are basic maintenance issues that should not be overlooked, especially in a restaurant that has been serving customers for years." I have been visiting this restaurant for at least five years, but unfortunately, my recent experience has led me to give it a two-star rating. My rating is not based on the food, but rather on the condition and cleanliness of the restrooms. I visited today with my 4-year-old niece, who needed to use the restroom. As you can imagine, discovering the condition of these facilities while accompanying a young child caused me considerable anxiety. Every parent or caregiver should be able to take a child into a public restroom without having to question whether the facilities are clean and sanitary. As a woman, restroom cleanliness is important to me, both as a customer and from a general hygiene standpoint. The restroom in the back area, located on the far right, was in unacceptable condition. The toilet appeared heavily worn, with visible residue and buildup, and there was even a spider sitting on the toilet. While I understand that fixtures can show signs of age, there is a difference between normal wear and tear and a lack of proper upkeep. I then tried the restroom next door, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, it was no different. The toilet was similarly worn, and a visibly filthy cleaning mop was sitting in a bucket next to the sink. Seeing these conditions in both restrooms was extremely disappointing and raised serious concerns about the overall cleanliness and maintenance of these facilities. I understand that a restaurant does not necessarily need the newest or most luxurious fixtures, but it should maintain clean, sanitary, and presentable restrooms. These facilities are used by customers and may also be used by employees, making proper hygiene and maintenance essential. I did not take pictures because I simply wanted to use the restroom in a RUSH considering I was with my 4 year old Neice. I also do not want to publicly embarrass the establishment by documenting and sharing photographs of these conditions. Instead, I decided to write this review in the hope that management will take these concerns seriously and make the necessary improvements. It is disappointing to see a restaurant I have patronized for at least five years allow its restrooms to fall into this condition. Unfortunately, this experience has changed my perception of the establishment, and I will NOT reconsider returning unless these concerns are addressed. Good food alone is not enough to maintain customer loyalty. Cleanliness, hygiene, and attention to detail matter just as much. I hope management takes this feedback constructively and uses it as an opportunity to make meaningful improvements. RESPECTFULLY: someone take pics... I simply could stomach it... (Also I do not recall using there restrooms often as I visited before - nonetheless- now is the time to replace the toilets) PLEASE REPLACE THE TOILETS JOY YEE NOODLE ~EvaLaDiva

Cant remember exactly what we had, it's a picture menu, and as the waiter didnt seem to speak much English, it was point and shoot. All of it was distinctively yum. Like just about every place you can go in Chinatown, the premises appear slightly run-down, in that "we've been here for a hundred years, and you're coming here to eat, not ogle the architecture" way. Turned out not to be cheap-bill for 2 = $80 + change without any booze. But the quality of the food was over the top. Don't mind paying the freight, when the feed is worth it.
