Back in the day, after a weekend of clubbing & bar hopping, the friends would convene for a tasty bowl of pho, Sunday afternoons after church of course. If HL had the hours, we would have had that first bowl at 5 am and then headed straight to church. Today, HL has stiff competition nearby but that hasn't caused much change to how they operate. (Unfortunate) In the past year I've been back for nostalgic reasons seeking to enjoy entrees other than hot soup with noodles. Takeaways.. For whatever reasons their cook will kill proteins twice. In simple terms, the proteins are not prepared similar in tenderness. Beef & pork chop were already dry (well done). Few pieces of beef were medium well. Still juicy. For the expenditure it's a bummer to eat like this. A week back I ordered a very affordable ($10) sandwich with grilled beef. The meat was too hard to chew and bread, I wish they provided a newer loaf. All the vegetables included in the different entrees were fresh but the meats were overcooked. Being that this was similar to my last experience a few months back, it's the chef or how they prepare meats prior to adding them into entrees. I would imagine proteins are generally cooked in advance (solo) and then flash prepared with the entree of choice, which could attribute to why meats take on an overcooked texture. What a nice little place! I couldn't tell you if it was authentic Vietnamese but I can say plenty of Vietnamese were eat there that night. Savory flavors in a nice litte restaurant along Lincoln Avenue. Worth a look. We enjoyed the Catfish is a clay pot. Such a complex of different types savory in one litte pot. We also ordered the Stir Fry Chicken in Spicy Lemongrass. Not too spicy but excellent flavor profile on the Lemon Grass. I didn't know that could be spicy. Delicious!!!! The restaurant was very cold inside. I asked them to give us heat and they raised it ,though two hours later it was cold inside. The Pho which we split was good. We asked for two bowls and given tiny bowls where the sprouts had to be broken by hand to fit into bowl. Never asked if we want hot tea. A very solid Vietnamese place! We have returned many times. Restaurant is bigger inside than it looks. Parking is not an issue. They also do a brisk takeout business. We typically get the shrimp spring rolls; bún with beef and eggroll; and either the grilled eggplant or the fried rice noodles with tofu. The presentation is nice and the food is always delicious. Been dining here since they were a few stores down on Lincoln, years back. The pho broth is on the sweeter side compared to others, but I like my food sweet. I also order the egg rolls and shrimp spring rolls with my pho. I also frequently order steamed rice noodle as well. This area must be hot spot for pho because there're 2 more Vietnamese pho within a few blocks. I'm guessing the servers are owners because they're really dedicated and know how to handle things well. A family operated business- theyre also always there. I haven't had their hot pot but I hear it's good, so I'll try it one day. Ok, Hoanh Long was my lifesaver as far as being one of the few restaurants open on Christmas day. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to narrow down my search of Vietnamese restaurants within a radius of the area. Hoanh Long was ranked number two out of pho restaurants which was what I craved at the time. The menu online as well as pictured is very organized! I really loved how options were separated; it made ordering easy for someone like me who is a vegetarian because everything vegetarian was in one section. I ordered the Mi Xao Chay which consisted of egg noodle stir fried with vegetable & tofu. It took thirty-nine minutes from the time of my order to the arrival of it at my doorstep via Grubhub. The Mi Xao Chay smelled fantastic! Its portion size was satisfying as well as its taste. The one thing I will likely do away with next time is the tofu because the vegetables were satisfying enough. I had a pleasant ordering experience with this restaurant. We wanted to try a new place for Vietnamese food so I looked up trusty Yelp and I saw Hoanh Long. It was not too far from where I was so I decided to launch into this place. As I was looking for parking along the street I noticed it was rather sparse inside, which had me questioning my reason for going to this restaurant. But perhaps it is a hidden gem. It was after all 5pm so not really busy yet. But by 6-6:30, I kept seeing Vietnamese families coming in. That always signals to me authenticity and that I've found the right place. I had the pho with steak and tendon and I really liked the soup - had alot of tendon! It's a tad on the sweeter side and I really liked it compares to some others - yes I did drink all the soup. The service was pretty good it's a family owned business and they do a reliable job. My wife had a seafood noodle soup which had hints of fish sauce and was savory and fantastic as I tried that a bit as well. She said that she'll probably order that noodle dish from now on since it really suited her (think it's #41 or something - seems like you just got to order random #'s in these kind of restaurants and just be surprised at what comes out of the kitchen). I think her soup came with this awesome hot sauce, it's a must try it was great flavor, not just spice. I really liked the restaurant and would be back if I'm in the area. Right off the main road this restaurant is easy to look past. I've driven past here so many times without even giving it a second thought. When I found this restaurant on Yelp I thought I would give it a try. We came for an early dinner on a Saturday night around 5pm and the place only had one other table. I at first was confused how it gained such a high rating with such few customers. Come 6pm and on the place was packed. We ordered an order of pho - #31 and another noodle soup #41. This was superb. I'm always looking to order something other than pho at a Vietnamese restaurant and this dish hit the spot. The menu here is extensive so we will have to come back to eat more. My husband says this is our new spot! Although I thought the beef pho special was a bit on the sweet side, I really appreciated how they were able to accommodate my changes to the order. I'm 8 months pregnant so I had a few requests to leave some ingredients out and cook the beef fully. Anyway, the real winner was my husband's orange chicken. This place is one of my favorite Viet restaurants and I consider it a special treat when I can trek to this neighborhood from my suburbia. Granted, I've only been here a few times and would LOVE to be able to visit it a lot more if their location was closer to me. But what makes up for it in distance, for me is authenticity and the diverse menu of Vietnamese dishes that you won't see at any of the typical Asian-fusion Pho places. In fact, they have a lot of 'homecooked' style entrees that my foodie spirit just craves for and would start a faucet of drools when I hear of it. Unfortunately, this was a bit of a bust. We wanted Chinese food late and saw this place is open until 10. I know this place is Vietnamese, but we wanted to try the Chinese food. My mom is allergic to crab so she asked of the crab Rangoon had actual crab. She was told no. We for the crab Rangoon and spring roll. However, as soon as the spring rolls were dropped off, the server said "oh, those hade crab" and she walked off. My dad and I decided to start eating them, but we sent them back as they were super fishy. They swapped out the meat spring roll, but it was in a clear wonton instead of the crunchy shell as I expected. We quickly gulped those down as they were not that great. We went work Kung Bao chicken, orange chicken, and chicken fried rice. The chicken in the Kung Bao and Orange sauce were way over cooked and tasted tough. The orange sauce was also very bland. The chicken fried rice was actually pretty good. It was a little salty, but the rice and chicken were cooked great. While it pains me to give such a low review, this place was pretty bad. This has become the family's go-to place for Vietnamese food. Sometimes the service and parking can be iffy but the food is so delicious! Some of my favorites: Goi Du Du Thit Bo Nuong (papaya salad with grilled beef) - the salad is so good, the beef on tope tends to be a bit dry but it's all about the spicy papaya salad! Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe with shrimp & pork) - it comes with lettuce and herbs and pickled veggies so you can make a lettuce wrap with the fried crepe-y goodness. Pho - all of the pho's I've tried are so good and warm and comforting on a cold day. I literally get those three pretty much every time I go and you should too :D The hot pot is also good for sharing, we ordered a seafood one which came with lots of veggies, noodles, and of course seafood. It can get busy, even during off hours surprisingly, but the location is so much more convenient if you're coming from the burbs. The decor is simple, the restaurant is always clean. I had an overall great experience here. The atmosphere is very pleasant, and they have a few booths along one wall which is nice if you want something a little more intimate. We wanted something vegetarian so browsed that section of the menu. The waitress was so helpful and recommended things she thought we'd like. We ordered the #124 Banh Xeo Chay - a vegeterian Vietnamese crepe. I really enjoyed it and would totally order it again! We also got some egg noodles stir fried with tofu & vegetables. For dessert, the green tea cheesecake. We were satisfied with everything! I have friends who go here often and it seems the quality is pretty consistent. I'm a huge fan of Vietnamese cuisine, and while the selection in Austin is above average, it's nothing outta this world. Not really - - to put it simply - hot noodle soup on a cold day sounded like the perfect scenario. It wasn't too busy so it was quiet here, the large tables are spread out, and it's very clean. Awww - it almost felt like a special "date" w/ chivalry and the works - - but the thing here is he's married, we like women, and there's no possibility for a kiss goodnight. Regardless, there are so many appetizing options on the menu, and that tends to make me fickle, so John takes the lead and orders three dishes: Papaya Salad w/ Grilled Beef, Pho Combination, and the Hot Pot. We finally had a chance to try this place. It's reputation for good Vietnamese food is well deserved. It's also BYOB with no corkage fees. I was actually surprised that they had wine glasses too. Prices are reasonable and service was prompt and friendly. I am so glad that authentic Vietnamese cuisine has expanded outside of the Argygle/Uptown neighborhood. Exciting news for an avid pho-eater. With the weather getting colder recently, I'm been ordering pho more often. Whether I'm in the surburbs or in the city, I feel like I'm noticing Vietnamese joints popping up everywhere. Either that or I'm looking out for it more, but my pho radar is constantly ON. That being said, I was very satisified with the pho here. I came here on a Sunday evening with a relative from out of town. As we were leaving and hopping back into the car, we asked each other what we would rate it - both of us saying "five stars" without hesitation. Kid-friendly, open spaces, attentive service. This is definitely a family spot, with a good mix of neighborhood residents (I presume), and reflected the diversity of North Park. Our server came by our table mulitple times, ensuring that our water glasses were filled. A sheet of specials was taped to the wall by our table, specifying items not currently on the menu... ...tempting, but our mission did not waver. We both ordered the #26 pho: hoanh long special beef noodle soup (a mix of all their meats, including meatball, tendon, tripe etc.). It was delicious and hit the spot. Their garnish was fresh, and had plenty of jalapenos. I happily soaked these into the broth, which was aromatic, rich and full-bodied, exactly as it should be, and full of chopped green onion. I also liked how they sprinkled black pepper on the pho right before serving it. A bonus for presentation and extra flavor. This is a great spot if you live in the northern suburbs (Hey Yelp Northshore! This place is awesome!) and don't want to head all to way to Uptown for some authentic pho. The closest spot for pho used to be Joy Yee's in Evanston, but now Hoanh Long in North Park will be my next go-to whenever I'm back in the Skokie/Evanston area. read more
