We finally had a chance to try this place. It's reputation for good Vietnamese food is well deserved. It's also BYOB with no corkage fees. I was actually surprised that they had wine glasses too. I am so glad that authentic Vietnamese cuisine has expanded outside of the Argygle/Uptown neighborhood. Exciting news for an avid pho-eater. With the weather getting colder recently, I'm been ordering pho more often. Whether I'm in the surburbs or in the city, I feel like I'm noticing Vietnamese joints popping up everywhere. Either that or I'm looking out for it more, but my pho radar is constantly ON. That being said, I was very satisified with the pho here. I came here on a Sunday evening with a relative from out of town. As we were leaving and hopping back into the car, we asked each other what we would rate it - both of us saying "five stars" without hesitation. Kid-friendly, open spaces, attentive service. This is definitely a family spot, with a good mix of neighborhood residents (I presume), and reflected the diversity of North Park. Our server came by our table mulitple times, ensuring that our water glasses were filled. A sheet of specials was taped to the wall by our table, specifying items not currently on the menu... ...tempting, but our mission did not waver. We both ordered the #26 pho: hoanh long special beef noodle soup (a mix of all their meats, including meatball, tendon, tripe etc.). It was delicious and hit the spot. Their garnish was fresh, and had plenty of jalapenos. I happily soaked these into the broth, which was aromatic, rich and full-bodied, exactly as it should be, and full of chopped green onion. I also liked how they sprinkled black pepper on the pho right before serving it. A bonus for presentation and extra flavor. This is a great spot if you live in the northern suburbs (Hey Yelp Northshore! This place is awesome!) and don't want to head all to way to Uptown for some authentic pho. The closest spot for pho used to be Joy Yee's in Evanston, but now Hoanh Long in North Park will be my next go-to whenever I'm back in the Skokie/Evanston area. read more

I hardly ever come through the Rogers Park neighborhood, but we were hungry after a day of work and watching friends create a new sidewalk. We ordered banh xeo (looked good, huge appetizer), papaya salad with grilled beef (confused it with Thai spicy papaya salad, but it was still tasty. I've never had it with meat before) and pho with rare beef and tripe (a sweet broth, but still very flavorful. The bean sprouts were fresh). If you're ordering pho with rare beef, please remember to submerge meat underneath the noodles so it can cook in the broth. No one is trying to serve you raw meat unless it's meant to be a tartare. I think that's typical of Asian restaurants? Though their pho is on the sweeter side, this place has a wide variety of dishes on their menu! They've also added some seasonal/new dishes like Vietnamese escargot. I've had better Vietnamese egg rolls. I think they freeze their eggrolls in batches then freeze them. Every time I've ordered it I know it isn't fresh because there are super dry corners on the wonton wrappers. Usually from being kept in the freezer for long periods of time. As a lover of viet eggrolls, this disappoints me. Their pork chop rice is a go-to as well for me! I like coming here to crave pho. My favorite is #29 Pho tai bo vien (rare steak and meatball). I like how the soup is flavorful not too heavy way, but it's light and my stomach is not going to hurt after I ate. Other than pho, I don't find any good dishes. Even though I come here with my husband at least 1-2 times a month and keep exploring variety of dishes, they are not outstanding. Fried rice isn't crunchy nor dried like usual Chinese ones, Vietnamese crepe is too oily, etc... So now I'm afraid to try new ones and regret. This place for me is the best pho around this neighborhood and closest from my home. I think 3.5 stars but I make it 3 stars with my hope that I could get more choices of good dishes. read more

Came in here to have Mother's Day brunch. We tried four different dishes and ordered two Coi Cuon (shrimp spring roll). The Pho noodle (#23) was great. Seafood noodle (#64) was a great selection as well. My son had Stir Fried Chicken with Saté, and it was prepared with slightly fried chicken with an unique texture. The only disappointing choice was my Stirred Fried Fish. It was over-priced and only came with a few pieces of catfish filets. It was so bad that I forgot to write down the number. For a Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago, I will have to give a shout out for the extensive menu that covers the main grounds for Vietnamese cuisine. Aside from that, their food is not super memorable. I ordered the hu tieu thap cam, which had squid, shrimp, meat, hu tieu noodles, fried onion, green onions, and a whole lotta garlic. The broth was good and you could tell that it was made from scratch and was a good kind of "sweet", which means that it has been made at length with a sufficient amount of bones. The garlic overpowered any flavor I should have been tasting from the broth and noodles though. My relatives and I came here after 2 more well-known Vietnamese establishments were closed. The pho ga did not meet any expectations that my aunt had and their pork chops were "meh" according to my cousin. Really, having this as one of the few remaining options was the only way that I would come back here. Plenty of parking at the shopping plaza with Dressbarn across the street, unless you want to go for the street parking in front of the restaurant. read more

I came in today for lunch and my girlfriend got a bowl of pho. Halfway eating through it. We find a string of the steel brush in our food. I pointed it out the waiter. No word. Just went to back of kitchen to notify the cook what happened. Fine. I asked for a the check and noticed they still charged us for he bowl of pho. So you really want me to pay for this knowingly the food was not satisfactory? If ingested it could scratch your insides and who knows what would happen coming out the other end. It would probably be painful. I had to ask him to remove this charge... When you eat here next time and if you do. Make sure you examine every bite you eat. I tried out Hoanh Long last year and had a positive experience, so when my favorite pho restaurant in the Skokie area (5 Lua) was closed on Tuesdays, I felt comfortable recommending this joint to my friends. I am shocked by how much the quality of the pho has dropped in just a year. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet: The litmus test of a good pho restaurant. The broth was beefy and hot enough - good start. Noodles were also good texture. Things went south from there. All the meat in the pho (eg. meatball, brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, etc) was almost inedible. Just really really chewy. Seriously, it was like chewing rubber. I am so disappointed and felt so bad for my friends who were too polite to say anything negative but the fact that they didn't finish their bowl said it all. The one person at my table who genuinely enjoyed her bowl of pho ordered a veggie pho (with no chewy meat). Also note... the veggie pho is still a beef broth. Tried this place after a friend's recommendation. From the looks outside the restaurant had a decent amount of business so it wasn't empty. The waiters attention was on point, they continued to make sure we were okay and always taken care of which I highly appreciate. I got two things off the menu Durian Smoothie - I'd take a pass at this one. I love durian and I know how it taste. The smoothie had a very small hint of it, but I feel like it was mostly mixed with other stuff that killed the durian flavor. I've had better at other places. Ca Kho To - basically steamed fish in a claypot. This dish would of been so much better had the sauce not been that salty. I don't have a salty Pallet so the string salty flavor was a no for me. Wanted to try another Pho place other than King Pho and found this place on Yelp. This is a decent size restaurant with street parking outside. The servers were nice, but there were only 3 workers and one of the lady there as pregnant so it took a while for us to order and for them to cater to our requests for straws, water, and limes. But it was all good because we were not in a rush. I got the #26 Pho Special with the meatball, tripe, beef and tendon. The soup base was pretty strong and not what I'm used to. They gave a lot of noodles and like all Vietnamese places, they cut up the meat balls to make it seem like there is a lot in the bowl. The beef was delicious and they gave me a lot of bean sprouts, which I loved. They also gave likes that are juicy and not dried up so that was a plus. I have to say that this place was just alright. This was a great opportunity for me to persuade my guy to try something different. His favorite pho restaurant on Argyle was closed and I was secretly happy. I didn't like their broth very much and always ended up ordering something else off the menu. So I decided to give Hoanh Long another shot. We arrived here around 9pm (they close at 10), and the restaurant was almost full, with only one table open. Definitely a good sign. I never liked going to an empty restaurant, and this place seems very popular. We started off the meal with the fried tofu appetizer. It's a really simple appetizer, but we loved it. It reminded me of the fried tofu with soy/garlic/vinegar sauce dip that my mom used to make for me as a snack after elementary school. In fact, it was the exact same dish. I approve. We both ordered the pho tai. As mentioned in my previous post, it comes with fresh basil, bean sprouts, lime wedges, and jalapeno slices. The beef was rare when it arrived, very tender and flavorful. They give you a small side dish of that heavenly garlic and chili paste oil. I added a bit of salt and lime juice and it became a dip for the beef. The rice noodles were PERFECT. The best I've had so far. They were perfectly chewy. Nobody likes limp, soft.... noodles. Heh. I also ordered their fresh lemonade soda, "Soda Chanh" . Wow! This is probably my favorite rendition of lemonade ever. At other Vietnamese restaurants, I've had the fresh lime juice (excellent) and salty lemonade (also very good), but Hoanh Long's lemonade soda is my favorite. It was a blend of sweet, sour, salty (just a lil bit), and carbonation. I'm definitely ordering this drink again next time. One more thing. They give you chopsticks and porcelain soup spoons with your soup. They're not piled together with the condiments and napkins like they are at other Vietnamese restaurants. I thought that was a nice touch. It's the little things that make a difference. Those were the worst meatballs ever. The meatballs have this weird, rubbery consistency; very plastic-y. Goi Ga - chicken salad. Fresh, crisp vegetables, shredded white meat chicken. Bo Thai Canh - lemon beef salad. Crisp vegetables and heavy on the fish sauce. Banh Cuon Thit Bo - rice cake rolls served with vietnamese beef. Make your own springs rolls at the table. The herbs - mint, thai basil, and cilantro were very fresh. Not enough grilled beef, though. Canh Ga Chien - fried chicken wings. Very basic fried wings, no batter or heavy seasoning. Bo Lui Nuong - charcoal marinated beef. Skewers of grilled beef wrapped around some type of sausage. I wasn't expecting the sausage, because it's not in the menu description, but tasty nonetheless. Tom Sate Hoanh Long - shrimp sauteed with hoanh long special sauce. The sauce is sweet and spicy chili sauce. Mi Xao Bo - stir fried egg noodle beef. These noodles are actually fried and crispy, almost looks like ramen noodles. Wouldn't order again. Com Chien Bo - beef fried rice. Wasn't expecting their fried rice to be good, but I loved it. They use medium-grain rice. Com Tam Suon Apla - rice dish with marinated pork grill & egg. One of my favorite dishes. The pork is well-marinated and grilled. The sunny side up egg is perfect with rice. Banh Xeo Chay - vegetarian pan cake. The vegetarian version of banh xeo has tofu, bean sprouts, and other veggies in it. Hoanh Long has to be hands down the best overall Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago. You might find a few dishes here and there (like the pork chops) slightly better, scattered among the many different restaurants. But that's generally how it is right? You might have one specialty dish that the restaurant is known for but everything else is just garbage. But, I'm telling you, you're dealing with maybe a 4:1 odds with Hoanh Long when going pound for pound with another restaurant. So no! I have not eaten at every single Viet restaurant in Chicago, nor have I eaten every single dish at Hoanh Long. But has Tyson fought every single boxer in the circuit? No! So I'm calling these sports book odds in one of my favorite sports called EATING! This place certainly does not have the same sentiment as dining in "Viet town" but if my relatives want to try a good representation of Viet food in Chicago, this is the first place I would take them. So here's the sports recap: The broth in the pho was very tasty and it won the Eastern Conference finals. The simmered salmon with tomato felt as good as when Federer won the French open. read more

I have absolutely no complaints about the food. The hot pot is always on point. It is always accompanied by many vegetables. I loooooove coming here when I am craving canh chua (sour soup) and and ca kho to (clay pot caramelized fish). The restaurant is large and able to accommodate large groups. The bathroom is always clean. There's easy street (Meter) parking right out front. The one complaint I have, thus only 4 stars? They are so "chill" there, meaning they don't greet you right away when you walk in... so you're standing there awkwardly waiting to be seated, they don't check to see if you're doing ok or if you need something, you always gotta ask for more water... and you always gotta ask for the bill. read more

I am SO GLAD I don't have to put up with the annoying drive to Argyle St. (or put up with the smelly red line) ever again for my fix of Vietnamese food. I have been wanting to try this place for a while but usually just default to Argyle for convenience because I didn't know where "North Park" was. Derp. Turns out it is literally the easiest drive away from me, and I've gone past here so many times without noticing. Walking in and seeing tons of non-Asian diners (unlike on Argyle St. where there are actual Vietnamese people eating in those restaurants) made me a little skeptical. But we stuck with pho and banh xeo, tacked on a random squid dish and took our chances. And it was good! Their pho was a lot sweeter than I am used to, but it's so balanced that if you just slurp the unaltered soup you can truly detect every flavoring agent in its appropriate proportion in the broth. Another huge plus is that the meat here actually tasted good! I always get the combination pho anywhere, and most times a lot of the meats just don't taste very good (due to either cooking or quality, I guess)and I eat around them for the soup and noodles and onions, but not this time! I also like the chili oil they serve on the side, as an alternative to sriracha. Banh xeo... very good. Something about it is just a bit more aromatic and flavorful, and it was thin and crispy just the way it should be (ahem... other restaurants.) By the time we shared banh xeo and pho, neither of us had any room for the squid. The bites we tried were a little salty, but tastes good if a bit generic. It's like salt and pepper squid (as in battered and fried) with an extra spicy/sweet sauce on top. Kinda ruins the crispiness but oh well. as good as, if not tons better than argyle + convenient location. Super win. read more

The family loves coming here! I don't know why it took me sooooo long to write a review on this place... but here goes... Definite must try... My mom's fave are the Seafood egg rolls - these babies are crispy and tasty! cat fish spring rolls (my fave) - the catfish is covered with peanuts and hoison sauce and scallions! ... you need to make the spring rolls yourself but thats ok with me because the fish is so delicious and this dish is quite healthy my brother's fave #64 (beef noodles) - its basically like a chinese dish but with crispy fat noodles... and veggies and beef etc etc... very tasty dish ... also ask for the crispy noodles on the side so it doesn't get soggy throughout the meal.. chicken salad - this salad is different but in a good way! fresh tasting ingredients - remember if you don't like a lot of spice ask them to mildly flavor it otherwise it could be too hot to handle... #23 beef pho - pretty good pho! can't complain about it. You can skip out on... seafood pho - we came here once on a friday during Lent and ordered this.... and it was a mistake. We've been to other places that offer seafood pho and actually put various seafood in the pho. My cousins and I were super hungry so we decided to come to this place. It had pretty good ratings on Yelp and it was opened until 11pm on a Saturday so why not? As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and seated promptly. Because we were so hungry, we ordered right away. We all ordered the Pho Hoanh Long Special #23! It came out in about fifteen minutes and the portion size to price was a nice ratio. It had very flavorful broth and the beef brisket was very tender. Lots of noodles too! I do wish that the broth was a bit warmer. The smoothies were good but they were $4 which is more expensive than other places. The server was mildly friendly and she did what she needed to do. If you're in the area or looking for some good pho, I definitely recommend this place, and suggest getting their pho tai. The pho tai is very simple, with just beef slices and noodles (bean sprouts, basil, jalapeños slices on the side). There are no strange looking meats or overpowering flavors. Lastly, their avocado bubble tea is seriously the best avocado bubble tea I've ever had.... The thick, creamy, and sweet avocado taste is amazing. It definitely tastes better than it might sound. Hi: Based on Mistey's review and recommendation, my wife and I trekked up this far away restaurant and checked out the pho, goi cuon, and goi ga (to go). Ok, not very exciting, but this is how we compare Vietnamese restaurants. The pho was more expensive than the average Argyle joint, but the quality was good and the bowl very large and filled with stuff. I felt the tendon could have been more tender, but the beef "tai" was fantastic. The goi cuon were nothing special - I prefer them to be wrapped a bit tighter, but what really distinguished this place was two small peanut sauce dipping bowls, one for my wife and one for me. So simple and easy for the restaurant and much appreciated. Jack's rave reviews for the goi ga made me order the dish - I ate it at home alongside some homemade thai yellow curry and it was delicious. Service was attentive and pleasant. As we were leaving I checked out the flyer of specials and the waiter came over to recommend the bouillabase dish. Next time we will return to try that dish. read more

Pho-real? Pho-king-awesome! Yep. Viet food. Nothing short of amazing this place is. My sister took me here for a quick bite to eat. She told me that she no longer needs to travel far to fix her pho cravings. We ordered our pho: Sliced brisket and meatballs. The broth was so fragrant and the meat was soft and tender. I was in pure bliss. We also got the rice paper wrapped fresh veggie, shrimp, basil, mint, and vermecelli noodle roll with the hoisin peanut sauce. I've been eating here every since it opened and I've been pleased almost every time with the food. There was two times when i ordered pho that the noodles were still kinda hard that i had to let it sit the in the broth for a while to let it cook. I've been there many times so having this happen twice isn't that bad. Every once in a while I try something else on the menu even though the pho is good. Frog legs, hot pot or whatever special they have has been awesome. The main thing that gets me for this place is the location, the only time i don't go here for pho is on Mondays when it is closed and I am forced to drive over to argyle.
