Bo Luc lac. Cubed beef that is pan seared and tossed with vegetables and marinade. Ample sauce included.

The OG pho spot situated in the Peterson park neighborhood now over thirty years? Back in the day, after a weekend of clubbing & bar hopping, the friends would convene for a tasty bowl of pho, Sunday afternoons after church of course. If HL had the hours, we would have had that first bowl at 5 am and then headed straight to church. Today, HL has stiff competition nearby but that hasn't caused much change to how they operate. (Unfortunate) In the past year I've been back for nostalgic reasons seeking to enjoy entrees other than hot soup with noodles. Takeaways.. For whatever reasons their cook will kill proteins twice. In simple terms, the proteins are not prepared similar in tenderness. Beef & pork chop were already dry (well done). Few pieces of beef were medium well. Still juicy. For the expenditure it's a bummer to eat like this. A week back I ordered a very affordable ($10) sandwich with grilled beef. The meat was too hard to chew and bread, I wish they provided a newer loaf. All the vegetables included in the different entrees were fresh but the meats were overcooked. Being that this was similar to my last experience a few months back, it's the chef or how they prepare meats prior to adding them into entrees. I would imagine proteins are generally cooked in advance (solo) and then flash prepared with the entree of choice, which could attribute to why meats take on an overcooked texture. Add to that their inflationary pricing.. It's expensive for sautéed vegetables. The protein a waste but my photographs look appetizing.

A true hidden gem! I will forever come here for the great and quick service. The pork chops are the way to my heart. There's a lot of seating in the dimly lit dining area, it's a great spot to hide away from the traffic outside. The staff is so friendly and accommodating, seriously a great spot for friends and family to gather.

The best Soy sauce i have tried to date

What a nice little place! I couldn't tell you if it was authentic Vietnamese but I can say plenty of Vietnamese were eat there that night. Savory flavors in a nice litte restaurant along Lincoln Avenue. Worth a look. We enjoyed the Catfish is a clay pot. Such a complex of different types savory in one litte pot. We also ordered the Stir Fry Chicken in Spicy Lemongrass. Not too spicy but excellent flavor profile on the Lemon Grass. I didn't know that could be spicy. Delicious!!!! Last but not least I recommend everyone get a bottle of the soy sauce they keep at their tables. This stuff was BOLD without being salty. I'm definitely getting a bottle for home. If you use Soy Sauce in your cooking, this is a MUST HAVE. ENJOY FOLLOW ME for more reviews

I'm gatekeeping this place. Best pho in Chicagoland area. Flavorful broth with generous portions of meat! Also great smoothies! Try it and you'll agree with me :)

Uncooked wontons

Service was ok, but food was horrible. Bún bò Huế didn't taste like bún bò Huế at all, and had coconut flavor ???? . Mì wonton but 3 pieces of wontons were uncooked, and overcooked meat and imitation crab. I let the owner know and she said she didn't know, she would ask a cook. Definitely never go back there again.

Been dining here since they were a few stores down on Lincoln, years back. The pho broth is on the sweeter side compared to others, but I like my food sweet. I also order the egg rolls and shrimp spring rolls with my pho. I also frequently order steamed rice noodle as well. This area must be hot spot for pho because there're 2 more Vietnamese pho within a few blocks. I'm guessing the servers are owners because they're really dedicated and know how to handle things well. A family operated business- theyre also always there. I haven't had their hot pot but I hear it's good, so I'll try it one day. Every time I go, there's always at least one table that has their seafood hot pot. It has its own distinctive smell but I'm definitely up for a challenge!

Ok, Hoanh Long was my lifesaver as far as being one of the few restaurants open on Christmas day. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to narrow down my search of Vietnamese restaurants within a radius of the area. Hoanh Long was ranked number two out of pho restaurants which was what I craved at the time. The menu online as well as pictured is very organized! I really loved how options were separated; it made ordering easy for someone like me who is a vegetarian because everything vegetarian was in one section. I ordered the Mi Xao Chay which consisted of egg noodle stir fried with vegetable & tofu. It took thirty-nine minutes from the time of my order to the arrival of it at my doorstep via Grubhub. The Mi Xao Chay smelled fantastic! Its portion size was satisfying as well as its taste. The one thing I will likely do away with next time is the tofu because the vegetables were satisfying enough. I had a pleasant ordering experience with this restaurant. As like I, if you are ever looking for an option, let alone an option open on Christmas, then look no further than Hoanh Long. ~Blessings~   Thomas G

We wanted to try a new place for Vietnamese food so I looked up trusty Yelp and I saw Hoanh Long. It was not too far from where I was so I decided to launch into this place. As I was looking for parking along the street I noticed it was rather sparse inside, which had me questioning my reason for going to this restaurant. But perhaps it is a hidden gem. It was after all 5pm so not really busy yet. But by 6-6:30, I kept seeing Vietnamese families coming in. That always signals to me authenticity and that I've found the right place. I had the pho with steak and tendon and I really liked the soup - had alot of tendon! It's a tad on the sweeter side and I really liked it compares to some others - yes I did drink all the soup. The service was pretty good it's a family owned business and they do a reliable job. My wife had a seafood noodle soup which had hints of fish sauce and was savory and fantastic as I tried that a bit as well. She said that she'll probably order that noodle dish from now on since it really suited her (think it's #41 or something - seems like you just got to order random #'s in these kind of restaurants and just be surprised at what comes out of the kitchen). I think her soup came with this awesome hot sauce, it's a must try it was great flavor, not just spice. I really liked the restaurant and would be back if I'm in the area. Parking could be metered out front, I found parking on a side street.

Spicy sauce to go with #41

Right off the main road this restaurant is easy to look past. I've driven past here so many times without even giving it a second thought. When I found this restaurant on Yelp I thought I would give it a try. We came for an early dinner on a Saturday night around 5pm and the place only had one other table. I at first was confused how it gained such a high rating with such few customers. Come 6pm and on the place was packed. We ordered an order of pho - #31 and another noodle soup #41. This was superb. I'm always looking to order something other than pho at a Vietnamese restaurant and this dish hit the spot. The menu here is extensive so we will have to come back to eat more. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean and spacious.

Lovely Vietnamese restaurant. We went for a slightly late dinner Saturday night and it was busy but no wait, which gave us a good impression. Food was hot and fresh and the portion sizes were great. Good variety on the menu, lots of things to try - but you can never go wrong with a bowl of pho.

I like this restaurant, even though we've only had they're soups. We love shrimp noodle soup. It's not too expensive and the taste is great.

Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The black pepper beef tenderloin is velvet-soft, glossy, and aggressively peppery in a way that makes you order extra rice just to survive the happiness. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive. Portions are straight out of the 90s--massive trays that could feed a family of four for under $15. Cash-only, BYOB, and everything comes out blazing hot in under ten minutes even when the place is slammed. The ladies running the show are legends: fast, funny, and they'll roast you (lovingly) if you can't handle the spice level you asked for. If you leave Chicago without hitting Dai Yee's at least once (preferably at 1 a.m. with a six-pack), you didn't really experience the city. This is real-deal, no-filter, soul-satisfying Chinese food that reminds you why we fall in love with restaurants in the first place. Dai Yee's isn't just a restaurant; it's a Chicago institution in the making. I'd wait in line in a blizzard for those smelts. See you at midnight.

Before that, I…read morechecked out a few eateries on the 4th floor of the Nordstrom building, but nothing really stood out, and honestly, none of them seemed very busy and the one restaurant Lao Sze Chuan was way too expensive, $30+ entrees were average and the place wasn't busy at all. So I decided to try Shang Noodle, which was tucked away on a side street off Grand Ave., just steps from Michigan Ave. It's across from the Nordstrom building, past Labriola's, down some steps and about a block away located on the south side of the street. As soon as I walked in, and I wasn't expecting this but the restaurant was extremely loud and nearly every seat was taken and everybody seemed to be enjoying themself, families, couples and groups. I figured that was a good sign and it signaled to me that the food was probably good! At first, the host wanted me to sit at the bar, which I politely declined because I don't usually sit at bars, also, I was there to eat, not pick up somebody! I noticed a small table open, pointed it out, and he kindly let me take it. No 'tude either! As far as my server goes, she was efficient, friendly, and very helpful with recommendations since it was my first visit and probably because I didn't look like the other customers who were more familiar with the cuisine. She suggested the pot stickers over the hot and sour soup, and the beef Chow Fun instead of chicken Chow Fun. The pot stickers were a little small, but crispy and very tasty. I also asked for some sweet and sour sauce on the side which I'm glad I did because it paired nicely with the pot stickers instead of that plain vinegar sauce they usually serve you. For my main dish, I ordered the char-grilled beef Chow Fun. The portion size was more than generous, and the char-grilled beef had a great umami flavor. A few of the rice noodles were a bit firm, likely undercooked, but overall though it was quite enjoyable. What I appreciated the most about Shang Noodle was the value. $18 for the beef Chow Fun and $9 for the pot stickers felt reasonable to me, considering it was on the dinner menu, the portion sizes were humongous and the restaurant was located on the Near North Side, which is usually quite pricey. I'll definitely be back, though next time I may try lunch instead, or go with friends of mine.
