Ayoooo you don't understand how bad I wanted to gate keep this place. The interior is very elegant and all of the staff we encountered were super friendly. It may have helped that the friends we were with were regulars. I doubt it though because it appears everyone was getting great service. We went during Happy Hour which is really a cheat code. All drinks and food on the menu were $10. We ordered the wing which were super crispy, flavorful and had a decent kick. 10/10 Would recommend. We also ordered fried rice with crab, calamari, and a pork noodle salad. Not a miss in the group. The cocktails were also top notch. Can't recommend this place enough. If you can't get Crying Tiger reservations, this place is on par.

Don't Tell Momma -- Gin, lychee, pineapple, and lime. Really delicious

It'd been yrs since I dined here, but with a concert to attend down the street, it seemed like an obvious choice. I'm so glad we gave them another chance. I loved my food more than the first time. Not wanting to eat 9 courses, we decided on the al a carte menu. We ordered the Wagyu beef with chili lime salt, the grilled meat platter. and the vegetable curry. I'm confident I hit my protein goal with all that meat. Lol The Wagyu beef starter was delicious. I'm not a huge red meat eater, but the beef with that chili lime salt was a great start to our meal. I'm such a sucker for all things curry, and the vegetable curry didn't disappoint. Full of large chunks of carrots and pieces of daikon, I ate more than I should have. The grilled meat platter is plentiful. Especially for 2 people. I'd been fasting all day and feeling very hungry, but I couldn't finish my share of the food. It's a very generous amount of meat. Growing up in an ultra religious household, my mom still doesn't know that I drink alcohol. It was fitting to order the "Don't Tell Momma" cocktail. Loved the gin with the lychee, pineapple, and lime. So good I drank two. So much for "Dry January". Just don't tell my momma. Service was wonderful and I really liked the overall feel of the restaurant. Parking is a beast though. It took us 20 min to find a spot. Definitely allow yourself plenty of time for that Overall I really liked my experience. If I have tickets for Thalia Hall, I'd eat here again

Did chefs tasting menu and it was the best Vietnamese I've ever had. We also ordered the chicken wings, the whole fried fluke, and the eggplant. The eggplant was epic. I would be delighted to come again. Service was impeccable and they were incredibly accommodating. I don't eat pork and they made some wonderful substitutions. The interior is beautifully done and nicely lit. I appreciated the brick interior. Awesome spot and their aged tea was lovely too.

Happened upon this restaurant while walking in the area. A couple stopped and chatted with us and shared how fabulous the meal was. Dropped in with a large party, and they accommodated us without a reservation, seating us immediately. Food was great. We ate everything family style, and didn't have a miss in any of the eight items we ordered.

Many many years and it's still one of my favorite spots! It's very hard to find a consistent restaurant and this one hits, every single time. The fluke is always so crispy but still buttery, the crab fried rice is delicious, & the eggplant is also so good! The service is always great and the space is huge.

I had high hopes going into the Chef's Grand Tasting Menu at HaiSous, and the first course delivered beautifully--especially the guava salad and grilled rice cracker, which were fresh, flavorful, and creative. Unfortunately, the main dishes didn't keep the momentum. Both the grilled dorade and the slow-braised pork belly were overly salty, and I found myself relying heavily on the rice to balance out the flavors. The dessert was a miss for me--it felt more like a bowl of whipped cream than a satisfying end to the meal. I barely made it through 10%, and I usually love dessert. If I return, I'll skip the tasting menu and go for the seafood tower instead--it looked impressive at the other tables and might be a better way to explore the menu.

When celebrating and supporting AAPI restaurants in Chicago you do it family style which means bring your friends to Haisous to have an elevated Vietnamese cuisine dinner. Probably one of my favorites for the last couple of years, tucked away in Pilsen neighborhood , they have a gorgeous decor and amazing dishes like the Fluke (fish) that is best shared with good friends. Service is awesome here and they do a great job of taking care of your group. #AAPI #asian #vietnamese

I had dinner at Haisous back in March. We wanted to try the upscale viet restaurant that all our friends talk about. So here's all 5 of our reviews about this place. To start, all the servers are lovely here. Service isn't an issue. The only issue we had was with the food. The prices are steep for whatever you're getting. The only reason we're saying this is because it doesn't taste any different from the food we can eat up north. The Wagyu beef is $70+ for the plate shown below. The meat platter was bits of the appetizers you can order from a pho restaurant. The rice that you have to pay $4 just to eat with the curry.. that's crazy. How are you suppose to eat curry if it doesn't come paired with the rice? All in all, it was a very nice experience however we don't see ourselves visiting often.

The ambience and service were wonderful, our service was very sweet! They had a unique espresso martini that I'd recommend and the food was good! My favorite was the steak and broccolini! I'd recommend checking out this place for unique flavors, reasonable prices and unique cocktails!

Came here to celebrate Valentine's Day. They had a pre fixed menu going on but we opted for items off the regular menu. This isn't going to be your go to place for authentic Vietnamese but instead amazing fusions with Vietnamese flavors. The nuoc mam wings were a classic staple and hit the spot along with the papaya salad. My favorite was the crab garlic fried rice which had such rich flavors that I think about everyday. We probably wouldn't get the grilled oysters again. The staff was so friendly and ambience was great! They gave us the valentines day dessert at the end on the house which had such delicious lightly strawberry and coconut flavors. Looking forward to coming back!

Totally understand their accolades of Bib Gourmand and the James Beard nomination. Came here with the girlfriend for a ladies weekend. Excellent food with lots of options and fantastic prices. The highs: the spicy cucumber drink. Holy cow so good with a bright clean burn on the tongue. The grilled oysters were my favorite bite and their wings were also a hit. I loved the octopus salad with the eggplant as well -- that sauce was addicting! Their desserts were also a highlight-- we couldn't decide on a favorite between the coffee cream puff, the warm sweet potato with coconut, and the pandan cookies. Service was fast and our server was so knowledgeable about the menu and so helpful. The misses: the crab pasta had overcooked noodles. They were so soft none of us enjoyed it. The vegetable curry was good but missing depth of flavor and frankly, a little heat. Paired well with my spicy cocktail though! Overall we all said we would come back, enjoyed trying some new things, and would recommend again!

Stunning interior and decor! The moment you walk in, you're in a botanical, airy, and modern vibe with intimate lighting. We were a large party of 10 and we sat in the back section which had colorful suspended lanterns, which were so pretty! The server did a great job walking through the menu with all of us. We all ordered our drinks and food quickly. We ordered the chicken wings, calamari, grilled meat platter, grilled eggplant, and baby broccoli. The food came out so quickly! It was impressive! We highly recommend the chicken wings and the grilled meat platter. The platter itself definitely served 4-5 hungry people and there was so much variety. We unfortunately had not gotten our drinks until we were halfway done eating which was confusing. We also took a look at their dessert menu and since we all were celebrating our friend's birthday, we figured she would at least have a birthday dessert or treat of some sort, but nothing special happened. The bill was not bad at all for everyone eating a good amount of shareable plates and some had a second drink. Would highly recommend visiting this spot in the Pilsen area.

    Crispy fingerling potatoes
    Clarissa C.

A perfect elevated Vietnamese place for a date night!! We got the tasting menu at $68/person, and we had a table of two. The steamed rice cakes were delicious, thin, and had a nice subtle umami to it. The tamari chili sauce was a super nice complement! The tapioca dumplings with shrimp were good, not my fav. I liked that they used dried shrimp with the whole shell still on to preserve a more smokey flavor. Not the biggest fan of the snow mushroom fig salad, which had nice bouncy textures, but tasted quite uniformly sour. The slow cooked swordfish was good and had a nice firm texture - the sauce was quite addicting. The imperial lime leaf chicken came with a super crispy skin and was marinated beautifully. Could really taste the fresh notes of lime! Crispy fingerling potatoes was one of the best dishes, though it's arguably the least Viet authentic dish here. A bit too many onions, but the smashed potatoes were delicious with the fish sauce. The fragrant lotus rice was DELISH - legit so fragrant with strong garlic flavors. The dessert was a sweet potato with vanilla custard was very creative!! A nice finish to the savory meal. I liked that they never rushed us throughout the meal, and let us take our time with each course. Our server was also super kind!!

No, they only have dine in or carry out

Does the restaurant have high chairs for kids?

Yes and booster. Leave us a note when you make the reservation and we will be all set and ready for you upon arrival. Have a great night.

    Are you guys BYOB? Thanks

Hi there! We actually have a full bar with a lovely wine list and lots of cocktails and beers. Hope to see you there!

Is HaiSous by reservation only, or are walk-ins accepted too?

Yes come on in anytime! Reservations are suggested just to ensure you have the exact time you want. However, except for Friday & Saturday, you should have no problems with walking in. Full service at the bar too! Have a good day.

The portions are very large so yes you could share easily.

Any good places to go to after dinner that's nearby?

Yes actually! The Punch House and Duseks are great options. It may be crowded there so I will also suggest Moody Tongue Brewery. The are around the corner and serve some of the most thoughtful brews and decadent chocolate cake! Cheers.

I really want to try this place. I drove around the restaurant trying to find parking, no luck. Valet parking is $12.00. ?Where is a good street that allows non-permit parking near the restaurant?

Hi Alice! Many apologies for $12 parking. It is a third party and we are trying to get them to come down a couple dollars. In the meantime, there is free street parking all along 18th St and On our cross road Carpenter St as well. Thurs-Sat can be a… Read more

Seeing as we once lived together on a Clark Street, why not dinner on this N Clark St? Following my clinical parallel park job, we entered this theatre of dreams. I'll recognize upfront my bias for sloped ceilings, but this spot ticks that interior box. Sierra Mist colored lighting to make the drinks hit harder and fake skylights that unironically went crazy. Not to mention, this Croatian meets Vietnamese love story was jamming Americana all night long. Soon enough I was white-knuckling the table to keep my cool as the medley proved to be somewhere between erotic and nostalgic. One could rescue a newborn from a burning building and it would pail in comparison to the respect our waitress lavished onto us. Reason being, this lovely lady spent the entire night responding with "yes chef" to any of our interactions. In all fairness, it's understandable to assume our party of mustached men were chefs. Heck, one of us got a diet cola, isn't that a tell too? I say all this to make known the cult status that woman will have in my heart till I breathe my last breath. As for the menu, what a divine collaboration. Sequestered into some back pages lay a section for Balkan fare that served as a platform for the married-in man to showcase his swagger. Truth be told it's this food selection that brought me in and that red pepper spread that makes me stay. This skilled in-law got even more time to shine on the beer list, with my dark Bosnian beer showing every reason why. Tasty lil thing. All things considered, this is still a Vietnamese restaurant. Pho did its thing and embraced the mega serving size stereotype it so firmly holds, but it cannot sit in the poll position here. Brian, my dear friend, voiced that his girlfriend swears by Sunset's crispy noodle. Well folks, Tessa certainly knows ball! While still respectfully conversing through our meal, Brian joined the clean plate club alarmingly fast. Based on my swapski sampling of his platter I can understand why. Clear betting favorite, certified hustler, it's what to get y'all. As we wrapped our meal my other dear friend at the table, John, accidentally stated something that must serve as the slogan for Sunset Pho Caffe. He said, "It elevates the past." By golly it does and I'll raise my glass to that!

I wasn't in the mood for pho (even though the weather was perfect for hot noodle soup) but the Hainanese chicken rice caught my eye. It was a super cute spot, small but luckily we were able to snag a table. There are only a handful of tables and they are pretty close together. It was decorated just as expected, like a Bodega of course! a trendy, hippy little shop. I think the concept is pretty cool. We were greeted by the worker at the counter and explained we can either order at the counter with her or have a seat, scan the QR code on the table and order from there. 5 stars based on Bahn mi, cha gio and iced coffee I ordered today…read more I must have been part of an early crowd. When I arrived, there was only one other table dining, which made it GREAT for me. It's a decent size hall with 10+ table arrangements, making it pretty great for a group to enjoy their lunch. It also featured a couple of kiosks for ordering, which I thought was a bit easy to miss, since it was tucked away in the left corner when you walked in. It looked like there was also a cashier available to take orders, if you miss the kiosks. I've seen places where they simply do not have anyone at the register to take orders, but that wasn't the case for Lotus. Before deciding to visit them today, I had an impression that their menu choices were very limited compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I was used to. I'm certainly not complaining, since I'm usually a huge fan of select "specialty" approach in restaurants. That's why I decided to order one of their Bahn mi, where I normally would have chosen pho for my first visit. And it didn't disappoint. First off, the size of the sandwich was good. I've had it where they charged a buck or two less, but they weren't big enough to be a full "lunch" portion. Lotus' size, I thought was decent. I had ordered one of their cha gios just in case the sandwich failed to fill me, but I think I would have been okay without it. Cha gio was super good tho! Oh, and the iced V-coffee was good, too. Typically, they'll bring out the coffee before your meal is ready, probably because they're ready-made in the morning and all you'd need to do is pour them over ice. I of course, have known legitimate mom n' pop places, where they'll actually bring out coffee as it's brewing in Phin (stainless steel coffee filter) and a glass of ice with condensed milk, so you can wait for the coffee to finish brewing and pour yourself one, which is what I *always* prefer. Not here, but no big deal. You can usually tell how good the food is going to be by trying their iced coffee. Even though V-coffee isn't known for using "incredible" beans, the balance of the strength of coffee and condensed milk *does* make a big difference in your experience. I felt this place had it correct! I'll definitely come back myself and even bring coworkers or my family to have their Bahn mi again. What I'm not sure about is whether I want to try their pho or bun. First, they don't offer too many variations, so I'm stuck choosing from just a few. (For example, I usually go for "brisket-only" or a combo of brisket and rare steak, but they didn't seem to have those options. Granted, it's possible they'll make it happen if I asked) Secondly, I think they're a couple bucks more expensive than what I would like to pay for a bowl of pho. We'll see.

An appetizer might come out last. It just whatever is ready (it appears). Also, their takeout game is strong, judging by the amount of trays ready to go and people coming in to carry-out. It's a little far for me to do takeout, but still nice to see.

As someone who moved to Chicago from the Bay Area CA, this place is by far the BEST I've had in…read moreChicago/Chicagoland yet. We arrived on a Saturday around 7:30 and they started getting packed and had a wait by 8. They are cash only but if you forget they have an atm inside as well! Prices are so shocking! Each bowl was about $14 which is the cheapest I've seen a bowl of pho in a looooong time. Food comes out pretty quickly. We order the appetizer fried shrimp Rangoon, bun Bo hue, pho dac biet, and avocado smoothie w/boba. The base of soup for both dishes was AMAZING! Good depth of flavor and not lacking anything. The bun Bo hue had a ton of meat and they even have the pork blood cubes! Pho dac biet was lacking a quantity of meat but good variety. The only complaint I have is the Avocado smoothie was very bland and didn't have much avocado taste. The boba tasted old because it didn't have its chewy texture anymore. Will DEFINITELY be coming back for the food!!!

I am from California traveling to Chicago…read more I really enjoyed the food at this restaurant. The bun bo hue was flavorful, and the rice with pork chop exceeded my expectations. Best of all, the prices are very affordable compared to other places I've tried. The goi cuon is only $5.50 for two rolls, while other restaurants charge around $7.50. I highly recommend this spot. Just keep in mind that they only accept cash, although there's an ATM inside.
