This place has everything--all you can eat sushi + all you can drink mimosas on Sundays, half of the restaurant is also hibachi style so you could opt in for that. We went not very hungry but ended up clearing everything we ordered cuz it was yummy All the sushi here were pretty yummy. I ordered the summer roll and it was a yellowtail+avocado roll topped with white tuna, jalapeno, wasabi mayo, and tobiko. As far as specialty rolls go, it was definitely on the lighter side (which is exactly what I was looking for). The fish here were generally pretty fresh. I used to really enjoy this place, but my recent experiences have been disappointing. On my last visit, we waited 20 minutes before anyone came to take our order, even though there were only five tables occupied...I'm like what is happening . The service has noticeably declined. To make matters worse, they bring us the food of the table next to us. The guy was " i think you guys got our food. " Alright , we had to apologize for the mix-up. Came here on a whim with a friend for sushi after the poke place we were going to go to was closed for the holidays. When we got there, the restaurant was completely empty. The waitress was not very friendly. She came to take our order while my friend was making a phone call and seemed frustrated when my friend asked her to come back when she was off the phone. For the food, my friend got the spicy tuna roll and the gyoza. I got a spider roll and the crazy salmon roll. Both of my rolls were just alright, neither were super flavorful and I would not order the crazy salmon roll again. I tried my friend's gyoza and it was pretty alright, but nothing that you couldn't get at any other sushi restaurant. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. Bad service and adequate (at best) food. Maybe it would be different had we had come for hibachi, but just for regular sushi, this place is worth skipping. read more

I have been frequenting Todoroki for over 6yrs now. We always order Hibachi, so I can't speak to the sushi side. I have dined in @ hibachi side as well as gotten hibachi to go. Food is consistently good and prepared well. Special requests are honored. Placed a recent to go order w/a special request. Unfortunately when I arrived home the order wasn't correct. My husband called restaurant and they were willing to remake order for us to pick up, as restaurant is about 15-20 minute ride we declined. This review is just for the hibachi grill. Great spot for a hibachi dinner! The portions are huge, and each combo comes with soup, salad, fried rice, fried noodles, shrimp appetizer, + your proteins. When it comes to all-you-can-eat sushi, Sushi Grove in Buffalo Grove sets the standard for consistency, quality, and service. Unfortunately Todoroki has failed to meet that bar over the past couple visits. The first two times I came here, everything was great and I had even wanted to give the edge to Todoroki in terms of taste, though it is a bit more expensive than Sushi Grove. However, the last two times we visited Todoroki only got progressively worse Ironically, we only made it out to Todoroki the last time because of a coupon they gave us for giving us a really sketchy bowl of miso soup. It seems they prep bowls with the miso flavoring ahead of time. Nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is when they do it so far ahead of time that the miso paste has time to solidify and refuses to melt in the soup. Bringing that up with management earned us a coupon and an open mind to try again in the future. Fast forward to last month. We order our usual AYCE sushi rolls and dig in...but quickly slow down. My wife starts joking about us getting old and not being able to eat as much as we used to, but something is bothering me... ...the rice. It's the rice. It tastes like old, refrigerated rice. The kind of rice you'd find in grocery store sushi, much less an honest-to-goodness Japanese restaurant. Okay, let's back up. To me, rice is the foundation of every meal. I'm Chinese, so that may have something to do with it. It's even in the language: chīfàn, 吃饭, literally means "eat rice," but it's used to mean eating any kind of meal. If I eat a meal and there's no rice, I will consider it a snack, contents be damned, and then proceed to the nearest rice cooker to rectify the situation. Give me your t-bone steaks, your pork, your huddled bacon yearning to be lunch, and I'll put it right on top of a bowl of rice. ...which means I've basically trained all my life to detect the differences between fresh, steaming, mirin-infused rice and refrigerator rice, which everyone knows you either use for fried rice or go through a meticulous 12-step rehabilitation process for consumption the next day. Todoroki served refrigerator rice in their sushi. There was an unpleasant chewy hardness to each grain of rice, a sensation you could feel all the way down to your stomach. Rice should part easily when masticated. This felt somewhat akin to eating little plastic pellets. So in the end, we did the unthinkable at an AYCE sushi place, which I have never in my life done before: we forfeited the cost of the sushi (they charge for leftovers) and didn't even pack it to go. The restaurant filled to about 1/3 full quickly and all diners--including a group-- seemed satisfied. The lunch special included a California roll and chef's choice of 7 nigiri. Came here for a late lunch this afternoon. At first, the server with the faded pink dyed hair and glasses that seated us was very friendly and welcoming. When she asked us what we would like, I asked if they still had an all-you-can-eat menu. She curtly corrected me in saying the "prix fixe" menu, walked away, and silently put the prix fixe menu on our table before walking away. It was a totally different behavior compared to how she started when she seated us. We thanked her each time she brought a dish and she would mumble or say something under her breath. However, when customers later came in to place an to-go orders she was very vocal and friendly-- it was very obvious that the inhospitable behavior towards us was intentional. It was a very uncomfortable atmosphere to dine in, especially as the only diners in the restaurant at that moment. Later on, a different server came in for their shift and took over serving us. The second server actually came to check in on us, asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks, and was very welcoming. We thought things had finally turned for the better. Unfortunately, we then heard our first server (the one with Kool-Aid hair) start to complain to another staff member about three different tables that came before us who also came for what she then called "all you can eat". She went on about them for a good twenty seconds until her coworker noticed me looking at them and he told her to not continue in English. They didn't realize I could still understand them. I grew up in Evanston and had been coming to Todoroki for the last ten years. I've had countless good memories with my husband here - from the time we were poor college kids to the times we would celebrate milestones together by eating here. We decided to come back after a year because 1) my husband really liked here years ago when he worked nearby, so he still had a good impression of this place, 2) we had a $10 coupon from our last visit because our miso soup bowl had dried/caked on gross stuff at bottom of our bowl (we thought they had some of the stuff sitting out for too long, just got dried and not fresh. we hoped that they made improvement during this year. We asked right when we got in if ownership or management changed, and server said no. But we are still hopeful. Anyway, read on. Miso soup and house salad-- delicious. Loved the soup, just the right flavor and presentation. No caked on stuff in my bowl. The house salad dressing is really good balance of ginger and flavor. Server came and took away my soup before I finished it. Didn't ask if I finished before taking it from me. I mean, I appreciate that they are trying to keep our table clean and all. In the process of removing my husband's bowl, a server knocked water out of our cup, didn't apologize at all and just left, but soon he came back with napkins to help clean up. I get it. Sometimes we Asians don't use words and just show with action, no big deal. Edemame-- did not sprinkle salt or add in additional flavor. Just plain boiled edemame. No complaint from me, but hubby wanted more flavor. Quantity is fewer than other places but no big deal. Karaage, shumai, and scallop-- chicken was small but fried well, sauce was a bit too bitter/salty but I liked the steak sauce flavor it has. I actually find the chicken go well with the scallop white sauce. However the scallop was not actually scallop (like last year), just mushed fish/seafood paste. Squid legs-- last time I thought it said it was octopus. But honestly this is my favorite thing here. Very tender and flavor was good without the sauce. Lunch special rolls-- I liked all four (Todoroki, dragon, volcano, hawaii sunrise). But none stands out. I can't taste the fruity/sweet flavor in hawaii, it tastes like a variation of volcano. They were pretty generous with the spicy tuna filling, but this time, all of the rice has doubled (at least more so than last year). The salmon looked really sad and dried. Very thin and not super appetizing. I didn't have a problem with the rice, but felt that it's missing the mirin flavor. After the fourth roll, my husband was having a hard time eating the rolls because he felt like the rice had been sitting out for too long, or undercooked,.. in the end, I sorta figured out what he was pointing at. The rice tasted like grocery store sushi, the type that's been sitting out for too long. It's surprising since we went around 1pm, which even if they used old rice from yesterday, it would've been used already. We made the mistake of ordering more, and ended up not eating some and got charged extra. Good thing is they honored the $10 coupon at least. My husband was so upset with the rice quality, we probably won't be coming back here anymore especially since it's kinda far for us. There are definitely better AYCE sushi places. read more

I've been here a few times, each time they amaze me. I use usually go for the AyCE sushi . This time we went 6ppl deep w/children to eat Habachi style for my sons 10yr old bday celebration. They were so child friendly, courteous, waited on us w/o attitudes and quickly handled ANYTHING we asked. We never been to the Habachi side, it's so pretty, the ambience was everything and they made my friends and family feel welcome, Not to mention- but I even bought their salad dressing TO GO cause it's just THAT DAMN GOOD!! We thought we'd pay about $400 on our dinner but it was roughly under $300 for 3 adults & 3 kids everyone was full, full portions and wasted no food at all. Great Prices!! TLDR: Be sure to check that you're getting AYCE and NOT a fixed menu. Turns out, AYCE is only offered to parties of 20+. My friend and I were not told this until after we began ordering, costing us $80 we could have spent on real AYCE. The food and ambiance were good, but the restaurant's policies are unclear. We called ahead to ask if they had AYCE and were told yes. When we showed up, they asked how big our party was, and whether we wanted sushi or hibachi. We said, "AYCE for two." As she sat us, the waitress asked if we had had AYCE before (using the words "all you can eat"). We ordered using sheets and everything went as expected. However, we were only allowed to order 6 pieces of nigiri per person at a time. It didn't really bother us because we figured we could just order more rounds (each sheet is considered a round). When we asked for a third sheet, they said we couldn't have more than 2. It turns out, they didn't have AYCE for parties of less than 20 (despite them expressly seating us for AYCE). Rather, it's a fixed menu with an order limit costing $31 per person. This limit, however, is not mentioned on the website or anywhere else. We told our waitress that we were never told this, explaining that we asked to be seated with an AYCE menu. She replied by saying the sheets have a rule at the top explaining that each party only gets to order twice. We later checked and this was not true. Although the menu did not expressly say "all you can eat," it did not mention a round limit and no one had given us any reason to believe otherwise. Our waitress was kind about the confusion, and told us that she struggles herself to keep up with it because the policy "changes all the time". We don't think we were intentionally deceived or scammed. It seemed like there was miscommunication between management and staff due to menu changes that led to miscommunication with patrons. We don't blame our waitress who was great. We mostly just felt confused and frustrated that we were told different things throughout the night. $31 per person (which comes out to just over $40 with the tax and pre-added 20% gratuity) is a completely unfair price to charge for 2 rounds of sushi, especially when we were seated after saying we were there for AYCE.
