A great midday stop after shopping till we dropped. We went in right at the start of business and a server sat us promptly. The decor was minimalist to a degree but still so elevated and nice to look at, with cranes painted on the wall for a nice touch. Lots of natural light and great music. Both the cocktails and mocktails were pretty tasty. There was a strawberry mocktail that I really enjoyed, even though the specific name escapes me! The Chicago Fire Roll was EVERYTHING, and my mom was VERY satisfied with her Salmon Teriyaki bento box. I'll definitely make my way up there the next time I'm in town. read more

Wow, I am overjoyed to have found this absolutely beautiful gem. Jimoto is the most striking Japanese restaurant in Winnetka, and I couldn't be more pleased by the whole dining experience here! The staff are all professional and welcoming. This restaurant sets itself apart on a whole new level. With its captivating LED "jimoto" sign hung boldly against lustrous black zellige wall and beautiful paper lantern lights--this room is instantly trendsetter. The special maki rolls caught my eye as many options are finished with fried garlic or potato crumbs. Definitely a good umami crunch to an otherwise soft and fresh meat--a great balanced pairing. Ordered this for delivery last night and it was delicious! I really like the Chicago fire roll with extra eel and spicy mayo sauce on the side, the seared tuna on it was perfect. The nigiri was INCREDIBLE, specifically the hamachi with the truffle on top and the otoro. The salmon was so buttery and delicious as well! Nice ambiance with huge open window on the storefront facing a Winnetka side street. Lots of locals are eating here, including families with little kids on this early Saturday evening in July. Creative flare shines on a variety of rolls, with lovely presentation. The three of us ordered three rolls plus a couple of nigiri (tuna and hamachi, 2 pieces in an order) and salmon sashimi. The fish was very fresh. The green tea was unique: the high-quality tea bag included tea leaves enhanced with aromatic herbs, and we asked for hot water refill in our teapot. We left room for apple tart for dessert. Gorgeous, tasty, not too sweet. There's a full-service bar with seating along one side of the cozy space. Sushi bar seating is along the back of the room. Jimoto was a different experience than we had thought. We stumbled upon this place in the suburbs of Winnetka and I was taken by surprise. The sushi and salad was a very tasty and filling combination. We got the salmon on the salad for some extra added protein. We requested that they grill the salmon and they did just that. We were so appreciative for them doing that because I cannot have raw salmon. So with that, we will say the service was excellent! The restaurant is a cute, vibrant, and comfortable setting in the suburbs. If you're looking for sushi or simply a fun place to go with friends in the suburbs, this is your spot. We ordered all 3 based on waitress recommendations & they ran about over $20 per roll each. Service: The manager came over to talk about sending the sushi back, well, sort of, she insisted the fish is fresh to me. Maybe if she ate a piece, she could verify it's bad....before contesting my claim. I eat a lot of sushi. I know if it's bad...they did accept the return with no fuss. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a fresh, new sushi place to dine in. I had just dined there with my girlfriend for a Valentine's Day dinner and it turned out to be a great choice. The sushi was very fresh and the interior decor was chic and modern. The food came out to our table amazingly fast once we ordered it and everything was delicious. Faster than the McDonald's drive through. Lol. We order 2 nigiri rolls (1 tuna and 1 hamachi). We also ordered the spicy tuna roll, Godzilla roll and rainbow roll. It is fairly small place, with tables a bit too close to each other, and not much of atmosphere to write about. The prices are on a higher end, and I expected high quality super fresh sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. The rainbow roll was ok at best, sashimi combo had fresh varied fish as I assumed to be, but without "wow" factor. The fish was cut very thin too. Hamachi carpaccio appetizer was probably the best selection from what we ordered. Downtown Winnetka is nice place to stroll around and get a dinner, bit I am somewhat of sushi connoisseur, and simply expected more. I'm a fan of their sister restaurant, 501 local, so when my husband and I were looking for a last min spot on a Sat night we decided to check it out. We called around 6pm and they told us they could eat as at a bar, but much to our luck had a table outside available when we got there. I had checked out their menu a few times when ordering sushi for my sushi loving family, but found their rolls to be a bit expensive for our kids. I'll stick with something more casual like AO sushi when ordering in, but think this is a great spot for sushi while dining out. We started our meals with drinks (vodka martini for me), spicy edamame (sooo spicy) and the jimoto house salad (yum). And then for our rolls: crispy rice roll (4 stars), spicy hamachi (5 stars) and tuna avocado round (3 stars). 3 rolls was perfect for my husband and I...we even had room for a Japanese cake roll (so yummy) for dessert. Their menu isn't very big, but the sushi they have is pretty good. I also love the atmosphere including the large open windows that make you feel like you're eating outside even when you're inside. And all our servers were very friendly and attentive. These sushi lovers will be back! read more

Well let's start with the good. I liked their chicken teriyaki. The not so good: The chicken teriyaki was pretty basic. Just meat, sauce, and rice. No veggies. But it was still yummy. Now the sushi- very odd combinations! An olive slice with a basic maki roll? I feel they are being too "try hard." Overall, some of the flavor combos don't work well together. Also, the last time I ordered sushi the rice was so hard (like maybe it wasn't cooked all the way or it was sitting at the bottom of the pot, so it hardened? I don't know the reason.) I had to peel it off the roll and eat the inside ingredients. The miso soup - oh my goodness was it the fishiest tasting soup I have ever tried! No thank you. The good thing though- the spicy miso was really spicy. So that was wonderful! Lastly, the prices are pretty high. I am ok with paying those prices if the quality was there, but the last time I ordered food from them, my whole family was complaining how it wasn't worth it. Bottom line: Don't judge a place on how expensive it is or how pretty the packaging is. There are other sushi spots that get it right for better value. read more

I was looking for a good sushi spot in the North Shore and a friend recommended this one. I didn't know what to expect but I noticed that they rated high on Yelp so immediately I was intrigued. I didn't make reservations in advance but probably should have since it was busy when we arrived. Luckily there was seating available at the sushi counter which would have been my preference anyway (I like watching the chefs prepare the food). I wanted something warm to sip on so they brought out their box of teas and it was such a treat going through the process of selecting the perfect one. I don't know why but when they bring out the box of teas, it immediately elevates the experience. We got the steamed dumplings and ordered a couple maki rolls, a hand roll and a few nigiris. The fish was fresh and really good quality. Next time I come back, I would probably create my own omakase and order all the nigiris to try! read more

I'm so happy jimoto has finally opened their doors! I've been anticipating the opening of this spot since I love everything their sister restaurant (501 Local) next door does! As expected, jimoto did not disappoint! Everything from the service, to cocktails , rolls, and dessert was just what we needed. I started off with sipping on a smooth shot of sake... nibbled on edamame... then onto the rolls... First, the Spicy Hamachi roll... perfect balance of flavors and the texture of the hamachi was divine... Then the Soy Paper Salmon Roll... mango. spinach. asparagus. mango sauce... I've never had spinach and asparagus in a sushi roll before and I liked this one! Last but not least, the crispy rice roll... So different and maybe my fave because of its uniqueness. The combination of crunch, and I sipped on a Lychee Martini then a "senba zuru" a thousand cranes throughout the meal For dessert, Green Tea Mochi Ice Cream & Vanilla mochi Ice Cream... I didn't ask but I'll bet the mochi was fresh and stuffed because it was soft and had the perfect flavor... The Japanese Cake Roll was delectable and had the most perfect balance of fluffiness and flavor. Not too sweet and tasted so fresh! Can't wait to come back! read more

The tables and chairs are so uncomfortable. Our table was so unsteady that any movement would send our waters to spill over, so we were constantly wiping our table. We asked to be moved but we were told someone else was waiting for the other table. Service was not any better, had to ask for items 3-4 times before we would receive them. We brought a bottle for corkage, we were never provided with an ice bucket and had to uncork your own bottle! The worst part we had to keep our bottle under our chair because a table was so wobbly we could not even put the bottle on the table. I would recommend management to be more present during the dinner weekend rush and ask their guests how things are going. Such a disappointment. read more

The atmosphere is romantic and sophisticated especially compared to any other sushi spot in the area. Honestly the fish quality is great. A lot of places around here it is next to impossible to get nigiri or sashimi that's not only good, worth the price, but it is better than. I cannot stress this enough. The fish tastes fresher than any other in recent memory... but after the hamachi and suzuki make sure you try the wagu nigiri, it does not disappoint! seriously worth it. Came here for a date night with a friend of mine, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't too overpriced, like so many restaurants on the North Shore, especially for Japanese food. The quality of food is certainly up there, to match their service and decor. - Otoro nigiri: Great quality, rich without being too fatty, perfectly sliced, melted in your mouth, with all the fatty deliciousness of otoro - Wagyu beef nigiri: Amazing flavor, you get all the wonderful red meat juices and flavor, with the tenderness that only thin slices and wagyu can you give you - Tako nigiri: If you like octopus this one is a good choice, it was tender, but not that flavorful, to be expected - Salmon & Hamachi sashimi: Just the right amount of marbling, tender, melts in your mouth, good thickness - Curry w/ rice (special): This was smaller than expected, but it was a good shared appetizer or shared entree (tapas style). The flavor was solid, a little sweeter than I would've thought, but that likely meant that it was probably made from scratch, which is expected for a restaurant of this caliber. This place is very mediocre. The best thing I ate was the wagyu maki roll. It was excellent. Everything else was nothing special and the steamed shrimp dumplings were downright bad. The restaurant was fairly uncomfortable in the winter. They first seated us at a table that was directly in the line of freezing air coming in every time the door opened. How they sliced their fish to appear as more on the platter we felt, was conniving. How can you slice one (1 shrimp 5-6 times?); a sliver of a bite. We ordered delivery. Awesome. Delicious and Jimoto managed to make the delivered food visually appealing. The problem with delivered food is that it often tastes and looks like leftovers.
