I appreciate their lunch menu, but for being a large sit down restaurant, I would prefer most take-out spots. The flavoring tastes packaged and lackluster. My husband and I have been trying to find a go-to Chinese restaurant in our neighborhood for a while and we finally found it in Shanghai Inn!! The Crab Rangoon, Potsticker/Dumpling, Orange Chicken, and Chow Mein were excellent. Loved that dumpling were the thicker kind and came with a great sauce. We orders online and went to pick up. I ordered from here this Christmas eve and last, since Chinese food is my traditional meal! Overall, the food is pretty good. They win over some other places because I love egg fu young. Everything was ready and waiting, and piping hot, at the appointed pick up time. They were busy fielding calls, pickups, and dine-in, but got to me very quickly. The veg egg foo young is exactly what you expect and very tasty. The small is 2 patties. The yu shin vegetable was new to me this year, and will be added to the order going forward. It was medium spicy and flavorful, with all the veggies I'd hoped for (broccoli, peapods, baby corn, mushrooms, red and green pepper, and water chestnuts). The tofu curry was a little underwhelming. It could have used a little oomph. The only disappointment was the vegetable fried rice, which had a ton of broccoli and a couple bits of green pepper and... that was it. Not a morsel of onion or a bit of baby corn, and no egg! I threw it in a pan and cooked in an egg, but it was not as good as what I'd had before. Dined at Shanghai inn for the first time last night! The dinner portions are SO big and delicious! Shared crab rangoons, egg rolls, Cantonese chow mein, and garlic chicken with my friend. About $40 for all 4 items which is a steal! It was so tasty and we both had lots to take home. Would highly recommend everything I ordered, but could pass on the egg rolls next time. Was too busy eating didn't take pics of everything. Service was friendly and quick. Ambiance is old school booth seating and cozy. Also want to mention the hot tea was so good and didn't just taste like hot water. Food came out quickly! Will definitely be back! read more

I have walked past Shanghai Inn quite a few times and my friend and I decided to give it a try. We ordered takeout online and were impressed by the fair prices and variety on the menu. We decided to pick up our order since the restaurant is close. We also noticed there was plenty of paid street parking available if you are driving. There was not a long wait time between placing our order and picking it up. The staff were also very friendly when we got our food. It was ready when promised! The restaurant seemed clean and welcoming if you were dining in. One impressive thing about this food is that it stayed HOT (temperature, not spice!) in these takeout boxes. Almost 45 minutes later the food in the middle of the containers was still very warm. As for the taste, it was pretty good except for the vegetable egg rolls. The egg rolls were lackluster and the slaw looked like it had seen better days. Overall, we thought the food could have had more flavor. I will definitely keep Shanghai Inn in my rotation of local Chinese food! read more

Cozy gem from yester-years of eat-in Chinese dining! Portions are huge, flavors are delish, it's so affordable and the service is always so kind and cheerful. We stumbled in here on a cold winter's night thinking we would order takeout to-go, but the red leather booths beckoned and we quickly learned our lesson! Apparently it's been around since the '60s, and for good reason. If you want a low-key date night and mouth-watering Chinese, highly recommend. read more

Can you experience nostalgia in a place you've never been to before? Shanghai Inn definitely hit me hard with that. Google says it opened in 1960, and while I can't find any other evidence of that, I can believe it. I absolutely love authentic Chinese food, from hot pot to dim sum to mouth numbing Szechuan. But we didn't have that out in the burbs where I grew up - we had paper placemats with the Chinese Zodiac, almond cookies and cheap Chinese buffets (which was definitely a great place for teenage me to get my money's worth). Shanghai Inn isn't a buffet, but it hits so many notes of a classic Chinese American restaurant. Leather booths, hot mustard and sweet and sour sauce in squeeze bottles, a slight yellow tint in the lighting, an amazingly friendly staff. And of course, the paper Zodiac placemats. My wife and I decided to go for all the greatest hits - first the egg rolls, which were super deep fried, just greasy enough and filled with shrimp and veggies. Shrimp fried rice - I swear this was a dish that spat in inflation's face. Almost every spoonful had some shrimp in it, and it was a giant bowl General Tso's chicken - crispy, sweet, and a hint of heat. It wasn't too much that my baby boy couldn't handle it, and it was just perfectly done in the way I can't get at the authentic Chinese places (which is on me for ordering that instead of mapo tofu) Shrimp in lobster sauce - again, a generous amount of shrimp and the sauce was much darker and richer than your usual lobster sauce (which ironically has no lobster in it) Our family was full, happy, and I hit the Peloton hard the next morning. This is the classic Chinese American restaurant experience that I've never had in the city after living in it proper for over ten years. I'll definitely be back, just need to finish all these leftovers first. read more

I gave the Shanghai Inn four stars because of the friendly staff and the good sized portions. My neighbor liked the Shanghai Inn recently, so I thought I'd check it out for myself. It was mostly good, but a few so-so ones too. I chose Chicken Schezwan and it was the star of the show. I didn't care for the fried rice at all, the egg roll was good, but I will go with Crab Rangoon on my next visit, also I'll go with the chicken noodle soup next time instead of the egg drop soup. They give you a good portion, definitely enough to take home. The lunch specials are the way to go, your entree comes with fried rice, chicken noodle soup or egg drop soup, egg roll or one Crab Rangoon what a great deal at $10,50 as of this writing. The waitstaff is very friendly and helpful, always ready to please. Another thing is it's very close to the Brown Line Damen "L" stop or if you're driving there are spaces down the side streets, no need to feed the meter. read more

My friend ordered from here, picked it up, took a bite of the chicken and immediately didn't like it. She called and asked if she could exchange the food for something else and she'll just pay the difference. They told her no and explained that if she dined in, they would've did it. What's the difference? You're going to throw the food away anyways. She touched a piece of chicken and that was it. We've never been to a restaurant where we couldn't exchange it for something else, especially if we're willing to come back. Shanghai Inn is by far our favorite Chinese spot in the city. The food and service never disappoint. We got the Pineapple Chicken(our new favorite), the Mongolian Trio, Veggie Lo Mein and Crab Rangoon's with hot tea for under $60. Since it was just 2 of us, we had plenty of leftovers for the next day given how big of portions these are! If you want really good Chinese for a great value, this is the spot to go. read more

We ordered delivery: crab Rangoon, pot stickers, garlic shrimp and mu shu pork. Delivery was excellent and quantity was large. Appetizers were very good. Mu shu did not have wood ear mushrooms and was made with the same bland brown sauce as the shrimp. The shrimp did not have any garlic flavor, just brown sauce. I know we were ordering American Chinese food, but even by those standards, this was subpar. Wish I could recommend because it's hard to find good Chinese on the northside. read more

Delicious! No-frills Chinese restaurant. Never dined in but experience take out and they never disappoint. One time they messed up the order and were extremely apologetic and delivered the correct dish at no cost. Highly recommend the subgum lo fon! It's bursting with flavor and if you like thick, chewy noodles then this is your dish. Sesame chicken is also exceptional but of course because of the breading you want to eat it fresh. This is one of those treasures. Old school American Chinese food, from my non-Chinese childhood. I got my standard order, Pork Chop Suey, extra fine and Hot n' Sour soup. It's pretty much what I order any time I go to a new Chinese place, because I LOVE Hot n' Sour soup, and am always looking for a replacement for my former favorite that closed. The food was good. Ordered the sweet and sour chicken for takeout online and was super pleased! First of all I love that you can order online and pay with cash when you pick it up. Second, let's just say the large is definitely large. Can definitely get two full meals out of one order. Now for the food, also great.
