Stopped here after dropping off a friend. I was immediately greeted by a nice lady who took my order of beef fried rice and beef egg foo young. It was still warm by the time I got home. Also, when I try new place I put them on some cute plates. Next time, paper plates. I loved beef fried rice. I had scallions and bean sprouts. Next time I will order extra. You can tell that the food has been kissed by the wok fire adding more flavor. The rice was good, add a splash of soy sauce and the flavor is amplified. It tasted almost buttery. The beef egg foo young was a little lighter in color than I'm use to, but the flavor and texture was fluffy and moist not dense and dry. Sooooo happy I came back here for a welcome punch of food nostalgia. The lunch special is a DEAL for how much food you get. Ordered the Mongolian beef lunch special, upgraded to beef fried rice, came with an egg roll. Frick man, so much food for $13. And the Mongolian beef? Bro. Come try it. Tender. Good sauce ratio. Good meat to veggie ratio. Nice beefy umami taste. This Mongolian beef is literally what I measure other Mongolian beefs by unconsciously. Nice to know I came back and it kept the standard. Ordering food from this establishment is like tossing a coin, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's very bad, My most recent order was absolutely horrible, the food seemed to be reprocessed from the day before and the gravy was watery and tasteless. I did call to complain a few days later and the manager indicated that I should have called the same day and there was nothing that she could do. I ordered their Beef with Garlic Sauce and it was good and a nice portion to boot but I wasn't too crazy about their fried rice that comes with the order. The rice was brown not white like you would expect to be and I really didn't like the consistency it was sticky like oatmeal not separated as it should be it also had a strange taste too. This review is only for their beef chow fun with Chinese broccoli - on the special menu board forever. Been coming here and the now-shuttered sister restaurant Lo's China Chef across the street since I was a kid with my father, brother, and uncle. That dish was our favorite. It's still as good as ever and whenever I'm in Chicago we pick up some to take home. Just a walk-in place with some neat old photos on the wall of foodie celebrities and some very hardworking cooks in the kitchen. Get the beef chow fun with Chinese broccoli. I use to come to this place as I grew up in the neighborhood, but I will not be going back, not even for the sentimental value. The food is mediocre at best. I bought two entrees for over $29 which is pricey for this type of place but the kick of it all is that when I requested hot sauce, she asked how many I wanted. I said "3" and she proceeded to say "$1.30 please". REALLY?!? Charging me for hot sauce? At least give me two "free", one for each entree. Their attitude was also rude when I asked if I could at least get one. In addition, the rice was mushy and it appeared to be broken up rice (see pic) the texture was hard too. This place used to be my favorite place to eat at as a child. Today I've had the worst experience ever out of any restaurant. I ordered mongolian beef and the order was full of hair. I typically let one hair go, but there was multiple strands of hair in the beef and the rice. I also got sick from it as I am writing this. I will no longer be a longtime customer. The best hole in the wall Chinese in Chicago. My family has ordered with lo's for the past 25 years. I always get the beef and broccoli. I have ordered this for the past 25 years consistently. Each time it is the same great flavor and recipe. Each time. Now that's amazing! Lunch specials for under $8 before 3pm on certain days. Egg foo young and the shrimp fried rice is to die for. I had passed by this small local Chinese place many times without even a second thought before my fiancée and I tried it. Man were we missing out. I called and ordered orange chicken at 9' o clock at night. First thing I noticed about this whole experience was the guy never told me how long it would take. I showed up aprox 10 min later and it still wasn't done, no big deal. It ended up taking about 5 more min and I had my 2yr old with me so that kind of sucked. My impressions of the restaurant itself were good. Very clean and orderly. Kitchen is open so that you can see everything that is going on. Onto the food. As I said earlier I ordered the orange chicken. I posted a picture. I wasn't happy with it overall. It cost 10.25 after taxes and the portion wasn't that big. I'm kind of picky about that though. When I order Chinese I like to be able to get a couple meals out if it. You probaly could with this meal but they would be pretty small portions. The food itself? The sauce was great the chicken was horrible. Ya, I know. It's kind of odd to have that big of difference. The chicken was completely scorched. So badly that it was stringy. I ended up taking it all out and mixing the rice in the sauce and eating that. The sauce as I said was good. However, not a traditional orange sauce. Nothing orange about it except the orange they put on top. Sounds strange but I did like it. I'm probably going to back and try the Singapore noodles. Everybody seems to agree they are pretty good. I can't point out one specific flaw about the place but in the same hand I can't think of one thing that really separates it from the pack. Their Tso's chicken is, predictably, predictable. The broccoli it's served on is a bit undercooked, the sauce coating the bawk-bawk a bit overpowering but as a dish it exudes a certain je ne sais -meh- and can't seem to decide if it wants to be outstanding or sucky. And I can't decide either. There ain't nothing in the area that's better or worse. Orange Garden is just out of reach over near Damen so if you find yourself catsitting for your friend and you have to eat Chinese, I guess Lo's can love you long time but don't expect it to remember you the next morning, I guarantee you won't remember it either. read more

Here is an example of our usual order: ORANGE CHICKEN (major YUMM), Singapore style noodles, Mongolian Beef, Pork Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Beef, Pot Stickers, Crab Rangoon, Lemon Chicken, Beef Lo Mein....egg rolls are okay...we only order them from time to time. Food cooked fast to order. We usually hit the "take out" one on California, but I have been to the sit down version on Irving Park not more than a block away from the take out location. Only problem is that they DON'T DELIVER!!! UGh, but it is close and a quick call usually means food is ready in 15 minutes for easy pick up.
