Veggie delight and sauteed pork ribs chili pepper
Melanie T.

I've walked past this spot so many times on my neighborhood strolls and mistakenly assumed it was just an upscale vibey Chinese restaurant, emphasis on upscale. I didn't consider that its food would be good. HOWEVER. I was wrong! It is true it is a beautiful restaurant with a gorgeous patio and indoor/outdoor setup. What surprised me was how delicious the food was AND reasonably priced given the high quality and portion sizes! It brings both vibes and tasty food. We ordered the sauteed pork rib chili pepper and wow these ribs are unique and very yummy! The portion size was good too. I just wish it was a bit more tender. My favorite dish was surprisingly the veggie delight. Honestly so delightful with the flavor bomb of a sauce, the variety of vegetables, and the juicy texture of the fried tofu which soaked up all the sauce. I also really enjoyed the hot and sour soup! Everything was served in a beautiful dish and the service was excellent. It was a nice touch for them to pack up our leftovers for us and even gave us fresh white rice to take home. Even their takeout bag was high quality. Such a great spot especially on a summer day to grab a delicious and comforting Chinese meal. I love their open garage door/window set up which they open up completely during the summer and transitions nicely into their outdoor patio on Damen. What a lovely spot!

Sushi lunch special

We can early for lunch and it had a nice upscale feel, they had large garage doors that could be opened up on a nice day to include the outside dining . They had some good lunch specials deals with generous portions., which included an eggrolll or miso soup. All the food was good, the orange chicken was nice and crispy but not spicy at all. Ramen had a yummy broth with good noodles. The kimchi fried rice had a good crisp and spice to it . The waitress was helpful and quick.

It was bound to happen. We found a restaurant in Chicago that we didn't like much. We started with potstickers. They were not good- I've never had a doughy potsticker. Flavor was ok, but just too much dough! Donna got salt and pepper tofu. It was breaded cubes of tofu with no sauce and some rice. She ate about a third of it. I got a raw scallop wrapped around some rice with wasabi and pickled ginger (I got a raw thing to shock the wife). By itself it had little flavor, but the wasabi was fierce. So strong, cleared my sinuses right out. My main was chicken tonkatsu ramen, a big bowl of average. Chicken was ok, a bit chewy. The broth just didn't have any depth of flavor. Overall, a fail.

Based on the mixed reviews, I was a little hesitant but I have to say we were pleasantly surprised!! We ordered on door dash from a huge menu. We went with the: - Scheuzan chicken 8/10 - Pad see ew 9.5/10 - steamed gyoza 8/10 This is the best pad see ew I have found in wicker park. I've struggled to find good Thai here! Delivery or within walking. All the normal recs have been disappointing for this dish. Little wok nailed this! Good flavor, good portion. My only wish was a little more spice but overall will def get again. My husband liked his too but it didn't come with white rice like those dishes normally do which we thought was strange... def should. We also both enjoyed the gyoza. Haven't tried the sushi or "Chinese" side of the menu but liked the Thai!

My sister and I ordered one of everything on the pre fixed menu. California Roll here

While our service can be hot or miss our food is always great... and drinks fantastic!! Add in a gorgeous setting and you've got one of my favorite restaurants.

I'm in town for a couple days and decided to join my friends for dinner at Little Wok. This place does take reservations, but we did not need one. It was 5 PM on a Thursday and the place was pretty empty. There are a lot of seating and it is nicely decorated. Julian (the busboy) came as soon as I sat down to fill our cups with water and was very attentive whenever we needed refills. Our waiter, Sam, was so nice and checked in on us periodically to make sure we were doing alright. The food came out in a timely manner, which I really appreciated. I had the avocado roll as my appetizer, which came with 10 rolls. It was fresh and they provided soy sauce. As my main portion, I had the walnut shrimp. It came with a side of rice as well. The walnut shrimp was creamy and also came with broccoli. It was a good portion size, so I even had some leftovers.

I'm conflicted about this place after eating here several times. I like the variety of different Asian dishes on their menu - Chinese, Thai, Korean, etc. The beef cubes over rice is one of their best dishes, although the Korean beef over rice was fatty and thin. Sushi rolls are on the thinner side compared to other places. Drinks are good though. Service is typically good , although I've sometimes had dishes come out late while others receive theirs. Sitting on their dog friendly outside patio is nice vibes.

I was pleasantly surprised with Little Wok! I came with my partner and we really enjoyed our meal here. We initially wanted to grab sushi at an AYCE spot nearby, but the wait time was too long for our rumbling stomachs. We had always wanted to try Little Wok (and had seen their thriving outdoor patio in the summertime), so off to Little Wok we went. There was no wait on a cold weeknight. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated immediately at a spacious curved booth on the first floor. I jokingly called it a couples booth because our table could have seated 3-4 but we'll never say no to a roomy booth. The space was really modern and chic. They had a full bar AND a sushi bar, and some TVs on the side wall by the stairs to the second floor. I appreciated Little Wok because it's a spot that serves solid pan-Asian fare with a lovely interior without with marked up prices that normally come with such a well-designed interior space. The price VERY reasonable without sacrificing on quality. For me, Little Wok filled a missing hole in the asian category: being able to order a beer on tap or a nice cocktail with my meal while still having items like Szechuan eggplant, mapo tofu, nigiri, sushi rolls, and sashimi sets. Here is what we ordered for dinner. **Appetizers** Sushi Starter White Tuna and Avocado Roll Hot & Sour Soup **Mains** Mapo Tofu with Ground Pork Shoyu Ramen There were two designated men behind the sushi counter, a bartender making drinks, and runners carrying trays of the pretty lychee martinis and baskets of fresh-from-the-fryer crab rangoons. I have not ordered take-out here before, but there constant orders being processed through the night. Little Wok, you got yourself a BIG fan here. I loved dining in here with all the comforts of my favorite dishes. We will be back!

Dai Yee's Asian Kitchen - Shrimp Broccoli, Beef Tofu (hot), Egg Fried Rice

Dai Yee's Asian Kitchen

Dai Yee's Asian Kitchen is the underground emperor of late-night Chinese food in Chicago, the spot…read moreyour Uber driver, your bartender, and every chef in the city whispers about when they're truly hungry. Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The black pepper beef tenderloin is velvet-soft, glossy, and aggressively peppery in a way that makes you order extra rice just to survive the happiness. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive. Portions are straight out of the 90s--massive trays that could feed a family of four for under $15. Cash-only, BYOB, and everything comes out blazing hot in under ten minutes even when the place is slammed. The ladies running the show are legends: fast, funny, and they'll roast you (lovingly) if you can't handle the spice level you asked for. If you leave Chicago without hitting Dai Yee's at least once (preferably at 1 a.m. with a six-pack), you didn't really experience the city. This is real-deal, no-filter, soul-satisfying Chinese food that reminds you why we fall in love with restaurants in the first place. Dai Yee's isn't just a restaurant; it's a Chicago institution in the making. I'd wait in line in a blizzard for those smelts. See you at midnight.

Before that, I…read morechecked out a few eateries on the 4th floor of the Nordstrom building, but nothing really stood out, and honestly, none of them seemed very busy and the one restaurant Lao Sze Chuan was way too expensive, $30+ entrees were average and the place wasn't busy at all. So I decided to try Shang Noodle, which was tucked away on a side street off Grand Ave., just steps from Michigan Ave. It's across from the Nordstrom building, past Labriola's, down some steps and about a block away located on the south side of the street. As soon as I walked in, and I wasn't expecting this but the restaurant was extremely loud and nearly every seat was taken and everybody seemed to be enjoying themself, families, couples and groups. I figured that was a good sign and it signaled to me that the food was probably good! At first, the host wanted me to sit at the bar, which I politely declined because I don't usually sit at bars, also, I was there to eat, not pick up somebody! I noticed a small table open, pointed it out, and he kindly let me take it. No 'tude either! As far as my server goes, she was efficient, friendly, and very helpful with recommendations since it was my first visit and probably because I didn't look like the other customers who were more familiar with the cuisine. She suggested the pot stickers over the hot and sour soup, and the beef Chow Fun instead of chicken Chow Fun. The pot stickers were a little small, but crispy and very tasty. I also asked for some sweet and sour sauce on the side which I'm glad I did because it paired nicely with the pot stickers instead of that plain vinegar sauce they usually serve you. For my main dish, I ordered the char-grilled beef Chow Fun. The portion size was more than generous, and the char-grilled beef had a great umami flavor. A few of the rice noodles were a bit firm, likely undercooked, but overall though it was quite enjoyable. What I appreciated the most about Shang Noodle was the value. $18 for the beef Chow Fun and $9 for the pot stickers felt reasonable to me, considering it was on the dinner menu, the portion sizes were humongous and the restaurant was located on the Near North Side, which is usually quite pricey. I'll definitely be back, though next time I may try lunch instead, or go with friends of mine.
