Silver Seafood was a Zagat rated restaurant in the 2010's. They haven't been Zagat for a while. I don't know what's going on over at Zagat, But Silver Seafood tastes pretty damm good to me. Silver Seafood and Tryzub were the two clear Gourmet superstars of the restaurants I reviewed on this Chicago trip. Zagat can go take a walk. * * * There was a large Chinese birthday party at Silver Seafood when we were there. Those lucky individuals were sharing about fifteen or twenty different dishes on large tables with Lazy Susans. I was there with just my wife. No fifteen or twenty dishes for us. We each got one pot of soup ... And we had to ask for the small size serving. (The small size serving was still the size of a major sports trophy.) * * * My Grand Slam Home Run Soup was called Special Seafood Combo. Yes - soup names don't get much vaguer than that. The only thing I knew in advance was that there would be seafood and probably more than one kind. What I got was egg drop soup with fish stock and about a dozen kinds of fish and shellfish. The stock was the best Chinese stock I have ever had that was not the stock in a Singapore Chinese pig organ soup. (This writer kills for Singapore Chinese pig organ soup.) But my shellfish soup stock was rich, suave, full of flavor and massively comforting. Pig organ soup has nine hundred thousand parts of the pig. Seafood combo soup has nine hundred thousands flavors from the fisherman's net. Nine hundred thousand is a wonderful number. This soup was a bowl of endless delights. And just for the record - egg drop soup concepts are usually not all that interesting. When was the last time you were ever thrilled by a wonton soup? I thought so. Which are you more likely to order, an egg drop soup or a hot and sour soup? I thought so too. So to have this Soup From Heaven come out of the extremely unpromising Egg Drop Soup category Tells you just how good the cooks are at Silver Seafood. * * * Other Yelpers don't like this place as much as I do. Silver Seafood cooks for Chinese palates - not for American palates. They use MSG by the fistful. Great Chinese cooks use MSG in industrial quantities and have zero guilt about it. MSG makes things taste good - so I am totally with them on this one. Yeah, MSG gives some people headaches. I get headaches from reading the newspaper. Compared to that, MSG is a relief. There are people complain that there is too much taro in taro dishes. Americans like rice and potatoes better than taro. Some of the fish by intention is strong tasting. Americans insist on mild fish. East Asians eat fish that is older and stronger than fish that we would prefer. The Koreans are the kings of "well aged fish". But the Chinese can play this game too. In a non-Chinese place, I would complain about old not-fresh food. But for non-Japanese East Asian seafood cooks - the decision to "go strong" is a deliberate artistic decision. My soup had both suave and stand-up-and-grab-your-attention fish fillets. They both tasted great - and having both of them in there gave interest to the dish. * * * So I am not on board with the Chicago Yelp complainers. Nor am I on board with Zagat taking a walk. Silver seafood is a traditional Chinese restaurant with a wide variety of dishes to accommodate anyone's taste buds. It's not a fancy restaurant, but a wholesome traditional Chinese restaurant with solid food. The service was good, the wait staff was attentive. The atmosphere is typical Chinese restaurant with fish tanks for fresh seafood, lobsters, crabs. We enjoyed crab Rangoon, salt and pepper tofu, salt and pepper pork chops, roasted pigeon, vegetable chow fun, sautéed chow mein with soy sauce, orange chicken, shrimp with walnuts. We came in for the first time. Four of us went family style. The service was pretty prompt. The wine list is awful. So we stuck to the sodas. We ordered the Oysters, the shrimp in lobster sauce, salt pepper short shell crab, shrimp fried rice, and the Chinese broccoli. They didn't repeat the order and as a result they missed the fried rice order and we had to ask for it when it didn't come. THe oysters were huge and cooked with greens and black bean sauce. They were just okay. The shrimp in lobster sauce was also just okay. small shrimp and the sauce wasn't think like other places and really lacked flavor. The S&P soft shell crab was amazing. Definitely worth another err visit. OMG the flavors were great. The Chinese broccoli was the next best thing. Nice and tender and flavored nicely with oyster sauce. Huge menu, prompt and efficient service, and really delicious food! My brother and his Vietnamese-American wife love this place, and my first visit made me a believer too. We celebrated a birthday here by getting a whole crab ($45 market price), and a whole bunch more food for nine people. It was delightful to sit around the big table with a Lazy Susan and share the feast. The atmosphere could have benefited from some music or a fountain or something, but it looks nice, and there is plenty of easy parking just north of the building. read more

Everyone who came in and out of the restaurant the night we were here were Asian so we both assumed the food must be at least somewhat good! Our server, "Eason" according to the receipt was actually super friendly accommodating for us during our dining experience here so a big thanks to him! We were served tea at the beginning as usually expected and given menus. The food: we ordered 4 different dishes, as shown in the photos. The Salt & Pepper Shrimp w/ Shell on, The Salted fish & chicken rice, & Eggplant w/ Garlic Sauce were all a solid 8/10 although we'd rate the Crab Meat Fish Maw Soup about a 7.5 because we felt for the $19 price point, they could've given us a bit more crab in the order. Lastly, the server was kind enough to ask if we wanted fortune cookies or red bean dessert. We chose the red bean dessert and it was delicious! Everything tasted loaded with MSG. I ordered twice cooked pork and we were given this abomination of a dish with pork pieces, cabbage, zucchini, mushrooms.. THIS was definitely NOT twice cooked pork. I just didn't complain at the time because I started eating it. Lol. We were here several times before and it's been a while but at the time of our visit- there was plenty of fruit flies. We had to shoo them away or cover our food with table napkins because they're notorious on really getting to you food. Upon seating at the table we already noticed 2 insect zapper machines... A close Chinese restaurant. Didn't expect too much but they have some really interesting dishes. Taro crispy duck: you will like it if you're crazy about Taro. Just waaaaaaaay too much taro for me. The taro: duck meat ratio is like 5:1. Way too dry with this much taro. Would give 5 star if it's 1:1 cause the top and bottom are really crispy and good flavor. Combination fried rice: big portion and has lot of stuff in it. Worth it. Twice cooked pork: this is not real twice cooked pork. It's cabbage with stewed pork. Not even close to the original recipe. I was disappointed with Silver Seafood, even thought it came highly recommended. The food is very salty, even though we told them "No MSG." We ordered pot stickers, egg rolls, fried sticky rice, chicken moo shoo and beef moo shoo, and shredded duck with vegetables. I think the pot stickers were the best dish. The egg rolls arrived cut in half. They had some slices of unidentifiable meat in them, plus a few shrimp, bean sprouts, cabbage, etc. (I wouldn't order these again.) The moo shoo arrived already made with side plates of extra filling and no extra pancakes. Again, these dishes were very salty. (I'd prefer to assemble my own moo shoo.) The fried sticky rice was interesting, with Chinese sausage, peanuts, bits of broccoli and other vegetables, but heavily salted. The pieces of duck were well fried with lots of vegetables like celery and bell peppers, but salty too. We never got refills on water or tea and I had to ask for fortune cookies. The waiter finally brought them and almond cookies too. The service was slow. All the doors were open, including the bathroom doors. Maybe there was an air conditioning problem. What's cool about Silver Seafood is they have a ton of seafood dishes, plus more interesting items Chicken Feet with Hot Sauce, Fried Intestine, Hot & Sour Cucumbers, Shark Fin done a bunch of different ways, Bird's Nest Soup, Fish Bladder, Duck Tongue, Quail done 8 different ways, Frog done 4 ways - just to name a few! Their Crab Rangoon? Meh, I'd pass on getting that here in the future. Way too much breading compared to the stuffings. And the crab & cream cheese mix just seemed a bit dry. I just wasn't impressed with their crab rangoons and I feel like you usually can't go wrong with the deep fried goodness. I found the Lime Chicken to be just alright, as well. Decent flavor but I wasn't in love with it though the chicken itself was done perfectly for the deep fried dish. They have an interest dish they call Double Flavors Chicken. It's a normal sized large dish but half the container is orange chicken and half the container is lemon chicken. The lemon chicken is not breaded and much lighter in flavor, dare I say even a tad bit healthy. Whereas the orange chicken is deep fried with bigger pieces of chicken. Again, both dishes were okay but nothing overly delicious I would come back for. They have a bunch of lunch specials if you can get there at the right time! I was craving dim sum today and found this place on yelp. The dim sum places I am used to in LA cart around all of the dim sum dishes around the restaurant. Here you order each item from the menu. I thought the selection here was very small. Though there is a whole menu of options, I guess they just didn't have my favorites. I ordered the shumai and pork buns from the dim sum menu and then also ordered chicken fried rice. And my husband ordered the orange chicken lunch special. The food was ok tasting. I thought the fried rice could have used a bit more flavor, it was a bit bland. Everything else was standard. I will say what bothered me was that each of the dishes came out at such different times. The rice came out first and then every 5-10 minutes something else came out. I get that food has Different cook times but at a restaurant they usually plan it out a bit better, I thought. Walnut pieces are small so you can get some with every bite. Shrimp and taste was perfect. - Hong sue fish filet: this is the only place where I have had this dish. I didn't think that the fish has the strongest taste, so I found it better to have alone, rather than with rice to get the full flavor which was good. The bokchoy is fantastic. - Beef chow fun: I found this dish to be good, but a bit more gravy-like. - Mapo tofu: good! - Combination fried rice: very, very good with pieces of shrimp and pork. - Singapore noodle: really delicious. This restaurant rules. There's a ton of stuff on the menu -- arguably too much -- but if you order actual Cantonese dishes, they'll serve you some excellent food. Chicago does have good Chinese food, but not much of it is on the Northside. Down in Chinatown or Bridgeport or even downtown is another story, but Silver Seafood is some of the most interesting Chinese food north of the Loop. Most of the other half-dozen *good* Chinese places on the Northside are either Sichuanese -- like Chengdu Impression or Lao Sze Chuan -- or barbecue-oriented -- like Sun Wah -- so Silver Seafood fills an important niche: good Chinese food that is neither crazy spicy, super meat heavy, nor reminiscent of a mall food court steam table. (Don't get me wrong--I love love love Sichuanese food and even have a soft spot for objectively mediocre American Chinese food.) A few hints to get you started, because the menu is long and not especially approachable: try a salt-and-pepper seafood dish, something with black bean sauce, or the chow mein or chow fun noodle dishes. The various vegetable dishes seasoned with dried scallops are excellent, as are all the clam dishes I've tried (which they don't always seem to have in stock). Homestyle tofu is a comfort food classic that is just so satisfying on a cold Chicago night. My fave, though, is the preserved sausage with yellow chives. It's a stir fry, where the delicious fermented rendered fat of the air-dried sausages is used to sautée the mild yellow chives. It's a top five dish I've eaten in Chicago, and I've lived here for almost a decade. read more

The pricing is very fair for the great quality that you get. They have parking space for you and you will need to get a quick parking slip from the restaurant since the local towing truck company drop by and hails your car away. I would really suggest for you give it shot where you come to this area since a great place for food. It's a few block out of the main corners of this Asian market and food area and so you may have to walk about 10 minutes if you are not driving to the Argyle street area. Some of the best Cantonese food on the north side of Chicago in Uptown. We ordered their honey walnut shrimp, crispy seafood noodles, and salt and pepper fried calamari. Everything reminded me of the Cantonese restaurants I would go to in California, even the homey decor. Customer service was nice, and the food came out within 30 minutes. The food was fresh, well-seasoned, and exactly what we needed. I will definitely be back, and happy to bring friends and family. Very very good food. Shrimp with walnuts is amazing and remarkable. You could serve it fir a fancy dinner party. The shrimp are huge and taste more like lobster. The walnuts are just wonderful with a sauce we love. Everything we have had we liked. The whole crab made with ginger and scallions is really a special treat-just to die for. The old standbys are well done here. The quality of the meat is good. It's tender and no gristle. I have lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and felt so sorry I just found this place. New tables/chairs to go now with the new floor. Dim sum menu is limited and is definitely not their strength, but it does give you some more variety to add to their lunch special menu and full menu. From our most recent visit on a Friday night, their two front of the house staff were able to keep up with dine-in and take out customers. It seemed the kitchen was able to keep up too. Oysters did seem a bit smaller this past visit, but I think we got used to them being overly generous in the past (largest we've seen at any restaurant). Still very good and part of our regular order. Selection of vegetables seemed restricted on that Friday night, did find it easier just ask the server for recommendations which worked out fine. Can understand if something are out of season or if it doesn't make sense for them to have a full selection during the slower weekday vs. weekend. We were seated at a table for four next to the bar and 2nd closest to the door - definitely could feel the draft even though they have an enclosed foyer. Many of their smaller tables were full that evening, but I'd request a different table if available. Did wish that leftovers were packed in boxes rather than styrofoam. (I'm not that fond of plastic these days either given how difficult it is to recycle sustainably). Good authentic Chinese food in the Argyle Chinatown area. The food itself is about a 4 star rating and the rest of the total dining package, including the wacky service, is what brings the total rating to 3 stars overall. Our party of 5 had the Dinner for 6 for $74. A better value would have been the Dinner for 4 for $34, and then you add your own other extra dishes. It's just a preference on what you want to eat - the Dinner for 6 was pricier by good Chinese restaurant standards but included fried frog legs, steamed talapia, shrimp, clams in black bean sauce, Chinese fried chicken, and spicy beef short ribs. Some of the little debits - * If you park in the large parking lot to the north of restaurant, you have to get back to the car after checking in to put a red tag on your dash to keep car from being towed. System worked though. * Waitress had to be flagged for attention. They forgot our frog legs, and we had to ask for them at the end. At least they came out fresh and hot from the kitchen. * They brought our check, but forgot our dessert which was part of dinner package. They took no notice, we didn't care much anyway, and we got a better dessert somewhere else. * The Dinner for 6 was a bit unbalanced - and lacked a vegetable dish. * They automatically added 17% tip on our meal. This was pretty presumptious for the service and for a Chinese restaurant to boot. Overall, and despite the little negatives, not a bad place, and nice to have in the North area - but I can see where this place can have its moments with some customers. read more

Had a family dinner for 15 people on a Tuesday. The restaurant had tables come and go the whole night. We were able to combine two tables and all sat together. The service was ok due to the lack of employees. There was only one waitress working the whole time. I wonder how many chefs were in the kitchen. The food is usually pretty consistent and good. We usually do the family set menus which provides a different variety of food. Some of the highly recommended items are the sweet and sour pork chop, spicy and salted crab, pea pod greens with blacken eggs. When you order a family set you also get soup and the typical red bean soup for dessert. I would recommend this place for authentic Cantonese food in Uptown. Buying takeout is good as well. I've done that a few times. Make sure you get a parking pass for your car otherwise your car will be gone in minutes!!! read more

Every Asian family in the Chicago land area has probably been here for a wedding or some sort of formal event. Their food is always on point and assured to deliver on good Chinese food. I think the best that it has to offer though is their taro duck dish- a hearty slab of tender duck with soft taro on top and a crispy top. I don't know of any other place in Chicago that offers taro duck in this form- everywhere else comes as a soup. They also have Japanese-styled tofu which I have also found to be a lesser common dish. They flavor it well, but the times I've had it, it lacks a fully crispy outer shell. read more

An underrated spot in Uptown! I've been here a few times with my family and it never disappoints. Spacious, great for large groups, sparkling clean, and with AMAZING service. Everyone who works here is extremely kind and genuinely caring, which goes a long way! As for food, I think you can't go wrong in anything you order. My personal favorite is the fish fillet with bok choy. Other notable dishes include the salted fish fried rice, frog legs, and Peking duck! Oh, and the house soup they bring out at the beginning of your meal (chicken and corn egg drop) is bombbb. Our family will probably continue to come back here every year when we all gather together. TIP: Don't be lazy/cheap and just get yourself to Chinatown for better Cantonese food (Go4Food and Dolo are my favorites). I only eat here when my family and relatives invite me here for meals. They love to dine here for Cantonese style food and dim sum many times through out the years purely because it is convenient. Chinatown is too far of a drive from Argyle for them and parking is difficult in Chinatown. Silver Seafood is just a 10 min walk from home and also offers free validated parking. Silver Seafood has all the typical traditional Cantonese food you can order in Chinatown, but it's badly prepared. The seafood is always very fresh, but typically way over cooked and chewy -- which is a total shameful thing to do to beautiful, fresh seafood. The stir-fried dishes generally have too much corn-starch thickened sauces, oil, sugar, msg, and sodium which ruins the delicate flavors of fresh ingredients. Occasionally, some dishes are spot on (like snow pea tips with garlic sauce and king oyster mushrooms with Japanese tofu). What I really don't like is that I always need to drink a pitcher of water after eating dinner here. Service is as expected for a Chinese restaurant (you'll need to flag the server down if you need something), water must be requested, and they're Western/English friendly. read more
