The family and I ate here recently while we were having a staycation in Waikiki. The bill was over $200 for a family of four, but for a splurge, it was well worth it. My son and I both ordered steak from the prix fixe menu. It was cooked to perfection. A salad came with it as well as dessert (creme brûlée). I also had a mixed drink, which was awesome. The service was very attentive, professional, and friendly. Water glasses were refilled frequently. When I'm paying what to me is big bucks, I expect friendly service, and I got it big time here. We are still sitting at the bar asking the hostess why we haven't been seated. Came here on a weekday for dinner. It was in a market which was fine with my wife and I. It took about 15 minutes for our server to come by the table. Another 30 minutes for our food which was fine waiting for the food but I was wondering why did it take 15 minutes for our server to come to our table? I ordered the ribeye steak medium and it came out medium rare, my wife ordered pasta which was not good at all. The noodle was hard and the plate was cold. The lobster bisque was the best during our meal here at basalt. During our dining here our server kept attending to the other table beside us. Not sure if they were friends or somewhat but you have a job to do. Leave your friendship out the door and check up on your other customers too. I noticed that other people sitting around had to also wait about 15 to 20 minutes to get some type of service. Lastly.. after finishing what we could finish from our dinner to get our check was the longest wait time just for a check! My wife and I sat there for a good 20 minutes for our check. Extremely upset at my experience at Basalt. My friend and I arrived and was told there would be a 5-10 minute wait even though the restaurant was practically empty (only 2 tables seated inside). We waited and saw the hostess seat some people that arrived after us first. Okay... so we continued waiting and finally she seats us. The food was good and our server was okay as well. After our meal, we asked for validation but we had forgotten our parking slip in our cars. We asked our server if she can just cut the validation sticker out for us instead of having us walk all the way back to our car to get it. I work near Basalt and we would do that for our guests if they had forgotten their parking slip. Our server went to go ask the hostess if she can cut it out for us. The hostess came back and told us she will not cut out the sticker for us and that we would need to have the parking slip present. Ummm why? She made us walk all the way back to our car and grab it. It was an irritating situation that was made difficult for no reason. The hostess made our experience terrible here. read more

I love Hawaii Restaurant Week. The Prix Fixe options and now with even more restaurants offer great dining options. For our first choice was Basalt. Located in Dukes Lane on Kuhio Avenue, Basalt has an interesting set up. Walking in, there is a burger bar on the left with a liquor store and little market on the other side. A bar is at the center and marks the front of the restaurant. I got there a little early and decided to have a drink at the bar as I waited for my partner. I liked the set up of the bar in the center as you have a good view of the floor and it's even a nice spot to enjoy the live music they had for this Friday night. The 'Old Fashion' I ordered was made well and showed the bartenders here are good at what they do. Once my partner arrived, we were quickly seated on their outside patio, which surprisingly had a nice ambiance. Our waiter (I forgot to get his name) was awesome. He detailed all of their offerings and made sure we were well satisfied through out the evening. We went with the Restaurant Week Prix Fixe, with Lobster Bisque, Salad, both the Braised Beef Short Rib and Seafood Duo. For Dessert, we both had the Sweetland Farms Goat Cheese Cheesecake. The meal started with some Charcoal Pan de sal bread which was light and kept the slightly sweet taste you would expect from Pan de sal but with the unique black coloration. The Lobster Bisque was great with intense lobster flavor and a nice creaminess. The salad was refreshing Soy Shallot Vinaigrette. The main courses were both done really well, with the Braised Beef extremely tender and tasty with a red miso demi glaze and the Seafood Duo of fish and Kauai Prawns delicate and flavorful. The Cheesecake was a nice finish to this wonderful meal. Overall, I'm giving Basalt 4.5 stars, this is a great place and I will have to come back soon. Our waiter also recommended trying their Prime Rib and also the Pork Shoulder off of their regular menu so I have a couple more reasons to venture back to Waikiki and Basalt. read more

Came here twice within the span of 2 weeks for brunch and dinner. My cousins and I came here for dinner this past weekend with a party of 6. Appetizers were delicious but our entree was not satisfying at all. 3 of us ordered prime rib and we did not enjoy it one bit. As you can see in my picture on the bottom, my prime rib was overcooked, dry, and extremely salty. I thought it was just mine, but my cousin and his gf also had the same problem with their prime rib. Our prime rib did not look like prime rib. We all did not finish our food and we constantly kept drinking water due to the saltiness of the prime rib. It was very upsetting and wasted $31 for it, and I don't think our server realized how overdone it was. Even when she took our order, she didn't bother to ask how we would like our prime rib done, so we all assumed it was going to be a standard medium rare. I really wanted to like this restaurant and did not expect to write a review like this after all the good reviews on Yelp, but I'll probably stick to breakfast/brunch next time I do come (if there is a next time) instead of coming here for dinner since it was absolutely disappointing . read more

There is a prix fixe menu and we got the miso black cod (what Hawaii people know as miso butterfish) and the lilikoi creme brûlée. FOOD IS BASALTY AF. I ordered the macadamia crusted fish and 1. it was salty 2. it was over cooked. How can you charge 35 bucks and overcook a fish?? The other people in my party ordered a ceviche and poke. Ceviche was an actual scam because they gave about a small gloop of ceviche and the rest was guac. Poke was SALTY. I mean i like my food kinda salty but it was REALLY salty. Do yourself a favor and go down to spitfire grill and get something instead. It's half the price and tastes much better. Being some what of a self proclaimed foodie, Basalt is one of those places you go for great food and wonderful service. Happy Hour is from 3-6pm daily, be sure to check their calendar for drink specials. We had a few of their happy hour food specials and strongly recommend the Squid Ink Pork Belly Bao. Every bite was super well balanced. John was spectacular, he made sure we were able to squeeze in a few extra Happy Hour drink specials and also recommended us to get their house aged smoked whiskey. Fantastic food-prime rib melt and vegetable linguine with shrimps. Price is fair for Waikiki and they do validate for parking which is nice. The melt was pretty perfect and the fries were on point. I had the horseradish on the side if you don't like the strong taste. The pasta is good-nothing to write home about but the shrimps were cooked to perfection and the service here really puts the dining experience up a notch. You won't go wrong eating here anytime and any meal (unless the wait is long...). This restaurant is located in central Waikiki inside Dukes Market & Eatery next to Starbucks and Nordstrom Rack. It has indoor and outdoor seating and live acoustic music in the evenings which is quite nice. I've always wandered by this venue and decided it was about time to give there happy hour (3-6pm) a try. The happy hour here is such a deal. They have a good selection of cocktails to choose from under $10. I had a Moscow mule and I really enjoyed it even though it's not a drink I usually get. My friends who I came with were very impressed with there drinks as well. The food I can say was good but not the best. For me, some dishes were lacking flavor and for others, I couldn't enjoy the flavor. Perhaps, it was there choice of ingredients and seasonings. I would come back for the cocktails and maybe try there dinner instead of happy hour food. Service was not bad and the waiters were very nice. However, our waiter made mistake when splitting our bill and charged the wrong amount since she may have did it manually. First off, we waited a while to finally get the attention of a waiter to receive our bill and to finally receive it with a mistake was unfortunate. I went up to her to address the issue and she acknowledged but asked us if we could wait. This was fine but I didn't know she meant she was going to take the order of a big party of about 6-8 people first then fix our issue. Took about 10 minutes and the overall waiting felt long enough. Basalt is worth visiting. We opted for combining appetizers with side dishes because they seemed more interesting than the entrees. We were glad we did. The grilled tako was tender and flavorful, the quinoa shrimp was crunchy and sweet, and ahi tuna was delicate and fresh. The cocktails are well balanced and spirit forward. The service was great too, with the staff checking in regularly to clear dishes or refill water. I really enjoyed this place. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun. The food was very delicious. The service was good but could have been a tad better. Try the pancakes, avocado garden toast or prime rib dip. Actually all food was pretty good and we had the fried rice, bacon corn chowder, burger , loco moco. For ate here for lunch. Good place for families with kids as there was lots of space to put down bags or even if you needed to put a stroller somewhere. The first time I came here was during restaurant week. I had the uni and crab risotto (no ikura) and the lobster bisque that was really tasty. What was really intriguing to me was the activated charcoal rolls. They were pillow soft and went so well with the butter. Their Loco moco is best I've had and I grew up in Hawaii!! Their coffee is wonderful - my server (Thuy) said it is a special blend of beans from Hawaii, Indonesia, and Columbia. And she never let my coffee get less than 1/2 empty before topping it off. read more

A secret located at Dukes Lane in Waikiki, make sure to go to the rear of their foodcourt and look for the host/hostess to be seated inside or out on their lanai. Come early to enjoy breakfast until 1:30p, lunch and happy hour daily from 3p-6p. The restaurant is new and the kitchen is working well to pump out diverse entrees quickly and the servers are attentive as well.
